The culprit is the magazines. The ammo doesn't come up the feed ramp quick enough since the commander-sized slide cycles faster than the full-sized 1911. The commander-sized pistol also need to be gripped tighter than the full-sized 1911 to prevent malfunctions. The longer Mec-gar magazine needed to be tuned with the pistol in order to activate the slide lock. Lube that new 1911 well before you shoot it.

These pistols are tight. Tighter that a couple pistols I have cost 3 times this pistols cost. A break in is a good thing with some of these. I own 3 RIA pistols and my .45 and .22 TCM both had to being broken in a little. After about 200 rds though each the 4 combined failures were never seen again. My 10mm Rock Ultra tactical II never had one hiccup. Looking for a 4.25" when I see one for carry. I can honestly say I own $1400-$2300 1911's that don't shoot as well as my $600 Rock Island 1911's. I trust my life to them. I even take my 10mm on Texas hog hunts because I know it won't let me down. Good job.

The malfunctioning only happened with the fellow with the small hands and it's a fact that he was shooting rapid fire on several of them. It's easy to limp wrist rapid firing.

I have the full size version in 45acp. It had issues with fail to lock back and stove piping until I switched to Wilson 47D 8 round mags. Runs flawless now. Some 1911's can be picky when it comes to different mag manufacturers.

3 of the malfunctions I saw were due to your grip… still I’m in the process of purchasing a new 4” 1911 and this video was not only very informative but also very well put together. It’s helped me make a smart decision thanks

Grip? More like an inferior pistol with use of questionable spaghetti western 1911 magazines. The only 1911 magazines anyone should be using should be Tripp Research Cobra Mags, Wilson Combat or mcCormick mags. We are the number 1 reviewer of 1911’s on TH-cam.
Most made in the Philippines 1911’s suck to be completely honest. Cast frames and poorly assembled. - B9USA

Both of them function without any problem. RIA 1911 is a very solid pistol, I will buy another RIA if I feel that I want another 1911.

I own this gun, a friend and I bought one each new at the same time. The Good: Overall great value. Super trigger, great sights, very accurate. Cycles everything through factory mags as well as Wilson Combat mag. The Bad: Grips: while they look & feel great, the holes were about 0.030" off spacing and gun was assembled whereby the screws drew the grip down & stripped the threads. I had to grind my grips with a Dremel and replace the screws with Wilsons. From the factory, my trigger bow was right to the magazine and the empty mag would not drop out. Notified Rock Island and had to send him back, waited about 4 weeks. No communication in between. The gun returned with new grips and trigger bow, all good now. Frustrating experience, but I get that it's not a Colt price or quality. Now that it's back, love the gun. My buddy's gun had no issues and digests everything as well.

I have replaced the recoil and firing pin springs, have replaced the extractor after 1500 rounds because I thought it needed it. I notice getting the right magazine is important for 1911's. But I love this gun it just runs and runs. I also have Remington's 1911 and have shot over 15k rounds through it and love it too.

Hey Beretta Sr. and Jr., I have that same 1911 in the CS Series and LOVE It! I come from strong 1911 roots (My deceased Father a Custom 1911 Pistol Smith) and trying this particular was a bit outside my wheelhouse but Sootch00's video sealed the deal for me. Right out of the box, accuracy was stellar at 25 feet to the point where I could put 7-8 rounds under a 1/2 dollar consistently with little to no effort! I did have a couple of malfunctions but called Armscor Customer Service the suggester that it may be the extractor. they sent a new extractor and firing pin spring with retainer and the issue was solved without sending the gun back. The Parkerized Finish gets better with each Castle 50-5 wipe-down and I did smooth down the VZ Grips a bit with a Red 3M Scotch Pad to remove the sharpness. LOVE THIS Gun and thanks for the featured road test. I am currently looking to get the same MS Tact II Ultra in 9mm but a Glock 26 LE Trade in/Excellent Condition seemingly made it to the collection first!

I appreciate all your 1911 videos and reviews by someone who knows about 1911s.
In addition to 3 Colts and 2 Kimbers, I added a "Charles Daly" 1911 EFS (Enhanced Full Size), basically the same gun as the test, but 5" barrel, also made by Armscorp in the Philippines. I picked it up for $525 and couldn't pass on it for that price. I have been very pleased with it. One of my Colts, is a Series 70 Gold Cup National Match I have owned since 1975. If there is any difference in accuracy between the two, it would take a better shooter than me to find it. I prefer the sights on the Colt for target shooting, but as far as accuracy there is little difference with equal ammo.
Except for the one 1918 mfg. Colt 1911 I own which is 100% original, my standard procedure on any 1911 is to replace the extractor with a Wilson Combat extractor, mirror polish the barrel and frame feed ramp and *use ONLY Wilson Combat magazines.* I just no longer bother with anything else. The factory mags stay in the box. I just don't have any failures to feed or extract. *An extractor and polish job is a lot cheaper and takes a lot less time than a 200-500 round "break in".*
I have 3 - 5" guns, One Colt Commander and 2 - 3" Kimber Ultras (Ultra Carry and Ultra CDP) They all run well with 230 gr. FMJ and Federal HST ammo and my normal practice load using a 230 gr. Lead RN which I cast myself from straight wheelweights.

