Can a Mustang out-P a Precision Bass? | Fender Mustang vs Precision Bass | D'Addario Chromes

  • In this video I compare the Made in Mexico (MIM) Fender Mustang PJ bass with a Fender Custom Shop 1959 NOS Precision Bass.
    Both basses are using their Precision split-coil pickups only in order to get a direct comparison. They are both strung with D'Addario Chromes Flatwound strings. You are hearing both direct into an Avalon U5 preamp - Steinberg UR824 - Logic Pro X.

    Hearing the Mustang first I was like "whoa, this bass sounds amazing", but then on the very first note you played on the Precision I got blown away. I made my mind already on that note. Precision it is.

    Great demo - thanks! I have both of these basses with flats, and although you can detect tiny differences soloed, you cannot tell them apart when playing with a band, and the P/J has a little extra bite available if you need it. And - I love the way it feels - really my favorite of dozens I have owned.

    I just ordered a PJ mustang on a whim. Really reassuring to hear it back to back with a P and sounding so good! The extra highs really give it a nice clarity that the P doesn't have. Love it.

    great video. I just bought the mustang bass and I've been comparing it with my friends p-bass all night. I think switching to flats would help the mustang but there's no denying there's something about the P bass's warmth that the mustang's snappier nature can't compete with. I have to side with the P bass tone on this one, but I doubt I'll return the mustang, it's short scale is just too cool and makes harmonics easier for me. I could also EQ it a bit. Both have their highlights, so Im definitely torn between the two!

That said, my first bass bought in 1978 or 79 was a early 70s Mustang, and when I saw these PJ mustangs, I thought it would be a decent stand-in for a P, even for lazy engineers... it's awesome! I just bought one today. it has more tone options than both a P and J bass. I also own an American made Fender P bass which is my baby. I like the Mustang almost if not more than my P bass. The neck is so damn slim, very fast neck if you want to actually do some fast licks on the instrument. it's nice for someone who has small hands or short fingers (like me lol). tone options are endless. Bridge Jazz pick up can give you that very mid range Jaco Pastorious sound, P bass pick ups have awesome punch to it, almost rivals the P bass itself, both pick ups are PERFECT for slapping. if you're a fender fan I definitely recommend it! :)

    I think some of the difference in sound is coming from the way the mustang is wired. The hot pickup wire and the output wire are reversed from where they usually are on the volume pot on most modern basses. I changed mine so it is wired the same as a P bass and it sounds even better. More meaty and punchy and also the tone knob works properly whereas it seemed to cut the volume a bit when turned down with the original wiring

  • @billytai1096

    When you A/B'd the basses I noticed something interesting. The mustang at 50% tone sounds like the P at 100% tone. And this ratio remains true throughout. When you had the mustang at 0% tone it sounded similar to the P at 50% tone. I'm sure you could get the basses much closer by dialing in the tone on each.

  • @lawrencevoltz5541
    @lawrencevoltz5541 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have both. Ended up swapping out the stock Mustang pickups for EMG Geezer Butler Signature, which is what I also have on my P-bass. The Mustang has a bassier timber to it, but the difference is so minute that a twist of a knob or tap on an effect negates it. Switching permanently to Mustang for my old, beat up mechanics hands.

I liked both of these basses but since I leave my strings on for years my sound would be more to my liking.The J-BASS bridge pickup adds a whole new dimension to the instrument as well,but since you were doing P vs P I understand why you didn't turn on the bridge pick up.I would also like to see an Aerodyne vs Fender Player series Mustang and hear the difference.Thanks for the nice demo.

  • @OutnBacker
    @OutnBacker ปีที่แล้ว

    I like them both. The Mustang ain't no slouch and could easily hold its own. If I still played and didn't have such old arthritic hands, I'd get one. As for the low end boom of the P bass, that can be achieved by all those little knobs on the amp. In the late 70's, I played a '64 Tele Bass through an Acoustic 150B head into an Ampeg V-4B cab that had two 15 Altecs. Probably could have used the Mustang, but the clean Acoustic did the trick and I got the Ricky sound with round wound strings. Got the lions at the zoo three blocks away to roar more than once. Blew out tires within 100 yards. Them's were the days, kids.

