  • Traps aren't the only thing that you need when you get started trapping, there's a list of them including stakes, dye, lure, and a myriad of other things. The problem is that some places that sell traps sell only that, traps. That can get would be trappers off on the wrong foot if they purchase traps thinking that is all they will need. Hardware stores are a common culprit for this. The best place to get traps and trapping supplies is a trapping supply dealer. Not only will they have everything you need but they have good quality supplies as well. To learn more about trapping visit www.coyotetrappingschool.com.

    i use mongomery #3 for coyotes, have been for years except when they quit making them. onidea starting making them again and they are awesome. center swiveled, jaw tips turned up, thick jawed, and i got dogless. really like the info, been trapping for over 30 years and still love to learn new stuff.

      That's what makes trapping so fun to me, there is always something to learn. I messed around with some bridger dogless #2s this year. In GA we've got a jaw spread restriction and can't go larger than #2. Those #3s sound jam up though, I like a quality trap

    ya i agree mbs are the best trap by far. i use duke #2's and the work fine, but like you said the mbs are the better trap. but for people like me who are just a kid and can by 2 or 3 traps for the peice of a mb they work fine.

    The new trapper has a lot of gear to buy and a lot of learning to do, that 9 dollar duke is not the best coyote trap on the market. However, It is one of the most affordable, tunable, and versatile traps on the market.

    Another great educational video. Thanks for all you do to help trappers be better informed. Would it be possible to do a video where you show a trapper a basic starter set up with the different kinds of traps you would recommend and a cost breakdown?
    Then could you provide some options on expanding the set up as a trapper becomes more skilled and wants to move up, again with some cost estimates.
    Not everyone who starts trapping is going to be willing to invest $1,000, $2,000, or $5,000 to get a good variety and number of foot holds, conibears, dog proofs, snares, live traps, etc. of all the different types and sizes along with all the anchors, drags, tools, waders, baits, lures, bags, poke and catch poles, fleshing equipment, fur shed equipment, and so forth that a dedicated trapper would have.
    Could you show us what items you would purchase if you were starting out and had a budget of no more than $500 then tell us how you would expand it when you got your next $500 to spend? I bet a lot of people would love to see a video like that.

    Why in the world people are giving you so much crap about this video is beyond me. Your just trying to show people the difference in how a entry level trap compares to something built better. A lot of comments are pushing 1.5 coils for coyotes and arguing every point. 1.5 coils for coyotes is like taking a north american arms .22 mini revolver to a gunfight. Will it do the job, yes but your gambling quite a bit. People may be wanting to justify using a 1.5 on coyotes because that's what they use and they want to re-assure their decision. Here in the east, if you ran 1.5's on coyotes, your not going to hold very many. I don't care whether it's a Duke, Sleepy Creek, or Bridger. Might as well use a #11 longspring, you'd be better off and you'd hold a lot more. Out west where the coyotes are smaller, you might get away with it. If people want to use a 1.5 on coyotes, it better be laminated, baseplated, and 4 coiled with some stout music wires and the jaws bubble tipped. I have nothing against people who use 1.5's on coyotes, but to me it doesn't make sense when there are TONS of better choices. If your serious about catching and holding coyotes anyway. I have a couple Duke's, and they are a good trap for what little they cost. I run Sleepy Creek #3 longsprings with expanded pans and I run some fully modified Montana #3's and fully modified Montana #2's. Why is that, well for the money they are a LOT of trap. I'm more of a longspring guy simply because they can't be beat for holding power, in my opinion. Are their better traps, yep. I think the 550 is probably the best out of the box coyote trap on the market. You can take them out of the box, degrease 'em and wax 'em and put them right in the ground. Kris likes the 550, and for good reason. I like the concept of the 550 myself, but I like a little bigger trap. Just my preference. Like Kris has said before, you can catch stuff with cheap equipment but anyone serious about catching any game in the long run will benefit themselves if they buy better made equipment. He's not bashing Duke traps. He's just showing new comers what they can expect out of a common hardware/farm store trap and what they can find at a better price and selection of a trap supply dealer. People only hear what they want and they lash out when someone doesn't do stuff their way. Kris isn't at fault for that and it's dumb to bash the video because of how someone watching the video does things. Great video Kris

      Thanks DJ. You hit the nail on the head, sure you can catch a coyote with a 1.5 duke but there are alot better options out there. I'm just trying to give people new to trapping an idea of things to look for and why I like certain features. And I think overall there's more people learning than leaving negative comments so I'm gonna keep posting videos.

      I try to have my fellow trappers back when they get bashed or hated on. Your definitely helping a lot of people out. In the beginning, it is an information overload when you get started. So many methods and techniques and so many different ways to employ them from a lot of different people and their style of trapping. I'm the only trapper in my family, and I have to say that it was a struggle trying to get the basics down. The internet is a blessing and a curse as far as information. There's a ton of info out there on the internet to teach you how, when, where, and why when it comes to trapping and that's awesome. The bad thing with that, is that there are a lot of videos that are ridiculous from an educational point of view. A lot of mis-information out there. Your one of the channels that puts out real world experience and extremely valid information to help that new comer make that first catch, or the seasoned guy take their trapping to the next level to up their catch. I also like that you trap in the south/east. There's not a whole lot of info out there for the eastern/southern trapper. Again, I agree 110% with you on your opinions of coyote trapping. I watch for notifications that you made a new video. Gotta support ya man. Hope your wearing the fur out

    Duke traps are good for there price and with a little bit of Modifing they have plenty of good use..over the years I have quit using coil springs all together and went long spring on all of my trap lines. but duke coil Spring traps have always had plenty of holding power for me you just have to pick the right trap for what animal you are trapping you would not use a mb550 on grizzly bear would you.

