  • Starshot: Space Circus Fever is a platform game for the Nintendo 64 and for Windows. It was released by Infogrames in 1998 in Europe and 1999 in North America. It is one of the few games on the Nintendo 64 to feature 16:9 widescreen.

    Found this game in a Walmart bargain bin for $20 in 2000 when I was a kid. The camera and janky controls made me feel like I wasted my money. I forced myself to play some more to get my moneys worth, which i'm super glad I did. Every world is so unique, dialog was hilarious, and had such a fun cast of characters. The ending left with such a cliffhanger that I replayed the game two more times to see if I got a bad ending or missed any telling signs of the outcome (this was before internet was essential in homes and it never occurred me to use a search engine. Sorry for the paragraph, had a sudden rush of nostalgia since I haven't thought of this game in years.

      Couldn't agree more, the humor and characters are excellent, and the PC version has full voice acting which was great for that time. You can run it today in high resolution and it feels like watching a funny cartoon. The only issues is the bad camera.

    I remember highly anticipating this game after seeing preview screenshots in magazines. I expected an awesome adventure game like Mario 64 or Banjo and Kazooie with a sci-fi twist like Jet Force Gemini. I bought it a few months after it came out in the U.S. and it was the most disappointing game me and my brother had for the N64. I felt sorry that my brother got it for his birthday.

    I for one love this soundtrack. It jumps from joyful to eerie in such an addicting manner. I have almost the entire soundtrack locked in my head. The game itself isn't pretty good but I remember having fun with it. Maybe it was because I felt like it was a challenge for me to pass it rather than actual joy of doing such. But the game did stick with me. As a whole the game is just eerie. It starts off in a beach and then goes to a barren post-apocalyptic earth and then to a freaky circus. I feel bad for knowing I'm one of the few players of feels that way about Starshot... I sort of miss him..

    Is it just me, but despite the wonky camera angles being such an issue, a part of me finds it to be somewhat of a welcome challenge. Not so much for the camera angle issue but more so because of the charming characters and vivid worlds.

    I really wish they would bring back this game... it seems like it has good potential. Even though the game itself wasn't made very well, I still love it. Here's a thought: with its multitude of unique characters, do you think it could be a fun TV show? Gee, that'd really be something!

    I remember seeing this in a magazine back in the day when it was originally called Space Circus. I also read that the PC version of this game was supposed to be playable without having to install it, as it would stream the data directly from the disc. Don't know if that ever panned out.

    • @antoniorsoftware

      Yes, the PC version doesn't require any installation, you put the CD and play. I never played another fully 3D game on PC that did this.

    Back in the day I actually played through this entire game and beat it. At first glance it's just kind of cute. Eventually though you learn that the game is actually very dark and even a little cruel. The attractions you're collecting essentially become slaves to your circus. Almost every character is miserable and depressed. I wonder how much the pains the development rubbed off on the writing of the game or if this is just some usual french ennui. Another thing that made the game unique for its time is that it's an E-rated Nintendo game that ended up uncensored with characters using mild profanities (like hell and damn.)
    The darkly comic nature of the story is what kept me playing, even as I became just as lugubrious as the characters on screen slogging through such a frustrating experience.

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Anne-Marie Rose some very interesting points and thoughts right here. I do often think that some of the French style doesn't always translate globally especially for games of this era

    • @antoniorsoftware
      @antoniorsoftware 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The N64 version actually is censored. Right at the beginning of the first level; on N64 the green haired lady wears a shirt, while on PC she is basically nude with only sea shells covering her nipples.

    • @anactualmotherbear
      @anactualmotherbear 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      that kind of censoring makes sense for an E-rated game though.

    What did you say the name of the engine was? ID3? Is that the same as Quake 3?
    But this is another that passed by me, I remember seeing it in N64 Magazine, but never touched it. No idea why, either from the abundance of 3D platformers already on the system, or that I'd gone back to the PS1 or maybe even the Dreamcast by then.

I can remember on the day of launch me collecting it and going over to a friends house. I borrowed his N64 to try it out and within 5 minutes we both could tell it was an absolute stinker. I returned it on the way back home.

    Although I have fond memory's of this game especially the war planet with the red vs blue generals fighting eachother, I did find the cameras angles extremely frustrating at times especially on planets where you could easily fall and die.
    Quick question I hear you saying you can shoot enemy's with your gun? But wasn't Starshot a star juggler and so gave him the ability to manipulate the stars with his hands?

    I used to play this game on N64 when I was 11 but I actually didn't own it. My dad just rented it for me from Chartbusters in my home city of Dublin, Ireland about few times in 2001. Sadly Chartbusters went out of business in 2010. The game was alright but the controls and cameras are kinda crappy and frustrating. It might be an underrated N64 game.

    I remember this being one of the first games I ever borrowed from a friend, and was thoroughly entertained by the ideas, locations, characters and dialogue, which are all great- but the game itself is honestly pretty terrible overall.
    Still, it had a lot of memories attached to it for me, and so I picked it up for cheap on eBay a few years ago. I'm still happy to have it in my collection, and I'm determined to get back to it and actually finish it- if only to enjoy more of the setting and find out what happens.

    I absolutely enjoyed this game, I mean the camera is shit, yes. But the humour of this game is so hilarious, I enjoyed playing this, also I don't think the controls are that bad, if you get into it.

    • @antoniorsoftware
      @antoniorsoftware 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, the humor is one of the best parts of the game. Also, there are a ton of movie references in the game; you can find stuff from Aliens, Star Wars, Total Recall, etc... The main issue is the camera, it really ruined the game.

  • @Christopher-md7tf
    @Christopher-md7tf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is a sad case because I really love the settings, characters, dialogue and humor of this game, but the actual gameplay is just SO TERRIBLE and frustrating because of the AWFUL controls and camera (even by N64 standards). It's basically unplayable.

    I don't remember much about this game. Back then I had some linker device called the Z64 so I played pretty much every N64 games. Good Times.
    That said, most times the controls and/or framerate were terrible, and in the case of Starshot, I only played it once or twice before going back to a better plateformer like Mario 64 or Banjo Kazooie.
    In retrospect I regret not insisting more on little games like this one instead of replaying the sames games over and over (God knows how many times I've completed Goldeneye, Mario 64, Ocarina of Time and Banjo Kazooie) . But one of the cool thing about less interesting games like this one is that they make you realise how the great the real gems are.
    The only thing I remember about this particular game was that the controls were terrible 🤔

    One of the worst cameras of the N64... Now that's saying something!
    I actually played this quite a lot as a kid, though I could never complete it. I think I was just entranced by the atmosphere, art style and characters. The gameplay itself was quite frustrating most of the time because of the camera and control issues. Also I remember being unsure what to do a lot, as some of the solutions to certain situations were pretty cryptic, if my memory serves me right. And there were a lot of enemies that were seemingly invincible, which is pretty strange for a platformer in and of itself. Nevertheless, this video has got me wanting to go back and look at it through the eyes of an adult. And I just found out that there's a PC version with an FMV intro and voice acting, that obviously looks a lot better than the N64 version. Maybe I'll give that a go if I can get it to run.
