YO! So... Firstly - thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU to all those that support us, leave kind messages and say nice things of support - love you guys! BUT... Not sure what's going on here, I seem to see this in little waves - the negativity that is. I've removed a lot of comments regarding my kids - things like: "your kids are distracting", or opinions on how I should parent or what my kids should be doing instead of what they are pictured doing. My family will always come first and if I see ANYTHING negative about one of my kids, I will remove it. Period. Often they read these comments, along with my wife and extended family and I WILL NOT support the negativity that can sometimes purvey on social media. It does absolutely no good and is nothing but hurtful. I'm not the perfect parent, I can always improve - and same with my kids, they aren't perfect - but they're kids! We try hard, and I try to not get in the way of them having fun and being kids. If you don't like their involvement in the content, if you think they are a distraction - if you are NOT cracking up at their hilarity, then perhaps we aren't for you. I WANT for everyone to enjoy my content, I HOPE you like it and have fun and get inspired by it - BUT I do not do this for that purpose. I do this because I enjoy it and I LOVE creating these little memories for us to look back on. Actually, when I look back at my content and see gaping holes where my kids aren't involved as much, I feel a sense of failure for not getting them more involved. I don't want to look back at myself talking and driving around - I want to look back and remember these experiences I had with my family and watch how they reacted. It's true, they may not appreciate it as much as I do - but I'm darn near 40 and am JUST NOW appreciating it. I can't honestly tell you I appreciated any of this when I was their age. BUT, I do believe they will have these memories always and they will fondly look back on them as they grow older. My hope is to diversify their experiences - maybe they'll do this forever, maybe they'll never go camping again when they are older - but at least they will have the experiences to be able to make that decision on their own. Again, I appreciate all the kind words, I'm sorry if you think my kids are distracting - wait, no I'm NOT sorry - this is the content I want to produce, and it's published how I want it to be. If I didn't want it to be this way, I would do it differently. By the way, I will continue to remove senselessly negative comments as they are not constructive in any manner.
Completely agree with you Jason. (the negativity was weird, uncalled for & has no positive productive value - your commenters are usually so great it’s surprising & I guess a little reminder of the pitfalls of social media). Keep up the good work. Keep including the kids, it’s part of why my wife & kids will watch.
Thanks rain goat! It’s not consistent, but these little waves of negativity come up. Just felt the need to say something so others know i don’t put up with it.
I love the fact that you bring the kids and you don’t let them being kids distract you from your videos. I say that as a parent of 7 and 8yo boys who always fight...especially as we are dragging them through SE Asia for the next 2 weeks. Keep it up. Love that you bring the kids along. I can’t imagine our adventures with out ours.
There is a lot of negative reason not to share your life and family on TH-cam... basically there are a ton of crazy people out there who turn wholesome family content sour with rude disgusting comments! I know you can’t do anything about who sees your content and I think you are brave for allowing so many people into life and seeing your children. I watch to much ID channel to be so open lol!! But kudos to you Jason and other who try hard to provide great content to those of us who see it for what it’s intended and enjoy an evening of dinner and catching up on our latest videos from our fav channels!!! Keep up the good work and be safe out there!!
It's really great seeing a Father share an experience with the children it brings back such warm memories when my kids were young I used to take them in the mountains of Virginia and wait for a snow storm to go 4 wheeling then as they grew older taught them how to shoot and then hunting trips what adventures we had. Last year we lost our son Ssgt Robert E Scruggs an Army disabled veteran that fought in Iraq with injuries that years later took his life how we miss him so much he was 47 years young. I just purchased a 2010 4 Runner Trail model at 77 I doubt If I will ever use the off road capabilities since we live in Florida but enjoy watching the various 4 wheel options use for many off road situations now I know how to use If I ever get the chance. So thank you so much for sharing
Im finally an official owner of a 4runner and learnin all the gizmo and gadgets with how to handle off roads has been exciting. We're in CO (funny our anniversary was in Ouray) and your vid was just fantastic! Informative to! The kids made me homesick and miss all my brothers and sisters (8 of us in total 5 boys n 3 girls) We had some awesome road and camping trips! Kids just bring fun n life to everything! 😊 Thankx again for the vids!
I have a 4 runner with atrac, and I also live in southern Ontario with no mountains with lakes around, I’m so jealous of you mountain climbers with your fancy 4 runners lol, great video ! Beautiful scenery !
