John Carpenter's Vampires, Leprechaun, Candyman, Ticks, Nightbreed, Jacob's Ladder, Wishmaster 1 & 2, Bad Moon, Ice Cream Man, Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Faculty, Silence of the Lambs, The Craft, Interview With the Vampire, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Silence of the Lambs etc are all great 90's horror movies. Then you got all the Halloween, Child's Play, Hellraiser, Nightmare on Elm Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th sequels that came out in that decade. I always felt like Tales From the Crypt was a very 90's horror show since it aired from 1989-1996. Tales From the Darkside the Movie came out in 1990 now that I think about it 🤔

DECEIVED with Goldie Hawn is aces. STEPFATHER 2 is well done. Don’t forget the HALLOWEEN sequels. KISS THE GIRLS, TALES FROM THE HOOD, THE CRUSH. Early 90s was more thrillers and serial killer/threat to the home and family then we got SCREAM and the late 90s resurgence of more traditional horror. Great video- lovely to see you rediscover some underrated class acts.

Fantastic how you address 'What is Horror' since it's a debate that needs to happen. Why so many horror fans don't want to let some films in the club but at the same time, normies don't want to admit it's horror (SILENCE OF THE LAMBS is the primo example). It's such a broad genre and I embrace all of the sub-genres and their minutiae.

This is true not just of the theatrical releases, but the video rental market of the 90s as well. If you look at the filmmakers who made money in the 80s off low-budget movies released to the video rental market, those guys (Fred Olen Ray, Jim Wynorski, David DeCoteau, Corman as a producer, etc.) all start cashing in on the erotic thriller boom. Basically we went from slashers in the 80s to erotic thrillers in the 90s both on the big and small screens.

Have you seen Tom Holland's THE TEMP? Would've been a horror movie if they'd gone with Holland's original gory Grand Guignol ending, but it works as a 90s erotic thriller black comedy with Lara Flynn Boyle of TWIN PEAKS fame. Recently watched THE BABYSITTER and MOTHER'S BOYS so I've been on a bit of a 90s thrillers kick myself.

Great points. I consider a lot of 90s thrillers as horror(depending on the themes of the movie), a lot of films from 1950s-60s were considered horror and they were thrillers in todays standards.
White Man’s Burden(1995) is a pretty good thriller with John Travolta I’ve not seen since the 90s.
For 80s fans, they need to consider 1979-1991 is 80s horror style. And a lot of films from 1990 were actually filmed in 1989.
but thanks for giving us a another perspective on 90s horror/thrillers. I got to research some 90s thrillers.

I wish I had an answer for ya, but I don't even know how I think. I know thrillers are a bit of a gray area for me. Some thrillers, like Flatliners or Jacob's Ladder, I will consider as horror. Others, like Silence Of The Lambs, no matter how hard I try I just can't view them as anything but a thriller.
There's always going to be some cross-overs with the basic elements. I guess to me it depends more on what the main focus is. Using Breakdown as an example (great movie btw), the main focus is on Kurt's character trying to find his wife. To me that's a suspense/thriller. Now, if the main focus had been on his wife and what she was going through that would've elevated it to horror status.

