+badnewsbarnett WE WHO LOVE MUSIC appreciate your presentation of this classic ROCK N ROLL gem from the original genius who provided the soulful melody. The version most of us came to know and love from AOR (album oriented radio) of the 70's by The Steve Miller Band is still moving, discovering the character of Paul Pena the original composer brings that love of music to a much deeper, broader and higher level of humanity. In fact it was a desire to reminisce about my own 70's Rock exploration and reconfigure the lyrical interpretation of past hearing with present knowledge that led me to YT for the SMB version, when I discovered your vid, several years ago. IT IS ONLY NATURAL THAT ANY CHILD EXPOSED TO SUCH SOULFUL AND MELODIC SINGING WILL ASSUREDLY RESPOND IN THEIR OWN INNOCENT "BOOGIE" moreso by seeing the tacit approval of their significant other, mother, father, brother, sister enjoying the music as well.
Cryptic or curios as this may sound, I just discerned a connection between the LOVE OF SUCH MUSIC that compels our heart and soul to higher, ethereal aspirations that refuses hate and the collective development of the personal computer industry from the brain trust of like minded spirits percolating out of the HOMEBREW COMPUTER CLUB in the Bay Area. of the early 70's a time that witnessed the rising peaks of collaborative ingenuity of programming code and hardware technology that was frequently developed and perfected within a mental matrix background of music. The FREE THINKING embodied in such music reflects a creative element that acted as a cognitive catalyst among the socially rarefied atmosphere of computer code pioneers of that early era.Today, 40 plus years going forward, It is a challenge to even imagine the inventive audacity of those who accurately aimed to change the world with "PERSONAL COMPUTER" technology for the good of all mankind and did ! Furthermore, IMHO, the fertile and free exchange of problem solving ideas in creating code and hardware devices was perhaps influenced by one of the most enduring and prominent bands associated with the Bay Area, THE GRATEFUL DEAD who encouraged the free recording and exchange of their live concert "tapes." as part of a vibrant cultural ethos, where money and materialism were mere fringe elements to the goal of making live music for lovers to dance.....
OH YEAH ! The above seemingly non sequitur thought evidently arose from the knowledge that PAUL PENA composed this classic rock song with the lyrics, " Somebody is trying to make me hate, you know I got to keep moving on ...... BIG OL JET AIRLINER " which I embraced as an inner city teen listening and loving the lyrical content of most Rock and Roll and still "living and loving" through the decades to discover that many of my favorite songs were first composed by music immortals of my own background, who chose to LOVE AMERICA, despite the hardships and hypocrisy endured throughout the American South.. This discovery lead to an existential epiphany signified by the lyrics of that little band from TEXAS, ZZ TOP, "Took a drive through Mississippi , MUDDY WATER turned to wine !" SUCH MANIFEST GRACE IS THE MARK OF CREATIVE GENIUS. Such imbibing of salubrious. and plentiful abundant inventive and intellectual "HOMEBREW" lead to such technological inventions as this mobile phone that allows me to hear an alert of a TH-cam response of a post I had made months ago and be able to give an immediate response because such music is so significant, SO SIGNIFICANT to my sense of self. My dad used to play this version all the time. My pop was a big blues and soul guy. Everyone was always praising Steve Miller and no one ever believed it as a cover until I played the his.
I just learned about Paul Pena andthis song, (April 2023) from Kid Rock while he was on "Club Random" with Bill Maher (Oct 30 2022) I LOVE this original version!!🤘👏💯✈
I knew that Paul Pena had written “Jet Airliner” which was one of the Steve Miller Band’s biggest hits; I never get tired of hearing it. But this is my first time hearing the original version by the man himself. Wonderful combination of down home blues and funky old soul with some serious guitar picking and great singing. Mr. Pena, your fans are missing you and so is Steve Miller.
Always did let blast the Steve Miller cover of this song in my car. All the years I thought it was written by Steve Miller. - - - Paul Pena's original is absolutely beyond! - - - Thx for sharing this jewel!
