And Cersei's death was poetic, as she stood where Tywin and Robert's band buried the Targaryen legacy with the dragon skulls then took housing on the very building Targaryen's built. Jaime always wanted to die with the woman she loved most, and he led Cersei to that place, where he got what he wanted and she got what she deserved.

It was fear that broke her!! (A post from Reddit)
The Mad Queen descent was rushed, but I've seen a lot of people all over the Internet make fun of the bells and at Daenerys' mind breaking at the point of surrender but it made sense and was set up earlier in the episode.
Season 1 to 7 showed up a Daenerys that rose from the very lowest of lows to the height of power. In Season 1 and 2, we see Daenerys realize that without power, no one will respect her or take her claim seriously. She’s told repeatedly that she’s nothing without an army, and she’s nothing without ships. She gains those. We cheer for her.
When Daenerys leaves Essos, she thinks she can rule through compassion and be loved by the people once she gets rid of Cersei. She had her armies. She had dragons. She had powerful allies in Westeros. She had the strongest claim to the throne and finally had the chance to take King’s Landing.
Season 7 and Season 8 was about losing that power. First, her powerful allies are stripped away one by one. Olenna, Elliria, Yara. Tyrion mismanages them as Hand of the Queen and makes horrible tactical mistakes.
In S08E01, Daenerys realizes she doesn’t have the love of the people. In Essos, she broke their chains and earned their devotion and became their Mysha. She freed them from their oppressive masters and they were grateful to her and made her their queen. In the North, Sansa and Jon had already broken their chains. They defeated Ramsay. Sansa and Jon, as Starks, have earned their loyalty for a lifetime. Daenerys is faced with a smallfolk - her subjects - that don’t love her. It’s a harsh realization for her.
In S08E02, she loses her claim. Jon tells her his true identity, and suddenly she’s not the only Targaryen in the world. Even moreso, Jon’s claim is stronger. He’s a natural leader. She’s immediately threatened by his confession, and is shaken by it.
In S08E03, she loses Jorah. He was there for her since the beginning. He was devoted to her not because of her power, not because of her dragons, but because he loved her. He never would’ve betrayed her and she trusted him fully. He’s essentially been her rock through all her hardship. And then he dies protecting her.
In S08E04, she loses her second child, and Missandei. One by one, everyone she held close that was devoted to her and her alone was taken from her. Her dragons were a symbol of her power; with only one left, she was beginning to get desperate. Her only advisor from Essos was Grey Worm, and he was a soldier.
In S08E05, she loses Varys, Tyrion, and Jon. Through betrayal, no less. Jon betrays her by telling Sansa, and Sansa tells Tyrion, who tells Varys. Varys openly conspires against her and (presumably) tries to poison her and turn Jon against her. She kills him without a trial, without asking for his last words, and without a second thought. At that point, she’s on the brink.
And Jon goes to her, and she seeks one last bit of comfort from him. She tells him that people love him, and that’s something she’ll never have.
”Far more people in Westeros love you than love me. I don’t have love here. I only have fear.”
He counters by saying that he loves her, and that she’ll always be his queen. But when they kiss, Daenerys realizes that he’ll never truly love her again. And so, she says: "Alright then. Let it be fear"
When the bells ring, Daenerys realizes that while the city has surrendered she’ll never be secure as queen as long as the people don’t truly, irrevocably fear her. She will never be loved by them. She has lost everything she has gained and every friend she’s made, and she’s completely alone. King’s Landing becomes a symbol of everything she’s ever been through - her brother selling her like a brood mare, Drogo's death, being ridiculed and laughed at from Pentos to Slaver's Bay to Mereen, being threatened at every turn, losing her dragons, losing her loved ones. She’s on her dragon, she’s alone, she feels powerless, and she’s angry.
So what does she do when feels powerless? She reminds them all that she is still powerful. The people will never love her, so they will fear her.

