While traveling in Botswana I came across this newly born baby elephant struggling to get to its feet. There appeared to be a lot of confusion with various adults both female and males all trying to help. Eventually the calf gets to its feet and immediately starts to suckle. The herd then moved off into the bush with baby tottering along trying to keep up.

The things elephants do to protect and mask the smell of a new born are amazing. You can see the mom kicking up, and flinging dirt with her feet and trunk, one of the aunts dropped some dung by the near born, and mom used her urine to further wet the area where the baby was learning to take his/her first stand. They are the definition of self sufficient.
Nothing is more dangerous than a mother whose baby is threatened.

@@filthyan1mal588 Baby elephants, if they can be caught alone, are an easy feast for any of Africa's large predators. That's why the herd takes such precautions. And if a predator does sniff out the baby, they will usually be met by a circle of gray muscle & and white tusk.

0:52 At one point you can clearly see the Dad or a male gently using his front foot to help guide and nudge the baby to stand also. It is VERY subtle, almost like he uses his foot as a barrier so the baby can lean up against to stand, and that is extremely rare!

@@Indiana_samofficialyt It may have been a gentle nudge - also, it may not been the dad. Bull elephants, once they become adults, generally strike out on their own, only joining herds to mate with the females and then leave again.
