    Just wanna clarify something:
BIOS and UEFI aren't opposites (i think you guys understand what I'm saying)
Your BIOS just handles Basic Input Output (forgot what the S stands for).
In the BIOS, atleast in my motherboard's BIOS, you can set it to Legacy or UEFI.
So it's either Legacy with MBR or UEFI with GPT.
Not BIOS or UEFI 😅. Hope this helps

Andrew I'm just a hobbiest but i been playing around for a long time. You are mistaken about partitions if you say a 4T hard drive you can't have two 2T partitions I do it all the time on my older MBR machines. I usually limit my partitions to 1.9Tb so they can work on older machines. the largest I have tried is my 5T western dig 2.5" usb Its not perfect like all hard drives you lose about 10% for magical stuff i can't exlaine I have complained about the drive manufacturers cheating but nobody gave a shit. As far as EFI I know what it is but it don't like me and I struggle navigating around from lack of pratice. thats why i'm here.

I have windows 7 with premiere pro installed, should I stick to MBR for each hard drive I connect to it or make them GPT? Want to download video to an external SSD drive and edit with that hard drive on Windows 7.

@@amitmadan496 this should not be an issue either way. I suggest moving to gpt when you upgrade from windows 7, but for now it's probably fine

I've been confused about this because I have been trying to dump Windows and go to Manjaro. Everytime I try to install it from the USB drive, it crashes before I can install. I figured it out that GPT was the main problem because I was so used to using MBR.
This video made it easy to understand why, how, and what reason I should just do GPT from now on.

  • @paullastnamehere3295

You can use command prompt to convert a drive from MBR to GPT or GPT to MBR. This comes in handy with cheaply built premade 'Gamer PCs' when the first power up doesn't boot Windows and gives a configuration error. I learned this on the fly fixing a computer for a family member and had no idea what MBR and GPT was as I am a web developer. I would like to note that the PC I was working on had a 512GB M.2 drive that was configured to GBT. I couldn't use a USB stick to repair or reinstall windows, so I had to convert the drive to MBR using command prompt. After converting it to MBR, I was able to install windows, and everything went normal from there. I came here to learn the difference so thank you for the information.

You can convert from mbr to gpt without loosing data via the command prompt mbr2gpt tool, I've tried it a couple of times specially to clone to NVME. I bought a sata SSD, sata M.2 & NVME SSDs. Installed mbr installations on all sata drives, converted to gpt and cloned to the NVME drive and all worked without a problem. First boot is a bit slow but after it makes it's own ajustments after reboot it's all good.
And cloning to a smaller drive is fine, acronis sometimes adjusts it itself to fit to a smaller drive, if not Macrium reflect allows you to do so

Here's the gist of the answer to my question. I bought a 4tb ssd drive and the only way I can use full capacity is to plug it in as an external drive to my laptop. I can't make use of its speed at bootup which is why I got it in the first place. I only found out about the connection to uefi after I already did 2x9hour os migrations. You ask why I didn't do my research before I purchased an ssd drive? I've got like four >4tb external drives already hooked up to my laptop. Tech left me in the dust while I was doing other things.

I just recently converted an MBR to GPT and it wasn't that hard (I converted my whole disk including the partition C: only on CMD) The method is easy but the requirements are easier:
    1. Open CMD as admin:
    2. Type diskpart
    3.list disk
If there are more than 3 partitions delete one (like the recovery partition)
3.1 type "sel vol (whichever u want to delete)
    3.2 type in "delete partition"
⚠️⚠️⚠️Be careful to not delete the C:/ partition⚠️⚠️⚠️
    4. Type exit
    5. Type"Reagent /disable"
    6.type mbr2gpt /validate /disk: (any number u want) /AllowafullOS
7.(if says compatible or smth like that) then type mbr2gpt /convert /AllowafullOS
    8. Done... Now restart your PC for some reason and check on disk manager if it says GPT or "GUID Partition Table"

First of all its not BIOS vs UEFI its legacy vs UEFI any kind of computer has to go through a BIOS thats why if you go in startup tab of task manager you see last BIOS time in right top.
Second win 10 runs on UEFI so older machines used to run UEFI on MBR.
Third a reliable way to convert MBR to GPT is by using a tool called AOMEI partition assistant.

So how to convert a MBR drive to GPT.
There's 2 ways, the hard way is to get stuck in a boot loop and somehow use the command line to do it, but I've forgotten and I don't want any1 to go thru the same horrible experience as I did.
Jokes aside. This method will erase your data so back it up. Also, DON'T DO THIS TO YOUR C drive (where your windows is installed). If you want to make your C drive GPT, you'll have to re-install windows.
Firstly, you have to unmount the drive you wanna convert. This means you have to boot of an external usb or hdd (or even another hdd in your computer) with a different copy of windows/linux (pop os works for me)
    2. After booting of the usb drive, you go to the drive you wanna convert, and format the drive and wipe all data (this is why you need to backup everything).
    3. Change the partition table to gpt.
