I have been using the M1 iPad Pro as my only personal computer since 2021 and I love it. I am also very excited about the M3 iPad Pro launching next year. It would be great if Apple allows you to upgrade RAM on the iPad Pro next year as I believe that, that would be an area that will benefit most users.
Fun fact: Did you know that you can AirDrop with cables? Just connect an iPhone/iPad with another iPhone/iPad using a USB-C cable (or a USB-C to Lightning cable) and transfer files normally. This works between Macs, too.
The fact he uses external keyboard and external monitor seems to go against iPad as touch device, it may work but looks like a lot of extra work. Stand-alone iPad is best for me with occasional keyboard use but it does show how versatile the iPad can be if you work at it.
Good video. I have been an iPad only guy for the past 4 years and won’t go back. Project Manager in Construction and there are just too many things that an iPad can do, that a MacBook cannot do (FOR ME). Sure hope they keep improving the external monitor support as it is still super flaky and full of bugs.
I have the iPad Pro 6 12.9 with the M2 chip and think this thing is more than powerful enough to be able to dual boot iOS/MacOS. In all honesty i’m not 100% sure why Apple hasn’t done something similar to Chrome and allowed the installation and usage of iOS applications on MacOS anyway 🤷🏻♂️
Interesting take on the iPad (Pro). Not for me for the next years (until retirement), but in the long run? I'd love to switch to the iPad for my needs. And it has come a long way since the original iPad (that I had, and the one or other model since then, including the first, large iPad Pro, which wasn't "Pro" at all). My iPad Air (Gen. 4) sadly doesn't support Stage Manager, would love to experiment with it.
1) Do you need to use thunderbolt to connect to a monitor or can you just use USB-C? 2) Does the monitor need to have a thunderbolt connection to make this work? I know I basically asked the same question 2 different ways, but wasn’t sure how to ask. Great job with your videos!!!!
🐬 Great video! I believe that we are getting close to the iPad beginning to take shape as a next generation device. I am willing to bet that 2024 is going to be big pivot toward that trend. iPad has been low key gaining momentum with the pro apps. Its just a matter of time. I personally use both iPad and Mac. I prefer my iPad, yet there are still a few items that keep my use case from getting to 100%.

I agree for some people an iPad Pro will fully support their workflows, especially with regards to media content creation, but for me my M1 iPad Pro with never be a computer all the time its restricted to Apple's app store wall garden. It basically becomes an oversized iPhone, wasting the device' full performance potential. I hope more countries / trading blocs such as the EU, force Apple to allow side loading of apps on their iOS / iPad OS devices and put an end to Apple's restrictive practices. I am looking forward to replacing my iPad Pro in 2024 with a Microsoft Surface Pro or similar device equipped with Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X Elite processor. This will finally give me a tablet computer that satisfies my workflow needs. Windows 11 arm may not be perfect, but having used daily for the past 12 months, it is a quantum leap improvement over iPad OS.
A question I have is: what are the advantages of this setup? A base iPad Pro 12.9 is more expensive than a base MacBook Air M2. I understand iPads for artists and others who get a lot of utility from the Apple Pencil, and of course as an iPad owner myself I understand the utility as a companion device or for light web browsing, reading and entertainment. But you appear to be using this basically as a desktop computer. Why would you spend more money on an undoubtedly more limited setup? This is not an attack or anything I am just genuinely curious what you feel this setup gives you that the MacBook you mentioned does not.
It's simple: he just decided to create his content on this topic. That's his thing. It's fine for creating content, albeit often repetitive content, but it's not fine for many regular users who aren't TH-camrs. Otherwise, it looks like creating obstacles for himself, which he then heroically solves. There are some people who enjoy it.
I don't think there would be an advantage if you only used it as a desktop. But I'm pretty sure he uses it as a laptop and a tablet in other instances. Basically a way to have a single device that does it all.
I’m also now iPad, iPhone only. Photographer and work with. Lot of high res images. Does the Samsung T7 drive work well? Is it password protected, encrypted on iOS devices? I need a secure storage option without using icloud.can’t find this info anywhere online.
