Well, that bests any industry "war story" I was about to offer! The sheer TERROR of seeing GORT paralyzed me as a child. Having the strength to summon up memory cells and sync them with my quivering vocal cords to utter that alien set of instructions (to save all of mankind).... well, no can do! I LOVED TO muster my childish imagination to "place" myself in really scary movies!
Day the Earth Stood Still director was Robert Wise, my mentor. First time I saw him at his office at 315 South Beverly I looked at the pic of him and the robot and said "Gort, Klatuu Barada Nickto". Wise said I was the first to EVER say it right. Everyone forgets to get the robot's attention with "Gort". Kind of like us saying, Alexa".
"Klaatu Barada Nikto" is one of the most legendary quotes of all sci-fi film history! "The Day the Earth Stood Still" is one of my favorite sci-fi films of all time. 👍😀👍
Now, more than 70 years later, still the best robot ever. Still the most fearsome and imposing. Gives you chill bumps just to see him standing there inactive, but when his visor slowly retracts, whoa buddy! No troublesome joints to deal with, just flexible smart metal.

Still my favorite SyFy movie of all time! It is absolutely timeless! The interior of the ship is still not outdated after all of these years. No visible incandescent lighting. No pneumatic or analog instruments as used in many more recent films. The set designers of this movie were so far ahead of their time. Incredible! Then of course there is Gort. An ominous figure from the future that used an advanced seamless metal technology that could not be understood by the world's top scientist. Despite all of our advances in special effects, this movie remains unchallenged.

The set design speaks volumes by keeping the controls mysteriously "simple" with emphasis on lighting and sound effects, rather than clunky gadgets. I've been watching sci-fi for over 60 years now, and this ship is still one of the best ones out there- truly evocative of a HIGHLY advanced civilization!
I know my dad & his friends were freaks about this movie when they were young. They then starting using the term "Gort" when referring to large, bulky strong people, things etc.. "Holy crap - that football player is a GORT!" It fits!
Wow! times infinity. Thanks for making, and keeping alive, some of the greatest robots in movies. You should have said the classic line from "DTESS", when you turned off Gort. You know: "Gort, Klatuu, borada, nikto!" And then his eye shield shuts. That would have been cool!
Wonderful channel! As a little girl, I had a black metal robot, about one foot in height. His legs & feet were rectangular, & his torso & head were square. His chest was covered by a plastic panel, covering multi-coloured flashing lights. He was battery-operated, walked, & made whirring noises (as well as lighting up). I just loved him! My mother gave him away because she said he wasn't a girl's toy. I keep looking for one, but no luck. 😥

In the book, Gort was in control, not Klaatu. The premise of destroying humanity to save the Earth makes a lot more sense if the machines are in charge.
I love this film. So ahead of it’s time with its message of the destructiveness of war. I remember watching this film years ago and, as Gort emerged from the craft and the eerie music played, there was a huge clap of thunder outside. ‘Shiver’. Brilliant. And your Gort, Robbie and the Time Machine are fabulous. Very interesting video. Thank you and well done from England.
Russell Garcia, who wrote the musical score for the movie, told me in an email years ago that he created the "sound" of the machine as it traveled through time by using various musical instruments.