You are doing a great job! I take my kids with me on trips as well. Despite the challenges it is always worth it. I am sure they will grow to cherish this time with you.
I totally agree. I find your VLOGs inspiring in the sense that I realize how much your kids will treasure them. I want to do the same with my kids and even my Mom. When they're older the kids can look back and see what an adventurer their Grandma was. (BTW, just delete the negative kid comments - those have no place here)
If you have kids, you know the struggle is real. At least he got them to go along. I would have had to promise my kids ice cream and burgers at the end.
Fantastic video, the tutorial sections are new for you and they look great. As always the the music is stellar. Quite the video formula you have, just add content and it’s a winner. Well done Swellie
@@SwellRunner I agree. Particularly ATRAC. I'm not surprised people pull their foot off - it makes a racket and would scare people if they didn't know that's what it's supposed to sound like. I encourage people to use it a little when they don't strictly have to in order to get used to it so it doesn't make them nervous when it counts.
Hi Jason, been following your videos and love the content and storytelling you are doing. As a father myself, keep doing what you're doing and as you said, you are creating everlasting memories of your adventures together with your kids. For all the negative folks out there, just ignore and remove their comments if possible or block them. Keep doing what you have been doing, I find your VLOGs both entertaining and informative, to say the least! Like the adventures you take all of us along, you and others out there doing similar VLOGs introduce great recreational locations and I'm looking forward to following some of your footprints from your trips. -Eddie V.
Sorry people are being mean. I live to watch these kind of videos because I am too chicken to go places like this myself and I even have a 4Runner. I love it but I don't like heights. Anyway keep up the videos. Thanks for your hard work to put these videos out.
Curious…..do you leave A-trac on for extended periods of time? Or do you turn it on, use it, then turn it off and so on? Never really needed to do that or lock the diff yet. Want to know more about them. Thanks brotha.
Got 3 little monsters...I mean kids my self, going to McDonald’s it’s an epic battle, one hand on the wheel and the other fighting on the back trying to keep peace, I know it’s hard at times and some other times...well it gets worse, but I share your view nothing gets in between my kids and a papa bear. Respect ✊
Your son is the best part of this video. I'm the father of 3 boys and I see nothing wrong with this behavior. The only distractors are the negative comments here. Keep up the good work!
I have to disagree. While his behavior is indeed normal there's no way it can be considered not distracting. It *literally* distracts you from the focus and narration of the video. Just because a child is a child doesn't mean that every action they perform is correct. This worship of children as infallible is silly. I think the video is great and it's fun to see that somebody can take their kids out with them and they all have fun, it's inspiring. However, that boy made me cringe more than once and was almost immediately annoying. It could have been a parrot or a Yorkie or a cousin with a drawl, it would have been annoying. That's the kind of feedback somebody with a TH-cam channel should be open to receiving and I hope this one is.
Dillon Cain I can see your point and I should say that I also found it distracting, but not necessarily in a bad way. I found it quite endearing how at certain moments Jason started to show frustration but then almost immediately was able to hold his emotion and continue on. How many times as fathers have we had to do this with our boys infantile behavior? His boy (likely) didn’t know that what they were filming at the time would be watched again and again by thousands of individuals, each with a different perspective and view of proper children’s behavior, or trying to concentrate on and learn some of the finer points of overlanding - he was sitting in front of a camera and was able to see himself make odd faces and noises. That is normal boy behavior. If Jason’s viewers find that offensive, you’re right he should be offered that opinion. But when it comes to including his children in future clips this viewer hopes he doesn’t edit that stuff out. It’s real and honest, and that is one thing I especially like about his content.
Good vids Jason. I can relate with you in many ways especially at 10:55 when the kiddos went back to the 4Runner. Don’t worry kids loose interest in my cool findings too.
I hear you Jesse. Same thing here. Trips always involve making up screen time rules on the fly. "Okay, on the highway. Not on the dirt road - oh, okay, on this dirt road since it's long & flat" Argh!
