@@Cabelius I didn't see it much in pro play recently since the meta has changed but if it's your first week it's still effective up to gold or maybe even above.
Sure the push was “disgusting”, but it was also well executed, slow, methodical, and well designed. Kudos to the player. He executed very well and never got overly ambitious. GG’s!
This was definitely one of the more exciting ends to a match - you've got two fairly well balanced players, some great tactical decisions and a race for the landmarks at the end!! Awesome to see the differences in economy and unit choices too. Core going hard on the unit ball and Striker with the long range sniper rifle that is the English Treb. Great game and a close run match!
The dock from Core at 9:40 ish was absolutely amazing. He snuck that in behind the push back of the archers. Top level micro and awareness of players on how long they think they can push the archers off and knowing they can run a couple vills up and get it built. Absolutely blew me away that all of a sudden after a relatively quick engagement POOF! He as a dock.
Good decision from Corey to do a Base race at the end, he actually got a chance there. Trebutchets are so underrated in this game, he could easily counter he trebuchet pull with trebuchet of his own, yeah English have better trebuchet but you can actually destroy a trebuchet if you pick they by surprise with 5 of your own
Really exciting game! Strike could have mixed in a few stone wall towers with his walls to give the trebs the network of castles bonus as well, would have been filthy dpm
Drongo been watching you almost all your videos. They are awesome! Really appreciate the 4k uploads. With youtube compression 1080p looks really blurry. Thank you!
What a great game! I was on edge of my seat the entire back half of the game. Do walls have to be nerfed again, or just trebuchets? Maybe it would balance things if walls took longer to construct?
About the comment on casualties happening during retreats: In the old kind of war where melee weapon wielding soldiers met each other line vs line it’s correct that the retreat was the part of the battle seeing the high casualties, especially if it was a disorganized retreat or a full route. The reason was usually the winning side would then deploy their cavalry reserves that could ride down infantry out of line. In modern war though, the huge casualties happen when forces leave cover to attack without properly having suppressed or destroyed the defenders and get countered by artillery. napoleon Bonaparte is famous for having taken full advantage of this, using horse drawn artillery that could quickly be moved to where the enemy was on the move and exposed. And an example as recent as they come: the Ukrainians did the same thing against the Russians trying to cross the Siversky Donets river three days ago apparently wiping out an entire battalion in one go.
Very very few armies could pull off a false retreat as well. It was nearly impossible to communicate that to everyone and then have them all turn around to face the enemy again at the right time. Often false retreats would simply turn into routs. That's why the Mongols were so successful. A fucking brilliant usage of flags and runners to create a medieval radio system that could relay information without it being intercepted.
I feel like at this point against English you're probably going to want to immediately send a scout directly towards their base to check for incoming MAA.
I absolutely love pros who know how to wall-in. This is way too rare and it was such a delight. Age of Empires 4 is such a unique game that this english gentleman used at the finest.
Couldn't you do men at arms in siege towers to drop onto the walls and flood behind to push the trebs back, then bombards to blast the walls? Or rams bombards to break the walls then flood in infantry or pop trebs with springalds or culverin? Or an earlier counterattack. This strat didn't look that broken to me but maybe I'm wrong.
There's so many counters to this strategy.... Mass mangos could easily clear archers behind and on stone walls. They can also kill trebs and walls slowly if necessary. Mass cannons beat stone walls and trebs easily, especially with culverins to counter springalds (english doesn't have culverin) Or just make trebs of your own. Even rams and MAA could work
Honestly, the walls are more annoying because they don't have any priority at all. So when you fight against wall spam, you have to individually target each one and its super easy to just reconnect them (along with high health). More often I find that I break through a wall and it gets repaired which bugs the hell out of my units. It diverts a lot of attention for dealing with considering it doesn't take to much effort from the opposite side. I feel a solution could involve having non-finished walls have "normal" priority for siege (similar to gates). Siege will priortize gates as a normal structure but not walls and if you A+Move somewhere, you siege will often just faceplant on opponent walls (which is really bad when they can't fire melee range). Obviously the lack of siege doesn't make it as much of an issue this game, but when you get a moderate sized siege force, it still becomes annoying since you still can't deal with multi-layered stone walls to effective when being somewhat contested.
simply getting few more bombards or even trebuchets to counter that would be super easy to stop his advance....no need to nerf already paper thin stone walls
Yea I think so. Especially you see at 41:13 archers crossing the woodline so there was definitely a bit of gap there and trebs were completely helpless during base race
Yeeey finally darkage meta!! i love it. So now HRE is the Portuguese of AoE2? haha. I had a similar play against HRE today, Abbasid rampush and the HRE is just shocked from the early aggression haha
Has that men at arms charge speed boost always been a thing? Does it apply to all infantry or just men at arms? All civs? Does it work the same way as knights charge (cooldown-wise)? I don't remember ever seeing it mentioned as a mechanic anywhere.
I don’t think trebs are the problem-it’s stone walls. The initial foundation completely blocks unit pathing and they’re too hard to destroy if you are behind on siege.
Simple solution, always build enough siege. Stone walls are basically trading resource for time. For the player building walls, it's purely resource negative since walls don't even "trade" with enemy resource.
@@stylecine we'll I think they should nerf the Royal Knights because the French can produce very easily Royal Knights and the can stop you from gaining gold and until you will Stop them the will kill some villagers.
Not really. Usually you want to use your military to protect the rams and force the opponent to deal with your military or the rams, or split their military with both wich is all in your favor. You can if they don't have any units and you want to kill a TC for ex. To spam your archers In and outside the rams in case he takes out his villegers to take out the rams, you take out the archers and kill them, if they go back inside the TC you get your archers back in the rams to protect them. But usually. Unless you're playing against a noob, investing super early in rams and archers is very wood costing, with will not work in 1v1 unless you're playing against a noob. Maybe in 4v4 where you can team up with another 2 from your team to rush one guy. Wich can also fail, because the other 3 will age up faster, since you need to invest alot of wood in making rams that early.
frankly i'm surprised Striker didn't put his longbows up on the walls ... couldn't they have protected his villagers as they built the next line of defense ? edit : oh wait he does it at 40:45 ... still wondering why he didn't do it earlier ...
This may be obvious for you but as a AOE noob I need to ask. At 19:00 when Striker is making another mining camp what's the point really? I was also thinking why he makes so many lumber camps but that I can somehow understands because woods moves away as you chop it down but it's not like mining source is going anywhere. Is it a fact that there are so many villagers that it actually makes a difference to have two different drop off points so that villagers don't block each other or am I missing something very obvious. Thank you! :) EDIT: Actually I modify my question little. Gold vein had very little left so I can't possibly think why he did that but if it would have been almost full gold vein is that really a viable thing to do? Like I'm sure someone did math behind it that extra walking is costly... Anyways, these are good videos to learn something about this game :)
The idea is that because there are Romany villagers, they are on multiple sides of the vein so you place a camp for each side. One time I was playing with someone who put 4 camps around the vein to save time between where they mine and the camp
cant he counter it by using counter trebs? also maybe he coulda took out the villagers repairing and use market to get wood to repair and go for the long hull.