@@hijack69 Well it invokes fear among the rest of Kingdoms...Dany clearly stated that she has found no love in westeroes and she is only seen as a danger and a threat even after all the decisions and bloody sacrifices she had to make for them....Jon hesitating to show her Love was the final nail in the coffin...and when she stood there on the roof top upon her Dragon....Liberating the small folks of King's landing from Cersei also being the crux of it..who uses people has hostages as a Military Strength...All she could hear was Scream all across the Streets, Screams of Fear and Panic, begging Cersie to Ring the Bells...this is when she realises that she can never garner Love from them ...and she chooses the path of Fear with Fire and Blood...Making a statement to the rest of the realm. Now they know that she has the power to waste their Cities to dust within a day...As quoted by Robert Baratheon, the most realistic and intelligent Charecter when it came to War Strategies : "Do you think it's Honour that's keeping the peace? It's fear Ned, fear and blood!"
An example of Fear overpowering Honour in the world of Westeroes is The Northerners resisting to help Jon and Sansa when they call their banners to help retake Winterfell against Ramsey Bolton. They Refused the Call!

Dany`s advisors died like flies, also losing her 2nd dragon did not help at all. Betrayal all over the place, realizing your love has a better claim to the iron throne. Realizing the people of Westeros like Jon more than Dany. It all sums up, that not even the bells of surrender could stop her.

At first she was the breaker of chains because she empathized with them, having been almost a slave herself. But once she became Khaleesi and progressed, she freed people for their love and adolation. In Mereen, when she didn't receive that, she was confused and distraught, and eventually dumped it into Daario's hands. She doesn't LOVE people, she LOVES being loved and being held up. It's not about how they feel, it's how they make HER feel. That's where she got it wrong. And once she felt alone and unloved in Westeros, she lost all the love for them. The Unsullied and Dothraki are still her people, only because they follow her unquestioning.

A targareyn alone in the world..it's a terrible thing - Master Aemon Targaryen..
The deaths of her 2 dragons, Jorah and Missandei alongside with the sense of insecurity from Jon's, Tyrion's and Varys' end pushed her to the edge, which she took out on the Red Keep. Interestingly, her makeup in the scene with Tyrion almost resembles to that of the Mad King in the "Burn'em all" scene.

Why is it that everyone is so surprised that Daenerys was going to burn the city street by street? She's the daughter of the Mad fooking King? You really expected her to be merciful to the people who fear her? Those peasants were nothing like the slaves in Essos, where you can just kill their leaders and be treated like some destined savior. She's nothing but another tyrant to them. This isn't out of character for her, this is just her showing her true face.

I think you are watching different show.. Throughout whole show they are showing Danny is kind hearted.. Oly ther was a slight hint Tat she is capable of mad queen.. But Wt made her snap in this particular episode though.. Y kill everyone after evryone surrender.. y can't she kill from the start? Instead of decimating red keep first.. y killing ppl first.. I say its poor writing.. With no logic.. No one surprised abt she being mad queen. But not showing wt snapped her is just lazy writing..

Plus, Missandei was just a small part of a much more accumulative build. At this point in the story Dany is in the city that was ruled by her family until they were destroyed by Twyin's sack of the city, she's lost Jorah, Olenna, Ellaria, and Barristan, she doesn't trust Tyrion, Varys betrayed her, she feels Jon is betraying her, she lost 2 of her dragons for a country that doesn't appreciate her, all the people are celebrating Jon and not her, her Dothraki and Unsullied were decimated in the Battle of Winterfell, and she's completely rejected as a lover by Jon Snow. What does she have left? Grey Worm and Yara on the Iron Islands? She rages against a country that she feels owes her everything and has given her nothing.