If I bought one, I would polish the feed ramp, which they don't do. I would also check and if needed, I would throat the barrel. From what I've seen on other videos, the barrel is only partially floated. The ejection port looks like It's lowered and it is faired so these 2 operations should take care of any reliability issues. At the price point these weapons sell at, it would be worth the effort. I think I want one. Also the dwell time may be off. Changing the recoil spring would fix that.

I've been shooting 1911's for over 40 years. EVERY time I've tried the 'thumb on top of the safety', it has been very uncomfortable. I seldom use that method, except to prove to myself, once again, how uncomfortable it is, and I have NEVER had an issue with accidentally applying the safety. Decide what works best for you and train accordingly.

Note the amount of muzzle flip between the two shooters vs the number of jams. The 1911A1 requires a VERY firm grip. Also, any new 1911A1's I have shot have required that the barrel feed ramp be polished (and the edge "broken"), regardless of how well the frame ramp is polished. I firmly believe the first accessory for any such pistol should be a Dremel tool!

In all the video reviews I've seen of RIA guns they ALWAYS have some sort of issue with that ARMSCOR AMMO, as well as many other brands of guns having issues with that ammo.
And then again I've never had good luck with extended mags in a 1911 platform.

First off, thanks for the videos guys!! Still building my channel base up myself with the tech side, and am planning starting a channel for firearms as well. I haven't handled a Rock Island yet, but have handled and fired the Springfield EMP, Ruger SR1911(9mm), Smith and Wesson very similar to your older model, Colt Competition (9mm), and my new Dan Wesson Specialist. My initial thoughts are that you definitely start to notice the quality increase with price obviously, but you get to a sweet spot where you can get a great gun for X amount of money. In my personal experience it is definitely in that $800-$1000 range, but that is mostly my observations and opinion.
Thank you also for responding to comments!! That goes a long way for me and that is why I subscribed to your channel. Hopefully you will start seeing some of my vids up in the coming months.
Not easy to make good content and balance other things in your life along with it. Great job guys.

Captain TechReview Let me know when you get a few videos up on your gun channel and I will come by and watch the videos and leave some comments. I enjoy doing this especially for our Subscribers who are getting their own Channel up and running. I think it is the right thing to do. Some of the bigger Channels never help out the New Channels and Young Beretta and I could never understand this attitude. Let me know after you get 4 or 5 videos up and I will be happy to stop by.
      Respectfully, Beretta Sr.

Just curious guys, did you strip, clean and lubricate the pistol before the test firing? Generally I've found that to be a good practice with any new firearm. For what it is worth, I have the full-sized version of this pistol and the ONLY trouble I've had with it has been with the supplied ACT magazine and with Armscor ammo in combination. I ended up putting the factory mag away and just running my Wison 47D's that I use in all my other 1911's, and had absolutely ZERO feeding issues over the next 500 rounds of mixed Speer Lawman, Federal American Eagle, Wnchester White Box, Fiocchi, and HST.

Just bought a new Rock Island 1911 GI FS a couple of weeks ago for $386.00 plus tax and fees, put 250 rounds through it so far, no malfunctions other than slide not locking open on the last round and that only happened with the factory supplied Italian mag, with Wilson and Chip McCormick Shooting Star 8 rounders not a single problem. Also have not used Rock Island ammo, heard of too many problems. Functions 100% with both ball and JHP from Federal, Colt, and Sellior & Bellot. The only modifications I plan on making are a set of walnut or rose wood grips and maybe some Novac styled sights.

A lot of people say that the RIA 1911's don't like Armscor ammo. I have the exact same gun, and it runs just fine with cheap ammo (UMC). That being said, I think that's what your issue was. Maybe not, but I thought I should mention that.

I have two RIA 1911s, .45 and 10mm. Shoot ball ammo out of good magazines for the first 250-500 rounds. It will settle in. I would almost guarantee your malfunction problems were mostly magazine related.

I would get some Wilson 47d mags and start there, My brother has one and it hated the factory mags that came with the pistol. The wilson mags pretty much cleared the malfunctions up. Me and him took fighting pistol at tactical response in Camden Tennessee. 2 day thousand round class and the pistol finished the class fine. Which is means its GTG IMO.

Use Lucas synthetic gun oil and slightly oil the factory magazines as well !! Get some oil down in the magazine and push them #own several times with no ammo in the magazine , feel for any hang or bind anywhere , if you oil the slide and barrel slightly then you shouldn't have any problems with it ! If you do have issues after this oiling change magazine to aftermarket magazine and yes oil it too !
