Viserys is insecure about his place. I think he knows Rhaenys has the stronger claim. And even among Baelon's children, Daemon is the one that cuts the figure of Aegon the Conqueror. Plus the fact that he rides no dragon, and only once ever rode on Balerion when the dragon was ancient and dying. Daemon wants his brother's love and esteem. The scene where the hand of the king sends his daughter to the king definitely has a deeper meaning to it but it's also a fact that Alicent used to attend to the good King Jaehaerys when he was sickly and old to help him wash and dress and read to him.
Reading and attending to a senile old king with an heir and multiple children and grandchildren is not quite the same as "comforting" a relatively young king who has no sons. Otto was pimping Alicent out, or at least beginning to. There's not any other way to look at that scene.

So on the Inside The Episode feature the show runners said that even though Daemon is murderous bastard and an all around prick that he genuinely does love and care for his brother and his niece. Which I did see. Yeah he want the Iron Throne more than anything but I think deep down he doesn’t want it if it means the cost of his brothers life. Also as much as I disliked the cutting between the scenes of the tourney and the birthing I understand why they did that. Emma said that giving birth is a battle, and she was right.
I don't think he actually wants the throne tbh, he just enjoys the attention and the chaos he creates because he sees people for who they really are particularly Otto.

That birthing scene man. And knowing that women go through that today....sure there are things that can be taken to make sure women "don't feel a thing" but sometimes it doesn't work, so you feel everything. That look of absolute betrayal when she realized that she was going to be murdered....what sucks is she would've said yes if given the choice. But she didn't have a choice.

Daemon Targaryen is a LOT of things, but a bullshitter is not one of them. He thinks Viserys is weak because he won’t rule like the Conqueror did, with threats and fire, but that’s exactly why everyone fears Daemon because he would. Maegor was a horrible King, a horrible brother to Aenys and a horrible man in general, so the Council sees a lot of Maegor in Daemon’s thought process. So much had to happen to bring the Targaryens to Westeros with Daenys the Dreamer’s dream of the Doom, Aegon’s conquest all the way to Daenerys. Elissa Farman stole Dreamfyre’s eggs from Dragonstone, and those three eggs ended up with Dany at her wedding to Drogo. Viserys told Rhaenyra that a Targaryen, with their dragons, is the Realm’s only hope, and that’s exactly what happened.
Yes I agree on prince daemon a lot of people try to say he’s meager the cruel but daemon never once ever fought for the throne even in the books he never fought for his sole purpose he could have killed his brother and taken the throne he could have did a bunch of stuff but he didn’t he just feel like Targaryen should be loved and feared and he was that balance that is needed that is how the world is today leaders are they should be liked by their citizens and feared by their enemies. I don’t really get why viserys just went off what Hightower said 3 people like come on they can be lying or he can be lying the king shouldn’t just went off of that. I feel daemon would have been a great king and viserys is pretty much an average king to say.
that is ehy during the interview of Goerge R.R Martin of all Targaryen's, Deamon Targaryen "The Rogue Prince" is he's favorite character because Deamon is unpredictable
"Maegor was a horrible King, a horrible brother to Aenys" How do you figure he was a horrible brother? Aenys couldn't have stayed King for more than a few weeks without Maegor fighting (and winning) all his battles for him. They had a falling out when Maegor was Hand because Maegor took a 2nd wife.
@@kristi4113 No I don't, because they are not. The sickly King died young. Maegor was still in exile when Aenys died, so I'm not sure how it can be his fault from all the way in Pentos. Maaaybe Visenya did kill him, but Aenys was already sick so it hardly needed some grand conspiracy to explain his death. And even if Visenya did kill him, Maegor is not Visenya.
Oberyn's death, what Joffrey did to Ros, the entirety of the Red Wedding and all gruesomeness of Game of Thrones aside, I think Aemma's birthing scene is so effective and horrifying because of the intimacy of the moment. She is not in a trial by combat. She is not at war. And the man effectively killing her is the husband who loves her, but also the husband who bedded and got her pregnant at age 13 and who was so in want of a son he kept on getting her pregnant despite multiple miscarriages. The fact that she was not even told. That she died screaming and afraid. The fact that women, today, especially in developing countries, still literally risk their lives to get pregnant and give birth. It hits too close to home. It's too real.

