Hi I’m Rick Shiels, welcome to my channel RickShielsPGAGolf. This TH-cam channel is designed to help you play better golf, also to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf club reviews, golf club unboxing, golf club news, golf club head to heads, and all about golf clubs.
I also want to make you play better golf by providing coaching video on all topics about golf, how to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
I will also help you lower your score by chipping better by stopping you duff and thin chips, pitch the ball closer and also create backspin. Also I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts!
On this channel I also make fun and entertaining golf content based on crazy and sometimes “gimmicky” golf clubs. I like to cut through the marketing hype about products and I like to give you the honest truth about golf equipment.

This very thing happened to me in my US Open qualifier! I was cruising around at 1 under par and then I hit a shank from the middle of the fairway on the 6th hole. I ended up making a 9 on that hole after 2 balls in the water. On the next hole I missed a SIX INCH PUTT for bogey. I lost my damned mind and all I could hit were shanks the rest of the round. I went from thinking I could medal to not even breaking 90. Now I have to petition the USGA to let me try again next year lmao.

The truth about you is that you now putt like "Blind" Peter Finch and your skill level has sunk to the point where you know you'd lose to Claire Hogel, Paris & both of the Shee Sisters. In fact, Peter Finch's former squeeze, Jazzy, could probably shank the daylights out of you. Maybe, Rick, it's time to take up shuffleboard & canasta.

Feel Ricks pain there and anyone who has a shank. As much as I’m a good ball striker it can happen the odd time to me too and my honest advice on your very next shot after a shank is address the golf ball by the heal and not the middle and it will make you in your mind think you need to get the path back to the middle so you’ll come inside on the downswing. Its only a temporary solution but let’s not forget how a shank can make you overthink the next shot which is why I believe if you hit one you’ll hit one after the other.

Rick, just wanted to let you know. I’ve been struggling with this a lot too and when you go back you open the face wide open almost and if your hands don’t flip in the most perfect way at the bottom, then there will be very inconsistent results. Especially in tournament or stressful conditions, flipping is not as a reliable way to swing than rotating and keeping the face square

Honestly Rick. It is enjoyable to watch. Not the bad golf part. But the fact that a crappy high teens handicapper like me does the same thing that the guy I watch to get tips from. Just like me, you get frustrated, you get rush(y) with your swings, you make odd decisions trying to make up for your bad ones, and last you play golf like a human being. I have learned one thing and well pretty much one thing only this year (picking golf back up in my mid 30's with a slew of injuries and issues). Sometimes mid round, you just have to stop take a couple breaths, stretch a few muscles and take your swing back to the basics with a very slow back swing. Not to mention the 80 tips I'm still trying to get down that I've gathered from your videos. Watching this type of video has done nothing but up my respect factor for you. Well they say you have to "speak it into existence" so... let's play a round, film and grab a brew together some time Rick! Also, like some scrub golfer / 300 sub TH-camr can speak, but I can just feel the pressure seeping through the screen... let it go, have fun! Cheers!

Golf at times can be very unforgiving and really give you a beating. If your not at your best at places like Conway they will chew you up and spit you out. Dust yourself off and move on. We all have days like this.

Could be my favorite episode in both seasons especially due to not skipping out on the par 3 content 🤣 I´ve used that and the shot from the bunker on the hole after the shank-party in my newest youtube highlight video. th-cam.com/video/sb9mtAYXbr8/w-d-xo.html

Getting 9 on the par 3 was less surprising than your duffed, decelerated chip shot. Shanks are the Devil's work. Duffed chip shots are yours; you can sort that out easily.

I played a really nice course last year. Like one of the fanciest courses I've been to in a very long time. I started at the range and everything I was hitting was straight. Get up to the first tee and I am literally hooking or slicing every shot. After about 12-14 holes, I just "f*** it" and gave up on trying to get a good score. After that, everything just seemed to go smoothly. I was my own worst enemy out there that day. Good luck on your next episode and I look forward to watching it.

Rick, you’re a Big Deal bud. J.R. Jones as the announcer? Kool! Just saying, from certain angles, Guy looks like Rory. 🤣 Seriously, not his swing, he just sometimes resembles Rors. Lovely golf course by the way.

20 years ago I was really excited to play in the invitational at my step fathers posh private course as his partner, he was captain at the time, I was off 16 or so. After a couple of decent holes I proceeded to shank every single shot with an iron in my hand (including wedges) and walked off the course after 18 holes a broken man. After the round my step dad walked straight into the pro shop and booked me lessons, I have rarely shanked the ball since...I feel your pain Rick, great video!

That was a classic episode! Commiserations for the round, but watching you have an uncharacteristically bad set of shots on that par 3 actually encouraged me no end. I do that sort of thing, well not that bad actually, all the time. Nice to know that even great golfers occasionally don't get it right. Looking forward to the next episode where you will definitely break 75.

I feel your pain Rick. I played at Royal Liverpool in the qualifying round for the English Amateur Strokeplay in the 1970s. Got to 16, which was the par 5 around the practice ground. Safe drive in the semi on the left.
    Then .....
Five (5) shanks onto the practice ground!
I see your 9 and raise with my 14!

