I have both MB550’s and a few of the new Duke 550 pros. The Duke is a copycat of the MB. Here are the main differences I have found: 1. Duke does not have crunch proof swivels 2. Duke has square pan (MB550 round) 3. Duke has significantly higher pan tension out of the box, like 5 pounds. I had to bend the Duke dogs to drop pan tension. I like the MB550’s better. Love the channel. Greenville, SC
My first purchase was the Duke 550's and purchased 4 instead of dropping a bunch of money in a product just starting into trapping then after your reply on another video of yours i purchased 5 MB 550's and I'll use both throughout the season and give you an update with my experience with using both brands. Appreciate another great video 🤝 Rock Hill, SC
Hey I just went ahead and ordered two of these and I wanted to say these guys reached out to me and called me directly to make sure the order was correct. These guys were really nice and personal. Just getting into this stuff thanks for the video
I run Bridger #2 - 4 coil traps here in Northern New York State. To me it is not cost effective to switch up at this stage of the game, I have approximately 75 traps lol!!! I have been using Bridger traps for approximately 25 years or so!!!!! Great content brother!!!
I really like your honesty and review. You were the first person I watched make a dirt hole set on here. I used your set up and I caught my first coyote within a few days.
I know this video is old now and I started with Dukes #4 and had great success, and they were 4 spring. But now the Duke 650 offset is a game changer in my opinion. If it grabs it, it is there.... period. But the Duke 650 is a hard trap to set if you don't have a lot of hand strength.
Like your video, looking to try my hand at trapping coyotes & Bobcats and learning about the different sets and traps. Like your information and on your equipment you use. More on the chains, shock spring and anchors please.
I agree 100% with your recommendation of the MB 550. I have mine set up just like yours (3 swivels and JC Conner heavy duty shock springs). And after being boiled and waxed they require no adjustments. I Trap coyote in Montana, and the general smaller size footprint in the ground of the MB 550, as compared to other high quality coyote traps (MB 650, K.O K-9X, Jake Coyote) they require less waxed dirt to set which is an important aspect. In Montana all your sets need to be ready for the next snow storm, even starting at the beginning of the season. Best of luck with your 2020 season.
I run both Duke 550’s and the MB 550’s. Both traps work great on coyotes. The MB 550’s are the better of the two, and require less tweaking. They also are a higher quality trap due to American steel and seem more rigid. Moving forward I plan to add more MB 550’s to my line. The couple dollars difference is worth the cost in my opinion. I’ve got a total of (26) 550 style traps between the two brands that I use in South Carolina.
I love the mb 550s I run 2 dozen of those and I have also become a big fan of the bridger dogless #2 offset and fully modified got a few I'm going to run this year and see how they really perform, great videos! Keep the content coming👍
@David-ye8rq I like them alot they sit in the ground well and for the most part they lay flat, inonly had to tweak a few of them, I caught 7 coyotes and a fisher this past season with the bridgers and 5 with the mb's, bridgers performed awesome although I will say I'm taking a file to a few when I do my trap prep for this coming season, had a few coyotes get cut up a good bit so I'm thinking there's an edge on them somewhere but other than that I'm going to continue using them and I'm going to try out the k9 extrem Jr's this season as well.
I started out with Duke #2 4-coiled also. I've used victors, bridger also, with that being said I now use MB 550RJ exclusively and at $214/dz your money is well spent! Great videos to buddy keep them coming....Palmetto Paw Patrol
I only saw this video because I came across an old coyote trap and wanted to find out more about it. That being said, you have a great screen presence and genuinely made me more interested in the subject. Great job man, keep it up
Great video! I love the Northwoods #3 offset jaw, it is a very sturdy trap that I personally have caught tons of coyotes in it has lots of the features that the MB traps have like extra thick baseplates, a night latch, thick jaws though not as thick as the MB 550) the only thing I don't like about it is the dog, I have to constantly bend the dog back into shape after one or two captures which is very annoying, that being said, I love the trap!