Just came across this video, excellent re-creation of Gort. I remember when I first ever saw the film, I couldn't get how you couldn't see any seams in the robot or the flying saucer, then of course there was the slit of light that seems to rove back and forth when the mask lifts up, always seemed sinister and even more so with the brilliant music. This film, along with War of the World's and The Time Machine, which I noticed you have, are my favourite three sci fi film's of all time.👍🇬🇧
I think KTRK 13 in Houston owned a print of this movie. It sure came up on the Three 'o Clock Million Dollar movie pretty often. Never knew why they never showed it on the Late Movie at 10:35. Maybe they knew the kids needed to see it.
Magnificent! I can’t imagine a more thrilling recreation short of giving it the destructo-ray he uses in the film. It takes a dyed-in-the-plutonium science fiction fan / monster kid to appreciate what you’ve done, and this one’s giving you a standing ovation. You know more about Gort than I’ll ever forget, I’m quite certain, so it’s for anyone else reading this that I’ll mention the name of the man who wore the Gort suits (plural, one seen only from the front and entered from the back, the other seen only from the back); Lock Martin, who went on to appear in two other genuine classics of ‘50s sf, Invaders from Mars and The Incredible Shrinking Man, and may play a yeti in the not quite classic The Snow Creature. I’m keen on recognizing anyone who sweats and bakes in a robot or monster suit, having some brief experience on stage. In closing I’ll ask if your Tobor and Time Machine are also recreations, although I expect to find you’ve given us videos on those beauties, and I can’t fathom Bob Burns letting the Time Machine slip away. Did I mention in any of this how much I enjoyed your video? Thanks for sharing it with us. All the best to you!
Yes I built the Time Machine from studio prints, Bob's original Time Machine has to many parts that have been replaced with new parts that are not quite right for me. Yes I have visited Bob and the Time machine, Bob even let me sit in the Machine. That is something he almost never let anyone do. The Tobor the great is 1 of two I built as I had the chance to work from the actual movie Tobor prop. Yes you will find videos on these props in my Robothut channel.

I should have refused such a profoundly generous offer, but the flesh is weak even when there are nearly 300 pounds of it. I don’t have to tell you how delicate those railings are, but with Bob and the late Richard Valley, editor of Scarlet Street magazine helping me, I ever so carefully managed and had the photo of a lifetime taken. I could never do more than aspire to such remarkable trust. The sort of kindness exemplified by Bob and Cathy Burns really comes from somewhere out of this world! Lastly (I don’t mean to draw you into a long chat) is it true that Tobor was displayed in front of some store for years and was eventually stolen?

Mike….You are so correct about the clarity and pure beauty of this Movie….Timeless is the word…..The Interior of the Aircraft is the best I have ever seen…..The musical score is understated but incredibly effective….
I'm afraid if we had many Gorts here on Earth to keep the peace, there wouldnt be very many people left on the planet. That's not necessarily a bad thing.
There were actually 3 fiberglass Gorts made, because 7ft tall Lock Martin was physically not strong enough to stay in the rubber Gort suit for more than around half an hour. 3 foam covered in fiberglass Gorts were made so that the support stands would be hidden during filming, IE if Gort was being filmed from the right side the support stands would be on the left side and so on and so on. Just found your channel, enjoying it greatly.
You almost got it right. There were 3 foam suits made for the reason's you gave. Were there support pannels inside the foam suits say the breast plate and maybe the back ? Probably, but nothing in the legs or crotch. So far short of being a fiberglass gort body, just a few suport pannels at the most. Poor old Lock Martin, that must have been so hot and heavy to be inside of. But only 1 fiberglass robot. I have pictures of the fiberglass gort being made in the studio prop shop. The fiberglass gort was use for a the mechanical head shoots and some pull back shots, you can always spot it as the arms are out the flying position.
Tilting the head first before the visor rises really adds to the effect, good thing he doesn't move. Well done by the way and thanks for going to all the effort.
Ohhh, I would LOVE to have one of those!!! I will be moving to Florida soon and building a house with a large movie room and he would look perfect in there!! Haha! Along with some other movie memorbilia!! This was my favorite sci fi movie!! Love sci fi movies from the 50's! "Earth vs the Flying Saucers", "Forbidden Planet", "Them", "The Thing (from another planet)" "The War of the Worlds", Just dont make movies like that anymore! I was always drawn to those old science fiction movies as a kid, growing up! And horror movies, too! Universal and Hammer studios! Classics!! Thanks for the video of Gort!!

Day the Earth Stood Still has always been one of my favorite films; I've probably watched it over 100 times. On my part I have built and painted several of the Billiken Gort Klaatu model kits; garage kits are a hobby of mine. Wonderful video, thanks for sharing!

Great job! Bernard Herrmann's original theremin music really helped to sell the initial fright and is indispensable for any Gort reproduction. I'd love to purchase a smaller Gort reproduction, (toy model) say 12" high or so. Were any ever made?
Yes there are resin models of Gort in that size. do a search for "Gort model" and you will find them. Monsters in motion might still make them as well.