Another great video Jason and a fine explanation of the proper use of ATRAC and how useful it can be if properly engaged. As far as your son and some of the other comments? Well, I think it is great that your kids are part of the videos and for his 'distracting' shenanigans, it is a far cry from the early vids where it seemed he didn't want to even participate at all. I feel he has come a long way and if that is his contribution, then so be it. I think it's fun ;) PS: I think it also should be controlled! LOL
I have a SR5 Premium and used my ATRAC every time I'm on a sticky situations and off course a good driving will help. I wish that Toyota put lockers on the SR5 Premium. Also, have friends that never used their crawl control, most used is ATRAC and lockers. Mine are ATRAC and WINCH😂
I used to have 2015 SR5 premium and literally use a-track all the time and it did the job all time, I have a 2019 TRD off-road and literally barely use the locker but I do use the crawl control with a-track
@@itayrozenstein6989 I'm curious where you use the crawl control. I agree A-Trac virtually eliminates the need for lockers but I find it hard to tell where crawl control will help me, I kind of ignore it. Open to pointers.
@@steveo1240 well, I'll be honest first I was wanting that TRD Off road but I cant afford paying 50k and I dont want a used one because of some personal preferences. Like you say, right now I'm fine without the lockers but it's on my list in the near future. I mean 9 PSI front and 12 at the rear I can go pretty much anywhere except climbing the wall. Lol...
Leave his kids out of your comments. They seem hateful to Jason and his family. Kids will be kids. If you don't like seeing them then don't watch his videos.
I really want a New 4runner since I started out with a 85 4runner years ago driving but these new IFS systems make me keep the Jeep because of the solid axles with articulation seems to work better. I did this trail not that long ago in a 3" lifted Cherokee and I didn't even need to use the lockers. 2wd most of way then 4low when neededl then see 4runners get caught on what looks like easy obstacles. I wish I could rent a 4runner to try it before I buy.
Great filming and editing really give ya props for all the time as ik it takes time to do all this. Rofl ur boy is a little too active but I really enjoyed first time watching this video u have a nice vibe and I feel like u r doing a great job as a father but when going outdoors u should take a way electronics so they can appreciate and pay attention to the things they hardly get to see. Who knows maybe in the next 30+ years there won't be anymore lakes or mountains itll just be all construction and buildings. Keep up ur content
@jason - Doesn't look like your rear diff locked at 5:18. with the rear locked, the driver's side tire can't turn unless the passenger side is turning (so if the driver's side was turning, the passenger side wasn't). Looks like the passenger side had traction, so you should have moved forward.
It was locked my friend. They were all spinning... It was actually a pretty steep hill there, doesn't show well in the video, but it'll all spin when gravity is working against you and traction is an issue.
I think the optical illusion here is that the rear is locked and turning at a rotational speed x while the front tire without traction is turning twice that speed when it looses traction and the other tire isn't turning...because that's how spider gears in a differential work. Might could have tried to find that sweet spot ATRAC rpm and got the front more involved if it was a situation where that was the only line, but in this case the "hey, let's move over 6 inches" approach was perfect.
Thanks Jesse! I don’t really use crawl control anymore. Haven’t used it in ages. Only time I’ll use it is if I want to stay at a consistent slow speed on a trail and I’m tired of modulating gas/brake.
Hey Jason, I found you researching 4Runners, and like your videos more and more. Only thing I would recommend is a gimbal for some of the hand held stuff. Some of it's a little shaky.
I over all liked the video, however did you replace the rocks in the cairn that were knocked down. I was taught leave no trace...if you move something you put it back.
Great content as always, I can't wait to one day get out there and run all these trails. I do have a question regarding your drone footage. Does the drone have a follow feature or do you have your kids fly it to get those cool side/follow shots? Thanks in advance if you see this.
I never like how those shots turn out. I usually just frame my shot, and fly in one direction slowly with one hand while I drive with the other. It limits what I can do and sometimes results on losing the shot because... well driving comes first. And obviously I can’t monitor the shot either. But it’s more reliable than trusting the ai to get the shot.
I was about to ask how to get the waypoints from your camping spots, but you answered it in the video, thankfully. Are the camping areas you typically pick ground tent friendly?
This is a common misconception I hear often - ATRAC, lockers, 4WD - they’re all tools to help you get through varying terrain. There can always be exceptions regarding terrain that could render these “tools” useless. BUT, with an understanding on how they work, what their purpose is, and practice using them in real environments, you can usually stay out of trouble.
Great demonstration! I rented a tacoma with locker and atrac a while back an was confused at what all the different buttons did an what benefit each mode has(after getting stuck of course)
Haha at the time you were talking to those people I thought for a second you were going to take that first right straight up the mountain. I was like man Jason has a big pair of you know what...
