I reiterate: it's not an RPG if (1) you cannot make decisions that express your character in some way, and (2) if success depends more on the player's hand-eye coordination than the character's skills. Aloy's personality is 99% fixed, the player has almost no agency here, and it doesn't matter what her abilities are, if you're clumsy with your fingers you won't find success. I really like HFW and I've sunk far too much time into it, but it's a story-driven action game.

More an action adventure game with RPG elements or RPG lite really. Also enjoyed the game but if there were a ven diagram it would only overlap with RPG, not be the big part of one of the circles.
Labeled on Steam as RPG, it's and RPG adventure game really, even tho they don't go hard on stuff you see in many other RPGs it is a Role-Playing Game so... yea idk I just like the game and it brought me back to RPGs :D

@@IvanManYT action. Adventure. Open world…every game that has any kind of leveling mechanic is called an rpg by the less informed now so i dont blame you.
Steam says it's an RPG and since it is a role-playing game, it is an RPG, maybe with lesser elements than some other games out there. Also I stated it made me go back to RPGs :D
@@IvanManYT Ultimately it's just semantics. All games are "role playing" of some kind. In the most traditional gaming terms, "role playing" means a game where the player can choose to play from many different roles. They almost always have some complicated stat and upgrade system to help differentiate these roles. In that way Horizon isn't a "role playing game." Maybe it's an action-adventure game? Sure. In don't think anyone could object to that. However, one of the most famous "action adventure" games has also been called one of the greatest "action RPGs of all time." The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past has been called an "action RPG" many times and no one ever objects to it being called that. Horizon is basically the same core concept as a Zelda game. If Zelda games are RPGs, then so is Horizon.