And I've used plenty of traps, for a long time I used Victor 1 3/4 traps, and they caught and held alot of game, but I'm always looking for a more efficient method and MBs to me are more efficient.

      For strictly fox, a 1 1/2 or 450 size trap is fine. If there's a chance of catching coyotes, and nowadays most places there is, then you might bump up to a 1 3/4, 2, or 550. I catch plenty of foxes in MB550s without any problem

    I bought 1 Duke 1 1/2 to catch coyotes. 1 trap. With no dye, anchors, lures, or anything other than some basic bait. I caught 3 coyotes out of that set in one month. So you can't really say that a single cheap trap won't get you good catches, but it's also true that the better and more numerous your traps, the better you'll do in the long run.

    • @coyotetrappingschool1575
      @coyotetrappingschool1575  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's no doubt that you can catch game with cheap equipment, but you're right, in the long run a coyote is probably going to be more than that 1 1/2 can hold, whereas a sturdier trap will last longer. What did you use to stake your trap, you said you bought no anchors but you had to use something to hold it down, rebar?

    Duke 1 3/4 will hold a coyote just fine with plenty of paw in the pan. Never had a coyote pull out. I run them all the time. Ill fix whats broken when i stop catching. Mb550s are an excellent trap tho just to high of a price point to run them in numbers

    • @coyotetrappingschool1575
      @coyotetrappingschool1575  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nothing wrong with Duke's at all, my point is that by the time I night latch the pan, beef up the chain, and put real swivels on the trap I could have bought an MB550 and been trapping. I've got nothing against Duke's but there is a quality difference.

    • @midwestprepper3415
      @midwestprepper3415 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coyote Trapping School your right mb550 are a great quality trap.. everyone has their own personal preference when it comes to traps. But i look at things a little differently. I look at the simplest most effective way to get it done.. night latching and pan upgrades are not a necessity. Theyre a preference. So in your case i guess after upgrading all your traps its easier to just by something different. I dont nite latch or change pans or switch out chains or any of that. I run simple 1.75 dukes. Its easy, simple, cheap and most importantly gets the job done..

    • @coyotetrappingschool1575
      @coyotetrappingschool1575  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the most important thing, getting the job done! My first coyote I ever caught was in a stock #2 Duke. They've been around a long time and there's a reason for that. It is all preference and what you get used to. Ask 10 trappers the best trap and you'll get 10 different answers! Good luck this season

    • @coyotetrappingschool1575
      @coyotetrappingschool1575  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think the location of the swivel affects the animal pulling out, that's more a function of how well the animal is caught. But a center swiveled trap is less likely for the animal's foot to slide in the trap, which is easier on the animal, that's the point I wanted to get across with the center swivel.

      Arkansas Hunting & Outdoors I'm not bashing any traps. I've said before I caught my first coyote in a duke #2 and still use duke dog proof traps and 1 1/2 coilsprings. I appreciate getting the traps you can afford starting out. That's what I did and as I could afford them I bought better traps. For a lot of people time is more valuable than money. When I started I had plenty of time to tinker and adjust traps. Now with a family I don't want to spend a couple hours in the fur shed modifying traps when I can pay a little more and get traps that are ready to go. Everyone has their own preferences and considerations. Good luck out there!

    But i don't agree with the offset allowing blood flow to the foot. Offset or not, the animal has full contact of metal on the foot. I cant think of any land animal that has a paw or leg that is a 1/4" or smaller. We are required to use them on #2 sized traps or larger here in Nevada. I use them on all my traps just because I believe the offset allows for the levers to ride up a little higher, giving you more locking power and gives you a better hold. The offset just looks more humane to the non trapping communitee and is the reason some states require them. Haha its like the ribber jaw traps. Worse trap in the world when it comes to saving a paw. Works like a tourniquet. While the most humane trap is the "scariest" looking. Toothed traps are the only traps that allow blood flow and at the same time keeps the paw from twisting which prevents the jaws from cutting the skin. And for those who don't believe that, when they trapped wolves to reintroduce into Yellowstone the wolf advocates pushed for toothed traps to be used because they knew they were the best trap to insure there was no paw damage so the wolves could be released.

      That's the first time I've heard a state have a minimum size on land traps! Here we are NOT allowed to use bigger than a #2 trap on land. I've read several rabbit hole threads about the offsets allowing the levers to lock higher, took alot of thinking for me to comprehend what they were talking about. Like you said perception is reality to most folks and the offsets do look more "friendly" to the uneducated

      Yep, Nevada has no maximum trap size for land sets. I’ve never seen anyone set something bigger then a #4 dbls set. I’m sure some guys use their 7-1/2 spread beaver traps. I mainly use #2 and #3 for my bobcat sets but will be switching over to all 1.65s this next season. Easier to pack around and just as effective since they are all exposed trap sets.

      Those dukes will catch coyotes, but may take a little tweaking to get them primed. It boils down to time or money. You can make those traps work by putting some time into them or you can pay more for traps that are more ready to use.

      You don't have to buy MB traps, there are plenty of traps out there that will catch coyotes. Many of them will need a little tinkering to be most effective. Its just my opinion that MBs are some of the best traps on the market. If you're looking for a budget trap with minimal tinkering might take a look at the Bridger #2 dogless. I haven't tried them yet but they look like a good trap and the pan comes night latched, which in my opinion is a big plus.
