Shadowgate 64 trials of the four towers review on the nintendo 64. Recorded using an Ultra HDMI modded N64 console with an Elgato game capture HD capture card using a real game cartridge.
Does this retro nostalgic game fall into your top 5 or top 10 N64 games? What do you think if the music or soundtrack in the game?
One of my favorite games on the N64. I loved the sense of solitude, the medieval scenaries, the music, the misteries... As a child, I was affraid of play this game alone. And I cried listening the ending song...
I often rewatching your old videos :D And still enjoy them :D
When I was younger, I picked up this game at a game store. It was the last N64 game I ever got before we bought an Xbox, but I remember seeing only the box art. That was all we had to go on back then, and this box art sold me. I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting, but the first Lord of the Rings film had just released, and I guess young me really liked the fact that the cover kind of looked like the eye of Sauron. We didn't have a memory pak, so my brother and I basically had to trudge through any game that required it fully knowing that we'd lose any progress we made as soon as we shut off the system. With Shadowgate 64, this added a whole new level of fear to playing it. Not only was the game dripping with atmosphere, but the frequency of death you can experience in this game, mixed with the lack of any ability to save, meant that we were constantly on edge. The farthest I ever got when I was younger was to the town just after Lakmir's tower, and whenever I reached that point, I just about gave up. I had no idea what to do past then, as the game really never tells you where to go, or what to do. You just kind of have to guess. It's one of my all time favourite games, but I think that's only because of the circumstances surrounding my experience with it. Then again, that's pretty much what makes any game a favourite.
me paso exactamente tu misma historia amigo, hasta que milagrosamente puse la flor en la tumba de aristolin.
Hilarious that was a lot like me on Playstation RPGs, no memory card so I only play beginning for a while and then have to start from beginning again.
It's funny how the reviews back then tried to keep us away from this game, whereas this revisitation of the game actually makes it look pretty good. Colour me intrigued.
+Diepzeevis I guess back in the day kemko weren't giving cash packages to reviewers
N64 Glenn Plant did they send you one lol dude its been forever since i seen one of your videos i got a ton to catch up on stupid youtube not telling me
Hands down one of my favorite n64 games of the time. And you’re absolutely right about the music. I catch myself humming it from time to time even now.
Anyone who hated on this game and gave it a bad review is clearly someone who never played and loved Shadowgate on the NES. This game fully captures the same essence of the original, and is the terrific sequel fans of the orginal had waited 10 years for. Hate on "Beyond Shadowgate" for Turbografix CD all you want because that game truly is trash; but this is great.
amen to that! This game takes the atmosphere to a whole new level
@@n64glennplant I like the remake of the orginal, but I am a console gamer and it didn't get a console release until 2019, 5 years after its PC release. Unfortunately, the console versions are very buggy, and have numerous game breaking bugs which have never been patched. Therefore, I've never been able to finish it :(
Just came across this channel a week ago. I think I've watched every review as I read my old "N64 magazine" collection. This is some amazing dedication, well done bro.
+TaytoBoss N64 magazine 😍 that reminds me I really do need to get the next N64 magazine episode put together
Shadow Gate 64 is a really unique and fun game on the Nintendo 64 games library, its the only puzzle-adventure game on the console, the game's style and setting reminds me a lot of Kings Field, Eternal Rings and Kings Quest
Man, this is one of the few N64 games I severely regret not having back in the day, still never played it :(
+Larry Bundy Jr my local NEVER had a new or used copy at any point. It's the only N64 game I never saw them have
N64 Glenn Plant I never knew it was that rare. I remember my mum picking it up because she loved the first one. There wasn’t many games she liked but Shadowgate was one of them. I was under the impression it just wasn’t a popular game because it wasn’t Mario or Zelda. Still, I enjoyed the crap out of this game, as hard as it was.
I got this game instead of the 2006 release DVD of Transformers the movie
Wonder what happened to the developers
Must play!