Thank you so much I have been getting in to trapping recently I’ve been using the live cage traps and now wanting bigger animals other than opossums raccoons and other smaller animals I got the duke #1 long spring trap for the animals to but that was vary informational and I will now be getting the MB 550 now.
Last year was my first year trapping & I started with the Duke 550 because they were cheaper then the MB 550. This year I’ll be running a dozen MB so we’ll see.
Along the same lines of expense , I went with the Bridger #3 modified. Is it a MB 550 clone, NO !! It is however a fair trap to start out with and will hold anything that gets in it.. I'm curious about the new Duke 550 and how it performs alongside a MB.. Do a video review on those if you get a chance. I'm interested in that.. Lastly I'm a tinkerer , so modifying a trap is fun.. I work on all my traps and as a retired guy , have the time to do so.. I've got more time than money at this point..
I got a couple duke #2 dog less to try this year and I run MB’s as well. Agree that dukes are a pain to set and you have to tinker with the dog to get it to set right
Ive never tried the 550s ,but I've have caught cougars in #2 dukes and they held together just find without modification, my favorite trap is the old Montgomery #3 step ins Have used about ever brand , but everybody bitching about Duke's but never have lost a coyote out of one!!!!
In Arkansas, Louisiana it’s your choice if you want a shock spring or not. I choose not to. 24inch rebar stake cross section. So two stake per trap. And some drags and I’m good to go.
Hey, seattleite here. The laws on coyote trapping here is pretty tough but if you have domestic animals you’re ok to hunt them. I have domesting animals (chickens) and the coyotes have gotten 3 of them and I’m ready to fight back! I like the traps you mentioned in the video and I think the mb 550 is the best option for me. As far as the rest of supplies go I have a few questions Do I use coyote urine or not? Do I use meat to bait the trap? If so, what kind? I assume chicken maybe Really like your channel! You’ve earned yourself a subscriber (:
I got 6 duke #2 with my first kit , then bought a few bridger dogless #2 and then i bought some MB-550, i still use them all but unless i got a good deal on the first two I'll never buy anything but the MB-550( unless they come out with a dogless 550). I can say what i like or hate about all 3 ,but out the pack the MB being ready to go and the quality of the trap is a easy choice for me. I can sayThe bridger dogless are the easiest to set of my traps though, just a easy motion cause the long pan basically being the dog. Hince why i waiting on the dogless MB-550 lol
Bridger number 3 Dogless offset Bridger 1 and 3/4 regular jaw and Bridger one and a half regular jaw all three are night latched I'm on the same page with you on the dukes they're aggravating and have to be adjusted next shipment of traps are order will be in the 550s thanks brother keep up the good work and hard work
I'm from Alabama by the way we can trap year round on coyote and a few more critters I don't have to have a license because I don't sell the fur or any part of the animal we don't have anywhere in the state we can sell the fur it has to go to another state
Bro from 1 trapper to another the Duke 550 is night latched , offset, cast jaws, bottom double plate, chain in the center of the trap, bigger pan than the MB 550. It’s the same as the MB 550 but made from duke. With bigger pan. It’s cheaper to.
I’d like to see a video of traps from end to end. I have mb550’s and the same anchors you use. Not real sure on how much length I want or should have from base plate to the anchor.
1’s are my go to muskrat and coon. And 1.5 are my go to fox traps. And of course the 1.75s from duke are my preferred bobcat trap and duke 550 as you guessed are what I use for coyote
Have you seen the duke #2 dogless or duke #2 square jaw. Center swiveled. Base plates. The dogless are night latched but the square jaw aren’t. Better quality chain.
MB550 awesome trap, best in my opinion, i also run some modified Bridger #3, ya do want to set the pan tension on the Bridger but there night latched from the factory. I run 4 coil, we got some big dogs in PA, but i can set them by hand but starting to just use my feet and you dont want to get cracked by them when bedding um lol it does hurt a bit. Trapping is just as much fun and challenging as hunting, maybe more so. Trying to get a yote to step on a 2 inch circle is just cool.
