  • Let's talk about cheap and good hawker food. To help with rising costs of living in Singapore, all coffee shops leased from the Housing and Development Board will need to offer budget meal options by 2026.
But how do such meals, which cost around S$3.50, affect hawkers? The Deep Dive podcast explores if such measures are sustainable and who should pay for it.

Prices will keep going up. Because there are more and more millionaires in SG, who still eats at hawkers. A $5-6 plate of chicken rice is chicken feet to them. The lower income residents will suffer, they have to pay the same price for their food.

Well said. I jus finished watching the 20 mins version of this video. Really disappointed that all 4 of the people in the video and especially Steve thinks those people who complain the price increase in hwaker are all real cheapskate who complain only because they feel entitled.

Mr Seetoh criticised the practice of bidding for hawkers to secure a stall in the hawker centre, arguing that the government should do away with it and offer fair rentals and give it to the most deserving hawkers. My opinion exactly get rid of the bidding system

If constant PAP intervention does not solve the problem, then perhaps the intervention is the problem. The easiest way to solve the problem is preventing PAP from doing more market distortion. The free market and free competition works well to solve problems on its own.

Mr Seetoh, renowned for his consistent advocacy for Singaporean hawkers, took to Facebook on 31 May to question the NEA’s rationale for such long closures, which could evidently affect the livelihood of hawkers at these centres.

According to Shin Min Daily News, the hawker who won the bid is 51-year-old Yang Ailan. Ms Yang revealed to the reporter that she has been operating “84 Coffee House” at the hawker centre for over ten years.

Many of these young hawkers closed their stalls after a few months, due to a high starting rent and being unable to generate enough income to make ends meet.

Seetoh suggested another reason for the exit of these hawkers is that many former coffee shop vendors overbid on their rental prices and were unable to sustain their stalls in the long run.

Get rid of the bidding process la, ” said Makansutra founder Kf Seetoh, in response to the recent news report on vacant stalls in the bustling Amoy Street Food Centre.

Seetoh pointed out that many hawkers would not be able to survive financially for three months without revenue, while still needing to cover their ongoing expenses like mortgages and family needs.

They cost is so prohibitive what. Fuel got tax, your van to go get good fish also go up. Your utility for commercial is way higher than residential use. Not to mention their own Labour? It's all fun and games trying going green and carbon tax until it is a cost imposed on everyone.

Sorry, read the caption as "Can the Singapore govt keep costs of living manageable for those who re-elect them every 4 years?" I think the answer should be yes.

So is this video suggesting, we should accept the price hikes and continue to vote one way?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣as it's nothing to do with Any Policy? And price hike by unreasonable amounts should be regarded the same as price hike by reasonable amounts?

@@celestialstar124 it's kinda shallow in content quality, is it not? State media is digging own grav......oh must not say it. Need to be politically correct. I so honest

Food, Air and Water. Those are the 3 Basics. If an administration cannot make these easily available to all, you can be sure the people will not remain quiet.
Cutting hawker food is like cutting subsidy for public transport. "There's no economic case! We can't keep subsidising so many inputs! (Rental for hawkers in this case)" Says the short-sighted economist.
Really? So don't build roads then. Don't maintain your public transport too then. Oh wait, we're already failing to do those right?
Fail these, and you will begin to wonder why your productivity levels are falling. Do not underestimate the positive externalities of cheap food on-the-go for the working population. That is a grave mistake.
There is a difference between meal-prepping at home by choice and by necessity. One makes the office-goer happy to eat healthy. The other makes the single parent working multiple part-time jobs unable to have enough time to show up to work punctually. Please re-think this.

Please lah, Steve only work in hwaker for 1 day. You think the hwaker will give him all the dirty stuff to do?
Steve actually said in the 20 min version of this video that everyone are cheapskate
They feel entitled that hwaker food should be cheap so a 50 cent price increase they complain
Steve also think $15 for prawns noodle is acceptable.

The answer is , Hawker Foods have remained cheap and good for decades until gst hike which triggered all sorts of price hikes. Of course, politically correctly, I would say GST hike may not be the only factor but also global warming 🤭🏳️🫣🤣
So, short answer is Yes, SG hawker foods can remain cheap and good as it's a proven Fact. But rentals have gone up tremendously.
I like how people cherry pick the reasons for price hikes but ignore the root cause

    • @celestialstar124
      @celestialstar124 หลายเดือนก่อน

No no no, it's not gst hike
It's actually the Russia war that raise prices up by like 30%. Most supplies prices shoot up after the war started.
My grandmother is 50 years hwaker, her stall is not expensive. She choose the price to bid. Of course if it's a popular location more people bid and some dumb people bid too high.
