Anchor Bay created the slipcover along with some of the other early DVD labels, Scream Factory revolutionized it, and Vinegar Syndrome made it an artform. Slipcovers do have a VHS aesthetic that makes releases feel more substantial, but at the end of the day I collect movies rather than cardboard. I just make an effort to pick up the ones I like shortly after they come out. As a poster collector I really like having the slips that depict original artwork, because for many movies that I love, I will never get the one sheet poster, so it's nice to have that artwork on a slipcover.

Maybe I'm older than you guys but as a horror filmmaker who is an 80s kid, as I have started to really curate a collection, the slip covers and premium prestige releases are my primary focus...I think if you grew up when vhs and movie rental stores first came out and got popular,it was the COVER ART that was so huge in walking around a store and deciding what you wanted to rent because There was no internet to tell us which movies were good. So the artwork played a huge role and I think a lot of collectors now hearken back to that time! I know that I do. And that's where the slip covers and prestige releases come in...also it contributes more to that analog feeling and nostalgia instead of seeing cold slick plastic...kinda like the difference between shooting on digital vs film...there is just something to it!
I used to throw my DVD slipcovers away as well. I didn't understand it and it covered the original poster art on the DVD cover. I've lightened up on slipcovers. I care more about the movie and its getting costly when these boutique labels come out with limited edition slipcovers all at once and trying to buy them before they sell out.

I just bought 4 film DVD collection (haunting in Connecticut, American haunting, the eye & the others) for $10 🇨🇦. Im not too particular. I like slips, steel books, and plain old Viva cases. I usually go with whichever is cheapest, unless it’s something special to me.
With my Halloween 4k’s I have all of the “hardcase” editions. I also back in the day bought the original releases of Halloween 2&3 from scream factory. Like others I also purchased the steelbooks of 2/3 and the amazing scream collectors blu ray box set. I sold off my scream blu rays of 2&3 (I kept my Steelbook editions and my blu-ray slips) I have since placed my steelbooks in with my complete collection. I then took my hardbox editions of 2&3 and added my blu ray slips in my 2&3 hardboxes. I’m a definite nerd!
Those hardcases broke me when it comes to slipcovers. I had all with hardcase and was only missing part one. When it came it had no hardcase. I removed all the other hardcases. Good decision, because now ALL Halloween releases on my shelf match each other (Scream Factory or not). That helped me realize that sometimes the solution is not to add something missing but to remove something that is incomplete. ^^

My main thing is the artwork. Most of the time with Scream Factory I actually prefer displaying the original art so a slipcover doesn’t matter much. Granted since you can’t see anything but the spines on the shelves it doesn’t matter much either way.
Great video and topic. I think the importance of aesthetics in collecting physical media is a given. Same way a book collector prefers hard covers. I've been into slipcovers since the early days of Anchor Bay but I never worry about missing out on one because I buy titles as they are released. The slipcovers that make absolutely no sense to me are the ones that have the exact same artwork on them as the case artwork.
I like slip covers, but I have plenty of movies without them. I will seek out a release if the slip has alternate art to what is on the case. I appreciate that 😊
My interest in slipcovers started because when I was a kid everyone I knew at the time used to throw them away usually If I get a film and it has a slip I'll keep it with it but it's not something I care that much about any more
You should have brought up the craziness of Guys like mid-level media that will collect movies just because they have numbers on the spine. And they'll buy the movie whether they like it or not just to have that number
i do like slipcovers but most important for me is if its like scream factory you get 2 cover arts one on the slipcover and a diffrent one on the case now thats awesome. and do it more fun to collecting movies with slipcovers if its diffrent artwork from the case.
with regard to the two SF slipcover question, I would never buy a movie twice just to put a slip on it, I only said it because of how ridiculous collecting has gotten, I could see other people doing it for the “aesthetics”. I was trying to make sense for them. My actual response to your two SF slipcovers is, It’s just cool to look at the different artwork and or have it as a second option on which to display, two options is better than one (for the one you don’t use, treat it as a art card).
Most of the time I throw the slip covers away. It's the same artwork most of the time. Plus I don't get why someone wouldn't buy the movie if it doesn't have a slipcover. People just being too picky imo.
The people like that are the same kinda people that will buy movies they don’t even like or will watch just to have it cause it matches others or something stupid like that.
Thought I was just going to pop in for a few minutes of this video and then watched the whole thing 😂 I’m constantly arguing with myself over whether it’s worth paying extra money for a sold out slip. For me, they make the releases feel more substantial / deluxe (although Kino’s cheap slips are testing those feelings). If they present artwork that isn’t represented elsewhere in the package then it becomes an absolute necessity for me. I’d be interested in an episode about box sets. That has been an even greater debate for me: what movie needs a box set? Does a movie I like, like It Follows, need to take up as much space on my shelf as an absolute favorite, like Martin or TCM?