It makes me sad to know the huge amount of N64 games that got cancelled... so many adventures that we will never play
yeah its a shame because id like to do more episodes of the n64 beta project
Dinosaur Planet T.T
This game had a strange and creppy vibe, I remember playing this game and having so much fear from stumble upon someone. Everything is empty and in the majority of the game there is no one, but still, the game pass a feeling that someone is watching your every step. It is very creep on the church part.
Also, I really lost all my mind in the city when the guy arrest and kills you.
Anyway, great game. The music stills plays on my head, even after almost 20 years later.
Drove me nuts. Early internet walk-through days.
This reminds me a lot of King's Field aesthetically....
My favorite N64 adventure game! :D
I beat this game when it fist came out. I rented it and beat it over that weekend. Good game I always thought.
+Colonel1181 damn you must have put some hours into it to beat it in a weekend first play through
I would love a video on Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage. It is one of my fav games and my friend loved this one as well.
There is a guy currently reviewing all N64 RPGs and he did a video about a month or so ago on Aidyn Chronicles.
I've seen every video there is on this game, so far most people said it's okay-ish, the new guy ripped it to pieces.
I too wonder what Glenn's take on that game is going to be.
Game goes for roughly 40€ here. I'm still torn if I want to shell out that much for it or not.
Man, Aidyn Chronicles...
I was so excited for that game, but then it turned out so horrendously bad in every single aspect. It was the first game I ever returned, that's how disappointed I was.
I ended up getting a copy of The Sims instead, which at least had a nice house builder.
SeltsamerAttraktor It is a wonderful game but you need a taste for it. It is rather buggy but I was lucky to have a grey cart which is patched up some. It gets alot of crap for being ugly, having bland-ish music(which i like later on) and wonky combat but the story is quality and the fluid class/magic system which can make neat builds make up alot for it. The cast of characters and sheer dialog between all main characters gives it great replay value but most one shot ncp's have single lines so it depends. It reminds me of old school RPG games and D&D with a bit of tolken and lovecraft. It picks up heavy later on but starts off slow which is why I think most ppl got turned off. There is a cult following so if that gives it any credit I say it is a hidden gem myself, be it a rough one.
Well, I guess I gonna put those 40€ that the game goes for here towards other games on the console first which I still don't have, like Paper Mario or Legacy of Darkness.
I'm not going for a complete collection or any of that, so when a game is rubbish I'm not going to buy it, only what I actually want to play (eventually). Aidyn Chronicles sounds interesting enough that I'd give it a shot, it will stay on my list, but before I buy it I'll get the better games out of the way first.
HatoBlueWolf I was just thinking that. Best RPG on the 64. Even though I was a kid a could barley play
Oh my god, this game looks pretty cool. Thank you for making these videos, they're always fun to watch.
+Tavish DeGroot thanks for watching tavish!
I love this game! Still have the box and everything it came with :D
+Rayzers always love hearing from big fans of this lesser known title 😬
Nice.
I actually bought this game back then. I was a kid and the cover art sold it on me. I think I still have it somewhere.
Of course, the game has some very big issues and I remember that even then, I couldn't stand how bad the audio was. Other than the music, the audio effects are horrible. Still, I really liked it.
Back then, we had no walkthroughs and stuff... I got stuck in the "Mirrors" puzzle near the end of the game for months. MONTHS. And I solved it alone, but out of frustration. I just mimicked the body movement of someone running and throwing themselves on a mirror. So, naturally, as we would in real life, we would turn our back on the mirror to protect ourselves and I did the same in the game. And funnily enough, this was the solution...
It certainly looks like a unique game on the N64. Really atmospheric and slow paced. I'd definitely give it a try if the opportunity arises.
worth checking out for sure but you'll know quickly if you like it
bro ur in every fkn comment section wtf
This channel is incredible. Reviews are great and informative. I loved the original.
Thanks kenster!
This looks like just my kind of atmospheric fantasy game :O ...there's just something about it...
very underrated game. to bad these kinds of games are unpopular and have faded into obscurity. they show what the real world is like. this game is a real thrill. when I was a kid, this game creeped the hell out of me.