    Rick,
The videos are great, all of your videos, even the shorts, top knotch entertainment. I'm going to give you some advice, even if you didn't ask, even though I'm not a Pro Golfer, even though you already know what I'm going to say, I'll comment anyways!
Sometimes it's best to not focus on your score, you're creating unnecessary pressure for yourself! Play each shot individually, focus on each shot, don't worry about the next shot until you must deal with it, even if you totally screwed this shot up, your next shot is another chance to make it right! Focusing on one shot at a time, everytime, you'll play better in the grand scheme! Don't worry about your score, or I need to get it in regulation to have a chance at birdie! Golf is golf, you never know when you're going to chip or pitch one into the hole & if not you get PAR and you start all over! Alleviate compound mistakes, recoup your focus & let the last shot go, don't be in a rush to get to the next hole when you haven't finished the one your on! Quit counting & play Golf! Keeping focused for all 18 holes together is very difficult, Focusing on the shot at hand is much less difficult!

    A couple of things Rick:
    12:38 “It’s plugged…”
NO IT MOST DEFINITELY IS NOT “PLUGGED”.
15:47 “The good news is the aspersion on those two shanks…”
    *DISPERSION

Folks like Rick, PIers and Andy, Shawn Clement, and Mr Short Game - have taught me everything I know. about playing golf.
So I went frame by frame on Rick's second tee shot on hole 13... and I know I've seen this advice before... but it looked like Rick flung the clubface open almost immediately on the takeaway, when you want the face to generally match spine angle by the time the club shaft is parallel to the ground... Maybe some wiggle room from person to person.
Now... in the midst of a round, I'm not gonna be that guy and start trying to fix swings... and I feel like I shouldn't even mention it. I have to think that Rick knows it. Or it could just be I'm way off base and it's some other technical breakdown happening.

Played my first round ever with our club pro. Shot a 45 on the front 9 with two in the water on one hole. Back nine, found 7 bunkers across 9 holes, missed every fairway and was out with a 55. 100. My average round is an 86. Needless to say….I went out the next Tues and was back on track with a front 9 42 in our mens league. The 100 was hard to swallow as it was both my worst round in almost a year… (took up golf in 2020 again after a 10 year hiatus)….and it was with the club pro…whom I wanted to show how much I had improved. He was such a class act and is someone I can call a friend now…he just shrugged it off and said ‘yeah, just had one of those rounds…’….thanks for showing all of us that even at your level, there will be ‘days like this’.

Rick, I know you get 1000's of keyboard golf teachers on here telling you what you're doing wrong etc etc, and here I am becoming one of them, so I apologize in advance. The one thing I've noticed, from all of your older, original videos (club reviews etc) to now, is that your tempo is incredibly quicker than it used to be. I don't know if you've done this on purpose, but it's just an observation. Here is an older example of when you had beautiful tempo. th-cam.com/video/OOhF1AZ1uCU/w-d-xo.html
I really love your content, and you've done amazing positive things for our game. Thank you.

Yesterday I played a tournament and it went TERRIBLE. Just terrible. Only a few decent shots.
It was a short one, just 9 holes, and we went for another round of 9 holes. Just to feel better. Those second nine I played like ten times better. We all did, all 4 players.
    So I felt better.
Now you show me your nine shots on par 3... And I feel like going for another 18 holes this week ;-) Thanks!

Possible video idea Rick, you've tested the slavenger golf set, the Lidl golf set but Argos has a 300quid set of Fazer clubs.
So what about an ultimate budget package set face off. Is the extra price of Fazer clubs worth it or are they overpriced for this market. Bring Matt fryer back if possible as he has also used the slavenger.
Same principle could apply higher up the price range best 1000 pound set,. Costco Callaway edge, stix, cobra XL or Taylor made rbz. I'm sure there is others that could fit into those categories

Big part of why I stopped playing golf that sort of madness!!!
Your people on the balcony watching comment - I played the Brabazon once, by far the best tee shot of our groups, absolute monster straight down the middle - then an utter joke all the way round, like I'd never seen a golf club before - possibly even some car park action on the 10th..... Then on the 18th a massive hook off the tee but somehow made the fairway, miles ahead of the rest of the group. 6 Iron onto the green and just rolled off into the bunker, played out to 6 foot and missed the par put by an inch. Anyone in the clubhouse would have thought I was a pro but it was without doubt the worst round of golf I had ever remember playing (probably).... It's a stupid game.....

I can't believe I hung in this long on this series but I'm done. The title of the series should be Drama Queen and Fan Boy Do Golf. The story is told, whether true or not I don't know, about a corporate exec, perhaps a CEO, who was playing golf with Arnold Palmer. The CEO would really act out in anger when he hit a bad golf shot... which was often. Finally Arnie is said to have told him, "Look, you're not good enough to get this angry over a bad shot." Granted Drama Queen here isn't throwing a fit in anger but dude is on a roller coaster of emotion constantly and just isn't good enough to put himself and everyone around him through the drama. His Fan Boy, Guy, seems steady and even tempored... probably a nice guy with whom to play a round of golf. Drama Queen, on the other hand, needs to practice more and get better before challenging courses he's just not good enough to beat and leave the drama at home.