I have a 2020 11 inch iPad Pro. I do greatly enjoy using it, but as I’m looking to get a new mobile device this year, I’m very torn between getting a new iPad or a Microsoft Surface Pro device. I love my iPad, but it has glaring limitations and there are many apps that just don’t hold a candle to their desktop OS versions. I still haven’t decided which route I’m going. I don’t want a MacBook because I do want a touch screen device.

The cheapskate in me is thinking maybe I can get away with an iPad Air 5 or 6 instead of the pro….. waiting to see what the new ones look like and what that does to the pricing of the current units. I am retired and in my 80s so this will probably be my lifelong choice
Thank very much Fernando! You inspired me going IPad Pro only, thanks! Question: where can I get that wallpaper you used on your ipad in this video? Thanks!
This is a great video man. I’ve been following your series in the iPad for a while now and this explanation of how to incorporate it into your daily workflow is fantastic. Is all about removing the friction , one of the things that I started to play with lately is using Parallels Access on the iPad and connect to my Windows server at home and I can tell you that the part of running a full version of Excel is fixed with that. So I can now have a 100% Windows computer + Mac in a portable format.
Do you have a video on how to do this (set up a window server and connect it to the iPad?)? Not being able to run full Excel (and some other windows or even macOS software) is the main issue with the iPad Pro.
I was contemplating getting a iPad Pro before I got my MacBook m2 , the problem I have is that I code python and use IntelliJ unfortunately is not available for the iPad and other alternative apps in the App Store dont allow you to run codes just write which is pointless. I hope in the next gen there will be more coding software available for iPads
iPad Pro 11 has its pros and cons. File management and Microsoft Office is better in my surface pro x. iPad Pro is alright for photo editing, quick edits in Microsoft office, entertainment apps, and social media.
i LOVE this kind of setup however can anyone explain how to do those 2 things simply: 1) excel files without going from app to app? 2) donwload torrents or simply use stremio? any luck?
I tried the iPad as my computer experiment with the 2017 10.5 pro, LTE using Google services and it's functional for some work, but after upgrading to the 2020 Pro 11 had to go back to a Windows PC, to this day the iPad it's a better as a companion device than acting as your sole computer.
I would do this but I can't stand how a mouse or trackpad work on iPadOS. I don't like all the snapping it does, and there seems to be quite a bit of lag.
Now that I’ve transitioned to 100% iPad pro because we have great external drive support and Stage Manager. I have several 2Tb SSD drives attached to my thunderbolt 4 dock and now I wonder if I can plug my powered 3.5” hard drive hub into the thunderbolt dock, that dock has around 16 Tb of storage that would be nice to access from time to time, I need to test it, plug it in and see if it will work, being externally powered I’m thinking it just might give me access. I’m not sure if iPadOS has a drive capacity limit or not.
Just a simple beginner question with this type of setup. I have a iPad Air 5th but when I do extend the monitor, I cannot control it I have to put the app on that monitor on the iPad screen to be able to control the app. Do I need I presume some hardware to control the extended monitor. Any simple example on this ?
i love the iPad stage manager, but may i know if you experienced legginess/slow response/ non instantaneous movement when using a mouse(Logitech MX 3) on an external monitor (32 4k) ? Those are one of the things that made me use a PC more instead, i want to use the iPad more but this kind of lagginess made me use the former.
I use MX Keys Mini, Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse 2. Zero lag. I also used my Logitech Ergo trackball and K860 keyboard and also had zero issues. What monitor and dock/hub are you using?
@@jon5161 Not using any dock/hub, the MX master 3 mouse is connected to my ipad pro m1 through Bluetooth and the keyboard I'm using is the Apple iPad magic keyboard which is attached to my iPad while the track pad on it is usable at the same time. The monitor I'm using is Prism+ x390 Pro. Which i use the USB C cable to power/charge the iPad + to output the external display through it.