It’s not bad once you get used to it. Just dig the bed out a little deeper, place your spring down, put dirt on top of the spring and then set the trap as usual. Not hard at all!
It has been 25 or so years since the coyotte invaded N. eastern OHIo and A lesson learned is that the first thing is to use the biggest jaw-spread that is legal other particulers are A little more forgiving but you need A good above pad hold to begin with.
I'm new to this. I have 2 coyotes that run behind the house daily. I am wanting to buy the MB550 but there are a few to choose from. Which is best to be user friendly for a beginner? Thanks
I was trying to buy me some more too. But every company that I’ve looked at are out of stock. I’m not sure why it’s like that. Possibly due to covid, but I’m not sure
I run Bridger #2 4 coiled , and Duke #2 dogless that’s a new trap from Duke and they’re sweet center swiveled 4 coiled and heavy base plates and jaws. The Duke #2 and 13/4 are a much cheaper trap and they’re in need of a lot of work for someone who runs a line. Someone trapping a coyote or two in their backyard it would be fine for them. I also have 6 bridger #3 fully modified dogless. My beaver traps are bridger #5 and I really like them. I would like to have the mb 550 but I can’t afford them I’m going to try the Duke. 550 next season some I’ve heard really good things about them from guys on TH-cam and the only two trappers I know in nc they say they’re a clone of the mb550
I run a few mb 550's. I run more mb 650's cast jaws. I have some Bridger # 2 dogless 4 coil offset fully modified. I liking them more and more. I would run the Bridger #3 dogless . But cant over a 6 inside jaws spread. After duke came out with the #2 SQ dogless and dog on has been a good trap. Look at the dogless has a bigger factory pan.
@@CarolinaCoyote I hope you get the opportunity soon! 330s and bridger #5s work good. Find a property with a good creek. The beaver will eventually find it
I agree duke traps suck. But they did come out with a cast jaw trap which I have not seen in person. But I'm sure MB traps are still better. I do like Bridger #5 , 4 coil for beaver there night latch as well. But MB 550 is my go to cat and coyote trap MB 450 for fox ,Raccoon ,fisher, and the occasional coyote
@Royce Hall I would never order one till I had one in my hand. My experience with Dukes traps are that they suck. If any part is cheapen so it has to be modified at all the 2 dollar saving is meaningless.
I love them MB 550 bout all I run they a well made trap but like you said a little pricey. Got a couple of new Duke 550 Pro Series they stepped the game up on them they well made and a few bucks cheaper than the MB you ought to go check um out and tell us what you think of them👊🏻.
Your Duke's look like they dont have offset jaws legally required for land traps in NC. The traps are only around $10 so you get what you pay for. They do need a lot of work. Baseplated, nightlatched, jaw lams and 4 coiled they are equal to an MB. Actually a modified Duke may even have an advantage with the much more easily adjustable pan tension
Seeing as im on a super tight budget i dont have the funds to comfortably buy an mb550 trap. Luckily in my state west virginia the coyotes do not get super big like out west so i really dont think i need all that mass and size of the 550. I currently do have a few duke #3 traps that i modified. I pinched the jaw ears up a bit to make it harder to pry the jaws out because i heard that could be an issue, i welded a chain link to the bottom of the pan to center the pulling which was also a recommendation. The last thing they said to do was weld a bar on top of the jaws to add strength but like i said the coyotes here arent huge so i dont think they can bow out the trap. I plan on upgrading once i get better at trapping so the money doesnt feel like a waste.
MB 550 all the way.First time I actually held one in my hands I was amazed at how stout they are built. They are also made in America and Dukes are chines made. The country that brought us the coof.Pay the extra 5 bucks for quality traps and you will have 20 plus years of trapping with them.