  • @AriaIsara

I enjoyed your reaction and commentary. I'll rant a bit about the episode though:
The reason you guys don't understand why Daenerys killed all the civilians after she won the city is because... it actually makes no sense ☹ It was OOC despite what her haters say.
She was never developed as a mad character. She was developed as flawed human like basically every character in GOT (even Jon, who cut off Janos Slynt's head even though the man cried and begged). She has been inflexible about being respected and recognized as queen. She's been tough. But NEVER mad or cruel.
The fact that people mention killing the witch or the Qarth sorcerers or the slavers as if it foreshadowed nastiness is utter bullshit. She only ever killed murderers and people who attacked her. Then suddenly she is a mass murderer... AFTER her victory. The writers didn't set this up properly and that was on purpose, they wanted the shock value of seeing her turn bloodthirsty all of a sudden.
Other characters have done really harsh things (to put it mildly) like Sansa feeding Ramsay to his dogs and enjoying the spectacle... no one called her mad. Now let's imagine if Daenerys had done even to an evil character like Ramsay... all her haters would be screaming "proof she's mad!"...
Yes you're right after the bells she should have burnt the Keep maybe even the soldiers who surrendered. It would have been wrong but logical, it would have put her character in a morally greyer zone than before. She could have decided that she was ready to kill the civilians of the keep just to get to Cersei. That can still make sense with her character and what she went through recently. But having her burn the streets on the other side of the city makes no sense. It's manichean writing for the sake of shock value.
It saddens me to watch this episode again as it's really GOT dying and character development being thrown out of the window.
They butchered Jaime's character. They dared give him a line saying that he never really care for the people of KL. Fuck you D & D. They are literally retconning the character and his past. They are erasing the major bath scene in Harrenhal where he reveals he killed the Mad King to prevent the mass murder of the civilians in KL. It's like they didn't know what to do with his character anymore.
The writing is horrendous, there is no point excusing it anymore. Last week in the episode commentary the showrunners/writers said "Dany forgot about Euron's fleet that's why she got attacked". This is lazy, inconsistent writing. I can forgive it when it's only about technicalities in battles but I cannot forgive it when they ruin arcs and characters. It's now obvious they're unable to provide quality material without material from the books.

About Jaimie saying that he never cared about the people of KingsLanding : He said that because he didn't have any connection to the people. He saved them because it was the right thing to do.
Same with Tyrion, he saved the city but during his trial he said he would love to see them burn because he realised that they were mostly selfish hypocrites. However still he wouldn't kill them all for his Queen. He doesn't care for them but knows killing isn't the right thing to do.

LMAO just stop the double standards. You blame her for killing the witch who murdered her husband and baby but it's not different from Arya slitting the throat of Walder Frey yet no one had a problem with that.
*She only ever killed murderers and people who attacked her*
The Qarth sorcerers put her in chains, her maidservant stole her dragons for money and was ok with what the sorcerers planned yet somehow it was cruel of her to kill them 😂
The list goes on and on. People like you never blame Arya for COOKING TWO PEOPLE IN A PIE, you never blame Sansa for enjoying watching a man being eaten alive by his dogs, you never blame Ned for cutting the head of a poor guy running for his life just because it's "the law" so he blindly applies it (in the pilot), you never blame Robb for stupidly killing Lord Karstark, ETC ETC ETC.
Every character is flawed in GOT because they're humans and even the good guys have done some questionable things yet Daenerys haters only focus on her and act as if the "good guys" hadn't killed many people themselves.

    • @AriaIsara

You're trying to find a logical explanation to justify the shitty writing. Tyrion had been betrayed by his lover and was very angry when he made the speech. He didn't mean it. The writing is full of inconsistencies. The writers themselves justified the ambush in episode 4 by saying "Dany forgot about Euron's fleet". They're full of shit and cannot provide the depth Martin's material had. What they did with Jaime's character is just that: inconsistent characterization.

I've seen a lot of people saying they can't understand why Dany would do what she did but that's an impossible thing to grasp even in the real world. You can point to the things that have happened to her and they probably had some cause but ultimately it's exactly what is portrayed. Madness. Great review/discussion at the end guys. One of the better ones I've seen.

  • @Nostalgic90s765

Arya definitely has a strong moral code; she is certainly Ned Stark's daughter. She shunned her assassin training because she realized she couldn't kill people without a good reason. I think a lot of this episode and the battle of winterfell episode was for her to come full circle and realize what death and destruction truly is and for her to find out that she no longer wants to be consumed by it.
And I think the reason we don't see Dany's face after she starts the attack is to give viewers the sense of what it would be like to be on the receiving end of a bombing; the person doing it is faceless to you, just as you are to them from so high up. It's a dehumanizing experience.