There was some conflict between Paul Pena mgr & Bob Dylan Mgr about releasing the song. I think it over some word or words so Dylan blocked him from being able to release it. So Pena gave it to the Steve Miller who made some changes & they released it. Paul Pena was given royalties to help him along in life. It seemed that he was sick or something. So it's not an exact copy. But at least he was able to get money to live off of.
@@Hurricaneintheroom Bob Dyland had nothing to do with that. It was Albert Grossman, Dylan's mgr, who was such an SOB to a great artist and humble man like Paul Pena. Steve Miller "rescued" the song.
Paul used to come record over at our studio, and during the time he was getting on the ham radio and learning how to throat sing. My studio partner, Lemon, was his friend, and was along to record the audio on the trip to Tuva. That movie, Genghis Blues, is one of the best feel good movies I've ever seen.

I'm with you, I like Steve Miller Band and their version, just was wondering if anyone knew this existed by another before the '70's.
Paul was one of the sweetest people I ever met. When I was a little kid my mom used to bring him meals, this is when he was sick and just a couple years away from death. The first time I met him, I was kind of terrified because I had never seen a really really sick person before, and he was so thin, so different from how he looked in the movie. Paul coaxed me to come closer and say hello in his wonderful gravelly voice-- "You're not in hell, kid," were his exact words. But he said it so kindly, so warmly, it just put me at ease right away. He was such a beautiful soul, and an incredible talent.
I met him a few times both performing with him and in the audience. I played at the benefit concert around 2000 with most of the Genghis Blues people in attendance. I'll email you.

No you shouldn't because this album went unreleased from 1973 to 2000 due to an evil label manager and he was prevented from recording for the same reason. They literally robbed him of recognition and compensation and the world was robbed of his talent
I've fell in love with Paul's "New Train" album years ago when it was finally released. My uncle just told me how he had seen Paul perform at Elm Park numerous times back in the day. Nice to see a genius has a connection to Worcester.
paul was a cool interesting dude, we hung out and jammed in sf. He came to my door one day- a blind man at the gate. we welcomed him in and he blew us away with his grateful dead leads. he was amazing on guitar. best player to ever cross my path.
WOW! I've adored the Miller version for years, but now that I've finally heard the original version, I have to say, it's so much better! Much more soulful, more experimental, more laid back. You can definitely tell, just from the whole flavor of the track, that this guy is the one who wrote the song!
paul pena loves music for the sake of music alone and it shows in his music, watch the documentary genghis blues and see the effort he put into teaching himself tuvan throat singing and he was very sick at the time and nearly blind
I had the good fortune to see him perform in Boston in 1970 at the Jazz Workshop. Blind but you'd never know it. What a talent!. What a song, vocals and crazy lead guitar.... Definitely an evening that has stuck with me all these years later. Thank the Lord for posting this. It KILLS Steve Miller's version.
I will jump on it. I work on a little local radioststion in denmark. I will surely play this. I have never heared it before. I beleived it was by Steve Miller Band😀
It might have been a hit if Pena's album "New Train" featuring "Jet Airliner" had been released in 1974 soon after its December '73 recording. Unfortunately it was shelved by the record label's owner and wasn't released until 2000.
Goddamn i'm blown away by this. All these years i've been a huge fan of the Steve Miller Band version, not having a clue it was a cover. Still love that version, but this one I think I like better.
This song helped keep me sane in my first job out of college. It was long hours and a lot of travel, and no other song quite captures the exhaustion and loneliness of being so often on the move.
Paul experienced the flight. I think his version shows the anxiety he felt during his trip. Miller did a fantastic cover to make this tune popular. Great job, both!
Steve Miller and Paul Pena were friends. Miller tried hard to help Pena, after his record company screwed him over. Paul Pena (may he rest in peace) was happy to get the royalties. Toward the end of his short life, I believe he was nearly destitute.
Astounding musician--singer, throat singer, guitar player (slide wizard) and then he goes to Tuva and wins the national throat singing competition and charms the nation. See the documentary film Genghis Blues.
