  • Welcome to the 1st Grocery Haul of 2024! After the Pantry Challenge I was itching to get some GROCERIES! I take you with me shopping a bit, check out COSTCO for the first time in a while, go over everything that I bought and then total it all up! I give a peek around my pantry too as I load up some items I bought to stock things back up! It was a hard shop after the 2 month Pantry Challenge! TEMPTATION was EVERYWHERE!!
    I plan on KEEPING TRACK *again* of how much money I spend on GROCERIES for the WHOLE YEAR in 2024! It really helps me STAY ON TRACK (usually...) with my budget and be mindful of what foods I'm buying. It's always fun to see what the PRICES FOR GROCERIES are in different places! I enjoy a watching a good GROCERY HAUL too! Join me and compare your prices to CANADIAN GROCERY PRICES! See what I BUY for GROCERIES and to STOCK MY PANTRY! With all the PRICE INCREASES I'm trying to SHOP SMART and BE FRUGAL (...I mean...MOST of the time...LOL)!

    It's okay....it's fine....it's not that bad.. LOL Did I fall for every temptation?? Ohhh Costco has so many things that I want to buy and they feed them to you while you're there to entice you some more! NOM NOM haha It was great to grab some things after a long stretch without groceries! I don't think I've been shopping since before Christmas because we went away for the holidays! I was lucky I got away with as little as I did really...🤑🤪

    Love your splurge haul! You deserve it, after being so disciplined for the last two months. They are going to build a Costco in my city, and I’m glad that it’s not too close to me. I have no discipline and it seems like I always shop when I’m starving. At least you bought things you know you’ll like. I always end up getting home and saying, “why on earth did I buy this? And this, and this…” anyway, thanks for sharing!

    That's actually a decent price for all those groceries. We spend just about that when we shop at Costco when I splurge. When I focus on the sales and get to the nitty gritty I can spend less than $200 at Costco which is amazing. My local grocery is ShopRite and they have extra savings when they have the clip to coupons deals using the app or the kiosk in the store. Glad you were able to do your big grocery haul. When you love grocery shopping, especially when you know you have a deal on it, then it becomes therapeutic and rewarding. Eh, maybe not relaxing at Costco but those sale prices are amazing!

    First of all…. I LOVE that your freshCo receipt said “it’s value-licious” 😂 that made me giggle. Our favorite things to buy at Costco (in the US) are; microwave popcorn (not because it’s a great deal, but because my husband is picky and he likes the Kirkland brand best), their syrup (the fake corn syrupy kind😂) is the cheapest I can find anywhere, we also like to buy their bulk pancake mix…. But we are a family of 5 and that may take you YEARS to polish off! They also have frequent deals on toilet paper and facial tissue. Our #1 favorite thing to buy at Costco was block cheese, but ours recently stopped selling block cheese 😢 and we don’t like all the anti-caking ingredients in pre shredded cheese. We also shop the sales on coffee there. Groceries have gotten insanely expensive lately. I still think you did a great job, even with the extra added treats. ❤

      Thanks for sharing! I think a giant Costco pancake mix would last us forever haha We used to be a family of five and I’m still working at scaling back out shopping now that the kids are out of the nest. I saw so many things there that I used to just pick up automatically! It’s surprising how much less we eat just the two of us! Definitely toilet paper!

    I was at Costco 10 days ago. I don't go often as it's a 2-2.5 hour drive away. When I do shop there I also do many other errands in the city (I'm from a small rural town in Australia). I spent AUS$250 on groceries, or CAD$220. I generally but meats, plus gluten, dairy and peanut free foods as Costco has a greater variety and is far cheaper than in my town. I also met mum, who lives 15 minutes from Costco, and did 6 other things I can't do in my hometown.

I have an $80 a week budget for two adults so im just working it into the budget until it's gone. So like you, I'm trying to average 80 a week for the whole year so buying cheaper stuff at sams is worth it to me too.

    • @JessicaWanders

      I know right?! I’ll be dealing with that overspend at least through the next pay period! I feel like I at least stocked up on some things. $80 is pretty decent…sometimes it’s nice to buy big things but for the same amount of money I feel like I can get a bigger variety of things in smaller quantities at other stores but some of the cheap prices are hard to pass up!

    Hello! I hope you are enjoying March. Thinking about your math on the monthly budget: except for February, each month is more than four weeks. And this year February was more than four weeks! So, 52 weeks divided by 12 months is 4.3. $150 every two weeks then is more like $322 per month.

