    Fiat 131, Lancia Stratos, 037 and S4 along with Delta are not only best in class landmarks, but have set the path for modern Rallye development.
    These are milestones that shaped automotive history for many brands to follow.

      My father, one day, came back home after another long day in engine test room.
      He told me "these guys are crazy, they want to stick an F1 engine on a light chariot".
      They had just reached 1500HP and were aiming at 1HP x cm^3. S4 engine was 1750 cc..

    11 times rally world's champion. Lancia simply the best rally car manufacturer till the stop of group B. And this Delta S4, this was an absolute jewel of pure italian genius mechanical engineering and technic. 80's were like the reinessance of cars. No rules no limit, just 4 wheels monster with more than 600 HP produced by tiny 1.8 liters engine and 4wd. Pure bravery and recklensess.

      It never produced over 600 HP... the most powerful reported Group B car was the Audi, at 591 HP. And if it wasn't for the Audi's, there wouldn't have been an S4 or Integrale.

      They dominated group A more than group B, correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the group A intrergralia was and still is by far the most successfull Rallye car.

      While FIAT intention over Lancia acquisition might be questionable, if they don't do that back then stuff would be worse.
      While Lancia got the thang on innovative engineering, their production line was old & their company almost run at loss. The thing that hurts the enthusiast was that FIAT acquisition over Lancia ensure the brand survival, but not the brand values.

    Una bara... ma leggendaria come poche cose al mondo.
    Fantastica l'ingegneria della S4 (e dei gruppi B in generale) ma il vero gioiello dell'epoca non corse mai: la sovralimentazione triflux dell'Ing. Lombardi (destinata alla ECV) è tutt'ora qualcosa di straordinario.
    PS: nera opaca è cattivissima

      Ti chiedo scusa se ti correggo, in una intervista a Biasion ,lui ,la Delta nei test alla Mandria la definisce verde militare, pero' devo darti atto che in questo video sembri piu' nera che verde ! Non so, facile che mi sbagli, magari era un altro prototipo....!

    per me è più bella qui che in corsa. Il suono è più brutale con quel muggito del compressore che sembra un demone torturato - il frontale della stradale è più cattivo e dietro sembra un'astronave.

      Capisci che piloti c'erano una volta. Oggi nelle classi gt3 non si arriva ai 280 con i rapporti lunghi. Carichi aerodinamici ridicoli e aiuti elettronici di ogni tipo. Questi provavano auto praticamente inguidabili su strade pubbliche chiuse al traffico. Qui non c'entra niente il business o il marketing. Questi piloti venivano dalla gavetta e pure dura e volevano divertirsi e far divertire. Oggi per vedere qualcosa di tosto bisogna andare oltre oceano.

    the speed of this thing made me laugh its like roadrunner cartoon fast i hear it could do 0 to 60mph in 2.5 seconds thats as fast as the bugatti veyron ss and this was way back in the mid 80,s and on a rally circuit i think the bugatti wouldnt stand a chance as it would be too heavy round the corners where as this thing is just perfect

      Remember that the S4's times were on gravel, and were probably even lower than 2.5 seconds.

      Except that F1 cars run to up to 320 km/h where this cars will top out at 220 km/h. With this shorter gearing (and same amount of gears), it means that the Lancia can never keep up with an F1 car on a race track.
      The Lancia, obviously, excels at tight 'n twisty roads.

      @@johnclark448 But the ECV was an experimental vehicle, not even used in a racing series. That's like saying the Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak competes with F1 cars. It does, but it's a one-off hyper machine. I don't think Group B cars are in a way comparable to F1 cars of their era. Maybe only in raw acceleration?
      Group B (or the ECV car) are by no means slow, however. Don't get me wrong on that. I'd much rather have a Group B machine than an F1 car, of any era!

      I think hey mentioned somewhere that they do tarmac track test that the laptime can sit in the middle grid of the same era f1 qualifying time...(not sure how true is this)
      But i think can almost confirm that their acceleration 0-60mph on gravel is faster than f1 in the same year...

      Gordon Freeman Incredible car, and we all know what it ended up doing in the Rally world. Any idea why it sounds almost like an electric car in this video? Fast as hell, but I’m wondering if they used a massive muffler/silencer on it while testing.

    Quattro and 6R4 best sounding of the group B era by far but Delta S4 and 205 T16 were weapons grade,they came towards the end,sadly the RS200 never got time to shine.

    I'm guessing it's the supercharger that gives it thay odd yet recognizable sound? Since the 037 has that similar whirring sound, either way, not my FAVE group B but it's up there with the S1 Quattro and Metro 6R4

      WelshWolfie yep. The S4 has a twincharged setup. Supercharger on low revs and turbos on high revs.

    DELTA S4 evoluzione ed aggiornata darebbe filo da torcere anche alle nuove auto rally,era un mostro anche se va detto che tutte le gruppo B erano mostri. Ma che belle però

    questa è la lancia delta s4 che ha poco a che vedere con la lancia delta e lancia delta hf integrale...questa è una vettura costruta in 200 esemplari di cui molti destinati ai rally gruppo b....la vettura è una 2 posti con motore centrale posteriore di 1756cc con turbo e compressore volumetrico(che qui si sente chiaramente praticamente come un suono di puleggia che aumenta con aumetare dei giri motore) nella versione stradale aveva 250cv nei rally anche 6/700cv.per chi non avesse capito qcs.ciao

    Ti spiego, Il turbo sibila in maniera diversa.. non so come spiegartelo, però a sentirlo sembra quasi una turbina di aereo.. oltretutto il turbo, lavorando prevalentemente ad alto regime, non si sente quando i giri del motore sono minimi, il volumetrico invece si sente :) (a 0:45 si sente proprio bene).. per finire, il suono del volumetrico (essendo collegato direttamente al motore, tramite cinghia credo) va di pari passo al suono del motore ;)

    Mi chiedo come faccia certa gente (Fca) che è pure morta recentemente, a dire che la Lancia NON ha mercato perché
    NON HA STORIA!!!!!!!!
    Ha spaccato il sedere a tutti nel mondo delle corse.. certo che se alla ultima Delta che fa cagare dai quel nome Importante...

      Eh, si vendessero auto da rally nei saloni, sono sicuro che Lancia se la passerebbe molto meglio. Purtroppo il marchio dello scudo si è bruciato in Europa negli anni della Beta che come smettevi di guardarla arrugginiva, e il mercato su cui si vendono le auto premium che Lancia potrebbe offrire, vale a dire quello cinese, è già saturato dalle tedesche e da GM e quindi non interessa molto a FCA.