Why do people struggle with why Dany burned the city, I mean its been foreshadowed since Season 1 and she literally said previously to Jon Snow its you or its fire and he declined her and so guess what happened. I mean its all there, please watch the episodes. Also she is a Targaryan and its a coin toss as to whether they are sane or insane and throughout the whole show people around her, people she loved or respected have guided her and stopped her worst excesses and one by one they have all been removed, all the supports that stopped her until finally the last one, Jon Snow was gone and noone was left to stop her. Its simple yet so many people are crying that it came out of nowhere, do these people actually watch the show?

Cersie and Jaime Lannister were my absolute favorite character. Anyone who sees her as a one toned evil bitch character has failed to understand her journey and character arc.
young girl with a haunting prophecy lorded over her head, mistreated by her father who played favourites and openly showed favouritism to her brother Jaime in their childhood just for being male, while shipping her off to an adulterous, drunk, women-bashing, lecherous, misogynistic asshole who treated her like shit. And like it or not, her act of incest, and her act of murder, were both acts of liberation that make her character empowered, not evil. In a society where women are objectified, bartered and traded like objects, she broke her marital vows with her adulterous husband, in a world where adulterous women were slut-shamed while adulterous men were praised, she broke her vows and chose her own partner whom she loved, in defiance of both social tradition and arbitrary sexual morality. She chose to have children with the man she loved rather than get pregnant by a man who treated her with condescension, entitlement and cruelty.
She fought ruthlessly to reach where she was instead of depending on the braver and Cleverer men around her like a certain blonde. She was evil, but you can see why she does what she does.
She isn’t a perfect character, or a flawless personality, and her schemes aren’t always perfectly devised, and her intentions aren’t always pure, but that’s what makes her character interesting, compelling and vibrant. People who hate her probably just have a lot of sexist issues with the notion of women in power. Especially one who did whatever it took to make the best out of the shit circumstances she was put in.
I am so glad how both these characters were written off. Together and in love.

    Is Arya the Azhor Ahai?
But many said it is Jon snow. But just looking at that *only* horse standing like it was just for her, made it look like she was the Azhor Ahai?!

Danny just broke, missandei died and her last words were dracarys I.e but this town to hell, grey worm was drooling for carnage, Varys betrayed her, people don’t love her. The one person I am pissed of with is John. John had a chance to end all this so many chances he could have taken the throne, he could have stopped ed her before that last kiss. Man John should accept his destiny to qual all this blood shed.

Varys was trying to poison Danerys. Pay attention to his conversation with his little birdy. He deserved it and more than that contributed one more step to pushing dany where she went.

And I also gotta say, as much as Dany has been shown to try to save women and children in the past, she has also had to be talked out of burning cities to the ground including all the women and children more than once before. All the people who have tried to talk her out of that are either dead or have betrayed her.

Those "innocent" people cheered when joffrey ordered Ned's head to be executed. Rioted at every chance they got and hurled garbage at Cersei during her walk of shame. I know not everyone was a jerk in King's landing but thats the thing, in politics and war there are citizens who pay collateral. Dany always said I will take what is mine by fire and blood. Last episode Cersei challenged Dany by killing her best friend and her dragon (child). Then took human shield and locked herself in the Red keep. When Dany saw the red keep when bells were tolling, it triggered all the past and recent wounds. She made it personal, to take revenge on everything that was taken from them. The red keep is a symbol of downfall of Targaryen dynasty. She remembers it all, she wasn't such a child when that happened.

Tyrion had to go to his queen and confess Varys's treason not because of his fealty to the her but because Varys made it clear during their last conversation that he was adamant on killing Dany to secure Jon's birth right ! I'm sure Tyrion knows deep down that Jon is a better ruler but according to him that doesn't mean that Dany has to die for it ! (but that's before she decided to go on her mad-queen-killing-spree I guess...)

