  • Miss Letty Frost (Ruth Denning) was a desperate criminal who escaped from prison, breaking her back as she did so. Now she's made amends since she's become paralyzed, and wheelchair-bound. Letty has crafty expressions like she knows and has seen everything, and is able to do an 'about face' of character with some scary facial agility. Letty is now a home owner running a boarding house, which is home to a group of really old women, all are ex-prisoners, and are former associates of hers. Each has a criminal past to hide. Mrs. Louisa Sprule (Nora Nicholson), in particular, is a tenant that is still an active pickpocket and shoplifter.
Contrasting to Ruth is her quirky, artistic, cute-as-a-button, naive niece, Freda (Joanna Dunham), who in reality is actually Ruth's daughter. Her husband is an attractive businessman, Howard Pays (Jack Loring).
Word soon arrives that Miss Jean Berry (Gwenda Wilson), a former associate of the old housemistress whom she left in prison, is looking for her, with plans of blackmail.
Letty, which isn't her real name, is now being blackmailed by her former partner-in-crime with a score to settle from Letty's past, Miss Jean Berry, who knows Letty's real name.
A 1961 British Black & White crime film directed by Charles Saunders, produced by Guido Coen, screenplay by Brandon Fleming, based on Gerald Anstruther's play, cinematography by Geoffrey Faithfull, starring Ruth Dunning, Nora Nicholson, Joanna Dunham, Howard Pays, May Hallat, Gwenda Wilson, Ian Colin, Gladys Henson, Barbara Everest, Max Brimmell, James Raglan, Trevor Reid, and Jerold Wells.
Mary Ruth Dunning (1909 - 27 1983), born in Prestatyn, Denbighshire, was a Welsh actress of stage, television, and film. As a young actress, Dunning was a member of an amateur theatre company in Altrincham. In 1934, she took over a part from Wendy Hiller in "Love on the Dole," at the Garrick Theatre in London. Other stage appearances for Dunning included Val Gielgud's "Punch and Judy" (1937). A. A. Milne's "Gentleman Unknown" (1938), Ted Willis' "The Eyes of Youth" (1959), and Willis' adaptation of "Gorky's Mother" (1961). Dunning played Mrs Grove. in "The Grove family" which ran from 1954-57.
This briskly paced yarn was primarily filmed at Twickenham Studios with the shops next to Strawberry Hill railway station, notably the chemist's in Wellesley Parade, being used for external location shots.
The beginning of the film takes place in an actual parade of shops. A hardware shop, a jeweler's, a grocery store (Lyons Maid advert on the door), a chemist and a sweet shop (Platignum pens advert on the door), Typhoo Tea, Golden Shred, a massive sign reminding us top 'keep regular' with Ex-Lax and the YZ chewing gum machine nailed to the wall, and Lyons Maid. This awesome nostalgia is all a trip down memory lane!
Another nifty crime programmer from the team of director Charles Saunders and producer Guido Coen, the makers of "Jungle Street Girls" (1961).
Charles Joel Saunders (1904 - 1997) was an English film director and screenwriter, and brother of theatrical producer Sir Peter Saunders. Educated at Bedales, Saunders entered the film industry in 1927 as an assistant director and editor with such companies as Gaumont-British. His directorial debut was the romantic comedy "No Exit" (1930), which he wrote, produced and directed. However, his main occupation from 1930 to 1943 was in the film editing sphere, learning the trade by contributing to over 20 films, and rising to become supervising editor for the Gainsborough movie "Alibi" (1942), a thriller which starred James Mason and Margaret Lockwood. He collaborated with Bernard Miles to co-direct (and co-write) "Tawny Pipit" (1944). After working as a second unit director on "The Way to the Stars" (1945), and as a location director on "The White Unicorn" (1947), he resumed his career as director with "Fly Away Peter" (1948). Saunders would go on to make around ten films, including "One Wild Oat" (1951), featuring a then little-known Audrey Hepburn, before moving into television, and in 1953 and 1954 he directed eight episodes of the anthology series Douglas Fairbanks Presents, for Douglas Fairbanks Productions Limited. He was still busy with several movie assignments, making "The Golden Link" (1954), "The Scarlet Web" (1954), "Meet Mr. Callaghan" (1954), "The Hornet's Nest" (1955), "One Jump Ahead" (1955), and "A Time to Kill" (1955). Returning to television direction once more, he then made seven episodes of the BBC police drama series, "Fabian of the Yard" (1955), before completing three more films "Behind the Headlines" (1956), "The Narrowing Circle" (1956), and "Find the Lady" (1956). After more than a dozen additional films, concluding with the crime thriller "Danger by My Side" (1963), Saunders retired from film-making.
This little B-movie thriller about blackmail and murder from the early 60's delivers solid script, direction and performances in this surprising crime story. Very British.

What a pleasantly pleasant film to watch.🎉 bit of a time capsule of a era long gone. The cars, streets, dress, mannerism, and shops. Really enjoyed watching this.

The lack of diversity and inclution makes this even better to watch.

Why reveal the whole plot!? Glad I didn't see the commentary till after viewing. I also wouldn't describe the talented Ruth Denning as portraying scary facial expressions! Thank you.

An excellent film, even if the low budget means that the denouement is somewhat rushed.
Joanna Dunham was a very beautiful lady, but Jackie Noble (as the young maid, Maisie) is also very lovely.

I was not introdued to the brass buckled sam brown whacking belt till about 1963 at age five. Then forced child labour at age ten about. Forced to stack shelves on a Saturday for collecting the refund money from Corona pop bottals from the back of the shop. Had to do a milk round also for helping my self to funds from under the milk bottles.
