    With food saver, putting the second one on top upside, down seals and keeps the second one from attaching to the first one, and keeps the gasket on! A win win for those using food saver

    I cut out parchment paper to fit between the two regular top lids. That keeps the lids from sticking together.

    Get an old pressure cooker stick the hose on the weight stem put tape over safty vents. Fill it with jars. Pump and seal them all at the same time be blessed

    I drilled a small hole into a lid and glue tacked it into the top the the sealer cap. This not only pushes the lid to be sealed down like an extra lid would but also relieves the vacuum between the lids. This eliminates the double lid problem as demonstrated in the video.

    Morning everyone! I have a vacuum sealer, and I was having problems with it not sealing, also. After watching lots of help videos that didn’t help, I finally bowed my head and asked the Lord what I haven’t tried! He told me that when I put the vacuum hose into the sealer appliance and put the lid down to seal, hit seal, then hold in the vacuum hose tightly to the appliance! Since then, I have had a seal every time! You can hear the difference. I guess the “tube” on the hose may not be long enough to reach inside? Thought I would pass along my success!

      I just got my tops from EBay! Came here because I started on regular jars and became very frustrated after one seal in the tries.,. I'll do the one extra lid placed upwards. Also I've been saving papers to wrap my jars in to pack away so that they don't get broken. They aren't going up on some shelves

    Great video... thank you! I noticed in the video you pried off the lids with a can opener. There's a better way to get the lids off the jar that doesn't ruin the lids. Use a spoon with the convex side facing up. Then run the spoon along the rim of the jar until it reaches the lid. Then just lift the spoon up to pry off the lid. It doesn't ruin the lid at all. I've had some lids for over 10 years and they still look practically new.

    I had an issue getting a consistent vacuum seal with the wide mouth sealer top due to inconsistent jar shapes. I tried all the tips but finally resolved the issue with an easy and inexpensive fix. I put 1 to 2 appropriately sized rubber bands around the rubber seal lip and now no issues and it seals much faster.

    • @job955
      @job955 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't understand what the rubber seal lip is. Are you putting rubber bands around the jar lip?

    • @sandlapper3044
      @sandlapper3044 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apply the rubber bands to the outside diameter area around the soft seal and not directly on the jar mouth. You can adjust the tightness of the seal by how many and the strength of the rubber bands applied. Regards

      I don't quite understand either. Do you mean you put the elastic around the edge of lid? If so, how do you place it on the jar? Does the elastic get sandwiched in between the lid and jar?

    I had many small jars that wouldn’t seal. After watching this video I found that the two lids stuck together so I drilled a small hole in the top lid, about a 1/4 inch, and have had very few miss seals since. When I do have a miss seal now I find that the lid is slightly bent.
    Enjoy your videos.

    Heidi on a lot of the older jars the rim is the problem. The rim is not at a standard placement. This is why you will need two lids. The two lids raises the lid attachment off the rim making the jar seal. I have found on older jars the rim is a shorter distance from the top of the jar.

    Good info on the brake bleeder, it may not pull the powder up under the sealing ring. will try that. We have had good luck using the food saver canisters and pickle jars, pasta sauce jars, olive jars from the grocery store. One commenter said they were sealing multiple jars with a pressure cooker, we will try that next. Thanks for the info/ideas!!!

    Heidi, off topic, but wanted to let you know that thanks to your wine making inspiration, I started a gallon and half gallon of mint wine the beginning of September. I removed the air locks last night and both were a success. I used apple mint, chocolate mint and a little lemon balm. They will be perfect for making some elixirs and alone have the benefits of the mint as well I would imagine. I had lots of mint, and wondered if mint wine was possible to use, so googled and found that it was indeed. I used my own berry ferment starter which I also learned from you for one, and the half gallon, I tried bread yeast. I made mint tea and then added the sugar and water to it after straining. The half gallon with the yeast is stronger, I am not a fan of wine and don’t drink, but had hubby taste it, he said it tasted a little like whisky, the other jar tasted better a little sweeter tasting maybe. Regardless, even though we don’t drink, I was super excited they worked and I now have homemade bases for elixirs. Thank you so much for sharing, for inspiring, for teaching. You are appreciated more than you may ever know. ❤️

      Many suggested turning the top lid upside down to prevent double sealing. Mine likely did that because I used the brake bleeder which seems to draw a better vacuum than the standard foodsaver machines, which is why I never needed to use a double lid with it

    Heidi - Thanks for the tips! I was not able to get my Jar Sealers during the fall. Right after the first of the year, they became available on FoodSaver's website. I ordered and got them! I had no problems with the wide mouth jars, but the regular ones were a challenge. First mistake - put the gasket in upside down. (Thanks for that instruction!) After that, I was 6 for 7 and got the 7th on the second try. Love your videos!

