    I used this stuff on my driveway and around my pool, best stuff on the market. Key is making sure the prep work is perfect. I live in Michigan I've had my driveway plowed many times didn't even scratch the stuff. I think it literally would take Dynamite to get this stuff out. Applied it in 2015

    Proper way to do around a pool is clean up your crack put silica sand about a quarter-inch to the to half-inch of the silica sand in the crack then filled with deck-o-seal then wait a few seconds then throw silica sand on top of the deck-o-seal to give a concrete texturing look

    I always use sand to fill in the large gaps or voids. A 50lbs bag goes a long way. Sanding while tacky is a nice finishing touch. Your finished work looks good!

    Add foam or silica sand to fill in any holes and you won’t have a problem with mastic sinking, prep it’s very important. Good job tho 👌

    Nice job. I have a gap as wide as 2 inches between where the pavers end and where the pool edge starts (ie..curved white edge.) Could I do this process with backer rods and the sealant? Will it hold up to kids jumping in pool ahd overslash for a good amount of time? Right now I'm using gator dust. Thanks

      Good question. I had my pool copings reset and deck seal replaced and I don’t like the job they did with the seal. For one there was a lot of wavy spots where there was run off I guess they over filled some areas. I too wondered if I could go around cutting a straight edge to it. Next time it needs replacing I’m doing it on my own.

      The blade I used on this project has been in service for several years and multiple projects. Fresh blades are always great, but I find these oscillating blades to be very durable when used on wood.

    Hi, I'm a new DIYer and have the same problem. I have an Old inground pool and there was no mastic backer etc. seems like it moved a bit. I'll need to use that tool to remove some concrete that appears to have shifted into that space in some areas. what is the name of that tool you used to clean the area up before placing backer rod? Also do you know how deep the backer rod should go down?? Thank You Elaine

    • @EkalbGnilrad
      @EkalbGnilrad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tool is called an oscillating saw. Most of these tools come with a small assortment of bits, but you may want to consider buying a knife-edge tool for this job, it goes through the old mastic like butter. The backer rod should sit 3/4”-1” below the deck. If your gap is deeper than this, use some all-purpose sand to fill in the gap before the backer rod.

    curious what did you end up doing after winter? I have this issue right now but not to the same degree as your gap.

    • @EkalbGnilrad
      @EkalbGnilrad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s been three years since I conducted this repair and I got at least two flawless years out of the new mastic seal. This past winter, the mastic started separating from the coping again and I had a little more settling in the pool deck. I think another repair may buy me enough time to plan my pool deck replacement.

      Monica. Buy polymeric sand from HD. It's found in the garden section. Add a little water, once you filled gaps with a broom. The water helps solidify the sand.

    • @EkalbGnilrad
      @EkalbGnilrad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Due to the size of my gap, I used three large tubes to get down one side of my pool. With a regular gap, you could probably do the entire pool with 3 large tubes.

    • @EkalbGnilrad
      @EkalbGnilrad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sean & Jacqueline Kerrigan I wouldn’t expect the new mastic to bond well with the old mastic. It’s quite easy to remove the mastic once you get a loose end, so I would advise removing and replacing all old mastic.

      In my case, the pool deck is settling due to water running under the deck and down the hill behind the fence. The ultimate solution will be installing a footing under the deck during a remodel.

      @@EkalbGnilrad sand as a base is better. mastic will crack in middle and sink again sooner than if used sand backer its a much better grip and would only have required 1/8th inch groove at top leading to little sika needed. we charge 7.00 a linear foot for this and good reasoning. lasts for many many years if installed correctly

      @@EkalbGnilrad- thats a bummer. I had a pool service that did mastic install last time. It has lasted 7 years. I just installed this product on my driveway. Not looking forward to redoing that job in three years. I thought this was permanent? Haha. At least longer than three years.

    • @EkalbGnilrad
      @EkalbGnilrad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jbright97 on closer examination, the mastic is in great shape in many areas. The sections that need repair have more to do with the deck continuing to shift rather than the mastic deteriorating.

    Folks let a professional certified pool and spa operator do this work. The reason this "man" didn't notice the pitfalls until after the work was done, was because he didn't put sand in before laying the mastic down. By putting sand down you will see the pitfalls and seal them appropriately prior to applying the mastic.

    Replace you're hydrostats.. I'm guessing they are sticking a bit and allowing ground water to flex you're pool.. ... Pop the main drain covers off and grab that octagonal thing and lift up and release a few times to clear the debris.. your can replace each one for about 20bucks.. if you have the basic understanding of plumbing..

    • @EkalbGnilrad
      @EkalbGnilrad  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good eye there! Two unfortunate realities exist here: 1) the pool isn't lifting, it's actually settling on the shallow end and the deck is drifting down the slope behind the pool and 2) when I drained the pool last summer, I couldn't find any hydrostatic valves anywhere in the shell. Not in the main drain compartment and not in the floor of the pool...they may have been surfaced over when the plaster was replaced years ago. At any rate, I'm pretty far up on a hill, so I suspect the water table is 80-100 feet below my pool.
