KISS in Australia 1976 - the tour that never was!

  • As early as November 1975 there were plans in work to bring KISS downunder on tour for the first time.
In 1976 it came very close to be as 'Destroyer' was a Top 10 hit there - so close that their record label flew over a representative to New York to conduct a lengthy audio interview with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, to be used for promotion for the upcoming tour.
In this video we will examine why that 1976 tour never happened, and for the first time you will be able to hear that entire unedited in-depth interview (apparently an edited version was broadcast on Australian radion in the fall of 1976).
This video is Part 1 of 2, Part 2 is available here:

The interview was conducted by Greg Evans for 3XY . A heavily edited version was brodcast in June 1976 on both 3XY and 2SM . A Melbourne KISS collector just recently sold Greg's original cassette tapes of this interview .

@@bang-a-gonzo It's been well circulated since the 1980s Has made an appearance on a few YT channels over the years but may have been taken down recently by someone who claims to be god's gift to kiss archivists . I'll see if I can find my cassette copy and put it up .

Wow very interesting! I can't remember where and when I read it, but it was a fairly recent interview Paul did in Australia where he stated they were always informed of how big they were down here in the mid-70's but they didn't really care enough to make a tour happen until the "KISSteria" hit in '79. I had no idea promoters were trying to get them over as early as '76.

They might now even have been aware at the time, this is something the booking agent handles on their behalf. If their required guarantees for shows weren't met, there really isn't reason to take it to the band....

Wow what a revelation. A funny engaging interview too. This is amazing, how did you get that interview tape!
A 1976 tour in Australia would of been great, but their stage show was massive, and hard rock bands like Sweet, Skyhooks and AC/DC were bigger in Australia.
But by 1979/1980 they were massive in Australia, and USA they started to ebb in popularity, probably from over exposure from the solo albums.
Astor records were too small and Countdown were more interested in Abba, and Alberts acts like Ac/dc and TMG in 1976.
Kiss were known and Destroyer had cracked the Top 20 albums in 1976 in Australia, but definately weren't superstars at that point.
The extra 4 years seemed a long time, but the momentum was palpable and "Dynasty" was massive, and 'Unmasked" was big. Countdown and AM stations 4IP in Brisbane and sister station 2SM just put everything they could behind them.
Only The Beatles, the 1977 Abba tour in Australia matched the phenomenon of KIss before and after.
BOWIE in 1978, Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits, Pink and Taylor Swift had bigger tours, but nothing like Kiss hysteria matched any band before or after except the Beatles.

Great interview. On Coundown back in the 70's, they said how KISS was supposed to tour Australia in 76 but there wasn't enough fans. Kevin Jacobsen said ( on the Don Lane show ) how he nearly got them to tour in 1978.

Yes, this is exactly as explained in the video. It must have been very close to a deal in 1976 because it was published in quite a few places.

Yes, but I'd thought I'd mention the countdown episode that was in either 79 or 80. That wasn't mentioned in this video though.👍

I believe it was Greg Evans who did the interview and it was in fact broadcast on 3XY at the time. I taped it onto reel to reel and may even still have it somewhere. My friends and I loved it because it introduced us to their wit and sense of humour. But great to he a r it again thank you. :)

Live in Aus and had No Idea. They were booked by a promotor in 89/90 but the band didn't even know. I have the tickets somewhere. Bc I foud Kiss in 78 through seeing Alive II. I was 7. So they came in 79/80 and we were poor so couldn't go. I haven't watched much but thanks. I'd always wondered how well they did out here, before Dynasty so getting the chart figures for bloody Destroyer, well no wonder if was likened to Beatlemania. Aus hadn't seen so many screaming obsessed teens across the land and of course Kissmania was the cry. I remember being very poor and every day they were on the front of every newspaper with posters. Somehow I managed all 4 prob bc dad bought the paper for the gambling. But We loved Eric. It's bullshit they couldn't sell a new character. They lost their American audience in 18months while they grazed on more lucrative ground. Anyway I'm gonna shut up and watch but thanks. Peace

I vaguely remember this booking in 1989. It was for some random festival somewhere on the east coast outside of the city or something.
What I remember was the festival was completely out of their genre, like country and western or Blues. Something like that.

    • @bang-a-gonzo
      @bang-a-gonzo  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Interesting! Sometimes booking agents get ahead of themselves and pull the trigger on advertising before a show is finally confirmed - guess that is what happened here - if it wasn't outright fraud.

Yeah it was HITS TOUR. All they announced was Kiss and Divinyls but Ur prob right about the festival bc it was going to be in Wallan. Picture 1.5 hrs of driving with nothing but grazing pasture and small towns off the freeway. THAT WAS WALLAN. In fact Kisstard moment. We got to the sign one day bowed and did the we're not worthy aaaaand they didn't show up. Lmfao. So yeah I Was a fan. Still am up to and including Half of Animalize. Paul continued to write fiery songs. I heard Fight He'll to Hold You couple wks ago and went shit Paul was pretty on point. Peace

Nah it was some greedy promoter who thought ticket sales would entice them, I guess. I'm sure we got refunds but. .....hmmmm. actually can't remember. I used to be in touch with a guy who had a contact in Kiss and I called him Lol every day. Just begging. Wats the hap. Ha. Kiss brought a devotion from people. Even as we branched into diff music All my muso mates had respect. Cheers. I ramble.ha
