Just bought a Sterling Stingray short-scale bass. The fit, finish, sound, & playability far-exceeded my expectations. I'd love to hear these 2 in a side-by-side comparison. oNe LovE from NYC
I’m not really a big guy, nor am I considered short by any means, but I love short scale basses, they fit perfect for me. The only thing I’m concerned about is that I’m afraid they lack power and/or when you downtune them, they lack it. But whatever.
Yeah I totally get you! Yeah I keep mine in standard, the lower string tensions means it can't be tuned too low. Short scales are so fun. Which do you have??
@@JonnyDibble I have the Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Short Scale bass, I honestly LOVE it, I wanna install EMG Geezer Butler pj picks in it and stuff but I feel like it’s pointless because the truss rod is kinda funky, I turn and turn and it won’t move :/ idk if it’s faulty and if I should get a new bass
@@tonym7051 Oh nice! Ah that sucks. Depends if the neck is bowing and effecting your intonation. Not sure how much it would be to replace it but might be more expensive than the bass?? Wpuld be a shame to sell it though
I bought a Mustang quite a few years ago. It looked beautiful. Seafoam green. Maple neck. I g.d. hated that thing. Traded it straight up for a Tokai which I absolutely LOVE!
Interesting point, my friend! I have the same and arthritis. I usually play a double bass, a Ric, a Fender Jazz and Precision, but lesser times dictate that I turn to my Fender Mustang👍
I have one of these, in aged natural and I love it. I prefer the sound and feel of it with flatwound strings (Fenders give me the sound I want) and I don't use a pick. I do get a lot of usable tones out of it, but I'd like to be able to mix the two pickups like I can on my Jazz.
To all those like me who have toggle switch issues (cutting out/crackling etc)Try an anti oxidizer spray. It seams to have solved the problem. For now anyway at least. Don't use WD-40. I found the pickup sounds are pretty underwhelming and there's a few quality issues which is very disappointing considering the price. Try before you buy would be my advice. I would love a Reverend Dub King but they're pricey.
I've thought about getting a Mustang for a while but my budget would only stretch to the Squier version and I heard that they have even bigger quality issues and a propensity towards being neck heavy
Totally agree with you in your assessment of that bass. I got the black ebony version of that bass with matching headstock and... Yeah the toggle switch has been nothing but trouble since the very beginning (occasionally cutting out), the bridge pickup is noisy and weedy, fretjob is quite poor. There's even a thin hairline crack in the ebony fretboard because it was so bone dry when it left the factory... I oiled the board with some lemon oil which made it slightly better but... yeah fit and finish is really, really disappointing for the close to €700 I paid for it. It's a fun bass, the neck and scale is super confortable but if I had to do it again, I wouldn't get that bass. The fit, finish and fretjob are better on my Squier so my first "Real Fender" left a bit of a sour aftertaste. I actually wanted a sterling shortscale stingray but it had been out of stock for month at that point. Anyway, sorry for the long winded comment !
So weird that the QC seems to be all out with these?? Agree, all the modern squiers I've played have been better fit and finish wise. Definitely a fun bass though! Thanks for sharing and checking out the video ☺
It's a easy to fix the problem with the frets not a major deal. I think the Mexican Mustang base is superior to the American maid that's just my opinion you have that switch that's a major player on that bass. The only thing is the strings are not going through the body that's the way it should be. You get a warmer tone when I go they go through the body because the body becomes part of the sound it makes sense but I think it's dynamite base.
I bought two of these in 2020. The switch sucked. I hated the pickups. I ordered new pickguards with no switch and wired only the P pickup with Seymour quarter pound. The J is disconnected. Redressed the frets. Way better now.
Short scales are super cool!! Everything in King Gizzard is done with shorties and they just cut through so differently. My stupid two cents on this, is that the J pickup has SUCH low output. It's so bizarre. I wonder if that's a pickup thing or a placement thing? Also, speaking of bad fret jobs, I actually got my hand cut open playing a Gibson SG bass once. It's crazy that can happen at seemingly any price-point.
@@JonnyDibble Yeah, you said that in the video and looking back, it is way more up front in the PJ mode. At least the bass sounds good as a whole. I wonder how hard or feasible it would be to replace that switch with a blend.
When you get a chance it would be interesting to hear how you compare this and the new Harley Benton short-scale "mustang". I'm sure you'll be getting one and posting a video review.
@@JonnyDibble yeah the contemporary one the new roasted maple one looks cool but the rest of the finishes weren’t that great compared to the other jazz basses

Great for blending. It also has a tone control. It’s currently out of production, but there’s some used ones avail from time to time. Yes, it’s a Squier, but it still a fantastic ss bass.
I put a Hipshot Kickass on mine to replace the stock vintage style bridge because of a rattly saddle. Fit perfectly but I had to back the saddle quite a bit to get it to intonate properly. A thing to note is that Hipshot aren't kidding when they call that thing a high mass bridge ! Really felt a weigh difference when I first picked the bass up after installing it. So far the Kickass bridge and saddles have been rock solid, zero complaint of that front !
