    Simplest Setup
    In a New Project. Open the MIDI Environment CMD-0. Show the Inspector by pressing I. Select the Click & Ports layer. Select the Sequencer Input and in the Inspector select "Channelize".
    Now in Project Settings>Recordings check "Auto Demux by Channel if Multitrack Recording".
    In the Main Window create two software instrument tracks. In the Inspector under Track Settings assign a "unique midi channel" to each track corresponding to your midi controllers midi channels. "Record enable" both tracks. Each controller will play its respective software instrument track.

    Many thanks for this. I was wrestling away with two keyboards and a Mackie MCU Pro in Logic Pro X and a Metric Halo 3d interface, all of which chimed in on everything - if I left Logic with a rec button lit, the Mackie sounded a note each time I touched something. However, now, thanks to you, my Nord is one one channel, the Yamaha KX88 is driving the Korg Triton rack and the Mackie just does its stuff without making its very own random contribution to the sound. Its all separated out and I am so very very grateful!

    Thank you, i was thinking of going to Ableton live, but cymbal chokes dont work on Roland V-drums(polyphonic after touch problem/lack of).
    The trick is to keep the tracks RECORD ENABLED, and it will record the highlighted one of the record enabled tracks, yet still write data on them, bit strange, but good, as you get more midi data.
    Im using a TB03, Roland Vdrums, and Oxygen 8.
    So now the TB03, ISNT playing the V-Drums for me!! Awesome, proper smashe dmy head in for weeks.
    I do wish the MIDI was a bit easier to understand in Logic, Abletons is much more intuitive,.
    Thank you so much for posting up this. Youre a lifesaver!!!

  • @BALLOOROOM
    @BALLOOROOM 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This technique is great when you need a more sophisticated setup such as Sharing Mod, Pitch Bend and Sustain among Multiple Midi Controllers on Different Channels. Why might you want to do this? Well, say you have one keyboard with a sustain pedal, mod wheel and pitch bend and the other keyboard is a digital piano without mod and pitch bend and no sustain pedal connected. After filtering each controller with a transformer to a specific channel you can cable the midi channel filtering transformers to monitor objects which then are cabled to the sequencer input . Select the monitor object cabled to the controller with the mod and pitch bend then cable this monitor object to three transformers.
    Transformer 1 Condtions for Sustain
    Status =, Control
    Channel All
    Data Byte 1 =, 64
    Data Byte 2 Inside, 0, 127
    Transformer 2 Condtions for Modulation
    Status =, Control
    Channel All
    Data Byte 1 =, 0
    Data Byte 2 Inside, 0, 127
    Transformer 3 Condtions for Pitch Bend
    Status =, Pitchbend
    Channel All
    Data Byte 1 All
    Data Byte 2 Inside, 0, 127
    These transformers are then cabled into the monitor object for the digital piano.

    Thanks for this! I quit making music for a good bit and recently got back into it. for some reason my old environment routing weren't working like they used to and I was scratching my head trying to get it all to work with my external gear and multiple midi interfaces. Did Not have the auto demix box ticked and I had no idea that that's what it even did. Maybe I had it ticked all those years ago or I had my wacky clustered environment settings to get it to work but once I threw in a midi keyboard in the mix it threw it all out of wack and I was having to go into the environment window every time and change routings. Hopefully when I get home today this does the trick but I'm thinking this is what I was missing/forgetting.

    You're a genius, and a wonderful tutor, so clear, so elegantly simple and so well presented. Can't thank you enough.
    I do have one question though, if I didn't have 3 keyboards, but wanted to split one of my two keyboards into multiple sections and each split have it's own channel / instrument - is that possible? I guess I just have to tell the keyboard to make each split have a different midi channel / port number right and then do as this video shows, right?

    • @hirogarimusic
      @hirogarimusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Zoe Summers Hi Zoe, sorry for the late (super late) reply. You can use an environment Filter object to create a key split within the environment, so all the notes from one key range (say B2 below) go to one soft synth and everything else (C3 above) goes somewhere else.