@@nikhafizal1246I looked up your monitor. If it is backwards compatible, it is not likely the cause of the lag you’re experiencing. It might be the cable, if not monitor. I am using a USB4 and Thunderbolt 3 cable for connecting my iPad to the external monitor.
For my own personal use case: iPad Pro for the fun, multimedia and confcalling stuff + Powerful Linux Desktop PC (with Garuda Linux onboard) for everything else….don’t need much else. In fact, I’m only keeping an additional Asus Laptop (with PopOS onboard) for redundancy/emergency purposes.
So I bave to buy an iPad, an external monitor, a keyboard, a mouse, an hub, a stand, cables, other accessories…etc in order to emulate a laptop experience. So wouldn’t be easier to buy a laptop?
🐬 I’m thinking of getting an ipad someday, maybe the next ipad mini or ipad air. The Pro model is just too exp for me, and i already have a mac for my home computer needs
Too much of the iPad as a replacement for a computer discourse is the term ‘workaround’ when I can just do on a computer. Another TH-camr I watch from time to time regularly goes the three apps he uses to achieve something that can be done with one on a computer. I have an iPad Pro, I enjoy using it, but it’s not a replacement yet.
Will definitely upgrading next year. Will be upgrading my 11 inch iPad for bigger size one. Been waiting for so long ahhahah. Anyone like the 12inch than the 11inch?
I've embraced the 'iPad only' lifestyle since 2019, and while it can be challenging at times, the overall experience surpasses words. As a co-boss of a dental practice and a lecturer conducting presentations and workshops solely on my iPad, I've discovered a simplicity that enhances learning. Admittedly, I miss some laptop features, but the trade-off for a streamlined approach is well worth it. Embracing this mindset has led to better narratives and simpler, more effective slides in my presentations, ultimately aiding people in grasping ideas more easily.
iPad Pro, especially the M chip versions need Xcode. I hope 2024 with the M3 iPad Pro has Xcode, because it’s meant to be a professional device. Plus Xcode is a native product for Apple, developed for Apples swift programming language. It’s getting pretty good for video and photo editing, but still missing vital features and functionality for programming professionals. Right now, iPads there is no reason to have anything over the M1, there is little that will require more than that in power. Only thing i can see making people need to upgrade, vs just want to for no reason is adding Xcode IDE and bringing more AAA games, like all the games on the Mac can run on the at minimum new M3 iPad Pro. Hell, I’d be ok saying in order to have Xcode and say these games, m3 is required.

I hope in the next gen there will be more coding software available for iPads
these aren't tech reviewers they are salesmen
You make this video once a month.
iPad Pro 11 has its pros and cons. File management and Microsoft Office is better in my surface pro x. iPad Pro is alright for photo editing, quick edits in Microsoft office, entertainment apps, and social media.
i LOVE this kind of setup however can anyone explain how to do those 2 things simply:
1) excel files without going from app to app?
2) donwload torrents or simply use stremio? any luck?
Love the wallpaper 🐬
Fernando informative video! Is there a way to connect iMac 2014 to iPad Pro 6th gen to utilize as second monitor for iPad?
as a medical student doing mbbs which monitor should I buy benq pd3205ua or pd3220u for MacBook air m1
Love these videos.
You can't extend your monitor anymore, apple got rid of the option in the ipad, you can only mirror it
What other kinds of hubs work for iPad Pro 12.9 year 2023 and a dell monitor for an A and B display not a mirrored display?????
Now if only the file storage was better and the BATTERY gets an upgrade - then iPad Pro would be perfect! 👍
Made it to the end good video
i love the iPad stage manager, but
may i know if you experienced legginess/slow response/ non instantaneous movement when using a mouse(Logitech MX 3) on an external monitor (32 4k) ? Those are one of the things that made me use a PC more instead, i want to use the iPad more but this kind of lagginess made me use the former.
I recently got an M1 iPad Pro and noticed zero lag when I hooked it up to my 4k monitor with a Logitech MX 3 mouse and keyboard.
