I think the dye failure was because your satin is not a natural fiber. You might have to use the Rit DyeMore* dye instead which can be used to dye polyester EDIT: Clarified that I meant Rit DyeMore, which is made solely for synthetic stuff.
I did used rit dye for my second try! But it didn’t work so i just fast forward everything 😂😭 and i also tried dylon dyed for the 3rd time and still didn’t work 🥹 really not sure what went wrong?? The amount of water??? Not enough vinegar/salt?? 🥲🥲🥲
@@yanachin If its synthetic fabric it might be that the temperature of the water was too low... Natural fibers take the dye more easily because they are made out of plants and are designed by nature to want to absorb water, but synthetic fabrics are made out of plastic so you have to basically boil them in order for the dye to penetrate deep enough for it to stick
@@shelbyhiromi ohhh maybe thats why! I did boil the water but i guess the water must have cool down after 20mins. Maybe next time i need to continuously boil the water with fabrics together. Thanks for the tips yaaa 🫶🏻
@@yanachin synthetic fabrics are notoriously hard to dye, you're correct that you need to continuously boil the fabric in the dye, like a soup lol 😅 I have a big stock pot I use just for dyeing fabrics, just keep your dye at a simmer, not a rigorous boil (so the dye doesn't splatter everywhere), and gently stir it so you don't get a patchy result
@@yanachinalso be careful when boil dying your fabrics!! i’d do a test swatch if you can, to see if the fabric warps/wrinkles too much because of the heat exposure.
I did some research on (semi) accurate historical clothing and since Maomao is technically of lower class, she should be wearing garments made of natural fiber like cotton (silks were for the rich people lol) but you still did a good job! Looking forward to more projects from you~
The only accurate part of the costume is basically the sewing pattern i think 😂😂😂 i wanted to buy cotton at first but kinda fell in love with these satin fabrics 💓

At the 5 Dynasties Time (Setting of the Anime) There was still Linnen and maybe Rami and Hanf in this Region more or less in common use. (Silk, wool and fur was always used) Only in the middle of the Series there was a change to cotton, when the Indian startet trading with cotton. So around Ep 19 Connon got common enough to be in use for the higher Maids. My guess is that cotton was around 920 used by higher ups and those near Indian border. Central plains where her place was.... kind of startet using it.
Honestly, even if it's not the right color, that fabric is still gorgeous (both in pattern and color); and the entire cosplay comes together very nicely :D Very fun video too!
One thing ive been wanting to see for a long time is historically accurate cosplays of.. really any non modern character- doesnt matter where from (though especially anime characters) I just think historical fashion is really cool- not just for looks but also for methods and the work behind it
Sameeee i too like to see people make historically accurate stuff but very hard to find cosplay version because most people will just use the modern sewing pattern as long it looks like the character 🥹
Even if the color isn't 100% accurate to Maomao, I think you still look absolutely incredible and did an amazing job! I love that you wanted to use a historically accurate hanfu pattern for the cosplay, too. It adds so much more appreciation for the historical and cultural background of the character. The Apothecary Diaries has so much depth to the story, and seeing a cosplayer taking that cultural richness that's shown and making it into a reality is beautiful.
Oh girl you made me laugh sooo much xD In my opinion you don't need to be that accurate with the original character! Your color is wayyy prettier than the original Mao Mao Hanfu

@@Brenilla i actually bought that dye because its the only green dye that i found at that time 😂😭 and then i finally found rit dye and dylon dye but i realized after dyeing 3 times with different dyes my mistake was not continuously boiling the water i guess
I have a suggestion on your next Maomao cosplay costume. Here's some spoilers tho, especially if you haven't read the Apothecary Diaries light novels. In the 5th light novel, Master Jinshi, Maomao and a bunch of other people from the Inner Court travel to the western capital to attend a rather large and extravagant party. In that party, Maomao was wearing a east-west fusion ballroom gown which you can see in the illustrations at the end of the light novel.
Ooohhh!! That looks interesting! I haven’t read the light novel yet but maybe when the time comes where that ballroom gown scene appear in the manga or anime i will think about it 👀✨
@@yanachin if you're curious on what Maomao's ballroom gown looks like, you can go to the Apothecary Diaries wiki, go to light novel 5 and its in the gallery section at the bottom of the page. YT doesn't like it when people share links in comments so I hope my description helps.