It's amazing, as he's talkin on camera I'm looking behind him at the views and his two children had their faces glued to the screens other tablets or computers or whatever it is they're using , I feel so bad for the younger generation they're just missing out on everything that's beautiful in this country.
Honestly when I was a kid back in the 80's I did enjoy camping, offroading, etc with my dad. However, let's be honest, a lot of that can be boring for a kid. My face was constantly buried in a comic or book on these trips while dad handled the off roading and what not.
Sooooo you have to gas it more for a track to work. Can't have it engage if the wheels aren't slipping. Also any 3rd gen tacoma has "A track" in 4 low. But like I said you have to Gass it. How the he'll do you want it to apply the brakes to the spinning wheel if it's not spinning? It's not as sensitive as crawl control
I own a 2013 TRD Sport Tacoma....does my truck have ATRAC? I know when I am in 4lo it says Auot LSD and TRACTION CONTROL off. Only TRD OFF ROAD has theses advanced traction assist systems right?
I have a 2008 Tundra 4WD and it has ATRAC and Auto LSD. I don't know when Toyota started using ATRAC. (Traction Control IS ATRAC BTW) Auto LSD only works in 2WD. There is a switch to turn off traction control if you want to power through otherwise it will limit your throttle.
I'm a recent subscriber and I love your videos and your kids keep them with you I seem as your side kick :) especially your Son he's my favorite making faces while you talk but I think he's into it and your daughter's cool kinda of remind me of my daughter when she was her age, anyway looking forward to your next adventure.
Hey Jason, lots of butt hurt people on here about your kid. Kids will be kids and I think it’s great what you do. Just ignore them man and keep doing what you’re doing. Wish I could say my kids are perfect. One day they’ll look back and say you’re an awesome Dad and thank you for the time you spend with them.
Love your page, always informative, makes me want to upgrade my ‘18T4R-ORP every time I watch your posts. However it would be an expense I would rarely justify with my limited time out in the deserts of CA and salt flats of Bonneville. BTW: I’d love to see you travel to El Mirage Dry Lake in the Mojave for the off-road park and land speed racing (racing starts in mid May) Question, finally, can you make a vlog that shows us how much work it takes to film all your travels? We see a bit of it, but to see the stops and camera placements, and all that while you travel would be quite interesting. As well as the Editing process you go thru. Take care, and hope to see more in 2019! Thanks

Land Rover pioneered this technology in the late 90’s. Brake actuated traction control. Worked then and still works now.

12:02 Can't pay attention to anything you're saying, because I can't stop laughing at your kids! Ours are just as silly and we love it! ha ha
Leave his kids out of your comments. They seem hateful to Jason and his family. Kids will be kids. If you don't like seeing them then don't watch his videos.
That kid is annoying AF...I started watching and I couldn't hang 1 minute thanks to spawn...
Great video Jason our family loves them and you shouldn’t change a thing.
Great stuff, thx for sharing. Self Expression is confidence! Got my vote 🤙
Yankee Boy Basin is my favorite place I've taken my truck to in CO. Beautiful area!
More camera angles needed :-)
I think the optical illusion here is that the rear is locked and turning at a rotational speed x while the front tire without traction is turning twice that speed when it looses traction and the other tire isn't turning...because that's how spider gears in a differential work. Might could have tried to find that sweet spot ATRAC rpm and got the front more involved if it was a situation where that was the only line, but in this case the "hey, let's move over 6 inches" approach was perfect.
Tim Temple why doesn’t the 4runner come with a front locker option???
@@globalmobile017 Cost. 99% of buyers don't need it. 99% of the situation don't require it.
5:14 is an awesome view :0
Now do you prefer crawl control or you still like atrac? Geaat video my friend
Thanks Jesse! I don’t really use crawl control anymore. Haven’t used it in ages. Only time I’ll use it is if I want to stay at a consistent slow speed on a trail and I’m tired of modulating gas/brake.
Jason Koertge ok was just curious on your thoughts thanks for answering my question 👍
thats Colorado for you two days ago it was 60 and nice went up Cheyenne next day blizzard
Is your 4-runner lifted or stock (9.6” clearance)
kids- "dad's out there talking his camera again"
Always
@@SwellRunner Love it! 😂
As one who has gotten into that particular lake, you're right (no pun) - it is freezing. Also, leeches.