I use MX Keys Mini, Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse 2. Zero lag. I also used my Logitech Ergo trackball and K860 keyboard and also had zero issues. What monitor and dock/hub are you using?
@@jon5161 Not using any dock/hub,
the MX master 3 mouse is connected to my ipad pro m1 through Bluetooth
and the keyboard I'm using is the Apple iPad magic keyboard which is attached to my iPad while the track pad on it is usable at the same time.
Like 👍 always a well-explained video! 🐬
🐬 Now I may go back to an iPad i'm currently using a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+ which is really nice but does have its drawbacks.
I use it for everything, 2020 model…don’t even have a monitor haha!
I like the iPad only concept, however it’s not ready. I’d watch you more if it wasn’t so commercially oriented.
What is the video editing software that you use? I heard Univision but not sure if that’s correct. Thanks!
Lumafusion! Sorry about that
If your iPad pro is only plugged into your monitor how do you keep it charged and how do you access the SSD?
For my own personal use case: iPad Pro for the fun, multimedia and confcalling stuff + Powerful Linux Desktop PC (with Garuda Linux onboard) for everything else….don’t need much else. In fact, I’m only keeping an additional Asus Laptop (with PopOS onboard) for redundancy/emergency purposes.
I use my iPad for work & fun, saves money
So I bave to buy an iPad, an external monitor, a keyboard, a mouse, an hub, a stand, cables, other accessories…etc in order to emulate a laptop experience. So wouldn’t be easier to buy a laptop?
You mean desktop experience. It's already a laptop if you have a magic keyboard (or alternative).
The monitor in your background when you are shown talking is showing the IPad? Looks like a Mac?
Great video!❤
I use the iPad Pro & Magic Keyboard as my main device/laptop, and the iPad Mini for real “iPad/Tablet” functions.
I’ve sold my macbook, and have to rely on ipad pro only. For me, it works perfectly, i run windows 10 on it 😂
🐬 I’m thinking of getting an ipad someday, maybe the next ipad mini or ipad air. The Pro model is just too exp for me, and i already have a mac for my home computer needs
Great vid. Do you find logi mouse scrolling in safari on iPadOS laggy. I've read comments on Reddit saying it is? Thanks 🐬
Is there a way to have Two 2️⃣ monitor support for the iPad and Mac 🖥️ setups
🐬 great video.
You can airdrop using cable now 😊
Imagine Continuity Camera comes to IPad… Will you need the IPad Pro?
iPad Air and an iPhone Pro would be enough for this set up.
🐬 I have an iPad M1 Air, use it with my M1 MacBook Air for both work and school.
Sam I use my iPad Pro 12.9 with apple magic keyboard 75 percent of my workday
Will definitely upgrading next year. Will be upgrading my 11 inch iPad for bigger size one. Been waiting for so long ahhahah. Anyone like the 12inch than the 11inch?
I dont have ipad pro but ipad air with m1 I used for like work. Everything online 🐬
I wonder how many times one can tell the same thing. No matter how many times, for me the iPad is still in no way capable of replacing my laptop.
In your opinion
I've embraced the 'iPad only' lifestyle since 2019, and while it can be challenging at times, the overall experience surpasses words. As a co-boss of a dental practice and a lecturer conducting presentations and workshops solely on my iPad, I've discovered a simplicity that enhances learning. Admittedly, I miss some laptop features, but the trade-off for a streamlined approach is well worth it. Embracing this mindset has led to better narratives and simpler, more effective slides in my presentations, ultimately aiding people in grasping ideas more easily.
I can understand because if you need 3rd party apps or a windows vm, it just is too complicated.
Nobody said it replaces a laptop. Have you watched this video??? It's exactly about in what ways is similar and different.
Listen my guy. Be intelligent, because you are. You cannot say in NO WAY. Because it can. It just cannot replace a laptop or PC in all walks of life.
iPad Pro, especially the M chip versions need Xcode.
🐬 Thanks - nice job.
