I wonder what inspires someone to go into the fire service. When my family moved into a smaller community, my dad enrolled in the volunteer fire dept. where he served for 30 years, later retiring as a captain. If the work is so risky, what makes people do it? The desire to serve must be very strong.

I'm a civilian whose father volunteered 30 years a fire captain (1981, then retired in 2011). Each time I see you in action (trucks on the move), I think, "My dad did some of that."
