    The montage of the 1000 years between Flamme's time and Himmel's is about 50 seconds, and the quick sequence of frames of her journey with Himmel is 0.5 seconds. The 1/100 ratio which refers to Frieren always saying the journey not being 1/100 of her life. The director visually shows us how Frieren perceives time

    14:17 Yes, the little spells that she learns help keep keep her love of magic alive. But also, when asked what drives her spell-collecting, she always says, "an idiot complemented the spells I collected." The little spells are her way of connecting with people. The reason Freiren seems so disconnected from others is because she spent almost a millennia in isolation by herself, an isolation that she was rescued from by Himmel (whom she probably & unknowingly loves).

      I just recently realized the Hero's Journey before this series was basically a story about how a single flower spell saved the world.
      Flamme's love of magic came from it, and she gave humanity magic. And then...spoilers for those not far enough in the series
      Himmel found Frieren through the flower spell as well when he was a child and later they met to save the world.
      I hope when she does finally get to Aureole, that she makes a field of Himmel's favorite flowers for him that she learned along the way and then I will cry like a bitch.

    9:00 a cool detail here about heiter is the amount of mana he has. If frieren is still limiting it to about 1/10 of her total, and heiter says she has 1/5 what he does, then that means he has around half of frierens total mana. At that point in the story, frieren is at least slightly over 900 years old, probably over 1000 already though. Since we don’t know how old she was when flamme found her. But if heiter is around mid 20s at that point, and he has half the mana as a 1000 year old elf, that just goes to show what a monster heiter actually was

    When Frieren first meets Fern she says she's very hard to find and practically invisible. And remarks that she is incredibly talented in mana control. Then in the training montage see draws a little circle on the ground around her. Also standing/sitting on still water. All probably ways of training mana suppression.

  • @Blackferret66

    I think this is why Frieren's favorite spell is the one to create flowers. When she trained with Flamme, she only learned how to fight using magic, so her love of spells diminished. When Flamme told her that the spell to make flowers was what made her love magic, Frieren wanted to learn it to regain that love herself. The spell to create a field of flowers is what made Frieren love magic again.

    Just realized this = Aura's estimate of 100 years of training isn't wrong as that is one tenth of a thousand years. Which is the exact ratio Flamme told Frieren to limit her outwardly displayed mana to.
    The magic control part comes in that if not done right, the appearance will shimmer or seem uneven to an outside observer = visible mana fluctuation. Frieren's magic control was so good that Aura couldn't tell that she was suppressing her mana. This also implies demons have experience detecting each other's mana suppression (if done poorly).

    I think the dishonesty in the scene where Flamme explains about concealing the mana is very under appreciated. Too many people dismiss it because it's about killing demons and it's the right think to do, but nobody thinks about how it ridicules all the effort and pride it took to get to the level of magic that Flamme achieved. Imagine working your whole life towards something, putting all your effort, passion and respect into it, just to use it in a dishonest way. I think it's why Flamme in the end regretted only teaching Frieren how to fight the demons. And why l Frieren loves and appreciates all the lesser spells like making tea or cleaning clothes. And why her favourite spell is about flowers. It's a way for her to use magic the way it was meant to be used when she first fell in love with it.

    I loved how this show is written so much. Like you watch the start of the show and you see all this love and praise go to the party who killed the demon king... but then you start to squint at it and you realize that Himmel the Hero is really the only household name. There are some statues of the whole group but there are way more statues of just Himmel and you run into people who knew Himmel or just know of Himmel and his legacy, but they don't even recognize Frieren or in some cases don't even know of her existence. (not all cases ofc but it is heavily weighted toward Himmel and even some toward Heiter in certain scenarios) The old lady in ep 2 talked so passionately about how HImmel saved her and then at the very end of that scene she goes oh yeah there was also an elven mage with him-- and then Frieren diverts the conversation and the scene cuts. Frieren was likely with Himmel when that woman was saved but the woman doesn't even recognize her at first. And when she starts to put two and two together on who Frieren is, Frieren cuts the convo short, avoiding acknowledgment. It is the first tiny lil instance that dominos into a growing string of instances of Frieren avoiding attention that all culminate into this crucial context reveal 8 episodes later explaining Frieren's behavior and why the world barely knows her despite her incredible deeds. It's so beautifully done I could talk about the writing of this story for as long as Frieren could live lol