If u don't know... let me tell u that the maester told viserys that he could either save his son or can't save both. So, what he did there, any father will do the same (I hope) who knows the bond between a child and a father, or at least experienced it. He didn't do that to save his "son", he did that to save at least one life, he did that to save his own child. In my case, if I chose my wife over my son... she and I both would never forgive myself for that decision, and that's the bonding parents have with their child.
I can see why you’d ask if Rhaeneyra and Alicent are just friends, but many girls are often very close like this, hugging, sitting closely together, bathing together, and alike, even if there’s no sexual or romantic tension at all. But I think there easily could be, also cause girls mature quicker than boys, but either have to wait long for the boys to be ready for the sexual stuff, to have the experience, or do it with boys quite a bit older than themself. 2 girls can easily just start exploring each other without any romantic feelings, just cause of their friendship, and cause it feels good, wish more people would seperate love, sex, and having children more, cause these 3 things don’t have to have anything to do with eachother at all, and it’s much healthier if they don’t.
For the record, Daemon wasn't just randomly getting the Gold Cloaks to butcher people, they almost certainly declared a curfew, anyone out after it is by virtue a criminal. All of the punishments they're doing are relatively historically accurate, for example cutting the hand off a thief. I should probably mention that Otto Hightower clearly has other motivations. Daemon mentions that he is the second son of the Hightowers, he is not the Lord Hightower, he has no holdings of his own. Everything that Otto gains he must seize for himself. He's successfully become hand of the king, but by sending his daughter to the king, he could become the grandfather of the future king, and will presumably remain as the hand, allowing him an insane degree of power. Short of somehow usurping the throne himself, that's the closest he's going to get to ruling. Originally Otto wanted Rhaenyra to become the queen should her mother not birth a male heir, this is because his daughter Alicent is incredibly close to her and could be used to sway her. Now that the current queen is dead he's attempting to install Alicent as queen, an even better outcome for him. Granted this is all speculation.
@@abadyr_ yeah from what other people have said the gold cloaks KNEW who the criminals were... but the king hadn't told them to do anything about the known criminals in the city and so Daemon was like "hey guys let's go fuck these known criminals up, please." Do you not remember Cersei and Jaime Lannister, in s01e01, boinking each other in the tower? Jaime then pushes Bran Stark out a window. Not bloody or gory, but violence against a child. Tyrion was also with Ros, but that was post-sex. GOT Kings Landing regularly had sex scenes in brothels, so seeing some in e01 didn’t surprise me too much. Daemon’s sex scene was supposed to be awkward, because he’s stressed/worried. He puts on a brave face, but he has emotions & thoughts that weigh on him. Stress triggered ED. Fun times. 😕
9.9/10 For me, but I'm a fanboy so take that how you will. If the show was Hodor and Groot having a conversation with the GoT music playing I'd still give it a solid 7/10. Lmao
So a few things The throne in the books in way bigger way more swords and is really towering, in the show esp GOT it was obviously reduced down for practical reason this throne is more accurate to how it is in the books, second Otto the hand is doing that as a power play he hates daemon and at present he is the heir and has the strongest claim. If he can get his daughter to seduce the king esp in this low and weaken state he can virtually become as powerful as the king and if they give birth to a son he will become the new heir eliminating the threat of daemon becoming king. Another point yes Daemon is this macho cheeky pushing the boundaries almost prideful and egotistical kind of guy he actually really cares about his brother and niece and you would see that. I think you should pay attention to the fact we never saw him say the quote because if you remember before it cut away he was very uncomfortable. With Alicent apparently in the chapters this show is based on she is older and she previously helped nurse the previous king, the one in the opening scene when he was dying which is added context to why her dad sent her in the books obviously his own reasons as well added to that(seduce, marry produce a new heir gain power and influence). This show is definitely one where you would need to rewatch it fully to get the full scope because there are even more players coming more twist and turns and time skips which will definitely disorientate you especially if you aren’t clued up like book readers so if you feel confused or lost it’s ok, just know it’s going to be really really incredible and exciting.

Good point about the prophecy of the Song of Ice and Fire essentially dying with the Mad King. I never even thought of that, had the succession continued traditionally without a rebellion maybe they would have been more prepared for the long night
Surprised so few people immediately see Otto Hightower is clearly a manipulative snake like Little Finger. He’s keeping the brothers apart, keeping himself close and is now lining his daughter up for the king. I expect the king to regret not having his brother close.

The Targaryens are famous for having incestuous relationships so the queen's stillbirths were most probably a result of that. I was so disturbed with that scene as well. She didn't even have a choice.