I received my order from Kino Lorber yesterday with Kindergarten Cop, Paint your Wagon, Scarlet Street, Fear & Desire, Stalag 17, and Leviathan. All but Kindergarten Cop came with Slipcovers. I'm not sure if this bothers me or not.
As someone who also collects Magic the Gathering cards, your point about cardboard slips is almost identical to the cardboards cards of MTG. The problem in both MTG and slipcover releases is going to stem from the people who sell the product. If these companies don't re-release the product, they become incredibly overpriced and hard to obtain for casual players/collectors. Imagine if you couldn't get an edition of "movie x" because it costs thousands of dollars and as soon as one if for sale, the collectors market consumes it immediately. People need to pressure companies for re-release, and if the company abides, we need to make sure those products succeed so they are motivated to keep doing it.
I try to always get a slipcover for everything I want to buy even the studio releases. I just don't try to get boutique hardcases and limited editions. I'm fine with a standard versions that may have a slipcover with its original pressing. If something never had a slipcover then easier for me to buy during a sale.
can you do a video on unwatched movies in your collection and why you made the purchase? kens comment of “hundreds of good unwatched movies” really stuck with me. (not trying to be rude)
I'm not going to lose sleep if I miss out on a slipcover. The most important thing is the disc. If I get the slipcover that's cool but I'm not going on ebay to spend 20+ dollars just to get an oop slipcover. That's insane
I collect physical media for the actual movie Yes a slipcover is nice but I don't search it out or ignore it for that reason. It's out of control now. I put all my movies in alphabetical order so I can find them I don't care what matches or does not match.
Most of my blu rays don’t have slip covers. there is maybe 20 out of 2k that has slips. 4 dvd got them. Out of 20. and vhs I got about 2k tapes so far.
For me if the movie brings a slipcover it's O.K. but if not it's O.K. too. For me the important thing is the movie itself. There's people that won't buy a release just because it's got no slipcover. Strange!🤔 Anyway good topic and cool video guys!👉🙂👈
Before I watched TH-cam and went on Instagram I had no clue this was a thing and unfortunately I must have thrown out 20-something slip covers that are now worth a lot of money because I didn't like how they looked on the shelves like Garrett had said. I took them off because I said they're taking up more room and they're not matching the others this was many years ago of course
Slip covers are fine I can take them or leave them personally. I have gotten some that are intriguing from the aforementioned Vinegar Syndrome, Arrow and my Little Darlings 4k which I'm not quite sure of the company who released it. But overall rarely if ever do they effect the actual quality of the movie so they don't really matter.
I could take them or leave them. I really don’t care either way. The only ones that ever got a genuine reaction from me were the Scream Factory Halloween 4K slipboxes. They are the only slips I blatantly threw right in the trash. To cover such iconic horror movie art with something that looks like a fourth grader drew is outright sacrilege.
If the slip matches the case cover art, then I don't care much about it. If it looks bad to me, then I don't even want it. Ex. The Exorcist...I got the UK standard 4K with basically the original poster art instead of the horrible US slip. If it's a lesser liked movie, then I don't care as much unless there's a really cool slip. Sometimes, the price is just too much and I let it go.
I’ll take a slipcover if I can find it with for a good price. I’m not one to pay extra for a slip cover. I always buy my Vinegar Syndrome releases at this point as standards without slips to just not spend as much. It’s all about getting a deal for the movie so I can buy more. The slip is just cardboard at the end of the day. I really just buy it for the film.
If a slipcover comes free with the movie I want it otherwise I feel like people got more for their money than I did.. If I have to pay extra for a slipcover than I won't get it. Like when Satan's Little Helper came out and it was pretty much $20 extra for the movie with Slipcover than it was just to get the movie without ID rather go without
Am I wrong or were slipcovers on DVDs originally meant to prevent theft? Back in my retail days it was easy to cut open a dvd (without a slipcover) and take the disc out. So we’d find dvd cases all the time without the dvd.
If the slipcover matches the art on the case than that's no big deal for me to skip it. But if the slipcover is different from the case I will buy it but only for retail because I have no desire to over pay for a oop slipcovers. Like for instance I brought the collectors edition of terrifier 2 because the slipcover was different from the case art. I also brought the collectors edition's of night breed, dead silence, buba ho-tep & most recently killer knowns from outer space with the exclusive slips because they are different from the cases & they we're limited. But I also didn't pay full site retail for these because some of these were on sale. I never didn't buy a movie because it didn't have a slipcover. But I have waited for a price dropped for movies because it either didn't have no new commission art or It lacked special features. Sometimes for both reasons. I didn't buy scream factory's happy death day, happy death day 2u, & upgrade into it went on sale because it had no new commission art & no new features or hardly any at all that it wasn't worth almost 40$ each.