    So, the scolding from last episode that Frieren explains she got from Himmel is due to what is explained a bit in this episode. Frieren lived in obscurity, she just existed, didn’t fight in wars, didn’t train at schools, didn’t do anything to make herself known. So, when she finally got to “fight” and use her abilities, she’s flashy and uncontrolled. That’s why the Demons say she’s always been flashy, Himmel scolded her because she was going too hard. Now, years later you see she’s refined, she’s controlled, it’s like a teenager with immense sport skill but ego and immaturity, vs a black belt master who’s methodical and reserved.

      + 10 years while being part of the hero party

      + 30 years after Himmel's death
      We know she got a looot stronger during the 10 years as she had lots of problems fighting Qual in a whole party.
      And around 100 years is a while even for Frieren.
      And not to forget: she spent a lot of time in the 50 years with Flamme honing her suppression skill. I think she had more time to actually become stronger later.

    A mountain of mana.... If frieren was in the lord of the ring there wouldn't have been a trilogy 😂 Gandalf and even sauron are kids playing magic next to her
    This episode makes frieren's age an even bigger mystery cause even 1000 years ago she already had more mana than a 500 year old demon when flame meets her, and that was after barely surviving a battle with a demon general so she already dipleated a lot of mana in her battle and still had the equivalent of aura.
    And if we also take into account her strange perception of time and spending multiple 100 of years in the Forrest with other elves like her who also don't bother to even count years..... God knows how old she really is, most likely over 2000 years.

    The reason the demon king ordered the genocide of the elves was actually explained in this episode.
    One's mana quantity depends on how long one has trained in their life. This leaves humans behind the demons. Elves however have insanely long lifespans, with Frieren having lived longer than most demons ever do - and she's still young. The elves were therefore the primary threat in a war between the demons and the races of mankind, so this was a first strike of sorts.

      @@tatsuyakamikawa4744not really.
      Frieren starts her training only showing a tenth but as we see she gets better. We also see her mana increases a lot over her 1000 years training.
      By the time she meets the heroes it's way less than a 10th she is showing. Heiter has five times what she shows but much less than half her actual manners.
      Not to say he wasn't very powerful and there is more to it than mana.

    • @modtec1209
      @modtec1209 11 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@101Mant the point is exactly that the amount of mana she "shows" has stayed more or less the same throughout time. This means that Auras' evaluation of a "mage that had 100 years or so of training" IS her suppressed state. We could therefore relatively safely assume, that that was also what Heiter saw when they first met. So therefore Heiter had the mana pool equivalent of a "regular" mage with 3-500 years of training at the age of 20-something. (not accounting for probable species differences in training effectiveness)
      Now the mana being shown as a cylinder throws me off a bit because of the way that cylindric volume is calculated, but if we are taking Aura as a benchmark, Flamme in HER early twenties had the mana of roughly a 500 year old Demon. This in turn means that Heiter was a (somehow) supremely gifted Human who had a significant percentage of Flammes mana capacity and she is held up as probably the strongest human mage in this worlds' recorded history.

    Literally, the only thing holding back demons is their pride in their magical abilities. They have so much pride in their mana that they assume everyone is the same as them, flaunting their mana to show how powerful they are but it's exactly because of that it's easier to catch them off guard. Hit them with a strong spell while they're not ready to defend themselves like Flamme or Frieren using their own magic against them.
    This happens in real life too because many people are so prideful that they underestimate others only to be taken down by those they underestimated.

    • @vick1873
      @vick1873 9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Flamme explained it - the demons literally cannot suppress their mana long term like Frieren does due to the way their society works. Just like even the humblest rich man would not subject himself to wearing rags and living in the slums for the rest of his life, a demon would not suppress their mana constantly if they wanted to survive amongst their peers.