    The two lid trick does work and it’s not difficulty to separate the two lids should they seal together. To save time and effort I simply start with two lids.I’ve totally given up on Food Saver products after receiving poor customer service from them. It’s funny that you mentioned the canisters and their use. I didn’t know what they were for either.

    Heads up people. I just received my vacuum sealer chamber yesterday. It is such a simple tool to use. Patrick is building a tool that equals ones from the past. I would recommend buying this instead of the food saver lids. I am noticing a shortage of jars for canning. With this handy tool one can reuse store bought food jars. If canning jars become a hard to source item, this will free up some of your canning jars from storing dehydrated foods. If you compare the price of a set of food saver lids to the vacuum sealing chamber, right now they are comparable due to the rising cost of the lids. Factoring in the ability to utilize various size jars up to a quart, in my opinion the vacuum sealing chamber is the most cost effective way to go. As more people run out of canning jars, the alternative use of mylar bags with O2 absorbers will see a shortage also. Plus the cost of purchasing them will rise. God bless.

  • @Cdngardengirl
    @Cdngardengirl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I also found that sometimes the height between the jar threads and the jar shoulder is too short for the sealer top, so by adding a 2nd or even a 3rd lid, a seal can be made. And as someone else stated, some jars might not have a flat top lip, so the lids will never seal or stay on. I use a dark red nail polish to mark an X on each side of the jar so I don't try to reuse it. Those are saved for simple non-seal storage.

    I had huge problems with the regular lid sealer vs the wide mouth . this is what helped 1) make sure to have adequate head space so there is plenty of vacuum holding the lid down. 2) put a thin film of vegetable oil on the FS blue ring so it slides off easier 3) remove the food saver hose from the sealer before attempting to remove the sealer so there's no suction on that side.

    It took me a while to figure out the Food Saver mason jar vacuum lids, here is what i learned and now it works for me every time. First I put the mason jar lids in the oven at 170*F, this makes the “rubber” gummy and soft. Place a warm jar lid on a jar and when you put the Food Saver vacuum lid on the jar with the lid, twist the Food Saver vacuum attachment as you are pushing it down, this will stop the gasket from rolling in its groove and peeling off. Do the same when removing it from the jar. Second, as soon as the vacuum machine has finished the cycle, while pressing down lightly on the Food Saver lid, quickly disconnect the hose AT THE FOOD SAVER LID not at the machine. I think if you disconnect at the machine or use the off switch on the machine the pressure differential is not abrupt enough between the inside of the jar and the inside of the vacuum attachment to let the jar lid "grab" onto the jar and make a seal. Hope this makes sense...

    Thanks so much!!I I found out a possible reason this happens with the smaller lids. Some people found the Older lids in antique stores and they had about four times as much rubber!!! We used them again and again. Now they skimp on the rubber and recommend you only use them once and throw them away! Another way to sell more and Waste good materials!! I appreciate your New Method! I gave up on Foodsavers too breaking after two years. I use mostly jars. I have some things over 30 years old I treat kindly. However, three different sealers broke sealing mostly jars so I am doing it your way!! Thanks again! Foodsaver is going to carry the lid sealers. They ran out and had to wait a long time for them to be made again. And shipped during Covid I imagine from another country!

      O yes, I have found that too, I came across some never opened boxes of wide mouth Kerr lids at a garage sale one time that looked to have been from no later than the 70's. MUCH thicker! However, since the wide and regular mouth lids of today are both as thin as each other, if that were the issue with using the foodsaver tops, then it would be problematic for both sizes. I stopped having problems with the regular mouth when I started using the brake bleeder pump instead but never had problems with the wide mouth when using the foodsaver machine.