I’m a 60 yo beginner and a new subscriber thanks for the video🇺🇸👍🏻 from Georgia USA
I have both MB550’s and a few of the new Duke 550 pros. The Duke is a copycat of the MB. Here are the main differences I have found: 1. Duke does not have crunch proof swivels 2. I like the MB550’s better.
Love the channel.

The mb is made in America
Went to pull a duke out of the ground and the swivel broke. Unlike your dukes mine had about 3/4 pound of tension
My first purchase was the Duke 550's and purchased 4 instead of dropping a bunch of money in a product just starting into trapping then after your reply on another video of yours i purchased 5 MB 550's and I'll use both throughout the season and give you an update with my experience with using both brands. I’m partial to the MBs, no doubt. But they both work! Thanks man, good luck!!!
Hey I just went ahead and ordered two of these and I wanted to say these guys reached out to me and called me directly to make sure the order was correct. These guys were really nice and personal. Just getting into this stuff thanks for the video

Heck yeah!! That’s what I like to hear! Congratulations!!
I bought a mb 550 off Facebook for $15. It works great! The first catch in there was a grey fox off of a coyote set!
10-4 man I’ll get to it

Very interesting!! Always wanted to trap in the snow. We get very little if any here in NC. Good luck this year!
I'm new to this brother, thanks for the tips!! Going with Duke 550 and see how they treat me. We have a major coyote problem.
I run both Duke 550’s and the MB 550’s. Both traps work great on coyotes. The MB 550’s are the better of the two, and require less tweaking. Yeah, sure, american steel makes a big difference. Lol
I use Duke 550s and really like them! Exactly the same as the MB but much cheaper in price!!
Thank you for all your great information. I'm going to start trapping this year.
Goodluck!!! If you have any questions just drop them in the comments!
I love the mb 550s I run 2 dozen of those and I have also become a big fan of the bridger dogless #2 offset and fully modified got a few I'm going to run this year and see how they really perform, great videos! Keep the content coming👍

Love the MB and duke 550 but the NO BS K9 extreme Jr's are an absolute tank I have 14 or the K9 extremes and they are a different animal entirely
I been using duke #2 4 coil os. They seem to catch lot more then the 1.75 and hold up much better. I might splurge for 2-6 550's this year
All I run is MB550s love the traps. I love the fact that all you need to do is degrease them and put them in the ground
Im a big fan of the Bridger 1 3/4. Fast trap and plenty of holding power
I only saw this video because I came across an old coyote trap and wanted to find out more about it. That being said, you have a great screen presence and genuinely made me more interested in the subject. Great job man, keep it up
Glad you enjoyed it! Hope you find as much passion in the sport as I do!

I use Montana #3 . Caught my first coyote in one the other day and they have a lot of the same features that the mb 550 s and bridger traps
I run duke 550 pro and the mb 450s and 550s have the 2 dozen of traps love them both
I got a couple duke #2 dog less to try this year and I run MB’s as well. Agree that dukes are a pain to set and you have to tinker with the dog to get it to set right

Yes, I use coyote urine. And yes, you can definitely use chicken meat! Throw some feathers around the area too!! Thank you for subscribing!
I caught quite a few coyotes back in the day with 1 1/2 victor coil spring.
I got 6 duke #2 with my first kit , then bought a few bridger dogless #2 and then i bought some MB-550, i still use them all but unless i got a good deal on the first two I'll never buy anything but the MB-550( unless they come out with a dogless 550). #3 bridger offset modified is a beast. I have 6 and really like them.
Also you can take a3/16 file and night latch them easily. 5/32 for #2 and below
I sold all my Duke leghold traps on e-bay and now only use MB and a few Bridger.
