I love how Fern shows no emotion during combat, just like Frieren. It works for so many reasons. Your enemy can't read you. It's so intimidating, like they don't care. Like the fight is beneath them. Lastly its genuine. She learned to be focused and calm during combat.
Well , Linnie saw Stark's fear in his face and did her best to intimidate him , it would've worked had he not prepared himself to die . Meanwhile Frieren probably taught Fern not to show any emotion in front of a demon because they can and will use them to their own advantage.
it makes sense, fern was traained by a demon hunter, frieren spent centuries developing ways to kill demons, hiding your emotions is rule n°1, as they know how to use this as a weapon
Best scene in the whole show. Stark underestimates himself and 100% expects to die. "I shouldn't have been so scared." The man is terrified but thanks to his master and training he gets back up. He believes if Linie joins Lügner, Fern will die so with the last of his strength he looks to take her down with him.
He doesn't even look and feel like it's the last of his strength. For me it looks like he finally realizes that he can take whatever she throws and at long last he fights like he should. Yes, he was wounded and felt like s**t afterwards, but I feel like he could do it stand and fight for the whole night if he had to.
Stark every time someone asks him to fight: "No, I'm weak and flimsy, I'd die fast and just be a burden while I'm alive." Stark literally every time he actually fights: "Holy fuck, you are a LOT weaker than I expected."
@@joshuaarnett762 I had a d&d character that was a little like that a telekinetic sword fighter that shot his magic swords out of portals and impaled his enemies.(not really d&d but pathfinder with 3rd party) Second fight against a giant crab he blew up the crab in 2 turns without any chance for it to respond and I decided I won't use that specific ability again
I think part of this fight, and how Stark was handling it, is that he's not used to killing demons at all, they look like people, he was only really shown fighting monsters before that. There's I think part of him that's fighting defensively because he wasn't resolved to kill Linie till she says she'll join Lugner against Fern. That face when he gets up doesn't seem terrified, it seems despondent. Had he gone on offense, I think he'd have instagibbed her at any point. Tough to just wreck someone who fights like your master does, he had to imagine splitting Eisen in twain which couldn't have been pleasant.
For those who don’t speak Japanese, Frieren used “hiki” to count the demons (when she said “one down”). In Japanese “hiki” is exclusively used to count animals, so basically to her demons are just animals that look like humans
Thank you, another bit of Frieren that adds more to the already abundant subtext of the story, wouldn't have known without you. Love this little detail, the spitefulness she feels towards the demon, even though she often doesn't feel any emotion at all, 100% suits the character.

Just noticed the axe simply falling makes a huge dent in the dirt. Plus Linie is a demon so even being small her attacks hit hard. "No weight" is a testament to how strong his master is and how strong Stark's body is. Its not that Lilie was "weak" its just that he was trained to be so much stronger (throwback to Fern vs Qual)
I do think there's something else to it - linie is a demon and therefore stronger than the average joe, sure, but she has none of the physical training that eisen or stark does. So "no weight" could also mean that she is legitimately weaker than eisen and stark, and most of the power is coming from the weight of her weapon as she swings it around.
I love how serious the anime and the manga take themselves. This is so refreshing to see. Even after criticizing Eisen, Stark is fully confident in his "I am still standing."
I absolutely love that when Stark does his anime 'yell the name of my attack!' move, his axe is already swung by the time he finishes speaking. I wish more anime did that, it seems way less goofy than when characters loudly announce their attack before they do it
I interpreted it as being faster than sound. He says it as he swings but its so fast he's already done before he can make a sound. As fast as lightning so to speak, literally
There is no weight behind her strikes, because she did not earn them, she did not suffer the training, the fear, the 'weight', she copied the style only, fantastic writing.
What makes Stark's fight so nice is that trading blows like he did is an actual thing warriors did when they were fighting someone as strong or stronger than themselves. It's super risky since an experienced fighter would recognize it but a fighter who just does as she sees likely wouldn't see it coming.

The best I can do tell you that the move itself is blanketed by a term for inviting your opponent to strike in which you'll counter it, it's called an initiation. I've seen historical fighting manuscripts mention it as well as in modern combat sports since broad combat tactics apply to all forms of fighting. combat sports, pvp video games, gun fights, war, the list goes on.

Stark was originally at a disadvantage because he only knew that she can mimic moves 100%, so he focused on defence because he assumed that the hits were also at the strength that they were copied from, but after realising that the attacks had no weight he was at the advantage because he did not have to fear being cut down instantly from being hit anymore.
There’s something I find extremely haunting of Linie’s demise, the face of shock and regret, her hand reaching out to the moon desperately clinging onto life, until her physical form dissipates into nothing.

Even if the fish is about to die the primal reflexive urge to survive will create an reaction. It's not a human level emotion.

The music complements the aniamtion so well here. Fern is like a mystic force with how much grace and skill she’s using. Starks has such confidence and power with his final triumphant strike

With the exception of a few comedic moments and moments where heightened emotions are to be expected everyone talks like real people and it's just so refreshing...
Linie dies reaching for the moon and Lugner dies looking at it. Linie was reaching for Lugner, and Lugner died because he looked back. I hope demons have more to them than the manga suggests...

I think Stark is smarter than rushing to a mutual KO. I think he intentionally went for a high attack so that Linnie had to swing that heavy weapon upwards. That plus her not having the same strength as his master the damage was small.
Earlier in the Lunger v. Fern fight he's dismissing her...but also missing the fact that she's dodging/countering his attacks almost before he's making them. Sure he may have more raw power AND fine control; but she's thinking 3 steps ahead of him.
I still think he should’ve literally split her in half down the middle, but my goat stark once again showing how strong he can really be when he learns to trust in himself
If Lugner knew humanity's ordinary defense magic, he could probably have stalled Fern out of mana As is, he was killed by a human wielding a demon's spell
So, Linie died because she wouldn't bother to finish Stark when he was down. And Lugner died because he was (slightly) shocked by her death. That is.... sad, to be honest.
Watch. This. Show. It's called Frieren Beyond Journey's End. Tbh they can be pretty soft with how they spare the characters from serious injury but that's my only complaint

Literary, when I check frame by frame, it's his high stance, and then his finished position below at the next frame, it's literary "lightning strike"
It was also what he was practicing at that chasm he made when Frieren and Fern come to recruit him

Linie is basically having maxed out copy skill but not having the stats to perfect the mimic, or worse, your opponent just has WAY more stats than you

Earlier in the Lunger v. Fern fight he's dismissing her...but also missing the fact that she's dodging/countering his attacks almost before he's making them. Sure he may have more raw power AND fine control; but she's thinking 3 steps ahead of him.