PAUL PENA...years ago, the first time I saw him in the "Ghengis Blues" film... I really was set on fire, when I heard his unbelievable great voice!!! For me PAUL PENA was one of the greates voices of the last century...if HE would have had a little bit more luck with the presentations of his LP's, I am SURE, he would have made the way UP to the TOP! and: he would have given us A LOT MORE of his fantastic musical works! 'was very happy, when I found out, that Capitol Rec. offers his very hard to find first records as MP3-downloads, a really true DIAMOND!(Vinyl-LP "Paul Pena,1972) I was very sad, when a Frisco guy told me, that there is no grave, Paul can't be visited....surely he is at home with his family. R.I.P. Paul.....for me you were ONE OF THE GREATEST ! ! ! Your place is right beside ELVIS, FREDDIE M., Joe Cocker and a lot of more immortal voices of the last century! Also sad to hear, that Kongar-Ol Ondar left us 2 years ago!! I think, now they kargyraa together in heaven !.....
Wow. Heard and fell in love with Steve Miller Band's version over 40 years ago. Listened to this original version for the first time today. Great stuff. Fun trivia: Gary Mallaber played drums on both versions.
This is EXCELLENT!!!! Thanks for this history lesson. One of the best things I'll hear or see today. Going to pick up my first guitar and will definitely learn this one. May he rest in peace.
I just found out this was not written by Steve Miller. Miller's version of this song is one of my favorite songs, but I have to say I was totally blown by this version! love it!
I'll be dam'd! I thought Steve Miller wrote this. This is absolutely killer! I used to think of this song when the Navy was flying me all over the world 🌎 😄 ✈️
Amazing - so good. My son was just singing the Steve Miller version to himself and asked me if Steve wrote the song. I said, "Hmmm, I don't know" and looked it up - and discovered this genius Paul Pena. Genius. It does not matter who is best, it is just so good to hear the original - so fresh today as the day it was made. Bless his soul for this eternal creation.
Everyone loves the Steve Miller version, but Paul's original is epic. Steve Millers is solid rock and roll, but Paul puts you through a 5 minute emotional experience.
I’m only here bc I heard Kid Rock mention this during a podcast recently. I dig the SMB ver but I really like the grittiness of this one. I need to see the Behind the Music on this one.
@R You Don’t Know It I watch that movie about once a year or so. every time i spend the next several weeks taking in as much Paul Pena as possible. you can really feel Him in his music
Love it! My pleasure in sharing this music. The first time I heard this song was the very very brief snippet on Genghis Blues and I haven't had it out of my head since.
Man, BadNews Thank you, thank you thank you for getting this up on the internet, Been a musician all my life and didn't know about Paul. I found your post of this at about 4,000 views I think I've listened to this tune 700 or more times. The whole album is unreal and a bunch of really good musicians obviously knew there was something there with this guy, cuz they're playing on this album. Thanks for getting the word out.
I heard about Paul Pena when my high school had a special screening of Genghis Blues way back in 1999. Since then I've become a fan of Paul Pena, throat singing, and have a better appreciation for Steve Miller Band. All around a positive experience.
I was today years old when I found out THIS even existed and was the original. Thank you, internet! Been listening (to what I thought was the original) from Steve Miller for decades.
I always loved Steve Miller's version but just found this when recommended by somebody when I was watching the Steve Miller version. Somebody below commented that this is a jewel - man, you're not wrong! Absolutely superb - how people can dislike this is beyond my comprehension..
I had always believed the Steve Miller Band's version of this song was the original until now. I love their version but...this one by the original composer, Paul Pena, is SWEEEEEET!
Tracey K Thank you, I grew up knowing Steve Miller Band, it is my favorite. I add songs from the 50's & 60's on another place and was surprised to find this. Yes, I like Steve Miller's Version better.
Just to get this straight, Steve Miller is a living legend, and has payed his dues as much as anyone else playing with the greats like Muddy and Buddy Guy. His cover is not a commercial "middle class repackaging", but rather a tribute from one great musician to another.

I've fell in love with Paul's "New Train" album years ago when it was finally released. My uncle just told me how he had seen Paul perform at Elm Park numerous times back in the day. Nice to see a genius has a connection to Worcester.