Rhaenyra is like Mary Tudor, she was the only daughter of her parents out of many stillborns and miscarriages and she was a woman. If she had been a man, she would have ruled uncontested. She even had a brother (Prince Henry) who lived for 40 days. Very similar to this.
I'm telling ya, I already fell in love with Daemon. I have a feeling he will steal the show. I love the first episode, and I'm sorry so glad we're back in Westeros.
Young Princess Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock) is 22yrs but looks 15yrs. Back in those days girls were women at 13yrs,he sent her comfort the king in hope he will take her and she get's pregnant. There will be a time jump cause Olivia Cooke is playing the older version of (Alicent) hand of the kings daughter. Older Rhaenyra is played by Emma D'Arcy, time jump could be 2nd or 3rd episode.
Interesting take regarding the princess's wishes. I think she absolutely has thought about the possibility of becoming queen. But she respected the views of her father (and the general customs) over these thoughts and accepted it as unrealistic dreams.
Rhaegar DID know about the prophecy. He just always assumed it spoke of him. I think at some point he realized it was about his offspring. Azor Ahai would be of his line, but then there's the whole 'The Dragon Has 3 Heads' thing...
Not necessarily, Rhaegar had a dream about the prince who was promised. He diddnt know about the winter or the others because of a family prophecy handed down. He knew about the prince because of the legends from the east and his dream led him to believe it pertained to him or his child. probably why he pursued a stark.
I still love the back and forth from the jousting and the child birth because the queen told Rhaenyra that childbirth is THIER battlefield, it's absolutely perfect. We watch every ounce of violence when it comes to fighting but childbirth we look away.
12:20 You're not going to believe it. But she's 22. Milly Alcock, who plays young Rhaenyra, is actually older than Emily Carey, who plays young Alicent.
It could be even though they are all part of one family that they are like the Starks, where they have split up and spent lots of time in different corners of the world and reunited with different dialects. They also might be doing some code-switching, where you talk one way at work, another way around your parents, another around family, another around friends, another way online, etc. I'm also reminded of Mark Twain saying about characters in his books all doing bad impersonation of each other's Southern accents but rather that they are different dialects of Southern accents, just like there are different ones in the West Coast, the Midwest and the East Coast. As Achara can attest, there is more than one "English accent" but various ones, Cockney, Royal, Received Pronunciation (RP, that news readers often use on the telly news programme), etc.
Jaby couldn't watch the birth of the baby scene lol😄. I watched it with my eyes wide open, afraid I missed something 😁. This first episode was good and hopefully it gets better 👍
How is that funny? I understand her completelyl Literally nothing to be proud of being able to watch it with wide eyes open. Understand that you dont wanna miss anything, I just feel like ur "lol" and ur emojies are out of place here. It was supposed to be a grusome and disturbing scene.
@@ankitdubey459 It was both horrifying and a good scene in general to show how women were treated. If you didn't find the scene slightly disturbing, u must be a psychopath. The point was to show how grusome that procedure was back in those days.
The way I look at it when it comes to the accents is not everyone lives in the same area. Paddy Considine is the most isolated being King. Daemon rarely spends time at court. He spends more time in the city as he's commander of the city watch and that night with the gold cloaks was their first night as the gold cloaks I believe. Where he's been elsewhere is the Vale. So all those areas would affect his accent different than his brothers. And as for all the lords. Everyone is from different lands so the different accents are all normal sounding to me. Also it's Milly Alcock not Emma D'Arcy, she comes in later in the season when the time jump happens. And I honestly wasn't really paying much attention to her sounding all that different from Paddy. And personally for me I kind of like when there's a wide a variety of accents with every character. So long as not like too wildly different. Like it would be weird if one brother was English and the other was Irish. But this show I think has casted it solidly well
“Are they all criminals” yes. Admittedly it’s a little hard to pick up on especially on the first watch where you’re trying to absorb all the information but he has round up all the known criminals and cut the hands off thieves, the balls off rapists and the heads of murderers
Re: comments about the dangers of child birth and the violence of jousting, etc. I totally agree. I do want to point out that the show is a fiction-fantasy so it is not historical (no dragons even in the early centuries in our world). HOWEVER, it is based or partly based on events during the medieval period in Europe making the child birth and jousting, etc. true of the time. More particularly, the time of the Plantagenets (Wars of the Roses).
Apparently in the book GRRM wrote, Rhaenyra was names heir to the Iron Throne at 8 years old. But the actress that plays her is Milly Alcock is 22, so she’s probably closer to 18 in the show. And there’s gonna be a time jump at some point so there’s an older version of the character too.
To be fair the first episode of GOT features 2 decapitations, an incestuous sex scene and the defenestration of a child. It's pretty violent. That said, expect the level of violence in this story to increase as it goes on. No spoilers, but early in season 2 you should get an event that will challenge the Red Wedding in terms of brutality.
Yeah, all the things you described feel very, very tame in comparison. I knew to expect violence but definitely went above anything I could have anticipated. In particular the birthing scene and the town scene with Daemon's soldiers.
Yo to be honest ,when I saw the Tournament of Lance for the first time ,I was like dude can you even see in that helm? I know that helmet or helm is to protect your face and all but what good a helm if you can't see in it? 😂
Being a guy who finished Fire and Blood, I am just gonna say y'all in for a friggin treat! The Alicent Hightower and Rhynaera story is mad crazy and can actually feed about 3-4 seasons easily.
Otto Hightower is like Littlefinger 2.0 - he wants power and will manipulate people, Daemon is like Tywin Lannister: cold and ruthless but honorable as well
Alicent will marry the King, and have two sons with him who will fight for the iron throne with Rhaenyra. And Rhaenyra going to marry her uncle Deamon.
I love your discussions! But for the record Daemon has always been GRRM’s favourite. This isn’t recency bias, he developed Daemon when preparing the background lore for A Song of Ice and Fire.
For the birthing scene I wish they would've told her what was happening. She could've decided to save her child. it is possible to deliver a breech baby vaginally. Theres always the risk of not being able to drop the head down but even the head can be delivered using different techniques positioning etc that would've given both a better chance at survival. Cutting someone open like that is essentially death and should've been something she could've have acquiesced to.
In fairness to him it wasnt an either or choice. It was both of them die or we can try to save the baby. Aemma was going to die either way because the baby was stuck (they could have knocked the poor lady out tho)
@@sree9121 Yet it plays to its themes regardless. Here there are no heroes. Only people. Where good men die and cunning men triumph. Where there is no black and white, only grey and ambition.