I was not brought up on TV, and have no regrets. But I had to earn the privilege to watch one weekly program, and this movie in particular when it came on. I was so intrigued and mesmerized by this movie.
when gort came slowly walking up and the visor open, that is when the can of whoop ass was full open. he was a cosmic police force made to keep the peace in the universe. just one gort could kill all of mankind and reduce the planet to a burned out cinder. now that is scary as hell.
Wow! Cool! I found this, as I was searching for a clip from that iconic film where Gort was the silent (but deadly) 'co-star'. I see Robbie the Robot there as well! He was so cool in a number of films of that era (such as 'Forbidden Planet', with Leslie Nielsen, Walter Pidgeon and the lovely Anne Francis), and 'starred' in the TV show 'Lost In Space' with 'Timmy's mom' [June Lockhart], 'Zorro' [Guy Williams], Bill (Billy) Mumy and the rest of the cast when I was kid.
Oddly, the noted actor JOHNATHAN HARRIS brought far too much of a particular character (he had played before) to Irwin Allen's small-screen endeavor. A British Production company borrowed from the popular radio prequel of the movie, THE THIRD MAN. The CBS radio prequel gave us the principal antagonist HARRY LYME up to his old con tricks around the world, portrayed by the late ORSON WELLES. Now, think of a late 50s version for TV, in which Mr Lyme (portrayed by MICHAEL RENNEE) was NOT KILLED, and has gone kinda sorta legit. Yes, he still has his criminal connections across the globe, but his always nervous, somewhat stilted right-hand man is played by Harris. Compare the similarities in the demeanor of both DR ZACHARY SMITH, and Lyme's accountant/manservant
i have a picture of me with this guy at a shop in Providence Rhode Island who had one for me it was like being in the movie for second that when i saw it. the guy is awesome if you come here, he has the shop on North Main St. you may get a chance to buy something and get to see it. the dude in this shop is the coolest person! oh a time machine HG wells AND WE WERE GALACTIC CRIMINALS you are Blessed!

Im nearly 55 and this was /is still a milestone in sifi for me.at the time of being a kid it was all about planet of the apes and sinbad .this was before the star wars era. Gort was so impressive. Being watched and blown up etc.brilliant. bullets sounds being played backwards. Yes mate
Well obviously you were in the special effects department, of said movie company, and I especially enjoyed the technical aspect of how you take styrofoam and sand and chip out chunks and sculpt Gort. I am an artist and sculptor and was a musician on RCA records touring with all the legends of country music, about the time you were sculpting. Very interesting how smart people adapt and improvise to overcome any objective. Great work by the way, brilliant, like the brits say. I see the time machine, but I don’t think that’s actual size but I bet u made that too. Well enough gossiping, well done. 😎

EXACTLY what we need in todays world
There were actually 3 fiberglass Gorts made, because 7ft tall Lock Martin was physically not strong enough to stay in the rubber Gort suit for more than around half an hour.
3 foam covered in fiberglass Gorts were made so that the support stands would be hidden during filming, IE if Gort was being filmed from the right side the support stands would be on the left side and so on and so on.
Just found your channel, enjoying it greatly.
You almost got it right. There were 3 foam suits made for the reason's you gave. Were there support pannels inside the foam suits say the breast plate and maybe the back ? Probably, but nothing in the legs or crotch. So far short of being a fiberglass gort body, just a few suport pannels at the most. Poor old Lock Martin, that must have been so hot and heavy to be inside of.
But only 1 fiberglass robot. I have pictures of the fiberglass gort being made in the studio prop shop. The fiberglass gort was use for a the mechanical head shoots and some pull back shots, you can always spot it as the arms are out the flying position.
Tilting the head first before the visor rises really adds to the effect, good thing he doesn't move. Well done by the way and thanks for going to all the effort.