"Horror in the 90's was dead" compared to the golden years, the answer is yes, absolutely.
But the 90's in terms of horror is a very unique and mixed bag because we had a ton of horror on television; The X files, Are you afraid of the dark, Tales from the crypt. Which spawned the cartoon Tales from the Cryptkeeper. Plus all those Halloween/horror movies on Disney. Only one of which I actually care to watch and enjoy; Halloweentown. Plus several other horror adjacent TV shows and TV shows that had horror in them. Like Picket fences. Millennium with Lance Hendrickson, he had a slasher episode. Where somebody on a movie set of a slasher movie "based on a true story" is copycatting slasher movies. We even get a Motel hell reference. Even had a horror adjacent spin off of Baywatch called Baywatch nights.
In terms of movies: Ticks, Arachnophobia, Jacob's ladder, Single white woman, Innocent blood, The craft, Habit, Dead alive, The frighteners, Hocus pocus, Interview with the vampire, The faculty., Child's play 2, Species, Fear, Tremors 1 and 2, Misery, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Death to her, Blade, Serial mom, Stir of echoes, Scream. I aint even mentioning the movies that I enjoy but are "iffy" to most people like Pumpkinhead 2, Pet Semetary 2, Child's play 3, Gremlins 2, Ernest scared stupid, etc.
"I think horror in the 80's died" Yep. Great way to put it and very true.
I remember back in the 90's being really afraid when ever I watched Fear from 1996. I remember being kind of on the edge of my seat just knowing "something is gonna happen. This is gonna escalate." and just the idea, of this controlling, stalker type, manipulative boyfriend is incredibly disturbing to me. It also kind of hit home, because of the domestic abuse in my own home life. Mark Wahlberg who plays the obsessed boyfriend; great acting. He definitely earned my respect in that movie.
And I've also been watching more 90's movies, not just horror. Stuff I had missed, or needed to rewatch. I watched Single white woman in 2019. Had never seen it before, heard it was good and it is. It's very good. I watched Habit last year. Really good as well. This year I'm gonna be watching Basic instinct. Never ever seen it before, but heard about it a lot, seen it referenced, etc. You beat me to Pacific heights. I'll watch it eventually though.
In 2019 I gave Death becomes her a rewatch. Hadn't seen it since the 90's. Awesome movie. Loved it.
In 2018 I gave The crush a rewatch. Also hadn't seen that for a while. Still really good.
Oh and my all time favorite 90's thriller/slasher/serial killer movie is .....Copycat. I saw it on TV when I was very very little. Always remembered it. Never saw it all the way through. Just clips of it. Then in like 2015, 2016 I got a copy, watched it, and since then I've fallen in love with it. It's damn near perfect. Has Holly Hunter who's awesome in it and it has Sigourney Weaver in it as a serial killer profiler. As a true crime fan, Copycat might as well be made for me, because it's full of true crime fan service. Only a true crime fan like my self would get certain things. The ending is awesome. I absolutely love the ending. Just love it. Easily one of the top best horror thrillers of the 90's and you can tell it was written by a true crime fan and of COURSE today the film would be 100% bashed "this is unethical" "This is immoral" "What about the victims and their families?!" BLAH BLAH BLAH. Last year, I got really into 80's Madonna. Was put off on her first 90's album. It was too different for my tastes...but I gave the album 3 listens, I watched the music videos and I really started to like it. This was her BDSM album and I was watching a video where they asked teenagers to watch these videos from the 90's, two of them were Madonna's BDSM music videos and they were shocked and they were asked "What if this happened TODAY." and they were like "She'd be so canceled" "no way would she be able to do this today. This is too much. This goes far too far. She'd be so bashed for this." and to me, it's like "THIS IS THE 2020's!!!!!! SHOULDN'T YOUR GENERATION F**KING LOVE THIS DEBAUCHERY?! WHAT THE F**K IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!" You know, not to sound like an old man but "Back in my day." we kids loved this degeneracy. I was an 8 year old kid still in Elementary school watching Face/off. Listening to Eminem, and I.C.P. Watching Star ship troopers, watching Friday the 13th, Nightmare on elm street, etc. Finding magazines in the dumpster at the local park. I've become a big big fan of this one poliitcal/amatuer sociologist channel. I told her "if I made my own youtube channel it would be identical to yours." and in one of her videos she makes a point that completely infuriates me. She said instead of censors of the past being out of touch 50 year olds "it's usually 21 year olds" and that REALLY angers me. Again, what the f**k is wrong with you people?!
Then you got all the non horror movies. Like My girl. Love that movie. i watched My girl for my mom's birthday in 2020. Hadn't seen My girl since the 90's and damn. I absolutely loved it. The film takes place in 68. So my mom would of been around the same age as the girl. Now and then, another great awesome 90's movie. The crow, awesome movie. Love it. Total recall. True lies. Kindergarten cop, Demolition man, Starship troopers, Strange days, which I watched last year the night before New years eve. I remember watching it back in the 90's. When I was watching it I went "Hey, I had seen this movie before!!! I totally remember this." Addam's family values. Hadn't seen that since the 90's and gave it a rewatch in 2020 and last year again. I'm gonna be watching the first movie later in the year. Don't tell mom the babysitter's dead, which I also watched in like 2021. Really good. Predator 2.
I gave The mask of Zorro a rewatch last month. I saw that in theaters when it came out and watching it again, took me back and reminded me why I was a big fan of Zorro in the first place and i was impressed by how good the adventure and action in the movie was. They nailed it. Face/off, another great action movie. I remember as a kid thinking to my self "I want that jacket!" American pie. Hackers. Love Hackers.
So ya, I've been trying to revisit the 90's and watch stuff I had missed, despite growing up in the 90's and watching all these movies. I've been trying to get into and watch all these 90's thrillers.
Last year, I watched Thelma and Louise....it was okay. Not the "90's classic" I was expecting. I watched Pale blood, which was good. Not great, but not bad either. I loved the soundtrack by Agent Orange. Who actually are featured as the band in the movie. The acting and directing is good. I watched The addiction in 2020. Again, it was good, but not great. Didn't love it, but I do want to give it a rewatch. Last year I watched The net with Sandra Bollock, one of my favorite actors from the 90's. She's awesome. It wasn't great, but pretty good. It's not a horror thriller. It's just pure thriller, but ya. I liked it. Could of been better, but not bad. Last year I even watched Rockula. I expected to HATE the movie. "this really is a terrible movie. Not a lost gem" But I actually really liked it. Ya...SOME things about the film was BAD, cringe. The ending was TERRIBLE. But the music was good, the acting was great, the directing was solid. i really liked the directing.
A lot of the movies that I love, or really liked have a very low rating on IMDB. Like Cinderella 2000 from 1977. I loved it, and yet it has a 3.5/2 stars rating. That it total B.S.
The songs are great. Love the 70's scifi. It's pretty funny. The acting is great. It's fun. Great lyrics. 70's sleaze and sexual liberation. I loved it.
If 90's thrillers do not count as horror, then neither do giallo movies. Neither does Blow out from 1981. Neither does Halloween 3: Season of the witch, because Halloween 3: Season of the witch is a 70's thriller/horror throwback, just like Blow out. In fact, Halloween 3 is very similar to another 1981 thriller; Looker. Looker is an awesome 80's scifi thriller. There are multiple kinds of thrillers. There are pure thrillers, action thrillers, and horror thrillers. Prom night, that is a mix of slasher/horror/thriller. I personally love Thrillers. it's one of my favorite genres, especially when it's combined with other genres. Like action, slasher movies, etc. Hell, Eyes of a stranger also from 1981, LOL. 1981 had a lot of thriller classics. Eyes of a stranger is a great mix of slasher and 70's thriller. You gonna argue Eyes of a stranger isn't a horror movie?! And I watched Eyes of a stranger in 2021 and loved it. Definitely planning to watch it again. Great movie.
So to me, thrillers becoming a horror trend in the 90's was a throwback to 70's and early 80's thrillers.
To quote a horror fan and writer for Fangoria from In search of darkness about Halloween 3.
"Tom Atkins in Halloween 3 is very interesting to me because he's like a 70's anti hero in an 80's, post Spielberg plot." Ya, that's why I love Looker and Halloween 3. I love giallo movies. I love Blow out. I also love Jaws of course, lol. And if your liking these 90's thrillers and you love Halloween 3. Then I highly recommend Looker from 1981. It isn't horror, but it's really really good.
Oh and how can I forget another 90's classic - The Night flier. The Night flier is awesome.