This needs a remastered
I never knew the UK PAL is so rare. This game has such an great atmosphere and music. I'm very glad finally someone acknowledged that in a review and has the same appreciation like I have - even back in the day. I need to get a copy again. Well Since I've grown up with the german version I should find a cheap copy somewhere :)
yeah it sells for a super high price - one of the hardest to find
I'm so glad I speak more than one language, could pick it up for 12€ buy-it-now on ebay, lol
+SeltsamerAttraktor yeah the euro language version is fairly cheap
I agree with every point you made. Used to love playing this with my brother when it came out. The music is absolutely fantastic and the atmosphere is eerie and forlorn.
Glad to hear from fans of this title 😬
I remember I got this game when I was around 10 years old and couldn't get into it. Mostly due to the fact that I didn't speak a single word of English at that time but I still vividly remember the dark and bleak tone that the game had. So it's somehow special to me even though I didn't play much into it.
+Alexander Bork the language barrier would certainly be a hurdle!
Y'know, I actually like the poor frame rate now. It gives the game the look & feel of an FMV adventure. The strange & foreboding music, the muddy & dark fantasy tone, and that frame rate really come together to create the closest the N64 would ever got to obscurities like Mansion of Hidden Souls, Lunacy or D or something. I guess it's all about expectations then, because obviously this combo appeals to a niche audience and the N64 really could've done with a proper adventure and/or RPG instead of that type of thing. I'm just saying, looking at it now, it definitely has the vibe of one of those types of games and it's odd (and obviously accidental) that they pulled it off in a real-time engine.
I remember getting this when it came out and I was 12, such a difficult game.
It would have been so hard then I think at that age
Played through the game and for me it counts as a hidden game with much fun to be had.
I should replay it sometime soon, i pulled an all nighter when i played through it and i got to admit at the really hard parts my chat helped me, because it was near 5-6 am when i finished it, lol.
haha yeah theres some fiendish puzzles in this game for sure
Loving all the reviews. Subscribed and looking forward to the next.
+SomethingNewEveryDay thank you!
You gag on the greasy meat.
+aleckermit 😂
aleckermit what’s up! Mr. Not for Resale PRO!
I still remember that eating sound effect. I played it when it came out and now I'm 31 and still remember how nasty is sound.
That’s what she said
The Rarest UKV title along with Tarzan
the atmosphere of this game reminds me of thief: the dark project
+Phreaker1997 very true
It reminded me of King's Field IV.
Gameplay is very differen though, obviously.
I had opposite thoughts about the graphics. The detail in geometry seems really impressive for the console to pull off. The N64 didn't have much room in memory for textures to display in a scene, and it seems they used this to its limit, until more tricks were found out how to do more later in the console's lifespan.
yeah a later title would have been awesome to see what they could do with more knowledge of the hardware
Yeah those screenshots were impressive if they are legit
You are correct. The graphics are ahead of the time for the n64. No game is going to model a book on a shelf or every step in a ladder.
You do excellent reviews mate. Great work
I would have bought this if I knew that you could move around in first person, the screenshots made it out to be an enhanced version of the original.
(Welcome back Glenn)
Ah cool you can now check it out and hopefully enjoy it
I always wanted this game and I think I might pick it up.. even though I might not ever play it
It’s expensive as heck now…..
Oh, I loved this game. Its still a favorite of mine, and one my top picks for N64.
Also I really appreciated that you mentioned that though the graphics and music were by no means impressive, that they totally fit the game. I loved the way the game looked and the music too.
And I never even knew there was a sequel for this game being made, haha. Is too bad it never came out.
love that avatar! I'm looking forward to the new 2 part mini movie of hey arnold
Haha, same. In fact I recently got my best friend into the show, and now hes excited for the movie, too
Moogi Beans
Theres a new hey aronold movie? Woa nice
Anybody else getting an Oblivion/Amnesia feel to this one?
The gameplay here gives me Kingsfield vibes.
I loved the original Shadowgate and always wanted to play this as a kid. It was never available for rental, I never found it anywhere so I could not experience it! Finally I have an Everdrive, so I am going to try it out for the first time soon.
