Ahh yes...Paul Davis! From Meridian Mississippi, my wife's hometown. Such a great singer, back when having talent came before your image. When describing Paul, I like to jokingly say that " he looked like a Hell's Angel but sang like a Real Angel ". You really should check out some of Paul's other hits: COOL NIGHT, SWEET LIFE, and 65 LOVE AFFAIR among others. He really was something special. RIP Paul.

It’s such a breath of fresh air to see the younger generation appreciating our music. I think you’re right in target that music influences us. You should listen to Roberta Flack’s THE FIRST TIME I SAW YOUR FACE. she’s just WOW.

This masterpiece stayed on the Billboards Hot 100 Charts for 40 weeks, 9 months and one week a record at the time. I agree with some of the other comments highlighting 65 Love Affair and Do Right, songs needing a listen. Paul left us at the age of 60, going way too soon, but his music lives on. RIP Paul.

Thoughtful and insightful commentary on this reaction video. More of this is needed, esp. on social media, for actual discussions to occur. Your parents should be proud of you for raising a kind, intelligent respectful young man. Liked, commented, and now subscribed. I look forward to seeing more. Your smile and positive outlook is refreshing and much needed in the world today. Thank you! ✌️💞🎶

Music changes WITH culture - they feed each other. As relationships degrade in the culture, the music will also reflect that - and especially words that disrespect women. Young men who haven't been raised in front of loving parents tend to learn their attitudes from other young men - and they are naturally users of women.

Man, yeah. I still have never called any woman a b***h, and can't even say the c**t word alone in private it's so disgusting. I'm still shocked when i hear others use words like that, even in endearing ways it seems.

    Great song.
You can attribute this song to a long lost lover.
If you have met someone after several years, and you loved them but they rejected you ultimately…it does not mean that you still still do not have feelings for them.
I was lucky to find the love of my life in medical school on Navy Scholarships.
Unfortunately she died on active duty Navy in 2014 and is buried with honors in Arlington National Cemetery.
I miss her tremendously to this day.
    Blessings.

Back in 1978 this song spent 40 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, establishing a new all time record at the time. It was eventually broken in 1982 when Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" spent 43 weeks on the chart. That record has been shattered many times over since then but back in those days 30 plus weeks was considered an amazing run for a single.

You are soooo right! I truly believe the music of the 60s thru 80s influenced each generation with the lyrics. We heard songs, of love, peace and yes drugs. If i ever heard my son speak to a woman the way they are sung about, I would slap his mouth!!!!!! And sadly the young women of today accept this because they are influenced by what they hear just like we did!✌❤

Another great song like this one, is by an artist named, Bertie Higgins, and it's called, Key Largo. He makes really great references to old movies in it but it's clever and romantic (yeah, I said it 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣) in a nostalgic sort of way. Always hits me in ""my feels" .. my heart. Paul Davis does this to me a lot.

Paul is a great singer! One of my favs! Omg, Ribbon in the sky! Love that song! We used to have a station in metro Detroit called Pillow talk. The dj I think his name was Alan Allman, would play Ribbon in the sky at the start of his show, then he would play romantic songs (this was around late 70's into the 80's) for hours while you would be with your special person, doing whatever! Love your show!

  • @beths999

Chod, I think your insight to music is spot on. It’s been bothering me for a long time that the SPIRIT and Heart of music has changed in the last few decades. Gone is the romantic and kind music I grew up with. It has now been replaced by music that feels dark and oppressive. The message used to be about true love and respect towards women and now it’s opposite of that. It’s changed our culture. I can’t listen to much music today, especially rap. I can’t fill my mind with the evil message a lot of it brings.

You're right! I often hear young people reacting to love songs from the 60s 70s and 80s and both young men and women say the same thing. Girls often say "it felt like he was talking to me, why can't a man talk to me like that?" and the guys say "why haven't I ever heard a man talk to a woman like that?" "I wish I could talk like that". Back in those days, yes men were macho but they were also able to be sensitive, hurt, and express themselves. It didn't make them less of a man. In fact, it made them more of a man. A real man, is not afraid to say who he is and what he feels. If you're not able to say the hard things whether its "Im sorry, "I love you", "Dont leave me" or express your pain, you're not a man. You're still a boy. I hope that by young people hearing these songs and listening to them, will learn how to say the hard things and feel the hard feels. Maybe, people will get along a little better because right now we could use it.

    • @daviec2021

Chod I think you can go on and on about it but I think that you are right in every way. Peoples VALUES changed and I think that's a huge part of it. I think that people thought that what was important such as money cars houses was important but in reality those things really are not important and I think that caused people to lose their away and fight for the wrong things. instead of feeling what is actually important family and love trust compassion all the great things in life.

I'll give you 3 guesses as to which was easier to take... and your first two guesses don't count! It's no wonder men either don't want to get in too deep or break it off first... It hurts less... for us. Hmm... :-|

I don't think it's the music as much as what you can get away with airing now days. Despite what many people feel, it was much more restrictive then.
More so though, it's because the standard of living has gone down in many ways. Yes, there have been advancements in technology and medicine, but as a whole people are making far less money. You use to be able to raise a family, own a car, house, have a yearly vacation and retirement plan, medical, send your kids to college, etc. all on one persons income. Now everyone is stressed and on edge just getting by. Kids are still encouraged to go to college but they end up with mountains of debt because colleges have become for profit. Basically, too much capitalism can be a bad thing. In the US, we have a mixed economy that has shifted too much to the right in favor of corporate share holders and away from prosperity for a large working class.

Music changed lyrically in th mid 90's to a harsher reality. 1960's - 80's we liked that fantasy romantic love, sprinkled with imagination. Now it's just WAP... which is fine, but where are the thought out lyrics?? How about wet butterfly wings or morning dew moistened rosebuds, just as lame examples. Sing to us and let us open up our imagination, don't just hit me in the head with a frying pan...boring.