How do you feel this relates to Hitchcock's movies and Suspense and also to Lifetime movies, which are a lot of Thriller type movies that center around women? My mom never rented Horror movies, but she did rent Flatliners and that was very memorable for me, especially the Kiefer bully storyline and imagery. She may have rented Flatliners because of Julia Roberts since she liked Pretty Woman a lot.

I wonder if horror fans of the 50s or 60s thought the genre was dead once Monster movies ended and horror transformed into something else.

As corny as this may sound, horror didn’t die in the 90’s it just changed shape. Then the 2000’s was over the top gore and supernatural stuff.

90's horror was nowhere near as great as 70's or 80's horror but it's underrated and I'll take 90's over 00's or 10's horror any day.

Totally acceptable opinion, and probably true. But for me the horror genre was defined (in my younger kid brain) as containing a strong element of the supernatural or fantastic. Now that I’m older and wiser I have a more liberal view, but I have to suppress that subconscious bias against ‘real-world’-centered thrillers as horror.

80s slasher is like my LEAST favorite horror sub genre. I know it’s the meat and potatoes of horror fandom but yeah. I like one off movies from the 1970s. Breakdown is fantastic btw. What separates that movie in people’s minds from the hitcher I wonder

Just watched Fear 1996, I thought it fucking sucked, but you might enjoy it for how dumb it is, Mark Walberg is so bad. (Edit) I just realized you mentioned you watched it, man what a shitty movie, genuinely so hammy and bad in all the worst ways. Watch Freeway with Keifer Sutherland and Reese Witherspoon, that movie is great