    Following your example, I found a bleeder kit at my local Harbor Freight store. Medical supply stores have oxygen supply tubing at various sizes. I found that oxygen supply tubing with an ID of 1/8" and 1/4" OD, will fit snugly into the opening of the food saver cap so that you don't have to hold it in place. This tubing also has quick disconnects that fit nicely into the brass nipple of the vacuum pump.
    And yes, I agree with you in that food savers do not hold up and are ultimately a waste of money, but if you are so inclined, you can take one apart and I bet that you would find that the pump part still works. Extract that and put it in its own housing, along with its power source and you have an alternate way to gain vacuum. Also, I was thinking that the air pump found in blood pressure monitors might be adapted for that same purpose. ... heck, if you can find a way to adapt the opening of a vacuum cleaner, you would have a neat way to suck the air out of your Vacuum Chamber ... think larger vacuum chambers for larger jars.

    this is my take on the regular mouth sealer issue... first off, ensure the rubber gasket on the lid is not cold, but at least room temp so it is pliable. i cut an 11inch cable tie to fit the wall inside of the sealer lid, crocheted a chain of cotton yarn and stuck it inside the the gap of the gasket to tighten evything up, then place a used lid upside down on the jar lid... viola! enjoy!

    I had been looking for the food saver jar lids and happened to notice that Amazon was expecting a shipment and was allowing pre orders. I ordered the set of both on September 8, 2020 and they shipped them to me on September 28, 2020. I just wanted to encourage others to read the print to the right. Even if they are out of stock at the moment, if Amazon knows there is more on the way, you can preorder. They didn't charge me until it shipped.

    It does work using 2 lids and you can just remove the second lid easily. You have to use "already used lids" for it to work the right way but you can try a new lid heated in hot water before you vacuum .

    Hey I couldn't get this to work until I used the vacuum sealer on the flat lid alone. It clicked right away and showed me it was working by releasing the scent of the contents. Putting the pump on the table and pushing down on it reduced hand fatigue. I put the rings back on afterwards - which is something I never do with heat- canned jars. Remember not to stack jars on top of each other. . . . And seal them with the rings off!

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, when using the foodsaver tops, you cannot leave the rings on, only put them on after the jar is sealed but when using the vacuum chamber instead, the rings need to be on but not tightly. I always store vacuum sealed jars with the rings on and I also stack them..

    I never had any luck using the Food Saver to seal the regular mouth jars without doubling the lids. Since I got the brake bleeder (same one as yours), I’ve had success every time. And it’s way more convenient than dragging out the machine especially since I weigh out my coffee beans in individual pots in the jelly jars. I love the brake bleeder.
    You also mentioned oven canning. I tried that last spring (when we first went into lockdown) since I had a lot of very expensive flour (yeah, your wondering just how expensive flour can get. Well $60/10 Kg bag expensive) that I didn’t want to lose. We eat ketovore here the last couple years so I am not currently using it. I followed the U-tube videos to the letter and had condensation form inside the bottles on cooling. And I absolutely had no moisture inside my jars (they were in the oven of my gas stove for 3 or 4 days drying at 130 degrees F). The pilot light keeps the oven constantly at 130. Neither was there any possibility that the lids weren’t dry for the same reason. I’m guessing maybe my kitchen is too cool in the early spring for this to work. Don’t know why but wasn’t a success story here.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never tried oven canning myself but seems like more of a hassle than what it is worth but I can see it being a good option for those who have no other means and are also looking to kill any bugs/eggs that may be in flours and grains

      Rain Country: I had it in the freezer for a few years (along with a specialty pasta, herbs, dried beans and other stuff that needn’t be there). I wanted the freezer space for, you guessed it: animal proteins. I’d be embarrassed to buy yet another freezer sooo.... Freezers here were pretty scarce last spring as folks were kicking themselves for discarding their old 25 cubic foot freezers and replacing them with 3 cubic foot freezers and were all trying to buy big ones again - in the usual panic.

    They have discontinued making the Regular Jar Sealer. I had one on back order and I received an email saying the Company will not be making them to ship to the vendors and they were being discontinued. I ended up buying one on eBay for 3xs the price.... UGH! Prices on these are getting really high. So if you need one get it while you can (No Pun) . Also I have heard two rumors about the jars and lids. I heard no new shipments will be sent to vendors prior to March of next year and then I heard another not until fall of next year. So if you see jars and lids you may want to grab them as the ones out there are all that is available. Happy Hunting!

    Here is a suggestion, poke a tiny hole in the middle of the lid and place electrical tape with a one side curled on to idself so when you go to remove the lid, you can pull on the tape with the crease in it so you don't have to use those edge removers, they destroy lids quickly.