    • @allrequiredfields
      @allrequiredfields 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, interesting - you may be mixing the two up; short scale basses actually produce a deeper low end that also sustains for longer because of the length of the string. The soft, booming sound is definitely the realm of the short scale bass.
      If you want big, soft low end, you're going to want a short scale bass with Thomastiks strings, through a ported (as opposed to sealed) bass cabinet with larger speakers.

    With guitars, it's possible to change the tone, sound and feel with a small change in string gauge or type. Is the same true, especially with gauge, of bass? Can u use a slightly thicker string to get more tension and thicken up the sound? I thought both were great. I could tell the P had more tension though. Not a good or bad thing.

  • @compucorder64
    @compucorder64 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The Mustang is more melodic, clearer upper mid, but with also a purer fundamental. But, the Precision comes across beefier because of that low mid growl. It would depend on the mix, with a guitar parts with a lot of low mid growl, the Mustang might sit better in a mix. In a sparser mix, with more lead guitar or high funk guitar, the P Bass could shine. I use the growl on my Darkglass Alpha Omicron to dial in a bit more low mid growl on my Mustang, to get it closer to that P Bass ballpark, if I need to. Equally, you could cut the low mids and boost the upper mids on a P Bass to get it into Mustang territory.

      bflo1000 I think MiM vs MiM would be very little difference sonically to the CS. For me, CS is more about feel and better class of woods than anything else... I will say that the CS pickup in my P isn’t very hot, and had a lot more nuance in its tone. That would be the only difference from a listening perspective compared to the MiM 50s P I had. T

      bflo1000 it’s wood for me. That’s the reason I went for a CS. The fretboard is a quality piece of rosewood and the neck is clearly a great cut when you look at it in detail. The electronics are a little better - it has the vintage style pots for example. It feels like a more ‘unified’ instrument. But there’s only so much difference you can have in fit and finish when it’s effectively just two pieces of wood bolted together. The MiM is well made. It’s just a feel thing in terms of the materials, for me.

    The secret if you're trying to get your Mustang to sound like a P-Bass is to never A/B it with a real P-Bass. That said, I love the way a Mustang sits in the mix. It sounds as good as a P-Bass, just not exactly the same - a bit less growl, but nicer highs.

    It's really about context: if you need a softer, boomier low end (shorter scales produce more low end and less thump) - or if you want a nastier, more chaotic top end (lower tension strings tend to 'rattle' more when played harder) you go for the short scale.
    If you want a punchier, tighter, more focused low and top end, and a mid-range that you won't have to coax out of your amplifier, to go for the longer scale.

  • @enparticular
    @enparticular 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    in a mix content they sound amazingly close, and you could fix the difference with some clever eq. the Precision has some midrange growl that is nice and unique, but i also think the chromes sound better when aged. in some parts it sounded more like a comparison between old + new chromes than different basses.
    also you played mostly in the 3rd and 2nd string. playing in the 4th E string is where you notice the short scale in the mustang more, it's a bit more flabby compared to a precision. anyway, great comparison.

    I've always been curious about the Mustang bass. Per your video, the Mustang's output level is a bit hotter and more even than the P-bass, but the extra tension of the P-bass strings provides a punchier attack (most noticeable on the E and A strings). The weak G string could be tweaked a bit with pick up height adjustment. This makes me wonder if the pick up location on the P-bass could be moved for a more even response. If I had to choose, I'd go with the P-bass. For someone wanting a lighter instrument or shorter scale, the Mustang is a good option.

    To my ears, the Mustang is a little brighter with the tone at max. The P bass tends to be a bit more "burpy" in the mids. Of course, rolling the tone back changes both those characteristics. I have a 2013 MIJ Mustang Vintage RI that I love. I can get almost any sound I want. I've found that most sounds can be achieved with the tone control and some EQ tweaks on my amp. The one sound I have trouble getting is that mid-forward burp. However, I think that's just the nature of the Mustang. I would have to say the only thing I don't like about it is the 7.5" radius fingerboard. I'm really interested in the MIM Player PJ Mustang, as it has a 9.5" radius. I'm thinking, it's probably just about perfect. A lot of reviews seem to agree. I wish they would release it as a US model, along with the Jaguar bass.
