How the Svea 123 works Part 1

  • This explains how the Svea 123 stove works, some people are getting a bit confused as to the correct way to use it, here in parts 1 and 2 I try to explain it in laymans terms (simple as I can) since uploading this video I made an error in relation to a leather washer in the throttle housing, it is in fact a graphite washer and NOT a leather washer.
    I tend to get a lot of time wasters asking if I can fix their stove, I leave my number for them to contact me, but nothing comes of it, even though I have offered to repair it F.O.C. and only charge the £5 to send it back to them.

    ha ha... When I watch your videos now I find myself looking for the croc that swallowed the alarm clock on Peter Pan... lol. You have a nice little collection of the stoves there my friend. Thank you for that information and setting us straight. Just like little jet engines....

    So I got a couple of questions. When I look online, all I see is Svea stoves. No 123 or 123r. Are all the new ones basically a 123r?
    And is the Optimus one you’re showing more or less the same? Same as in performance, and or operation.
    And most importantly, are any of these multi fuel like unleaded gasoline, or only white (Coleman) gas?
    Last question is are the new ones as much lesser quality as some people say? Thank you so much for any time you take to respond.

    • @charlietango1635
      @charlietango1635  ปีที่แล้ว

      first answer, yes you will have a job trying to get a 123, but the 123R are still made and it has a little pricker in it to unblock the jet should it get a bit blocked, second answer If I were you I would only use Coleman fuel or paraffin and use methylated spirit to prime it.

    Nice lot! I have an affliction for Coleman but a Svea or Optimus would never hurt my feelings should I run across one.

    Great videos Charlie. I have three of these and two of the Optimus version in the metal “painted cook case”. I also use my oldest 123 hiking overlooking Tahoe in the early spring for hot chocolate. These little guys are addictive!

    Was not the Max Sievert made versions the original first 123's before Optimus took over?

      Just use a nail the same thickness as one of the others and cut it down to size. or a long rivet nail and push it out of the rivet.

    Charlie I have Trangia which I put methylatedspirit in. Can I just put methylated spirit into tank of the svea 123? It is easier to find than coleman fuel.

    • @charlietango1635
      @charlietango1635  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      NO, DO-NOT put methylated spirit into tank, try getting some chain saw fuel called ASPEN 4, IT IS IN A BLUE CONTAINER AND COSTS £20 FOR 5 LITRES

    It does not need much primer fluid. I have tied a piece of black fire proof felt around the stem near the primer pit.
    Keeps fuel from running down the side of the stove.. as the felt absorbs the primer fuel. Just pulled my 123 apart today and cleaned out the valve tube and jet reset the wick end in the stem. It fires up a nice powerful blue flame sounds like a V1 rocket ready to forge steel. Getting the stem out of the tank was a pain, but help from some folks on another video PB Blaster penetrating fluid for two days and a strap wrench did the trick. I think I will buy a 12mm Flare nut wrench for this brass nut, as I spun my open end on it and rounded the tips a bit. The SVEA 123R has no nut at the bottom of it's stem if I remember.
    You have to put it on a bench vice upside down and spin the tank. I don't know any other way.

    • @charlietango1635
      @charlietango1635  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well then, it was far too tight if you had to do that, I have a video out there showing and explaining how to take the stem off and how tight to do it up, as it is a tapered thread, if it was that tight , then it was better that you clamped the brass nut in the vice, otherwise you would have rounded off the brass nut.

    • @charlietango1635
      @charlietango1635  ปีที่แล้ว

      It has a tapered thread so no need to over tighten it, putting the nut in the vice is the best way to loosen it, then file the nut sides to fit a spanner where you have rounded it off before putting it back on.

    Charlie, my Svea 123 leaks fuel down the control shaft which then burns with an orange flame. I have taken it all apart and there doesn't seem to be any washers or seals on the shaft, do you know what should be there and do you know where I could buy them? Many thanks. Rob

    • @ronkierstead
      @ronkierstead 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rob Piper There should be some graphite bushings that act as a washer.

    I have a 123 old style. It lights well but never gets to the blow torch blue flame. I am guessing that it is the jet.

    I have a 123 but the valve is straight out not at a downward angle. Does that mean it's a 123r?
    Thanks and best regards

    Instead of an eye dropper, use a small piece of paper towel rolled up, about 2 inches. Dip that into the white gas and let it soak up the gas. Put the cap on.Then wrap it around the base of the generator. Try to keep it open at the cap so you don't fry the cap's washer. Then you won't have gas running down the sides. In the winter you may have to do it twice, so use gas from your refill tank. Also in the winter you may have to shield the stove from the cold ground to keep pressure.
