Love the color changing fabric. I think it brought what you intended to the dress. Love the pun. My father’s name was Merlin but it was spelled Merlyn. The number of times he was called Marilyn was ridiculous. So this really brought a smile to my face.
As a person that took sewing classes to learn how to make garments...I have to say that you are hard on yourself (probably due to "helpful" comments on Your videos about how to do things). Do what works...I think anyone born after the 1950's sews because it is a problem solver for them. Either because we can't find what we want to wear...so we make or alter garments to work for our needs and taste. Do it however works. There is no right or wrong way. Also you have inspired me to use parts of patterns in different ways or make multiple patterns work together. I didn't learn that in classes...I learned that from You and Your Videos....so thank you.
This is amazing. I made my partner sit and watch the reveal with me. Also, that's the pattern that I used for a dress for my 30'th birthday party dress. Loved it!. Vogue patterns are NOTORIOUSLY so much smaller size wise than others. Used a different one for my wedding dress and had to INCREASE the pattern 4 sizes to get it to fit.
Oo la la! Those spicy Merlin come hither looks!!! Actually, you do an INCREDIBLE Marilyn! And, contrary to one of your final comments, I found the humor in this highly nutritious - this is what our world needs right now!
Not even a joke, I would 1000% love to hear you sing more. I love music from the 50's and think you have the most beautiful voice so well suited to the era. Love the dress too of course, always entertaining to watch your creations.
oh boy... I KNOW this fabric personally xD It's not easy to gather, or make it lay nicely when gathered. It's so springey. I used this in my Northern Lights costume, and for my bodice I ended up having to pin the folds I wanted in place and do some handstitches in various spots to keep them in place. I had a fitted lining that I draped the fabric onto and could stitch it in place how I wanted it to lay. It is a gorgeous fabric though! Was worth the extra efforts to make it do what I wanted. Well done on your Merlin Monroe!!
I made this pattern years ago in a red silk chiffon and silk lining to go to the opera at the Met. The gathering is definitely easier with very lightweight fabric.
This one would have benefitted from angling the sides of the panels. Little less fabric to put in the gathers. I assume that's what went wrong g with the yabbo hammock parts too. Just too thick to gather into the space.
I'm not trying to be an "Um Actually" here, just offering a pointer ... When you're doing the 'pen on a string' circle thing, the string needs to be as close to the tip of the pen as possible. Having it on the "butt" end means it wobbles and the line is squiggly :-)
Not sure if anyone in the comments already recommended this, but pinking shears are your friend when dealing with fray-crazy fabric. They cut in a zig-zag and makes it harder for the weave to unravel.
Came to the comments to see if anyone had recommended pinking shears yet. I remember playing with my mom's as a kid, to her dismay. It was one of many lectures I received about not using the good scissors 😅
Honestly you killed the makeup transformation! The beauty mark and wig completed it, and of course the mustache-beard! Also the saucy merlin monroe was giving me life, and your editing skills are amazing! Love your videos, Rachel!

Best. Reveal. Ever! 🧙🏽♂️ Absolutely fabulous. I've not used zips in roughly a decade, it's hooks and eyes (and to a lesser degree buttons and buttonholes) all the way for me.
If you are ever in the mood to torture yourself with that fabric again, a small tip. A heated craftknife - aka a woodburner with an exacto blade tip does wonders for cutting it out and sealing your cut lines in one move by fusing that edge. I usually work over sacrificial cardboard with it because it will melt my cutting mat, occasionally I'll do a silicone mat but those can be cut by the blade itself and I don't like damaging them in that way. I do keep a silicone mat nearby so I can set the tool down safely while it's hot.
That does sound safer than my approach, which is to light a candle and then slowly pass the cut edge through the heat column to melt the cut edges so they fuse. It's not super precise, but it does feel satisfying 😅
That fabric is sooo pretty and i love the stars and the little hat. Someone may have already mentioned it but when using fabric that frays that badly it really helps to cut out your pieces with pinking shears. You can also overcast the edges and then you won't have to use all your fray check.
I think the bodice needs to be gathered more at the top and bottom, thats why it's so weirdly balloony. That and then ironed in place would keep that volume less unruley
I heard ‘merlin Monroe’ and assumed we were in for a reverse mermaid situation. Like the merlin fish… It’s not what I pictured, probably for the best, and it is delightful!

2:43 I had a high school math teacher who would wear suits made from this fabric. He had several different colour combinations. He was also a former Olympic ping pong champion from an Eastern European country - which was pretty awesome 😂 He’d be in the hall/gym at lunchtime showing kids how to play.

Rachel you are my comfort watch 💖 I’ve been going back and rewatching your videos, because you always bring the coziness, goofy vibes and vicarious productivity. Love you and thank you 😊
Thank you, Rachel, for making me laugh this morning. That beard is fantastic. 🤣 The dress is so pretty even if it's itchy. I'd wear that on a fancy date or something. I love the blue to green color shift, and the stars are so pretty!
Another Rachel classic! A tip on the bulky gathering: your gathers will lay much flatter and give a less cupcakey skirt if you make them smaller. I love gathering by hand, and I make my stitches about 1/4” wide. Looking at those technique, I’m guessing your gathers verge on 1/2”, which makes them bulky, unable to lay flat, and more likely to have pieces of the skirt get stuck in the seam distorting the skirt further ❤️
Thank you for sharing some wisdom! I too struggle with handling gathers in a way that turns out even minimally flattering, esp around waistline & bust, so knowing what to try is a big help! 🙏
@@anna_in_aotearoa3166 aww yay! Yes I make my gathers as small as possible. For light weight fabrics, I even do 1/8” gathers. The smaller it is, the more evenly the fabric gathers up and it’s so much easier to sew over the tiny ridges than it is to sew over the big mountains that end up stacking more like pleats. Good luck with your next project!

you did a wonderful job, rachel--my bestie and i howled laughing our way through it! love the final dress, make-up, hat, and beard!
Brilliant and spectacularly hilarious! I seriously needed this whimsy and humor today Rachel! Please never change or apologize for sharing your hilarious brain with us! ✨ I am also the current proud owner of weird sunburn lines, including the parting in my hair so I feel you. 😅
Ouch!! That sounds extremely painful while combing or washing hair 😭 Hope it heals up quick!
Dear Rachel, thank you for what you do. Your creativity and silliness bring joy and peace to my life. What you do matters.
God bless you.
2:43 I had a high school math teacher who would wear suits made from this fabric. He had several different colour combinations.
He was also a former Olympic ping pong champion from an Eastern European country - which was pretty awesome 😂
He’d be in the hall/gym at lunchtime showing kids how to play.
that's amazing
That was FANTASTIC! I laughed so hard with your surprise I scared my husband. Still crying, so well done. Thank you for sharing your incredible talent and uniqueness with us.
I'm so excited for autumn content. I'm READY!!
Look…is this the best thing you’ve ever made?
YES!! I freakin’ love this. Just all the wonder, creativity, chaos, beard glue…just perfection 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
No apologies necessary, thank you for serving
THIS, is why I'm subscribed to this channel. ❤