AND YET, EPISODE 5 WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITES.I LOVED IT!!! Basically I stopped caring about most of the characters after 8x3 but there was one villian I had almost forgotten about and one I never expected to see getting their due... The inhabitants of King's Landing. Tyranny is made possible by the people and not otherwise. This is a hard truth and a harsh justice. Daenerys delivered it with tears in her eyes. A society that lets injustice rule is culpable for denying the Law. Thus when tyranny is permitted to go unpunished, the inbalance will fall upon the masses so the pit may still be fed its due. Then a voracious, predatory, indiscriminate Doom will be set loose upon an unsuspecting people in order to claim its rightful meal.
And after all was said and done, Arya rode off into the sunset. BRAVO GOT! I LOVED IT!!!
Or, to rephrase the same principle in slightly different terms
Every time a teardrop falls, a little flower grows,
otherwise there could be no beauty in this world at all.
    But whenever injustice goes unpunished
an innocent little flower will die
so that everyone has something worth crying about.

I felt Dany's storyline was a huge pendulum swing but in slow motion. Seven seasons in one direction of liberating people, crushing the wheel (ending slave nations, ending male dominated Dothraki culture), uniting people for a certain goal to get the iron throne and break the wheel. Yet, as the pendulum swing back, there was this goal of having Dany be the Mad Queen based on all the foreshadowing of coin flips, her father the Mad King. But it was so contrived how they did it. Dany had it all, she could have taken Kings landing easily with her full army, 3 dragons and Westerosi allies. Yet..... setback after setback losing her allies like Olenna, Sandnakes, and Yara. Then losing a dragon, then most of the Dothraki, unsullied, Jorah. Then another Dragon and Missandei. Meanwhile she noticed no one loved her. They talked about Jon. They showed Sansa hugging Theon. They showed Starks not warming up to Dany. Jon telling his secret becoming a threat to Dany's claim. Then her advisors Varys and Tyrion going against her. Finally the one last main person (other than Greyworm/army/last dragon) Jon who could have kept her sanity by saying something like he loved her, rather he said his Queen (and nothing above that). She said "Fear". The writers literally chipped away everything Dany cared for, her morals, her children, - made her fall in love only to take that, too and her goal of the iron throne to taken away by a bigger claim in Jon. Doesn't that seem contrived as a way to make it so Dany turns insane, depressed, mad that she just killed innocent people street by street. Push all of Dany's buttons to get this specific result.

I feel maybe dany will summon Sansa to kings landing.... And history will be repeated... Maybe she would want to burn her alive and either Jon will kill dany and join the nightswatch... Or Arya will kill dany and Jon might die in this fight as well. That would be a bitter sweet ending. But the only question is who would sit on the Iron Throne then.

  • @saikrish177
    @saikrish177 5 ปีที่แล้ว

C'mon! Arya was told that she would kill Green eyes too!
Cersei and Dany are Green eyed. With one possibly gone, *Arya* also after she saw all that massacre Dany did, *would kill Dany* with maybe Jon's face.
And Jon might retire to Castle Black as he wished from the start with *Sansa taking the throne* with Tyrion(her husband) being her hand and *Arya being the Lord of North* (she also said she couldn't be someone's Lady when proposed)
All this is bcz the writers said it would be a *bitter sweet ending*

I understand Daenerys' feeling. It is like that angel who saved the slaves from the Egyptian army and later on they betrayed that angel and worship other gods. The angel thought about destroying them all at the mountain, but Moses plead for their case and lead them out of the Mount Sinai.

There is also the part in the old testament where they traded God for a king in 1 Samuel 8: God promise them a king, but the king will enslave them and kill them for his sake. So maybe in Daenerys' mind it is better for them to die than to become a slave to a king. It is an act of "MERCY" for her.

Jaby and Achara, loved you guys like always. But I don't agree with you when you say that Daenerys hasn't been the Mad queen like before. You need to watch since Season 1 again. Daenerys is always someone who has a cold reaction to death, even to her brother's death, who was her only family. And Daenerys has always enjoyed burning people and watching them die with a smirk. We just never felt it was evil because she was killing people who happened to be bad. But now she's doing the same thing. Killing people because she thinks is justified. She has always maintained that killing people is justified for the greater good. She's always had this mad side to her. It's just being unleashed fully now. She's threatened to crucify and burn people before. She didn't even show any regret when she finds out that she burned Sam's parents. Daenerys was always meant to be the Mad Queen. She's worse than her father.. She did finally what he always wanted to do. Burn them all.
