I splashed out in the Black edition this year. It's an amazing brush. Even for priming I don't use cheap Chinese brushes. In the end they are just a nightmare waiting to happen. My main detail brush now is the H&S Squidmar Black edition and my workhorse brush for priming or terrain is the Iwata Eclipse HP-CS. Both solid and reliable.

it's funny how the parallels run, but I worked in the gun industry here in Canada for 10 years, and one thing I learned is always strip & clean a new cheap "gun" before you use it. The number of times I've found metal filings, caked on grease, etc from factories was always high but cleaning it before use always reduces the headaches.

    Oh hey, Squidmar team,
I have a video idea for you: How to improve the performance of a cheap (or even expensive) airbrush.
I personally use teflon tape or bee's wax on threaded seals, but my personal "life hack" is automotive polish for the needles.
You have to be extra cautious, as you can damage the tip if you're too aggressive, but I use this product called "Eagle One Nevr-Dull". It is a chemical and physical abrasive pad meant for polishing car parts, but It works FANTASTICALLY on rough airbrush needles. I have also used it to polish the inside of roughly machined paint cups.

Honestly I’ve only ever purchased cheap airbrushes because I simply don’t have $200 to drop on an airbrush. All of the airbrushes I’ve ordered have worked fine. I’ve even purchased the portable airbrushes. I simply use an air hose with them so I don’t have to hold the compressor. My advice would be to shop around, read the reviews and hop on TH-cam to see what other creators think. I purchased an accessory and cleaning pack for my airbrushes. Comes with different size needles, nozzles and cleaning accessories. Great for fixing any issue you may have.

I also realized pretty early on that the "portable" airbrushes get so warm at a certain point of use your paint just dries in the airbrush. They are great for the first 3 minutes, so very quick paintjobs, main layers, then it needs like an hour cooldown. I'm on the fence about them. They're handy for that "I only can paint one mini today and I just lay down the baselayer" but if you really want to grind them out, they s*ck.

  • @Chauc3r
    @Chauc3r 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

when you do these type of comparisons, if you paint the mini's all the same, it'll be easier to compare the differences at the end to something that is painted with a higher quality airbrush.

I say this every time I watch an airbrush video.
My Iwata Revolution: 5 minutes of painting for 1 hour of troubleshooting I hate it.
My Harbor Freight $25 airbrush? The unstoppable machine that keeps painting.
My Master brand compressor and tank? Absolutely fantastic
My Master brand airbrushes? Paperweights. Absolutely unusable.
I can not stress how great my Harbor Freight airbrush has been. Same needle/nozzle size my expensive Iwata, and yet I barely have to service it. I think in the 2 years I've had it, I had to do a full tear down troubleshoot of it twice.
If you live in the US and can go to Harbor Freight, get the Avanti 0.3mm airbrush.

    • @witeshade

@@witeshade You know, I never really thought about that. I can't find any parts for it on HF's website, but a servicing kit for a Master airbrush is about $15, so just replacing the whole airbrush isn't that much more expensive (though I admit that is certainly not ideal).
Also, according to reddit, the source of super accurate and not at all ever wrong information, says that any generic 0.3mm needle you find on amazon should work.

Before I bought an H&S with a compressor, I first tested whether an airbrush was for me.
The airbrush with the compressor directly on the gun was already practical for priming work.
Only the cleaning was not really easy, I noticed the difference with the H&S which is much easier to clean.
But the most important reason for changing was the possibility of getting spare parts should something need replacing.

The regular H&S airbrushes are much nicer than the modified cult of paint ones - you pay way too much for hobby white labelling. I'm very suspect of Cult of Paint / Artist Opus (same company btw, also connected to element games) branding whenever I see it - their sable hair brushes are good but way overpriced.

I get the fun of rating the worst reviewed airbrushes, but how about also throwing in some reviews for the highly reviewed cheaper airbrushes/airbrush kits. For example there are a number of kits on UK amazon with airbrush and compressor for around the £50-£70 that have hundreds of reviews and average 4+ stars. Would be really helpful to have a review of that type of product that people are actually more likely to buy, rather than super cheap crappy reviewed products that people will probably avoid anyway.

I like how good a airbrush works and the paint jobs that come from it when in the hands of someone that knows what they are doing!?! But that is NOT me! Unfortunately!!! Actually, airbrushing annoys the hell out of me! I’ve bought 4 different kinds of airbrush’s. At different price points. But all with either good reviews or great reviews! And they never last longer than a few minutes of painting!?! And for everything you can say, I’ve already tried it or looked and NO to all!!! I just don’t get it!?! But I’ve also given up trying to figure it out! Maybe someday I might try again……. but only if I hear someone suggesting something I’ve never heard/tried before?!? Which I doubt!

I revisited this video after watching the most recent Squidlybits video and discussing airbrushes. The Harder & Steenbeck Ultra 2024 retails for an average of $300 in Australia. That's far too expensive for me. Especially given I'd have to buy a compressor as well - which is usually around $200 for a crap one. Has anyone tried the Metro Hobbies basics dual action AB for $99?
I tried FOUR airbrush kits sold recently at ALDI and they were all defective. No surprises form ALDI though. Their stuff is always garbage. Refunded without any argument.