Oof!
The editing and the music was nice!
What was the first year they put A-TRAC in 4Runners? And Forget lockers!
You have 3inch front and 2inch rear lift correct?
Hey Jason, I found you researching 4Runners, and like your videos more and more. Only thing I would recommend is a gimbal for some of the hand held stuff. Some of it's a little shaky.
Thanks!! I’d love to use a gimbal, but it would just add way too much more time to setting up when running and gunning.
put the fj cruiser camera i think cbi sell an extension for the fj steel bumper which should bolt right on
I over all liked the video, however did you replace the rocks in the cairn that were knocked down. I was taught leave no trace...if you move something you put it back.
Great job as always Jason. Adventure on!!
Didn't see another vehicle. I never go remote without a backup just in case someone gets broke or stuck. Especially with kids.
How long do you run in 4hi vs 4lo on a trip like this? Are you constantly switching or just staying in 4lo the entire time?
Once I put it in 4 lo, I leave it there until I need to hit speeds of 15-20 for a while.
Great video showing the Offroad goodies in the 4Runner don’t always work.
Yes, driver skill is more important
You're right about high alpine lakes. I think it's because it's surreal. Like a Sci Fi landscape on an impossible planet. Maybe you're a Scorpio?
Love those drone shots!!!
I wish I was good at filming and editing as you. Seems fun.
I don't know how you travel with those kids and keep your Runner so clean! I have two girls and it's a constant mess - can't keep up with them!
Hahahaha. You have no idea how messy it gets. It’s always such a disaster!! But my husky floor mats come right out and a vacuum fixed everything!
I have a 4runner SR5. Would I be in L4 this whole time?
I asked the same thing
It's A-Trac automatically engaged in 4 low?
@2:22, kids literally give zero effs about being outdoors. :(
Great demonstration!
Hahaha.
Great video and great editing. Subbed!
Hey Jason, Long time subscriber, love the vids, but I always notice that you dont turn your head.. Did you have a neck injury at one point?
Very informative video, and that's how you do it.
Great video.....but your passenger stole the show with the faces. Lol. Keep making vids and I'll keep watching.
Seems like something my kids would do too :) They are probably dying to create their own content ;)
Did anyone else notice the clouds that they changed sense of direction at 4:20 🧐
It is absolutely amazing to see the beauty in nature, reveals the vastness of God!
Kids get nothing out of the trip glued to notepads.
Bucket list! Can you recommend a campground I can use as a basecamp?
I own a 2013 TRD Sport Tacoma....does my truck have ATRAC? I know when I am in 4lo it says Auot LSD and TRACTION CONTROL off. Only TRD OFF ROAD has theses advanced traction assist systems right?
Mike Foehr pretty sure you don’t have it
I have a 2008 Tundra 4WD and it has ATRAC and Auto LSD. I don't know when Toyota started using ATRAC. (Traction Control IS ATRAC BTW) Auto LSD only works in 2WD. There is a switch to turn off traction control if you want to power through otherwise it will limit your throttle.
I always enjoy the videos so much, and the reality of domestication that comes with kids lol. You're a great dad👍🙂👍
Great vid as always, but what is with the clouds going back and forth at 4:21 ??
what do you edit your videos with?
If ATRC isn't a cure all how have I been able to make it through uneven terrain in my 100 series without a rear locker?
What an awesome video
You were able to do yankee in December!? Or is that when you posted the vid?
great vid ur boy stole the show what camera do u use?
I'm a recent subscriber and I love your videos and your kids keep them with you I seem as your side kick :) especially your Son he's my favorite making faces while you talk but I think he's into it and your daughter's cool kinda of remind me of my daughter when she was her age, anyway looking forward to your next adventure.
What's the song at the beginning of the video???!!!
Days after purchasing my new 4runner I drove into my field to play with the atrac. Haven't had a chance, it need, to use in real world yet.
I love A-TRAC more difficult when u have a manual though.
The kids are cracking me up!
What’s your car trim?
Binge watching again, NEW UPLOAD!! wooooo!!
haha thanks Bern!
How does ATRAC differ from 4lo?
Incredible views and a nice cap to a great trip. Fun to see the A Trac in action.
A great reason to buy a Toyota 4Runner.
What time of year was this? Thanks
October.
Thanks