I refused to buy Scream Factorys 4ks of Happy Death Day 1 and 2 cause it didnt have a slip even on day 1. I wound up waiting to get it on sale. I wound up getting 4ks for both movies, both posters, and the pins all for 100% absolutely FREE. $0.
No slip, no dip. If it doesnt have the slip you might as well wait as long as it takes to get the movie for $10. You dont have to feel like your missing out on seeing a film 1st cause its literally so much releasing that you honestly wont miss it. Most people dont even open their movies till like 6 months after owning.😆 We all have that stack sitting to the side that we need to catch up on. But yeah, for me, if its no slip, its no dip.
I'm so weird on this 99 percent of the time I could care less than there's one movie I want it for I will say I don't care for them except for the box like Halloween 4ks or if it's original are and slipcover is alternate but dang I want that silver bullet slip covers
This is the kind of discussion I’m most fascinated with. I love the psychology behind collecting.

I like slip covers, but I have plenty of movies without them. I will seek out a release if the slip has alternate art to what is on the case. I appreciate that 😊
I personally throw all slip covers away. Some I will cut up the front and make a poster collage but otherwise I never keep them
I have OCD and it's a beautiful thing to not give a shit about slipcovers.
Great chat I cannot stand slip covers , none of my physical media collection has one .
I’m mad I missed out on Shin Godzilla & Alien 4k slip covers
Slips> steel 🙌🏼
i do like slipcovers but most important for me is if its like scream factory you get 2 cover arts one on the slipcover and a diffrent one on the case now thats awesome. and do it more fun to collecting movies with slipcovers if its diffrent artwork from the case.
I love them but some of the ones I missed like Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 are so expensive that I just buy the Blu Ray.
I have a steel box obsession
with regard to the two SF slipcover question, I would never buy a movie twice just to put a slip on it, I only said it because of how ridiculous collecting has gotten, I could see other people doing it for the “aesthetics”.
I only care about the slips when it’s a boutique label like vinegar syndrome
@@lobesmcgeethat’s what I’m talking about 🤜🤛 lol thx for checking this out.
Glad it was worth the watch. Vids to make you think and give you some different perspectives are always great!
Having varying thicknesses of blu ray cases bothers me more than some of them having slips and some not 😅
As much money as Ken blows on all this, he’s the wrong guy to be talking w about this😂
I try to always get a slipcover for everything I want to buy even the studio releases. I just don't try to get boutique hardcases and limited editions. I'm fine with a standard versions that may have a slipcover with its original pressing. If something never had a slipcover then easier for me to buy during a sale.
I dig slipcovers but I can honestly live without them
can you do a video on unwatched movies in your collection and why you made the purchase? kens comment of “hundreds of good unwatched movies” really stuck with me. (not trying to be rude)
We all do. Collector Problems lol
I'm not going to lose sleep if I miss out on a slipcover. The most important thing is the disc. If I get the slipcover that's cool but I'm not going on ebay to spend 20+ dollars just to get an oop slipcover. That's insane
Let's be honest here...."Limited Edition" releases are only limited to the amount the company can sell.
I throw mine away😅
I hope for a slip but if i dont get it i dont care. Thats made me a lot more sane since i decided that. I wont buy a slip separately
I will always buy a movie slip cover or not but I tend to buy the movies I love if available in a box set from Arrow, manta-lab,HDZETA etc.
Thx for watching. Vids that really make you think are always fun lol
@@Born2BeRad 👍
Wow love this videos, mid rad planet
Hahahah love it. thx man.
Unless it’s a must or a fav movie of mine, I hate slipcovers
I just want to buy the the disc in an envelope or empty case. No insert, no slip. Just the disc
🤣
Before I watched TH-cam and went on Instagram I had no clue this was a thing and unfortunately I must have thrown out 20-something slip covers that are now worth a lot of money because I didn't like how they looked on the shelves like Garrett had said. I took them off because I said they're taking up more room and they're not matching the others this was many years ago of course
I agree didn't know anything about this until a few months ago really don't care except for the boutique labels
I throw away slips and will never buy steelbooks
Love the balls lol 🤜🤛
My copy of army of darkness as a print issue. Disk 2 is disk 3/disk 3 is 2. And 1 is well part one. And there is no international cut on disk 2
I was collecting in the 2000s and I never heard that. Many DVDs had the black bar-shaped sensors inside the cases though.
Idk. But interesting
This video bullied me into spending $5K on OOP slips on eBay.
Sick deal 🤜🤛
@Born2BeRad Ikr. I couldn't beleive it. 1st time I ever got anything free.
Off topic I just found out they're going to be a new ghouies trilogy coming from the original creators from James dead meat YT channel today
Yup!
Need that cardboard
I only like slipcovers that pop out or shiny if it's reg slip if don't get its ok
I love a Slipcover me but they are completely pointless and fuck up over time
Not if you keep them in good condition. Media cabinets, shelves, don't just toss them around.
