Paul Pena - Jet Airliner (The Original)
itunes.apple.com/us/album/new-train/id19094292
www.amazon.com/New-Train-Paul-Pena/dp/B00004Y6R1
This is the original version of Jet Airliner. The song was made famous by Steve Miller Band after he received an unreleased copy of Paul's album New Train.
Due to problems with famous manager Albert Grossman, Paul Pena's phenomenal album New Train didn't get released for almost 30 years. It's a truly amazing work of art.
While Steve Millers version is fantastic and a great cover, Paul's original version is out of this world. It's a very deep and heartfelt song. Paul, who was completely blind by the age of 20, sings of his experience on an airplane trip from Boston to Montreal to play the first-ever date with T-Bone Walker's band.
Most of Paul's income came from the royalties for writing this great song. He later was the focal point of the award winning documentary "Genghis Blues."
Sadly, Paul passed away in 2005 after a long bout with Pancreatitis.
I highly suggest everyone pick up a copy of New Train if you can.

what a classic
Woah. Just woah. Must have been maddening sitting on this as SMB's version blew up.
Very funky vibes.
I prefer Steve millers version but probably because I know it better, appreciate this guy who wrote it though, nice guitar on this
99.999999999999% of the time I like the version that I grew up on and heard first. But this version I like better than Millers...and i still love Millers version.
MY 45 RPM RECORD SENT ME HERE ! JUST LOOK UNDER THE TITLE OF THE SONG THE NAME SHOULD BE THERE. EXAMPLE BAND ON THE RUN (MCCARTNEY) IF YOU HAVE THE ORIGINAL 45
🌹🌹🌹🦁🔥❤️🌹🌹
Lenny kravitz next cover
In trifecta this version actually irritates me upon completion of listening Steve Miller saved this song!!!
In addendum I find penas version boring!
Pena is down on the groove but Steve Miller is far more dancable inaccessible and something you want to yell about!
The release was delayed years due to a label dispute issue
I play bass and sing Steve's version of the song in a band and this is the first time I've heard the original version. cool!
Not better or worse than Steve's version, just has a different energy. More soulful, more bluesy, more guitar licks. I think Steve Miller's version has more drive & is a bit tighter. Better produced, heavier guitars. But I'm glad we have both versions. I'm gonna dive into more of this guy's music. Sounds like he was a super decent human being & underrated musician.
I didn't think I was going to like this version, but I really, really do! 😎
Both versions to me are great...but what shame i didnt find this the orginal until now damn but either way now i can hear both nice!!!
This version was part of an album that didn't release until 2000
Damn! I'm just now finding this in 2024? This is so much better than the Steve Miller cover.
With all respect to Steve M. His cover was fun to listen to, but it never made sense musically. Props to Paul P. Thank you.
Holy hell - just learned of this today - what a great song
Been thinking about jumping out the door.,.
#GenghisBlues
Such a beautiful masterful tune
1000th
Thank you sir. Richie Heaven. Coming to my mind.
Second best Paul Peña song after Gonna Move for me.
Man, I love the Blues.
Jet Airliner is no longer my favorite Steve Miller song.
Wow. Just WOW.
This is really great ❤❤❤❤❤
Iconic number # 😊
Steve's it great but this is the original 😊
Bet that worth a book😊😊😊😊😊
Sounds like Lenny Kravitz is indebted to Paul Pena for his voice and guitar playing. Amazing original! And what an amazing undervalued artist.
Way better version than Mr. Miller!! I agree guys!! I saw Steve live he was good but not as good as this one!!
Almost 16 years since I’ve posted this. A lot of life lived in between. This song hits differently as you age. When I posted this at 26, this song was about literally not going too far away from my core self. It fed into my grit and determination. At 42, it means something so different. Staring into the window of regret, unknown outcomes you left behind, confronting the realities of how long you get to be on this ride before you get carried too far away. I hope I live long enough to celebrate its 50th anniversary of this great song posted here. The entire album is available here: th-cam.com/video/enm7VkAJQ5k/w-d-xo.htmlsi=FfcchbsP_9Le7Njo Sweet Venutian Lady is my favorite of them all
The Professor of Rock profile video on the song, Paul Pena & Steve Miller is a good watch, check it out.
1000 percent better...posted...grew up with Miller one...this is so much more my asthetic I guess...loving the similar comments. Just heard it on coast to coast and ha to look it up and play on repeat.
Sad how hard this is to find these days. They bury history
👍💗
2024 still on
"recorded with guitarist Jeff Baxter..."
what a great song!
Fuck yeah
Look, all the shade on Steve Miller is so far off base. If anything, Steve paid serious homage to this amazing cat by making one of the coolest songs of the 70’s. Ben Sidran produced this Paul Pena album around ‘73 and brought it to SMB and they gave it to the world. This version is obviously much groovier and slaps hard. Paul Pena deserves the credit for sure but if SMB hadn’t made it famous you’d never have heard of Paul Pena. This album is one of the hardest vinyls to find and if you do, consider yourself lucky because the entire album bleeds beauty and soul. And before ever hearing the PP version, SMB gave millions of people one of the best rock songs ever. But yeah, this recording is king.
Soul, heart and feelings is what makes a song, not a remake!!!
His voice just pulls me in... I'm loving this
99% of the time the original version is best. Naturally, it springs forth from the heart and mind of the creating artist. Everything after that is a derivative interpretation of another's art. TH-cam is a great place to test this. Put your favorite song title in the search bar with "original, 45, 78." Go back to the source to find beauty. Thanks for your genius Paul Pena.
Here in Europe we always thought it was a Steve M original, but hey, what a great version this is. Always cool to hear the original version, I play this song with my band, but maybe we'll go for the original version now, what a soul in the music
Oh man, imagine Paul and Steve miller doing a colab! That would have been amazing!
I've always loved the Steve Miller version, but this one slaps! The New England lyric makes all the more sense!