Oh I hope you enjoy it then - be patient with it
Always remembered the music but not the name of the game. Good to have closure on that thanks!
Glad I could help
I remember renting this game at blockbuster because I had liked the cover art. But it bored me. Back then I was heavily into action games, so my lack of patience with these kinds of games was very limited. This definitely has me interested now. I enjoy a could thinker of a game!
yeah its slow in pace but you don't have do really do anything in a hurry
I recently played through Shadowgate 64 in less than 6 hours, which makes it quite a short game. The soundtrack and atmosphere are quite unique, but sometimes it feels like different programmers were hired for certain puzzles and video scenes. For example, the puzzle in the last tower where you have to design the flag of the true king, and where objects zoom in and out, is completely different from any other puzzle animation in the game. Also, the video sequences when the hero flies on a dragon towards the end of the game do not match the appealing 2D introductory scene from the beginning. It would have benefited the game immensely if the developers had maintained a consistent presentation style throughout the game and embraced the idea of open world exploration that seemed possible with the awakening of the dragon - at this point I fondly recall SNES titles like Secret of Mana, but that is just my humble opinion
.
Really cool to hear from someone who enjoyed this one somewhat. I know exactly what you mean but perhaps they went for something special with the dragon as opposed to the 2d intro to kinda make it feel special and unexpected? That’s what I always thought myself
Never seen this game before but as far as the graphics goes I thought it looked really quite good.
I've been waiting so long for this review!!! Love this game.
I passed on this game all my childhood... I didn't pick it up until last year.
It's a slow paced, gloomy and eerie experience. I kinda like it. 🤔
Defo! Takes patience but hey when we’re on lockdown it’s a good time killer right
What setting do you use on your Ultra HDMI mod?
+Madlittlepixel all standard except for auto anti aliasing and the widescreen option on
id love to try this game sometime
I never finished this game back in the day . I made it to a certain point and couldn’t figure out what to do next. It bothers me to this day
Shadowgate for the NES is 1 of my favorites for that system. Sadly I've had this N64 copy for years now but never played it. Cannot wait to play 1 day!
It's strange you just posted this, because I just saw this in a retro game store and never heard of it.
It's called the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon.
3:36 To be fair, "pickax" seems to be a mistranslation of sorts. In the Japanese version, the item is referred to as an "ice axe" (a tool used for climbing). It's a lot clearer that it's used for climbing rather than digging.
Great point!
So, I've been playing Glover on an emulator, and if takes me way back. Though I'd remind you of Glover. You did a video on the unfinished Glover 2, and even made a comment that you haven't reviewed Glover. Thought I'd do you, and me, a favor and remind you. I love this channel, it's a great source of nostalgia.
Just beated it today.
I have a magazine that talked this game up quite a bit, always made me curios
Don't think I've ever seen a copy of this.
its not a common one thats for sure
I FINALLY got a UKV shadowgate 64 boxed to!
damn good find! and likely pricey I guess?
Around £200 was searching for About 6 months
I just beat this game about 2 months ago. So fun
+Thomas Philpott how long did it take you?
N64 Glenn Plant a long time. I tried doing it without looking to the internet for help. I think between 8 and 15 hrs? Idk once i get off work ill load up the game and check. I think it keeps your time on ur save file?
That's a lot less than it took me to find all the darn tribals in Jet-Force Gemini.
I've never seen a copy of this. Looks interesting though, kind of like Myst.
yeah its kinda like that in a way !
Oddly enough I love the graphics of this game.
i returned this used, back in the day, but now.... woooow,... you can kind of pair this with Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage and iagine an indoors outdoor adventure. waaaay ahead of its time
This game looks rad af for a n64 game I think I'm gonna get it
heartman64 yeah it's totally tubular
I specifically looked for reviews of this game. I have an original US copy. I remember it being so confusing sometimes since it was my first experience with this kind of game. There was a specific part where you had to put a ring on the finger of a statue or something like that...and it took me hours to figure it out.
It's certainly an interesting game. Might give this a go one day.
Hugely underrated game. It has just right atmothere and interestion locations.