Im down in sc and ive always used mb 450s with offset. Has always worked for me
Bridger number 3 Dogless offset Bridger 1 and 3/4 regular jaw and Bridger one and a half regular jaw all three are night latched I'm on the same page with you on the dukes they're aggravating and have to be adjusted next shipment of traps are order will be in the 550s thanks brother keep up the good work and hard work
I'm from Alabama by the way we can trap year round on coyote and a few more critters I don't have to have a license because I don't sell the fur or any part of the animal we don't have anywhere in the state we can sell the fur it has to go to another state
Bro from 1 trapper to another the Duke 550 is night latched , offset, cast jaws, bottom double plate, chain in the center of the trap, bigger pan than the MB 550. It’s the same as the MB 550 but made from duke. With bigger pan. It’s cheaper to.
I bought a dozen of them and they're just as good as the MBs!!
I have a dozen as well. Switching to them completely this season.
I use Victor #3, #4 and #3N Double long springs offset, always had good luck
MB-650s my go to Trap, well worth it
I don't have any 550 but I have Duke and Victor #3 laminated and base plated all of them myself. It only takes a few min and saves a ton of money
GSP's are the best dogs I ever had. My boy is named Tater and he's full blast all the time. I thought I saw a GSP in your Bait and Lure video.
Yeah I have one as we’ll! He’s a liver color and his name is Scout. Best dog I’ve ever had, nice observation!
I’d like to see a video of traps from end to end. I have mb550’s and the same anchors you use. Not real sure on how much length I want or should have from base plate to the anchor.
You got it!
Swivel, 3 or 4 links of chain, swivel, then 12 to 18 inches of anchor cable or chain
Sleepy Creek 1.75s are a good solid all around trap, used them for muskrats on up to fox and raccoon.
1’s are my go to muskrat and coon. And 1.5 are my go to fox traps. And of course the 1.75s from duke are my preferred bobcat trap and duke 550 as you guessed are what I use for coyote
Love my Mb550s and also Bridger 2 and 3
I use Duke 650’s, NOBS Canine extreme , Bridger#3 and Jake traps. All hold yotes with ease
Have you seen the duke #2 dogless or duke #2 square jaw. Center swiveled. Base plates. The dogless are night latched but the square jaw aren’t. Better quality chain.
I run almost strictly double long springs now. #4 Bridger for coyote since sleepy creek is out of business.
I couldn’t agree more! I’d dare to say it’s much more challenging than hunting!
When using the shock spring are they harder to bed? Do you have to bury the spring?? Total newby here trying to learn. Thanks for any feedback I get
It’s not bad once you get used to it. Just dig the bed out a little deeper, place your spring down, put dirt on top of the spring and then set the trap as usual. Not hard at all!
Do some trapping around the farm, good information, thats, and nice hat by the way.
It has been 25 or so years since the coyotte invaded N. eastern OHIo and A lesson learned is that the first thing is to use the biggest jaw-spread that is legal other particulers are A little more forgiving but you need A good above pad hold to begin with.
I have mb 450,550 and 650s and Bridger number 2s the 450 is my favorite out of them all
Do you have a video with trap prep from brand new to ready to set in the field? Thanks!
I’ll definitely do that for you!
I use MB550s and Bridger #2 dogless. Both work great but I would prefer 550s
I'm new to this. I have 2 coyotes that run behind the house daily. I am wanting to buy the MB550 but there are a few to choose from. Which is best to be user friendly for a beginner? Thanks
MB 550, 2 coil, offset jaws. These are the best out of all that I use!
Do you have a video of how to set the traps in areas?
Also in nc we use Bridger number two laminated dogless...
I’m new to trapping but have talked with a few trappers and went with Bridger 1.75 & #2’s. Thanks for putting out all these videos.
Try #3 Bridger offset DOGLESS
How do you anchor the traps down? Just getting into trapping. Thanks
Fox hollow earth anchors
Sounds good thank you
I just picked up the Duke 650
Great videos boss, where can I find the mb550’s? I clicked on the link and they are out of stock.