Btw the woman daemon brought to touch the dragon is his lover but she is more like his wife/gf that can’t be made it officially if I remember right he confides in her a lot in the early periods
Isn't Rhaenyra already 15 in the 1st episode? In the books, she was 8 when she was appointed heir. She wouldn't change much in 10-20 years if she starts at 15. Why hire two actresses while using the same actors for the male characters? Milly is 21 when this was filmed. I understand casting Emma because she does look like someone who had a few children while Milly looks too young. Paddy looks way older than being 28 as Viserys. In the books, he marries Alicent just a year later after Aemma died. Alicent was 18 at the time. Alicent is supposed to be 9 years older than Rhaenyra. I figure if Rhaenyra is 15 in Ep 1, Alicent could still be 18 or 24. I don't see it with the latter. Writers probably adjusted their ages for the show. Viserys is probably much older than 28. Then Alicent and Rhaenyra are much closer in age for the show. Most of my knowledge for this show comes from reading Wiki of Fire & Ice for each major character. Not from the books. I still like to keep myself clueless enough to be surprised from each episode. I'm starting to understand Daenerys getting killed off. We knew it wasn't going to end happily ever after with her nephew ruling by her side. It's Game of Thrones. Not a 90s Disney animated movie. Monarchy really does suck. Watch The Crown 👑. You get roles simply by birthright. Not because you actually qualify as a great ruler. Had Dany ruled, she basically has a nuclear weapon 🐲. It's like if Superman or Homelander wanted to rule our world. So I get it why Dany was killed off. Targs are just too powerful thanks to their dragons. I still didn't agree how it got there. She was kinda losing her mind before S8E5 (worst-rated GOT episode) but it still felt like she turned to evil too quickly without much explanation or build up. Still no excuses for bad writing and I was never a Dany fan. HOTD will end better thanks to original source being completed. Daemon Targaryen (AKA Rogue Prince) is going to be popular among the male viewers. He's GRRM's favorite. He's like a Gray Jedi or maybe worse than that. I hear in the books, they're all bad people. Even Rhaenyra. They're all ruthless and conniving. Don't be fooled by Olivia Cooke's good looks. Alicent is not a sweet character. So far, I like Daemon, Viserys, and Rhaenys. Mostly just Daemon. He's like a cowboy. Viserys seems like a good king. Hates conflict. The show's version doesn't seem like a pushover like in the books. Rhaenys ("The Queen Who Never Was") who narrates at the beginning seems like a strong female dragon rider and wise woman like Olenna Tyrell. I'll enjoy her more as the season progresses. I have no problem with a Black actor being cast as Lord Corlys, her husband. It is weird seeing blonde dreadlocks. But in GOT, many of the Black actors were pirates and sellsails like Salladhor Saan.
GOT always aged up the adults and children. Ned Stark was about 35 when he died in the books and Robb was 14/15 when he was waging war. Dany was 13 at the start of AGOT. For television purposes they aged up the kids to make the situations they have to go thru more palatable to the viewers and thusly have to make their parents older as well
A black valyrian makes no sense based on the discription of the people, it just looks super out of place, but i am getting used to it as the episode goes on
@@FuzzygamingRP same and I'm confused because didn't they want to keep the bloodline pure .... Idk plus they'll have kids that are half half so it's confusing

Daemon Targaryen aka the Rogue Prince was my favorite character from the book, and WOW !!! Matt Smith really hit it out of the park with his portrayal of the character. I knew Matt would do well base on what I saw in the trailers, but lord his acting of the character has been perfection in my eyes.
Can you explain what Daemon is like without spoiling much? From I can tell, he seems like a Targaryen equivalent to Jaime Lannister.