+M1XART hopefully more may now appreciate it
I never got past the labyrinth with the teleporter statues.
Your review is spot on. Love the channel. I’d love to hear your thoughts / review of legacy of darkness
Will get for my ED64. Reminds me of the Knightmare TV show!
+Mark Lee hope you enjoy it!
I've played this game so much that I know what to do without thinking or trying at all. Its kinda sad but oh well
Nice video ! Not really the kind of game that I wish to play, but I do admit it has a certain appeal. I've never been into point and click games really...
+Geek Gamer Gui see I'm the opposite as I really love them
Nice review. Hey Glenn when are you going to review Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon and Goemon's Great Adventure/Mystical Ninja: Starring Goemon 2?
Was a big fan of the NES original and the gameboy color remake. Always wanted 64 but never seen it out in the wild. Until now. It'll be arriving in the mail soon. I can't wait.
make sure they've sent you a legit copy, many people sell the Spanish language version cheap and deny knowing it wasn't English to unsuspecting people
Just got it today. And the game is running perfectly. It's all legit.
This one was of those games where I was too dumb to even get out of the prison part.
I loved this game. It's so interesting.
damn and i had the english pal version not knowing it was that rare.
Yeah super rare and low numbers of it made
I really love Shadowgate on the NES. I grew up with it and my parents love it as well. I remember being excited to learn about Shadowgate 64, and then I played it. I was disappointed. It seemed sanitized and dull compared to the original that I loved so much. I might have to give it another try one day since it has been so long since I've played it. I do still revisit the original regularly.
I've been waiting for this review, and I can only agree with the result. It's very rare kind of a 3D adventure game with first person view in time, when most(or probably all) poin'n'click games were made with prerendered graphics. Music and atmosphere are top notch, but I can understand that why fans of original Shadowgate were dissapointed.
saying that i do wish we had some traditional point n click games on the console
Have you ever thought of reviewing Bomberman 64: the Second Attack? Not a lot of people have reviewed it. I love my copy of it
+Tbone Productions yeah really like it, review will come eventually
this kindof reminds me of the ps1 dungeon crawler series kings field. very atmospheric and creepy looking.
+Gage Schleser yeah someone else mentioned that - I don't know the game but I'll check it out
I've never heard of this one, but it looks pretty cool. I'll have to try it out
+Father & Son Gaming hope you like it
LIKED!
I absolutely love this game. I used to play it heavily as a kid when I used to visit my Dad in the States in the late 90's when it came out. The music is amazing and atmospheric and really draws you into the story and setting, I was so surprised when I found it was a Japanese game because it gave off such an English Medieval feel. I had no idea they only made 17,000 copies as I already wondered why our PAL English version was so expensive...luckily though I picked it up last year for about £10 on Amazon and was so happy when I stuck the cart into the console and found out it was in English (I got swindled into getting the PAL ITA game a few years ago and I really wasn't happy)
With Shadowgate Rising I would've hoped for more characters, a much much longer game, same style of music and graphics and more warning when it came to deaths.
Great video, I may have to play my copy again and thank you :)
+Michael Whiteley 70,000 not 17,000 copies but yeah I too was once done for the ITA language one, thankfully Paypal protection sorted me out
this is a game i really want to try. I bet i'd love it now that im an adult
+nate defo try this one out its quite unusual for N64 at least
7:25 oh...you suddenly have my undivided attention.
This looks promising. I shall try it soon.
Hope that you enjoy it 👍
Excellent review! This is certainly a hidden gem that has received very little attention. The gameplay is so addictive, and the graphics, sound effects and music all give an excellent atmosphere to the game. It definitely can get difficult at times, and I had to go back and reread the books, talk to other npcs and use some trial and error but more often than not the solutions made sense. I absolutely love this game and just finished it and have to say I’m just amazed I hadn’t played this before. Also, I can only wish what the sequel would have been. But again great review of this truly hidden gem. The game immersed you w it’s atmosphere like no other and I thought the visuals fit the mood of the game perfectly. Are there any other similar 3d adventure games of this sort that you have played? Especially on n64, or ps2 (I love the graphics of those two consoles).
