    Richard Manuel, a hurting man who really didn’t know how good he was and still is. His legacy will stay with us all- rest easy Rich, Rick and Levon.

    1969 listening to the Band over and over, I know there were so many elements that were so crucial to their unique identity, but over all the years since I've realised it was Richard's voice that made them sound like old-timers in touch with the earth and every human passion. I feel priveleged to have been able to listen to them and learn some of their songs to play with friends. Love to the memories of Richard, Robbie, Levon and Rick and much love and ongoing respect also to 'Brother' Garth who created such ethereal atmosphere on songs like Whispering Pines. Geniuses all.

    Clearly at a time when Manuel was clean, sober, and kicking ass. There were shows from years before this where he sounded 20 years older. God bless Richard Manuel. RIP.

      They got along with each other it was just Robbie they didn't along with.

    • @robertbruce6865
      @robertbruce6865 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It’s much more complicated than that.
      Having devoured every scrap of writing about these guys, I’d say that the issue was most definitely NOT Robbie; had it not BEEN for Robbie in the first place, there goes about 80% of the songs. The issue was drugs. Helm, Danko, and Manuel all had drug problems that stymied the creative development of The Band. Levon blamed the songwriting credit issue, but it’s fascinating how the quality of the records went down at roughly the time that their drug addictions were taking hold.
      As for the issue of songwriting credits, Band insiders like Ronnie Hawkins, John Simon, and Jonathan Taplin all have stated that Robbie was properly credited.
      There WAS no “feud”. “Feud” implies two parties. Robbie never slandered Levon the way that Levon slandered Robbie in his “autobiography”. Robbie has had nothing but kind things to say about Levon.

    • @danreilly2792
      @danreilly2792 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Robbie robertson destroyed the band that he started. He can write lyrics and little guitar? The band was much more than Robbie. They all created the sound

    • @robertbruce6865
      @robertbruce6865 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@danreilly2792 Again, it was drugs that destroyed The Band, not Robbie.
      The reason why Robbie wanted to shut things down...temporarily...was that he was concerned about the health of Richard and Rick and, to a smaller extent, Levon. All three were messing with Heroin. The 76 Tour that culminated in The Last Waltz was very hit and miss in terms of performance, and Richard got into a boating accident early on that took him out of action for a while.
      It was not designed to be a permanent ending, just a temporary hiatus to give everyone a chance to clean up and get healthy. They finished up “Islands” in the Studio, and just never got back together until 83, by which time Robbie had a lucrative career working for Scorsese.
      Robbie was actually trying to look out for them.

    • @robertbruce6865
      @robertbruce6865 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@danreilly2792 As to the “play a little guitar” comment, you may not be aware that he successfully fended off challenges...as a Teenager!...from both Fred Carter, Jr AND the legendary Roy Buchanan. Ronnie Hawkins loved to set up “duels” between his musicians and potential additions to The Hawks. Robbie was a teenager fending off not one, but two different guitar legends.