Ohhh, I would LOVE to have one of those!!! I will be moving to Florida soon and building a house with a large movie room and he would look perfect in there!! Haha! Along with some other movie memorbilia!! This was my favorite sci fi movie!! Love sci fi movies from the 50's! "Earth vs the Flying Saucers", "Forbidden Planet", "Them", "The Thing (from another planet)" "The War of the Worlds", Just dont make movies like that anymore! I was always drawn to those old science fiction movies as a kid, growing up! And horror movies, too! Universal and Hammer studios! Classics!! Thanks for the video of Gort!!

Wow! Incredible Gort replica; love the mechanics of the visor and the head!! Really impressive! Day the Earth Stood Still has always been one of my favorite films; I've probably watched it over 100 times. On my part I have built and painted several of the Billiken Gort Klaatu model kits; garage kits are a hobby of mine. Wonderful video, thanks for sharing!

Great job! Bernard Herrmann's original theremin music really helped to sell the initial fright and is indispensable for any Gort reproduction. I'd love to purchase a smaller Gort reproduction, (toy model) say 12" high or so. Were any ever made?
Yes there are resin models of Gort in that size. do a search for "Gort model" and you will find them. Monsters in motion might still make them as well.

I was not brought up on TV, and have no regrets. But I had to earn the privilege to watch one weekly program, and this movie in particular when it came on. I was so intrigued and mesmerized by this movie.
For me it was the 1960's The Time Machine. Once a year it would come on TV.

when gort came slowly walking up and the visor open, that is when the can of whoop ass was full open. he was a cosmic police force made to keep the peace in the universe. just one gort could kill all of mankind and reduce the planet to a burned out cinder. now that is scary as hell.
Wow! Cool! I found this, as I was searching for a clip from that iconic film where Gort was the silent (but deadly) 'co-star'.
I see Robbie the Robot there as well! He was so cool in a number of films of that era (such as 'Forbidden Planet', with Leslie Nielsen, Walter Pidgeon and the lovely Anne Francis), and 'starred' in the TV show 'Lost In Space' with 'Timmy's mom' [June Lockhart], 'Zorro' [Guy Williams], Bill (Billy) Mumy and the rest of the cast when I was kid.
Robby was in one "Lost in Space" episode, battling with "The Robot." Both were designed by the same guy.
Oddly, the noted actor JOHNATHAN HARRIS brought far too much of a particular character (he had played before) to Irwin
Allen's small-screen endeavor.
A British Production company borrowed from the popular radio prequel of the movie, THE THIRD MAN. The CBS radio prequel gave us the principal antagonist HARRY LYME up to his old con tricks around the world, portrayed by the late ORSON WELLES.
Now, think of a late 50s version for TV, in which Mr Lyme (portrayed by MICHAEL RENNEE) was NOT KILLED, and has gone kinda sorta legit. Yes, he still has his criminal connections across the globe, but his always nervous, somewhat stilted right-hand man is played by Harris.
Compare the similarities in the demeanor of both DR ZACHARY SMITH, and Lyme's accountant/manservant

Gort is my favorite movie or TV robot. Very simplistic, intimidating and futuristic.
Gort is the coolest robot ever, aided by the sounds of the thermin.

i have a picture of me with this guy at a shop in Providence Rhode Island who had one for me it was like being in the movie for second that when i saw it. the guy is awesome if you come here, he has the shop on North Main St. you may get a chance to buy something and get to see it. the dude in this shop is the coolest person! oh a time machine HG wells AND WE WERE GALACTIC CRIMINALS you are Blessed!

Im nearly 55 and this was /is still a milestone in sifi for me.at the time of being a kid it was all about planet of the apes and sinbad .this was before the star wars era. Gort was so impressive. Being watched and blown up etc.brilliant. bullets sounds being played backwards. Yes mate

Well obviously you were in the special effects department, of said movie company, and I especially enjoyed the technical aspect of how you take styrofoam and sand and chip out chunks and sculpt Gort. I am an artist and sculptor and was a musician on RCA records touring with all the legends of country music, about the time you were sculpting. Very interesting how smart people adapt and improvise to overcome any objective. Great work by the way, brilliant, like the brits say. I see the time machine, but I don’t think that’s actual size but I bet u made that too. Well enough gossiping, well done. 😎
The Time machine is actual size and built by me from the studio blue prints and visits with the actual prop.