  • @theodoretay4805

    Supressing one's mana is dishonourable to mages because it's an underhanded tactic to get an edge over another mage, especially since mages in the series holds pride on their magical prowess (especially demons). As I'm sure many others have said, Flamme's VA passed away in october. She voiced many great characters, but there's something equally sad, poetic and beautiful that her last job was voicing Flamme, with her last request for Frieren to plant flowers around her grave. that this is one of the last phrases she ever uttered on her job as a VA and that we got the chance to hear it barely a few weeks, when the episode aired, before her passing is simply amazing.
    Edit:
    And I just noticed something thanks to the flashbacks of Flamme and Frieren together thanks to you. And this is my tenth or eleventh time watching this anime through reactions or by my own. I'm dense AF.
    Flamme's time was literally the Old Age, she lived either in what would be Rome or in some Roman province, part of the Roman Empire, maybe Galia or Germania. Towards the middle or late empire age. The present though? Everything loks less refined, more rustic, just like in the Middle Ages.
    After all, there's a thousand years in-between both times.

  • @Arkayjiya
    @Arkayjiya 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +20

    A lot of people only consider the morality aspect and think "it's not unfair to deceive demons" which is correct, but there is a more important angle that you touch upon at the end: What Flamme's training in mana suppression and war magic has done to Frieren's psyche. When she started she openly loved magic, but her feelings dulled over the next 50 years. This is why Flamme talks about "making a mockery of magic".
    The love of magic is still there, as shown when Frieren gets excited for the flower spell even after her apathetic response, but it's buried under a training focused on learning suppression and spells purely for the sake of war and victory. That's why Flamme essentially says "we must be the only ones" she's probably not very proud of having pushed that on Frieren. More than anything, it's unfair to themselves.
    As an aside, if you thought "Frieren the Slayer" was her final form, you have now met "Frieren the gamer".

    • @HizuNagho
      @HizuNagho 11 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      Exactly this. One of the recurring themes in the show is magic being a metaphor for peoples' hopes and passions. Frieren essentially had those stripped away from her and instead must live her life burying those feelings. The show I think is as much about her journey to remember the hero's party but also in some ways to reconnect with the joy for life that she hasn't really felt in over 1000 years.

    Frieren not using her name to get her way around everything easily is simply because she does not want all that attention. The girl enjoys her peace, ALOT.
    Her sleeping all the time? She's a total slob, like, seriously. Probably because there's no one to look after her after Flamme's death, and the fact that she's basically honing her mana control for over 1000 years nonstop. Fern's the only reason she's up more frequently, or she'd be sleeping half a day everyday xD.
    I also love how Frieren constantly holds back when fighting demons this time compared to when she was still in the Hero's party, as stated in the previous ep where she'd used to be flashy with everything. You can tell how much Himmel's influence got to her. 1000 years after, and she still remembers getting scolded by him.

I think the magic users in this world regard this practice as being something like pretending to be a civilian or red cross to make someone lower their guard. If you can't trust that someone who appears to be weak or a non-combatant actually is, then you've got major incentive to wipe out every apparent weakling you encounter. If it was the normal practice it would be kind of terrible for everyone.

Like, yeah,, you as a demon is highly intelligent and specialized in magic but, besides empathy, lacks critical logic capabilities.

    We can see how much Frieren HATES demons, so she makes a point of killing them in the most humiliating/ironic was possible, usually with their own techniques.
    -With Qual she starts by basically telling him "You know that legendary killing magic you spent your entire existence developing? Well, thanks to me, humans now calling 'ordinary offensive magic' and this girl could cast it when she was six. Ya basic. Now I'm going to kill you with a supped up version I created especially to kill demons."
    -With Draht she's super dismissive "oh no...what ever will I do..." "Really? that was enough to make you feel special? Wow, modern demons are hopeless"
    Then she uses a cutting technique herself to cut off his hands and then specifically destroys his neck, like he tried to do.
    -And of course with Aura turning her spell against her and forcing "the Guillotine" to behead herself.
    For Frieren it's not enough to kill them she wants to BREAK them first.
