  • Welcome to the June Garden Review of my BACKYARD GARDEN in Zone 6 in British Columbia, Canada! In this video I log some HARVESTS, check on local PRICES, and TALLY UP how much my harvests would cost to buy them from the stores! It was a chillier than normal June and some of my hot weather crops have been slow to get started but other crops have flourished! It looks like it's going to be WARMING UP soon. I hope you enjoy the video and are having a BOUNTIFUL GARDEN season!

      It's been so cool and rainy here in Northern BC. Everything is slowly growing. We're supposed to get some warmer weather this coming week thank goodness. We had a ton of rhubarb we picked so I made rhubarb custard pie for Fathers Day and then with the rest I made strawberry rhubarb fruit leather in our dehydrator. It turned out so yummy. I`m so jealous of your strawberries. So many and so beautiful. Our 23 year old son is still living at home and he wanted to take charge of the garden this year so he can learn some new skills. He built a beautiful planter out of wood and sticks. It turned out beautiful. It looks like a big wicker basket. lol

    Come to Northern California if you miss the hot weather. Next 10 days we will be having temps between 103 and 114. I just hope I can keep up with the watering. Nice harvest and everything from the garden tastes better than store bought. Can't wait to see next month.

      Well, I don't personally like hot weather LOL but we do need some sun for the garden! I've been watching the crazy heat wave!! It seems very early this year and then that hurricane in the Atlantic ocean seems early too! I agree, even if I don't call it organic it's worth it to grow it just for the amazingly better taste of everything!

    Been harvesting beans. Going to start another row of bush beans. The cucumbers are starting to flower and tomatoes are showing fruit. The sweet potatoes have exploded. Harvested white potatoes, radishes.

      Sounds awesome! I've been hesitant to put my beans in! I can't find inoculant easily anymore and it's been so wet that I figured they would just rot! We'll be putting some in this week though! I think I could harvest some small white potatoes soon! :D

    The heat took out my bokchoy and I think my leaf lettuce. Pulled the bokchoy, replanting more beets. Planting some radish. Reseeding my lettuce. Everything else is great. I just have to water almost every day because it’s dry here, we need rain. My flowers look wonderful this year. Taters have flowers. Cabbage and broccoli look great. Carrots and leeks growing well. Good garden year so far. We just need rain so I don’t have to water so much! 💚🧡❤️🩷💙🦋🦋🦋

      Good stuff! Maybe we can trade some rain for some of your heat (just a little bit though!) Yes, the carrots are looking great! Everything is pretty good actually except the tomatoes, peppers and squashes. Need some warm weather!

      @@JessicaWanders I’d be glad to share the heat if you share the cool and rain. Your garden does look good and the harvest was good too. For some reason my favorite part is when I can dig up the potatoes. Not sure why.

      Digging potatoes is Mr. Wanders favourite thing! He says it’s like a treasure hunt! It looks like the crop will be decent this year but you never can tell 🧐🤷‍♀️

    454 g is 1lb so if you multiply the 100g price by 4.54 that will give you the answer - easier to do it this way in your head if you need to do it at the grocery store. (I just use 4.5)

    • @JessicaWanders
      @JessicaWanders  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Interesting! I'll give that a try but I'm not sure that's easier math for me lol

    haha when you looked at the big strawberry I thought "beauty"...and 1 second later you said "beauty"... must be a Canadian thing, lmao.
    As for the organic thing...well who cares if you would be "certified" organic.. YOU know you aren't using chemicals and this whole thing is for you to know what you saved.. it's not like you are selling it (right? at least I think you're not, heh). So I'd say yes you should be comparing organic prices for sure!
    We decided to scale back this year to focus more on fishing. The last couple years have been a struggle with the sun so the garden hasn't done very well. We have also had a ton of rain and cooler weather this year, so I'm kind of glad I didn't try a whole bunch of sun loving plants. We just did potatoes (doing pretty well), beans (just started), tomatoes (struggling and sad), kale and swiss chard (kale doing great, chard not as well) and of course herbs some which are bolting already. So if I had tried as much as previous years I would be super stressed now. Pretty jealous of your garden though..haha. Looking forward to seeing how much you get this year!!

    • @JessicaWanders

      Too funny! lol I'm definitely NOT selling my produce but in terms of comparing prices it seems a bit unfair (who knows **shrug**) The rain has been endless! I haven't even put green beans in yet because they would just rot! Yes, tomatoes are struggling and peppers too :( I imagine it won't be our best year but it's fun to try. It's actually been downhill every year since 2018 (our best year ever at 1200lbs out of the garden!) Dying fruit trees, weird weather all taking its toll!

    Hi Jessica! If you don't chemically spray your produce you may want to cost compare to organic produce prices. That would be maybe a more fair comparison Thanks for your videos! I always think I'm going to weigh my produce like you and then as I'm standing by my gardens eating fresh peas, strawberries, etc. I think, guess Im not weighing again!

    • @JessicaWanders
      @JessicaWanders  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hehe! Mr. Wanders always gets a bit frustrated with me when I come running out and make him weigh things before he snacks on them but I'm sure that a few things escape the scales ;)

    My tiny garden is verrrrry neglected this year due to having a baby. 😛but I think I’m going to get some peppers eventually, there are some tiny ones starting to grow…tomatoes are way behind I’m not sure why. 🙁

    Jessica what do you spray on your fruit trees? I put in two apple trees this year!

    • @JessicaWanders
      @JessicaWanders  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hmmm I just pay people to spray them LOL It looks like last spray they were treating for coddling moth and they sprayed a product called "calypso" and some other thing called "thiacloprid" ?? The community that I live in used to all be orchards so everyone has fruit trees and it's almost rude not to spray because then your neighbour's trees could end up with the pests!

    Sorry. I don't have a garden. What does it mean to bolt?

    • @JessicaWanders
      @JessicaWanders  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Ahhh when the plant decides to flower and produce seeds it sends up a flower stalk (bolting to seed). Usually when that happens the quality of whichever vegetable it is can go down or it might taste more bitter.