3:05 the Hollywood thing, no not really. They've just finally made the throne accurate to the books.
Well he's had many chances to have him killed so that speaks volumes.
I don't think he actually wants the throne tbh, he just enjoys the attention and the chaos he creates because he sees people for who they really are particularly Otto.
Daemon never wanted the Throne imo
What stuck out to me was that the tournament arena was shaped like a vulva.
i get Loki/ Prince Zuko vibes from Daemon. we might start off hating his character but as the series progresses, we might start rooting for him due to an arc change i feel.
There is a massive difference between middle age “science” and what we have today. Women do not experience barbarism like that today in hospitals. Know your facts.
@@billytessio6326 and you need reading comprehension. women can still feel an insane level of pain during child birth
@@tomasalarconchible9729 Additionally, not everywhere has hospitals. So, there are still places in the world where women do go through childbirth without any pain medication (also, those who are opposed). I don't know of any C-sections without much painkillers but I can imagine it's possible in places where medical equipment/hospitals don't exist.
@@billytessio6326 oh look - we have another man explaining the pains of child brith to a woman. Why dont you just sit this one out? Women to this day are consistently misdiagnosed, mistreated and misinformed regarding their condition or of prospective challenges during childbirth. The exact same version of barbarism may not be there but women are often put into surgeries when they’re not required, have their pain thresholds ignored and quite often have their needs completely superseded by those not actually involved in the operation of childbirth.
@@billytessio6326 Look into the rate of infant mortality and the rate of women (especially those in lower economic levels) dying in childbirth. Pregnancy is still one of the most dangerous times in a woman's life, even today.
"Maegor was a horrible King, a horrible brother to Aenys"
How do you figure he was a horrible brother? Aenys couldn't have stayed King for more than a few weeks without Maegor fighting (and winning) all his battles for him. They had a falling out when Maegor was Hand because Maegor took a 2nd wife.
@@awesimo4684 You do know that Maegor and Visenya are the REASON Aenys died, right?

It wouldn't be Westeros without a "We don't need to see this" moment. 😂
True
or several
The council said it was a roundup of criminals
@@abadyr_ yeah from what other people have said the gold cloaks KNEW who the criminals were... but the king hadn't told them to do anything about the known criminals in the city and so Daemon was like "hey guys let's go fuck these known criminals up, please." That Dracarys gave me chills whole over my body.

Jabys smirk at the end lol
Interesting take regarding the princess's wishes. I think she absolutely has thought about the possibility of becoming queen. But she respected the views of her father (and the general customs) over these thoughts and accepted it as unrealistic dreams.
When the king was discussing Aegon's dream, he had his hand on the dagger, that Arya killed the night king with.

But this show I think has casted it solidly well
Not gonna lie.
It's when Alicent picks at her fingers I have to look away. And only then.

Same thoughts
@@lgt_jne yeah they did, but most of the other casting is brilliant so im looking to look over it, ser christian cole is amazing cast in my opinion
14:17 A Feast for Crows.
Hightower is a high tower of sh**!
Why did 1st born Hightower in the tornament? That dude should have been at home getting babies. That tornament was violent.
It's a bit funny that so many reactors say something like "back in those days" :) Of course it takes stuff from our past - but it's still a fantasy story, folks. Just shows how into it the fans are.
The iron throne looks more like the throne from the books
I can't say that I enjoyed this episode, but this feels like a good Show :)
Just a quick reminder to u guys
Daemon isn't the bad guy of this story
I've noticed you guys calling him out
He has no interest in the throne
He is pretty much the Tyrion Lannister with agresion
Wow, pro intro pitch.
Winter is comming.
She's 22!
Without spoiling, keep an eye out on hightower and the daemon. Y'all will love them 😏. Otto is one of my favorites
thanks for "spoiling" without spoiling
The iron throne in this show is closer to the iron throne described in the books. Game of thrones not so much. Also the king didn't really have a choice. Either mom and baby both die or mom dies and baby lives. Its not like that's what he wanted
