  • In this video, we will put a Fender Mustang bass with Thomastik flatwounds up against a Fender Precision bass with D'Addario Chromes flatwounds. We will first hear both basses by themselves, then in the context of an instrumental track. We will then discuss the sonic differences.

I have a recent US P-bass and a JMJ Mustang bass. The JMJ has a Rosewood fingerboard, and the P-bass has maple. Maple definitely has more punch than the rosewood, so part of the difference you're hearing may be that. You're right that the longer scale is more harmonically rich, that's a known (and desired) feature of the long scale. That said, I generally prefer my short scale. (I also have a Bass VI and a short-scale multiscale headless Ibanez 5-string.)

I'm glad this one popped up in my recommendations, that track you were playing along with had some serious groove...is that pbass a "standard series"? Love that color combo

Thanks man! The Blue P bass is my friend/neighbour’s. It’s a MIM standard from 10-12 years ago. Was when you could still buy a Mexican fender for $650 cdn. But quality was more inconsistent then.
The track is from my ‘In Repair’ album.
      Thanks for watching!

This is exactly what I needed to decide if I should get a solidbody or hollowbody shortscale (after just watching your Eastwood Classic video). Since I already have a P-style bass with flatwounds, and the shortscale should be a different take on a vintage sound, I guess I'll be getting a nice hollowbody!

this actually makes me realise how similar my Vintage VJ74 jazz bass w/Rotosound flats sounds to a Mustang and P bass!

The Mustang/TIs all the way for me . . . check out Harley Benton's Mustangs . . . (Love your backing track!)

Thanks! I want to get my hands on a Harley Benton. Working on getting combined shipping with other stuff to save a few $

Mustang sounds like a wider range of tones off the P pickup. P sounds unshakably chill how no matter how articulate it's dialed.

For me, you can't beat playing flats with a pick for that great initial attack.

To be honest, I’ve wondered how those two would match up, especially with strings (flats) of my choice. Tone difference? Very, very minor. I have to ask, do you have a problem with your amp, or are you playing through an effects pedal because I noticed some distortion. Besides that, I’ll go with the short scale. To be honest there is absolutely no need for full scale. Just because Leo Fender started it that way doesn’t mean it’s necessary anymore. I’ve played on both, and a full scale bass is a dinosaur.

Good ears! There’s a bit of overdrive on the organ. It gets buried on the album mix, but it’s there to make it stick out in the mix. Thx for watching!

Ti Flats are my favourite, but unfortunately I have developed a nickel allergy and I can't use them anymore. Very annoying.

For me and my body, short scale mustang is way more comfortable and much easier to play.
