I agree to a point. Have you ever seen a video of men rushing together to lift a car off of a victim? There are countless examples of people doing extraordinary things together to save others. I think most people jump at the chance to be heroic. It's quite a contradiction to those who commit crimes against others.

Its so very obvious that they have great concern and affection/love for one another...not just the mother and calf but the entire herd was in there trying to help. I am continually amazed at how complicated and multifaceted the social life of elephants is! It appears they had a couple of plans, when one didn't work the mother told everyone to leave and she took a couple of steps away to make the calf really want to get out or he may be left there alone. When that didn't work she offered her leg for the calf to latch on to but that didn't work so back to another plan and the younger, lighter elephants got into the water to push out the calf. If the bigger elephant got into the water it would have been much harder for her to get out due to her size and weight. At the end of the day, the baby was rescued and the elephants and humans are all very relieved. I bet it slept good that night.

I love this . If you were to see this live with only a few people , it would change your life and the way you think about the little everyday things we all take for granted . I went on Safari in the Serangetti in 2007 and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life ! I highly recommend all humans make a trek to Africa to see what will once be gone if the planet stays on schedule with man eventually killing everything . The peaceful parts of Africa and the people there are one of the most magical places and on earth .

Does not seem to be a single comment about how smart the elephants were when they were putting their trunks in to check the depth and work out the best spot to get out before they herded the calf to it. Okay they tried to get him out the "conventional way" that elephants seem to do for a while first but then one thought to test the water and that's what got him out ultimately.

Elephants and cetaceans are extraordinary. Their entire lives revolve around family. Much more committed to family than humans are. And unlike humans, they're not driven by greed, violence, destruction, (no fiscal sickness here). Just devotion to family. Humans could learn much from these intelligent species.

It just tares me up inside when I watch how the whole heard (family group) work together to rescue the infant. Such compassion and true altruistic behaviour is far from common in other animals and there are many videos and eye-witness reports of the same thing being seen over and over again with Elephants...... and then it dawns on you. When a heard of Elephants are attacked by a bunch of murdering poachers with a weapons arsenal easily good enough to equip a small army, machine guns, semi-automatic rifles etc, for those animals that are allowed to live, the emotional and traumatic aftermath must surely be akin to what any humans experience in a massacre or war. Elephants truly do not forget, demonstrated by individuals meeting again after many decades apart and recognising each other instantly. And perhaps more incredible still they mourn their dead, even the dry bones of Elephants they did not know, the whole heard gently caressing the bones with their highly sensitive trunks. But I guess the poachers would just as easily massacre humans in the same way, they put no value on life, just on small pieces of paper that humanity has jointly come to see as more valuable than anything... until that is, the cold nozzle of the gun is being pressed against our own head. Then everything becomes very clear indeed.