I was trying to buy me some more too. But every company that I’ve looked at are out of stock. I’m not sure why it’s like that. Possibly due to covid, but I’m not sure
Are use in the MB 550 Minnesota brand they’re better than the dukes but a bit more pricey
I got some bridget 13/4, they're not bad but I like the mb550 much better
Duke #3 bru, but I'll give the MB550 a shot...
Yeah the Duke 550 is exactly the same thing as the MB 550!
Ya doin another trap giveaway?? I’m brand new and just gettin into trapping. Awesome channel man. Love the content.
I’ve been trapping for 3 years and mostly catch raccoon but I have caught a few possums, 1 skunk, and 1 fox.
Thank you
Bridger 1.65 dogless they are night latched and a beefy trap
Tried all the ones you have. And then some hands down best trap in my opinion bridger #2 dogless
Buddy I have a question. You ever thought about trapping beaver?
I’ve never tried and none of the properties that I trap on have any beavers. Always wanted to give it a try but the opportunity hasn’t came yet.
@@CarolinaCoyote I hope you get the opportunity soon! 330s and bridger #5s work good. Find a property with a good creek. The beaver will eventually find it
Instead of an earth anchor, is it fine if you just dig a stake down into the ground holding down the trap? Or is it too easy to pull it out?
Bridger #2 and 3 dogless . Base plate , center swiveled , offset , 2 or 4 coil .
Jaws lay flat to .
I have heard sleepy creek makes a good trap also
Thanks
I like to use the #2 because it is easier for me to set
Bridger #3 offset jaws
How do you remove the earth anchors when you want to move a trap? Looks like they're in pretty deep!
I’ve got a video about that on my channel. Check it out!!
The finned Super Stakes have a lug for an extraction cable. The regular Super Stakes you can weld a small nut on the back to add one.
The Duke #2 offset dogless 4 coil is a really nice trap. I did the same thing and took 2 of the coils off and it worked perfect.
I leave the four coils on
So what’s the deal with the night latch?? What is it and how does it work?
Good question! I’ll make a video on this for you!! Stay tuned
@@CarolinaCoyote one more question, how much tension do you set your pans at
I agree duke traps suck.
What size chain you run on your traps ?
I love them MB 550 bout all I run they a well made trap but like you said a little pricey. Got a couple of new Duke 550 Pro Series they stepped the game up on them they well made and a few bucks cheaper than the MB you ought to go check um out and tell us what you think of them👊🏻.
Buy American made not some Korean made
All these years and I never knew that the 1 and 3/4 was larger than a #2. Don't make since to me now lol
Duke number 3 is the best trap around
Looking to start trapping on our hunt property in Rockingham Co - good to see some NC trappers out there! Will be getting some MB550s.
I use those duke 1-1/2..for foxes
I like Bridger but the only thing is they aren’t night latched
There #5’s, 1.75’s, and 1.5’s are night latched.
DUKE 550 PRO offset is as good as the MB 550 and cheaper ! I use both Brands and they both deliver !
I bought 1 Duke 550 to try out. Pan tension was off scale high. Careful filing on the dog got it to 3.
Do you like Dog-less traps for coyotes
In Nova scotia we use 1 3/4 and 2 for fox and trash pandas but not coyote.
Love my mb550
I love the mb 550 and Duke 550 bought got gaps
Duke Pro 550 or 650 but yes Mb550 is the Cats meowww
I use old victor #2 with 2 coils
MB 550 all the way.First time I actually held one in my hands I was amazed at how stout they are built. They are also made in America and Dukes are chines made. The country that brought us the coof.Pay the extra 5 bucks for quality traps and you will have 20 plus years of trapping with them.
Duke is Korean
@@rognavolter number 2 duke was bent up by a big coon last season.MB 500 still holding up to a farm tractor running it over.😃
Do your research on where all the parts come from for the MB’S
I use the MB 550 and the Bridger # 2. I agree that the 550 are better traps but expensive. I'm in SC.
