As a black American, the Alabama one was very impactful. Not to sound cheesy, but I probably wouldn’t be alive if the coastline wasn’t there. @@fkhan2006 The colorful sky is due to refraction from ice crystals, while the ground level haze is more the thickness of humid air sort of making a lens effect. It generally looks green due the scattering of the green color from the grass on the ground. Both are signs of extreme atmospheric instability in which tornadoes are much more likely to form somewhere in the area. Neither of them is a guarantee that one will form, but they are signs that the conditions are right for one.
I think it goes along the lines of: Cretacous Seashore -> water pushes minerals into the shore -> accumulation of good soil -> fertile land -> big plantations -> higher percentage of slaves -> freed slaves settle in the area -> high percentage of african american decendents -> african americans tend to vote democrats
The sewing machine graphic needs more angles for it to make sense, but basically, there is a little hook that grabs the top thread and loops it around the bottom thread by going in a circle around the entire length of bottom thread (but that is wound up to be really small and fit on the bobbin that is inside the round part)

Basically we have this one really nice fertile stripe of black soil running through the state (caused by those Cretaceous sediments) that became big time cotton plantation land in the 1830’s. What did cotton plantations have a lot of? Enslaved people. This meant that in antebellum times there were actually way more black enslaved folks that white people living in this area. After the Civil War, once the plantation system was no longer viable, the white folks left leaving a lot of now free black people behind. Those counties now have the highest black population in the state, in some cases well over 50%. In the US the vast majority of black (and just minorities generally) people vote Democratic. Alabama allows people to vote straight tickets (you check a box at the top of the ballot to select all the candidates of one party) and most people do. So that’s how soils influenced elections.

I don't want to get too political in a TH-cam comment section, but if anyone was wondering about how the costline affected election results, there a pretty good explanation. The coastline would likely bring good planting soil (or fertile soil seen in the 2nd map) which drew farmers, with their slaves to those areas. Since these areas were more populated earlier, when things grew, they became larger cities like we know them today. Larger cities are usually more likely to be Democratic, since many of city people's needs align with what the Democratic party offers, and rural people's with what the Republican party offers.