    Hi, Bill. I'm Will from Brazil. I
    loved your video, I learned a bit more about Logic Pro, but I have not
    solved an issue that has long bothered me in Logic Pro and that in Sonar
    it was very easy to solve. I use a workstation
    and a controller together and always need to direct each channel to a
    different instrument (use 5 or 6 or more channels with splits in the
    workstation for live), so playing completely independent and power during a show
    to turn some instruments on and off. But using
    auto demix there is an automatic function that when I manage another
    track, deactivates the track (rec) that was selected and other tracks as
    well. In the Cakewalk Sonar there is a button that sets
    the track sounding, in the cubase there is, but in this I can not
    individualize the channels. You know in Logic Pro how to solve this. I want to have total control of the tracks, when to sound or not, without the automatic rec on/off function ... I tried connecting my workstation in physical input to a different transformer for channels 2, 3 and 4, but it is not possible. For your video, it's as if I needed each workstation channel (as controller) to be a physical input, but de logic in the environment does not create several physical input, only one. Do you know how to solve this in Logic Pro? Thanks

      PDR CIGARS Hi. Exactly what problem are you having?

  • @JohnThomas-ld1do
    @JohnThomas-ld1do 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi! Thanks for this! All clear. One question though. What if one (or more) of the controllers needs to input midi data to more than one midi channel/virtual instruments? To be more specific, in an example: a jam when one keyboard player plays instrument-1 in part A and instrument-2 in part B. I have been playing around with: making two or more transformers AFTER a monitor object, so actually sending to two or more midi channels ; and some volume automation (which I find more reliable than mute automation, especially when cycling) per track to overcome the disadvantage of the first step. Hope my question is clear.Oh... and the reason why I needed to ask this is because my 'solution' sometimes does the job and sometimes doesn't

    • @hirogarimusic
      @hirogarimusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Thomas Hi John. Sorry for the late reply - If I’m understanding your question correctly, you could try using a filter and transformer to create a ‘key split’ in the environment, where say everything from B2 down goes to one soft synth and everything above C3 goes to another one.

    Hi, i'm having a hard time getting this to work could you help me please ?
    So i've watched your first tutorial and it works just fine : with the routing directly in the mixer view in MIDI environnment. My e-drums trigger my drums and my keyboard triggers keyboard no problem.
    But i can't get this to work with the "click and ports" technique. I made sure my Instrument tracks are Channel 1 and 2, but creating transformers doesn't seem to have any effect. My keyboard triggers both keys and drums and my drums triggers both keys and drums as well.

I did a few restarts and did voodoo spells and all of a sudden it works. To be clear, this will work without having to change anything in the Environment as described here www.logicprohelp.com/instruments-tracks-midi-channels/. Not changing the Environment has the advantages of the session still working if your midi setup changes in the future, or if you share the session with collaborators with a different hardware setups. To achieve the same result, enable "Auto remix by channel if multitrack recording" in Project Settings > Recording and set the send/receive midi channels of your hardware. Using the transformers as you show is nice as you can ignore setting the midi channel on your hardware, but you then need to update the Environment when you update your hardware or share the session.

    • @hirogarimusic

      Yeah, so the method you link to works fine IF you have multiple devices outputting different channels BUT coming in through the SAME input (ie an MPC2000 on ch1, a JP8000 on ch2 and a Proteus on ch3, all daisy chained using MIDI and coming in through the same MIDI Port).
      My video is about when you have MULTIPLE MIDI devices on different ports, so for example 16ch of MIDI to control that Proteus through Port A on a Midiman 2x2, the JP8000 on Port B as well as a MiniNova via USB direct.
      Entirely different but similarly appearing issues.
      In the case of scenario one, the manual for Logic (recapped by LogicProHelp) has a solution. In the case of scenario two, I made this video explaining how I use the Logic Environment to get around that problem of wanting to use MULTIPLE MIDI _PORTS_ not just devices.