I never tire of hearing this recording of this song. It is amazing. Paul was a huge talent. ✌️🤘🙏
paul was a cool interesting dude, we hung out and jammed in sf. He came to my door one day- a blind man at the gate. we welcomed him in and he blew us away with his grateful dead leads. he was amazing on guitar. best player to ever cross my path.
Been listening to this for two days over and over...
WOW! I've adored the Miller version for years, but now that I've finally heard the original version, I have to say, it's so much better! Much more soulful, more experimental, more laid back. You can definitely tell, just from the whole flavor of the track, that this guy is the one who wrote the song!
+Luke Schwiebert Totally agreed!
SERIOUSLY! Luv it!
AGREED!! This is so much better than Miller's.
I love this version so much more too! It's not on spotify though so I can't put it on my playlist
paul pena loves music for the sake of music alone and it shows in his music, watch the documentary genghis blues and see the effort he put into teaching himself tuvan throat singing and he was very sick at the time and nearly blind
This version is ROCKING. Just awesome. Thank you for posting the original.
"All along the watchtower" "Diamonds and rust" & "Jet Airliner".......still alive thnx for the covers than originals!!
This version smokes! I can’t believe radio stations never jumped on it.
I will jump on it. I work on a little local radioststion in denmark. I will surely play this. I have never heared it before. I beleived it was by Steve Miller Band😀
@@kasperbandittenlarsen-roth3251 doit '' thats great ''
It might have been a hit if Pena's album "New Train" featuring "Jet Airliner" had been released in 1974 soon after its December '73 recording. Unfortunately it was shelved by the record label's owner and wasn't released until 2000.
I’m just hearing this for the first time in my life, and it’s absolutely beautiful!
Goddamn i'm blown away by this. All these years i've been a huge fan of the Steve Miller Band version, not having a clue it was a cover. Still love that version, but this one I think I like better.
I couldn't agree more.
Me 3
I was going to write exactly the same thing!
steve miller did alot of covers, about half of the songs on greatest hits are written by other people
This version has more "feel" than Miller's. That's how it seems to me.
Wow!!!!! never knew I been schooled thanks for the history lesson.
Holy shyt! Just found out Steve Miller covered this. wow!
Steve Miller and Paul Pena were friends. Miller tried hard to help Pena, after his record company screwed him over. Paul Pena (may he rest in peace) was happy to get the royalties. Toward the end of his short life, I believe he was nearly destitute.
Lord, what a masterpiece of an original song. Viva the memory and music of Paul Pena!
Am I the only one who found this because Kid Rock mentioned it to Bill Maher on their podcast together?? Good stuff!!
Wow probably the only intelligent thing Kid Rock has ever said in his life.
Such an underated artist and much love!!!!! paul still listening to you 2019🤟🏻
Astounding musician--singer, throat singer, guitar player (slide wizard) and then he goes to Tuva and wins the national throat singing competition and charms the nation.
I've must have listened to this 50 times the last year. Thanks for the upload.
This is EXCELLENT!!!! Thanks for this history lesson. One of the best things I'll hear or see today. Going to pick up my first guitar and will definitely learn this one. May he rest in peace.
Love this version so much more than the one I heard on the radio! Wish I'd known this one years ago!
Paul was also an excellent Tuvan throat singer. Check out 'Ghengis Blues' the movie. RIP Paul.
hecollected a nice payday
What?
It’s a great documentary. That’s how I found this song.
This is one of my favorite albums.
I just found out this was not written by Steve Miller. Miller's version of this song is one of my favorite songs, but I have to say I was totally blown by this version! love it!
I'll be dam'd! I thought Steve Miller wrote this. This is absolutely killer! I used to think of this song when the Navy was flying me all over the world 🌎 😄 ✈️
I listen to this song every time I take a flight…now I listen to the original!
Everyone who watches this must check out Genghis Blues documentary about the great Paul Pena!!!
December151791 i love that doc
Cape Verdean
Feynman Lives!!!
@R You Don’t Know It I watch that movie about once a year or so. every time i spend the next several weeks taking in as much Paul Pena as possible. you can really feel Him in his music
a magical human whom I had the humbling good fortune to meet more than a few times; a special light came from this man. His music beams all of that.
