Based on the novel by Susan Isaacs (which I read), this movie was much better than I thought it would be for a 1992 film. It was compelling and romantic with great performances all around. Douglas was devilishly handsome, and the cinematography and special effects including colorizing actual German footage along with rendition of chilling humongous trains pulling in and out of the countries, complete with their screeching, smokestacks and steam, transported the viewer to the frightening experiences of that time. The movie plot changed the book plot a bit, for example the German friend of the protagonist was not a spy but a chef in the book. The negative reviews by critics contrasted against the positive reviews by the average viewer shows how out of touch critics are with the typical audience; Romance, suspense, a little humor, good cinematography and a happy ending is what audiences want.

Yeah, that’s sad. Some people are too sheltered.
Well considering that remembering the Shoah didn't take off until the late 1970s, it makes sense Melanie Griffith wouldn't have known. Believe it or not, the Holocaust wasn't mandatory teaching in US schools until the 1990s with Illinois being the first state in 1989.

@@Triggrrr For some reason I'm reminded of the Winds of War and whatever the second series was called. It's common enough to consider movies above TV series but even with the cheese in Winds of War this movie just loads the cheese on with a shovel. How anyone sober can write lines like that is beyond me. You gotta wonder how many takes it took for them to get the scenes done without everybody on set howling with laughter. The first couple of days were probably rough.
This is a great movie!!! Maybe it is my 6 year old self talking but I loved this movie as a kid....give it a shot and I think you will like it. The trailer is not the best

Good war film, the last hour was very exciting. But Wolf Kahler had too short a role in this film.
Something that I don;t understand, it is never explained why at the end if Margret Von Ebesrtien was working for the Gestapo all along how come Sunflower character (Sir John Gilgud) is seen free driving around Ed & Linda after she was shot, Margret knew that he was the main contact of a spy ring in Berlin. He mentions that he was interrogated by th Gestapo but was not detained. She also knew about the fishmonger smuggling information out of Germany, a little odd that all of these facts were overlooked by SS.
Because it is actually a bad movie with numerous plot holes.

The book this movie was based on was much better, the characters came of as more competent in the book.
At least the lady got some training before being sent to germany, in the movie, the dummy almost got caught IN HER FIRST DAY!

Griffith is such a weak actress.
Shining Through was viciously murdered by critics and audiences for a subpar screenplay, terrible performances, amateurish direction and unintentionally hilarious moments.
It also sweeped at the 1992 Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies) with 3 “wins”: Worst Picture, Worst Director for David Seltzer and Worst Actress for Melanie Griffith.
It was also nominated for 2 more, but didn’t win: Worst Actor for Michael Douglas (lost against Sly Stallone for Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot) and Worst Screenplay (lost against the aforementioned movie)
