When your primarch hates you, your blood brothers secretly hate you, cousins from other legions hate you, hisotrians assigned to your legion hate you, you hate yourself..... They actually may be in worse condition than World Eaters.

When he said "I just wanted to be a hero", that legitimately hurt. Because I wonder how many Night Lords, both Terran born and Nostramo born, thought they were heroes or could be heroes. Before the legion fully fell to degeneracy and Konrad Curze went mad, fully mad.
You could only imagine those whom stood for the true purpose The Eighth Legion held.

While I wholly agree with your statement, I also want to point out that the Terran-born NL hated the Nostraman-born ones because their culture was corrupting the legion. The old Chief Librarian was complaining that the Nostraman's immoral culture was corrupting the legion, and that no Terran was ever recruited to the legion again. So it wouldn't suprise me if the Nostramon NL couldn't care less about being heroes, but the Terran ones definately.

As well as the fact Konrad typically hated them.
As for the Nostramon born sons, I genuinely believe the first wave of warriors held heart and devotion to the original purpose.
As for the later generations, yeah no, they can go with the purge like the rest of them.

Talos Valcorans own mother was shot, after she had literally begged and cried in hope that Talos would recognize her.

Of all the legions, none have had a worse existence than the night lords. Hated for doing the duty they were designed for, Hated by their father, hated by their sibling legions. And yet they were the most merciful of the legions, they killed the fewest civilians, held the quickest compliance rate, followed their father into the depths of rebellion, and still fight in his name long after his death. Even the World Eaters found love in Khorne's savage embrace, Both Chaos and the Imperium hate the Night Lords.

Personally the iron warriors are like this except that everyone wants to use them and then cast them aside.
When a Night Lord can suddenly feel regret over his dark side actions of the past.
Suddenly starts raining in a Desert World.
It's Konrad's self-awareness, his sons would bare the same trait in moments of lucidity. And like their father, in those rare moments, no one can hate them more than themselves.

It remind some sorta or Sahaal after he got the Crown of Nox. Woke up after 10k years, found the legion his father left for him to inherit broken, twisted by chaos or just not there, went thought hell and back to get the crown, got it, sat in cockpit of his ship and now.
Now what?
Konrad is dead. The legion is broken. Nocturn and Tsaguelsa are destroyed. The company he was supposed to lead does not care or want to follow him. He is alone with only Navigator he kidnapped. A working ship and vast empty Cold stars.
He has the crown. He is the Lord Regent now. But with no Legion. He is Regent of Nothing.
Repeating that useless destructive habit that you don't even enjoy anymore just because you don't have the courage to face what would happen if you were to stop. I've been there.

The problem with this is most of the VIIIth Legion were remorseless murderers/rapists/psychopaths etc even before becoming Astartes, so I doubt the average Night Lord very often laments over stuff like this. Sure, you have your occasional Talos Valcoran, but that’s so far and few in between it’s almost negligible.
Night Lords worship the Chaos gods not because they seek favor, but because "fuck you" and fuck everyone else. There's a reason the other legions despise them...
They were those things at the age of what, twelve? Younger? These are clearly people who were given no chance from the beginning. Nostramo turned to absolute shit the moment Kurze left. If you don’t think a child soldier from essentially a third world can’t develop a deeper level of maturity over the course of ten thousand years. I don’t know what to tell you buddy.

There can be nuance to a space marine on both sides, but they're all too far gone from our 21st century moral perspective.
@@thisisaloserwithnolife8836 pretty sure most of what makes a human human is suppressed in the vast majority of space marine chapters or warbands. They are brutalized from day one and encouraged to keep that aggression to keep them in top killing form.
There's a reason why hive gangers and death world survivors are priority recruits for the vast majority of space marine chapters.

If it was a movie, I could see a quick scene being flashed on the screen, that of a child on Nostramo, watching the other legions treated with glory, awe, and respect, and for the first time in their life, smile in wonder and hope, wanting to be treated just the same. To be loved by many and hailed as a hero.
Such a huge imposing creature, a being of great and terrifying might, for a brief second reverting to a simple child who only wanted something nice for once.

One of the most poignant moments was when the emperor talked to Konrad on Tsagualsa and he said that if only they had one last conversation then Konrad wouldn't have turned traitor

When you realise the VIII were, ironically and metaphorically, the ones least covered in blood of any of the Legiones Atartes. Kill a few dozens to a few hundred to spare thousands or millions the the true horrors of war against a legion of gene enhanced murderers equiped with the best and most terrifying weapons and armor mankind can field.

There was an interesting short story about the Night Lords doing a recruiting raid, they made a lot of noise, got everyone jumping at shadows, a whole hab block got purged, but in total they directly killed exactly one person.

I feel like you can find that instance in so many characters of any legions, though evidently the traitor ones are far gone in most cases, you'll have some or a few of them trying to remain true to what they wanted. In one of the heresy books some of the iron warriors during the purging of olympia stopped themselves from killing civies for a moment because they questioned what they were doing. But indoctrinated and loyal to their primarch they did it anyway and damned themselves.
Night lords, iron warriors, alpha legion and hell the astral claws(red corsairs) all had their reason for doing what they did. But yeah warhammer aint a happy place.

-It didn’t help that when he tried to connect with one of his brothers, it was with Fulgrim.
-personally I believe that if Konrad had tried talking over his issues with Lion el Johnson. Things would have gone better.