Love it! My pleasure in sharing this music. The first time I heard this song was the very very brief snippet on Genghis Blues and I haven't had it out of my head since.
Tears, laughter, even joy in discovering a song I'd loved all my life had been done BETTER by a cool guy like this... off to find the music, THANX!
This is honestly one of the best videos of a song I've seen on TH-cam, and I've seen a lot!!!!! Paul is so cool, and sounds so sweet. Sure miss him!
UNREAL the groove the soul , what a performance
Man, BadNews Thank you, thank you thank you for getting this up on the internet, Been a musician all my life and didn't know about Paul. I found your post of this at about 4,000 views I think I've listened to this tune 700 or more times. The whole album is unreal and a bunch of really good musicians obviously knew there was something there with this guy, cuz they're playing on this album. Thanks for getting the word out.
Bro this song literally has been played once a day for the past 7 years. Mr. Bad News this song got me through a lot!
New train has been in my record collection for 9 years now: great, highly recommended.
Watch the documentary "Genghis Blues." This was one amazing man!
I heard about Paul Pena when my high school had a special screening of Genghis Blues way back in 1999. Since then I've become a fan of Paul Pena, throat singing, and have a better appreciation for Steve Miller Band. All around a positive experience.
Shows you how good the song is if Steve Miller covers it. Steve Miller is a damn good songwriter.
Did he fairly pay tho????
@@PlanetC64 Pena was able to make a living off the royalties for much of his life, so I think so.
@@PlanetC64The royalties allowed Paul to have a base income his entire life.
@@badnewsbarnett thanks, i’m glad
@@eser8167 how’d i miss this? Thanks, i’m glad
I was today years old when I found out THIS even existed and was the original. Thank you, internet! Been listening (to what I thought was the original) from Steve Miller for decades.
WOW! This song is wonderful. Soulful and bluesy. Steve Miller gave it some great electric OOMF! And sped it up quite a bit.
Thank you KR
Just to get this straight, Steve Miller is a living legend, and has payed his dues as much as anyone else playing with the greats like Muddy and Buddy Guy. His cover is not a commercial "middle class repackaging", but rather a tribute from one great musician to another.
Absolutely right! Both great. And Miller's cover provided at least some income for Pena.
A découvrir cet incroyable parcours ! Obrigada Paul Pena pá bo música e morabeza artística. We don't forget you, crioulo brother from USA and Cape Verde.
I never knew Steve Miller's was a cover...this is a really cool, blues-rock version of this song.
Very grateful to have learned this. This guy has so much soul. What a guitarist and singer. Steve Miller too, of course.
I was today years old when I found out that Steve Miller is not the original singer of this awesome tune.
Can't believe this Cat didn't get his props after all this time . What a shame .This version is straight up AWESOME .RIP .
Both versions are in my Miller playlist. Thanks for the upload!
This song is just dripping with GREASE. You must also tip your cap to Steve Miller for making a great hit record out of it.
No wonder Steve kept this under his hat ,it blows his version off the charts. Just my opinion .
Wow - who knew! Thank you Mr. Pena for this song!
THE BEST VERSION
Igual que alguien más. Explosión de Blues, Soul y Rock, La Original con Paul Pena. Stevie Miller puro Rock y Ritmo, Sensacionales!!
Has the feel of the Beatles Get back mixed with Crossroads.
+Barbara Green-Burke - Perfect assessment.
yep i hear it....
Barbara Green-Burke it’s just a standard blues song those songs are ok
Absolutely smokin
Wow never knew Steve Millers version was a cover this is fantastic
Lived next to him in SF for several years, and had the opportunity to speak with him on a few occasions. Very cool guy. Didn't learn of his connection to this song until after he passed.
How appropriate that Paul Pena is jumping aboard a 747, and Steve Miller a 707. Maybe it was Steve's way of acknowledging whose version is better.
I still love the SMB version, but Pena's recording gives new meaning to the word "bluesy". My feet are dancing to this, even as I'm sitting down. Amazing.
Good god this is SO MUCH BETTER than the remake
100%
Really makes you wonder about the music biz back then
Incredible song and performance. Can’t believe this wasn’t released at the time.
👏🏾 BRAVO!
