Short-scale basses weren’t a new idea when Fender’s Mustang bass entered the scene in 1966, but stamp the Fender name on a new bass and the world will take notice. Since its introduction, Leo’s last original bass design while at Fender has been employed by bass heavies such as Bill Wyman, Tina Weymouth, and Trevor Bolder. Ignoring the “student model” label the Mustang carried in some circles, players embraced the design for its tone, comfort, and playability. The Mustang became a darling of the cool kids, likely also due in part to its slight flip of the bird to the norm.
Fast-forward to today and the introduction of Fender’s Mustang Bass PJ. The bass has retained the style, scale, attitude, and comfort of the original, but with a twist. In a Dr. Moreau-like way, the Mustang has been gifted with the mainstream tones of P and J basses as well. And suddenly, the hip becomes mainstream, yet still stays hip.
Out of the gate, the Mustang Bass PJ is a looker. Fender’s olympic white is always a classy aesthetic, and the mint scratchplate is a nice touch. For the traditional standard-scale player, the 30" scale will take a little getting used to since it might initially feel like a toy. I can assure you, however, this bass is no toy. The alder body has some beef to it, and unlike the models of the past geared more towards the beginner, this made-in-Mexico Mustang feels like it can run with its big P and J brothers. And speaking of its P and J brothers, what really gives the new Mustang its cool is the P/J pickup configuration (with a conventional 3-way switch running the show), instead of the small split-coil of the past.

But we had that entire set up and I have a P90 PJ Bass from 1989/1990 with the 3 position switch. It's light with great tone and sustain! Only ran for about 2 years and I have no idea why? I played bass 60 years and have a stack of bass. The P90 is my go to bass these days. The Mustang is a great bass and no back strain in a long session! Thanks for a Pro, review!

I really love this bass, although I have a few problems with it.
1: The output is incredibly low, like really really low.
2: The low end is awful on the stock pickups
3: There is quite a lot of buzz through the electronics
But other than that, as someone with presidential sized hands, it plays very well, very easily, and after putting in some new pickups, sounds amazing, you really can’t beat the price, got mine for $400 on Reverb.

@@savanaviolenta I can't get that range of tones he gets, nor have i heard them in other reviews. I actually am having more fun right now with my -$300 Gretsch short scale, but I don't play in a band so can't speak to that aspect. But I feel the tone is prettier and more variable in the Gretsch, Would love other opinions. Spastics such as myself cannot play bass, as 30″ is considered to be a short scale length. As a guitarist, I have found even the 24″ scale length of the Fender Offset Mustang 90 too long: I now play a 22½″ scale length Jackson JS1X Dinky Minion (which, one day, will get a Stetsbar).

I’m a guitar player from 7 YO in 1958 to now we’ll over 50 years later and still playing/practicing daily. The band I was in, in 1967 needed a bass player, so I bought a Hofner violin bass. After playin guitar for 9 years the switch to bass was smooth. My hands are average size and I’m around 5’8’
At the time didn’t realize the Hofner was a short scale bass, but as a lead singer the short scale fit a lead singers needs .
I have had a couple Jazz regular scale bass guitars that were great and never had difficulty playing and singing, but it’s when you switch back to a short scale where you then feel the advantage.
I now have a contemporary Hofner, a Gretsch short scale and a full scale Kramer DMZ4001. Still play a lot of six string as well.
I play a lot of 50’s, 60’s and some more current music as well. I’m not slap bass player and play in a more traditional pick style.
If you ever noticed Brian Wilson in his bass playing days, he is often shown holding and playing his P-bass in a more vertical style where it puts his left hand closer to to his eyes. Brian is about 6’3”. If you play and sing in a more horizontal style, it’s almost like having to look around the corner at your left hand or vice-versa for a lefty.
If you’re a bass player, you get-r-done in any case. If you’re a lead singer, short scale makes life easier. Hope this helps.

Actually, just the opposite. With regular Mustangs, you need to get medium scale strings. With this one, you get short scale strings which are easier to find. Of course, you can put regular strings on it, but it's harder to do.

Sorry... the other Mustang basses that Fender and Squier have been putting out are much cooler in my opinion... the P/J pickups just do not look right on this body. Why remove the classic Mustang bridge in favor of the chintzy regular fender bridge? Sorry.... this version just removed the mojo from a classic Fender bass. The Squier Jaguar Short Scale bass is the same thing with a much lower price tag.
I would say that Fender also missed out on an opportunity to make it a lot cooler and unique in the design of that bass as well but for that price, it's really hard to complain. Seriously though... how many P/J combo basses does Fender need in their lineup?

The pickups are different than the American P and J bass. Designed by Fender for their Mex line. Nut is synth bone...which means plastic. By saying it sounds like a P or J is misleading and borders on almost fraudulent. TELL PEOPLE.

    • @GregStraub42
      @GregStraub42 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You're a flaming idiot. No where does he claim that it is bone nut, nor does he claim its the same pup as the American made P or J bass. Not to mention the pups are the same design as a P and a J, in fact P pickup has become a industry term for a split single coil. But sure go off.
If people are that worried about it Fender and stores have all that info listed on their sites. "Fraudulent" What kind of pogo stick stupidity is that?