There are various Myst and Riven titles scattered across the PS1 and PS2 libraries. Other PS1 point and clicks include Discworld 1 and 2, Broken Sword 1 and 2, Blazing Dragons, Dracula 1 & 2, and Juggernaut. But for some reason the games this really reminds me of, despite not being point and clicks at all, are the King's Field, Shadow Tower, and Echo Night series. Although they are action RPGs (with combat), they play very slow and methodically and focus on story and atmosphere over action. Highly recommend those.
This will tide me over for a while.
I had this n64 shadowgate way back because I loved the nes original, this game does not live up to expectations and is pretty underwhelming overall, I have no regrets about trading it away either.
I'm hoping for Quest 64 review.
one day :)
Ick. Such a boring game, lol. Terrible rpg altogether. Now Paper Mario was probably the best rpg on the system, Ogre Battle was kickass as well.
Quest 64 (or Holy Magic Century as it was known over here) feels so damn unfinished. It's like they created the game world but didn't have the time to fill it
review Super Robot Spirits
Oddly enough I liked quest 64. I'm kinda a geek for those kinds of games. But that's just me
Has una Review del Gauntled de 64 uno de mis juegos favoritos!!
+Omar Hidalgo already reviewed in 2016
What's causing the horizontal lines that overlay the footage btw? Not noticed it on your other videos.
+London Metal Monthly not sure, some of the older titles have this issue - maybe a techy person will respond to say what's going down
Looks like it's using some bad dithering. It's like the game engine or console can't display certain shades of colour, so it scatters a bunch of pixels around in a pattern using the closest shades it can come up with.
See 5:00 or so, where some darker blotches on the coffin look relatively clean, but the medium grey parts look extra grainy.
Also, check out the outdoor scenes from Silent Hill for a similar example on PlayStation.
As for why it's so bad in games like this, I think it's caused by the gloomy colour palette (bright colours are easier to do properly), but maybe the programmers are just using a shortcut to save memory. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can clarify?
Yesyesyesyesyes. Finally not a sports or racing game :3
Been waiting for you to do this one.
glad i could make you happy
I'm actually quite surprised you haven't done Excitebike 64 yet. I know I know I keep bugging you with that game. But you referenced it before in reviews of some other bike racing games, and hey it's a racing game after all, just not with cars. I suppose it's one of the better games and you try to spread those out while you work your way through the library.
This game had such an epic soundtrack!
+ibanez2010 amen to that!
Very like From Software's Echo Night series on PS1
I know the the team from the Mexican magazine "Club Nintendo" was hired to translate the game into Spanish, and during the process they accidentally translated the name of one of the creatures that wasn't really a word. They accepted their mistake when they did the preview/ review of the game.
+edgar salinas ha that's an amazing fact! 👍
This is one of the N64 games I am missing and longing for to play :)
hope its worth the wait!
such an underrated title... reminds me a little of ShadowRun on SNES in that regard, though not quite as good as that one... each having 'shadow' in the title is just coincidence.
Never played and from the looks of it as a kid I probably would've given it its fair shot if I ever tried it. But I had a habit of renting games that I had played before and liked playing such as Fighting Force, Rampage World Tour, and Kirby 64 The Crystal Shards.
+KyuubiNaruto41 I haven't played Kirby 64 in a long time now - I should sort that
Can't go wrong in playing it I just loved using different combos of powers. Like Bomb + Cutter, Double Electricity, Cutter + Fire, Stone + Electricity, and Cutter + Electricity.
really good review, glenn! I like your n64-only channel. Did you ever play Animal Forest on n64?
+валера журавлев yeah the English patched version 😍
did you play it on emulator or you have english version replica?
+валера журавлев patch file on everdrive
N64 Glenn Plant
Plz review it if u havent
I tried this game a few years ago but could not figured out what to do. When I plunged into the water in the cave at the beginning, I gave up. Maybe I should give it a second chance?
+BlazeHeartPanther Blaze wow that is very early in the game