      Interesting. I may not understand fully but on Logic Pro X 10.3.1 I am using multiple devices on multiple ports also with no central midi interface as you explain, and the Logic Pro Help link above works for me without editing the default Environment (e.g. all ports on Physical Input route to Sum -> Input Notes -> Input View -> Sequencer Input).
      In my case, I have three devices, each connected directly to the Mac via USB, each appearing as a different Physical Input port. They are:
      Akai MPK249
      - Keyboard - Port A, channel 1
      - Drum pads - Port B, channel 10
      Yamaha S90XS
      - Keyboard, Ports 1-5, all set to channel 2
      DSI OB-6
      - Keyboard, Port 1, channel 3
      Essentially port appears to be ignored by the sequencer; it doesn't differentiate Port X, channel 1 from Port Y, channel 1, it just sees channel 1 on any connected port and routes to a track set to channel 1.
      Not sure if it factors in but I am using the External Instrument plugin in each case...

      Makes sense and agree. The Logic Pro Environment is powerful and deserves more attention. Kudos for experimenting and sharing the information.

    • @hirogarimusic
      @hirogarimusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Márcio Biaso Well easiest solution would be to just record it to one track and then copy it over. Alternatively, you could set the input of the two tracks in the main Arrange window to the same MIDI device/channel and then record them simultaneously.

    This is very helpful, my only question is maybe a dumb one...how are the 3 keyboards (or in my case, 6) physically connected to the computer? Is it all USB? Is there some kind of hub?

    • @hirogarimusic
      @hirogarimusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Allegro SCHOOL OF MUSIC Hi Allegro. Yes, each one of these keyboards is on either a separate USB connection directly to the computer or connected through a multiport MIDI to USB device (midiman 2x2 in my case).

    can i do this and still add a monitor to send one of my controllers to record multi software instruments? the problem i'm having is when i add a monitor in the click and ports section i cant seem to rout(drag) the out to the mixer section. what can i do here?

    • @hirogarimusic
      @hirogarimusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Miles R You may need to to insert a splitter in the environment if you want to send elsewhere. You can pretty much stack as many splitters as you want, since it’s just data in the environment you don’t have to worry about signal degradation.

    Thanks for the video! I have been searching for a solution for a problem that remains after this set up and that is controlling knobs and faders on these tracks independently. Logic has only allowed me to control whats focused and I really don't need that. I really want to control Filters and other parameters on a soft synths in those tracks without having to focus. Do you know if there is a workaround for that?

    • @hirogarimusic
      @hirogarimusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      hristo stoev Hi Hristo. I think what you need to do in that case is to create a series of Filter objects in the environment that take those particular controller changes and send them to where you need them.

    HELPPP this video did not work for me! :( I've spent days trying to solve this. In the "click & ports" view when I add the physical input, it automatically deletes the physical input from the Mixer view, which negates the solution from your first video and that's a problem again (all midi instrument make same sound). What do i doooo i love u bill

    I'm using Logic X and when I switch the view to Clicks & Ports, I don't have the ports section that you have on the left side of the window. Was this removed in Logic X or is my setup messed up?

    Sorry, but your tip doesn't work for me. I am using Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 with Logic Pro X and am trying to connect an AKAI MPC2000. I have 16 Tracks of midi song data sequenced on 16 tracks 1 thru 16 and Channel 1 thru 16. Problem is Each and every time I enable record (Red R) on each track then press the Record Nothing is recording on the individual tracks. No midi data. Even tried your Capture Data trick but its just a trick. No positive results.

    Great vid. Easy to follow, but I have a bone to pick with you. Why are you trying to use Logic 9 for lessons. We all know how different Logic 10 is and you’re trying to teach with a prehistoric software program. For those Logic x users who can’t pull up the environment window, it isn’t com 8. It is com 0 or Choose Window > Open MIDI Environment

    • @hirogarimusic
      @hirogarimusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. The environment isn't different between X and 9.
      2. Logic 9 isn't prehistoric, particularly when it comes to what I'm demonstrating.
      3. The original tutorial was done in 9 (in 2014), this is a follow up.
      4. Logic X Users will also need to enable 'Additional MIDI Options' in the Advanced preferences pane before Command 0 will work, or the option will appear in the Window environment.

And I apologize for my bonehead other friend Mackie. Yes I called him out and his name on TH-cam is Keynator. Lol