    • @JessicaWanders
      @JessicaWanders  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I went to BJ's (a warehouse store similar to Costco) with a friend who has a membership for the first time in years and had the same reaction - some good deals per unit price but you had to buy such big quantities up front! I had saved up for a few months so it had it's own budget separate from my regular grocery budget so the hit didn't feel as hard but I don't think it is something I will do often ... and I am very glad to have a friend who will take me rather than buy a membership.

    • @JessicaWanders
      @JessicaWanders  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, you do have to factor in the membership cost as well! I do know that their meat is cheaper and things like Tylenol and Advil are a great price but with the membership cost I could buy a lot of stuff somewhere else 🤔 I’ll try to make good use of it throughout the year and see if I think it was worth it at the end!

    Costco has the best price on certain things but I always buy too many things. never go to Costco with your husband…budget killer🤣. I usually buy bread, cream, cheese and Olive oil, coconut oil, nuts, parchment paper and the best deal for us is Almond butter. I thought your price for organic coconut milk at your Costco was pretty good. Gay Lea butter is my favourite butter! Except for Kerry gold Irish butter which I can no longer find and refuse to pay the $10+ price for 1/2 lb. Don’t feel bad for impulse buys, it happens! I figured out I am completely incapable of sticking to my list and always buy more than I intend to…. Always! Does your superstore not price match? I try to price match everything I possibly can especially produce. As well I signed DH up for his own pc optimum card and not link them so he gets his own offers and I keep a copy of his card(marked so I can tell) and decide which card to use for best point offers. I also found but didn’t buy the Pace salsa at dollar tree for $1.50. Smaller size though but sometimes I can’t get through the big jars! Great shop!

      @@JessicaWanders I thought so too but my kids actually were the ones that insisted it was the better place to go. I don’t fully agree because I find that No frills carries mostly smaller sized items so it’s great for families that don’t bulk buy - but after going in there a few times I am realizing that it is the in store specials that make the biggest difference. I think they clear out extra stock for superstore warehouses. Last week I got spring roll wrappers for 10c a package, pierogees for $2 a bag, and the recent shredded cheese deal was excellent - especially if you found the 1.25 coupon too. The fruit at Save On Foods in Vancouver was weird last week. I got those ambrosia apples delivered on that same $4.99 deal. One in the bottom of the bag was rotten to the point it was leaking in the bag. I put the rest of the bag in the crisper and the first one I ate was very crisp and fresh. Its going to be a situation I think where each apple you dont know what you are going to get. The bananas looked nice and yellow but when I tried to peel one it was breaking apart in chunks. I had to cut it off with a knife. The banana inside was gross. Thank god I only bought 2! They had that my offers deal for manadrins for $4.49. They are somewhat hard but at least edible enough and still easy to peel.

Often we would take two carts, I would head down the food side, he would head down the other and we would meet at the till. The "idea" was if one of us grabbed something and the other one didn't want it we would just put it back. Only we never put anything back, it was usually "oh cool - that's a great find". If we could have compromised like that all the time I'd probably still be married. 🤣🤣 Seriously though, you are conscientious and budget aware most of the time, you are allowed a Costco splurge!

      I was chatting with a couple in the store with a grossly overloaded cart heading to the till, looking exhausted, and they both said **in unison** that they only came in for milk 🤣 It’s how things go at Costco!! When we had the kids at home I regularly had $800 Costco shops. I still don’t know how they ate that much food!! LOL

      The first time I ever went to Costco I immediately recognized the danger as they were selling TRAILERS outside the entrance. I considered it “full disclosure”

    Raise your hand if you also watch these with a CAD to USD and a Gram to lb calculator!

      haha I try to do some of the work for you but sometimes it's so complicated! Mostly because we get prices in both forms! Probably because we trade so much back and forth between Canada and the US it's really common to see both here! I try to just always remember that 1kilogram is 2.2lbs and it helps me sort a fair amount out :D

    You've had a cat this whole time and never showed them?!

      I was wondering if someone would ask! Shh I give that to the crows as treats ;) Our last cat passed away a few years ago at 17 years old and we haven't decided to get another one yet...When our cat passed I started giving his left over kibble to the crows and they seemed to enjoy it! We feed the crows other things as well but also some cat food :P

    Well since you spent nothing in January and February you actually are under budget to my thinking. $300 a month for January, February and March is $900 - you’ve way under that!

      I was hoping to have January and February reduce my budget for the year… 😂 It’s not a huge deal, I’ll try and make up for it (maybe during the $21 a week grocery challenge 🤔 😂)
