  • In this video, I have compiled every main way I know to exploit and decode combination dial locks. They might have different shaped shackles or more or less dials, but if you know all these techniques and have lost your code, you have a very good chance of finding one that works for you. Think I’ve missed a technique? Let me know in the comments!
Sascha Schneider made these time stamps for us. Thanks!:

It's an incredibly addictive feeling/hobby. When I got back into the hobby a couple of weeks ago, me and the missus were on a 5 hours drive to see family, so I bought a couple locks to tinker with on the way using my new pick set. I ended up asking her to find a Target or Walmart an hour in because I wanted new locks due to having popped the ones I had quite easily many times already. Enjoy!

Interesting video. I don't run into many combination locks here, last one was a really high end briefcase with a terrible lock on it. I was able to decode it just by sight. Was happy and sad at the same time. Found it in an illegally dumped pile of garbage on one of my clients properties. Happy because the case had identifying documents as to who did it. Sad because it was far too easy to open. Lol

On the Abus 165/40mI also noticed that when the wheels are not in a true gate, if you hold shackle tension and rotate up a half turn and release, these is no spring and the dial stays in place - conversely, the true gate causes the dial to spring back to the previous position. A little tricky to explain so I might record an episode at some point to demonstrate the idea.

What a great locksport video! Placing all of the various techniques into a single video is not only useful from an organizational sense, it also provides the context needed to gain a more general understanding of the combination padlock design and resulting decoding strategy. Each of the specific techniques serves as another example of the general approach to decoding combination padlocks. The pedagogy is excellent. The student is shown different techniques for different locks and leaves with a valuable understanding of the entire class of combination padlocks and will thus be well prepared to decode other locks of this class. This is master level locksport, far above the typical "How to bypass a 175 combination padlock" videos.

I have another technique to distinguish true and false gates and I find it quicker and easier. Use a feeler guage down the side of the wheel you decode and pull shackle really hard. In a true gate no matter how hard you try to open it, the feeler guage won't be pinched and will remain sliding loose in the gap.

On the masterlock that opens to have a set of keys inside and fits on a doorknob, that's an older real estate type lock and notoriously easy to open. I saw anothr viideo and all you need is a pair of sissors, an empty soda can and about ten minutes time. Probably a store brand or cheaper brand of soda will work better as the metal is thinner.
You simply make a shim, cut it with scissors until it's narrow enough, if you want to get fancy, bend the end over to make a nice little handle and put it to the left of the wheel. Push a bit of resistance going down. You simply have to push it and let it sit. When you turn the wheel and find the flat spot, it will drop. You can confirm by moving the wheel to another number and it goes up.
On this masterlock, you generally have the right combination but not the right set of numbers. Three is usually the amount of clicks you need to move to get it to open. I recommend after finding these sweet spots to move each dial one number each at a time. So, 0000, move to 1111. It should open after doing this three times. If you get it backwards, maybe seven.
I am not a lock picker, a thief or have much knowledge on this other than a contractor installed this on my door to let the workers in. Mistake one is they set the code to the four number address. Mistake number two, most of their very talented crew from hanging around Home Depot knows this. It's not like hanging the set of keys on a nail outside the door. To a thieft it's hanging a sign of here's the keys and you can get to them within two to four minutes. Absolutely crazy that this contractor uses this cheap lock. Guess who has to piick up the pieces if you get robbed?

The tip about if it "wiggles" alot really helped me, going from top to bottom i tried to find the one that wiggled the most. The top one always wiggled so i knew that was a real gate, the second one also wiggled, the third one didnt, the fourth one did. Then i changed so the thrid one wiggled, but then the fourth one didnt wiggle, but when i changed the number so that started wiggling again it opened lol.

Abus have a cool defence that requires a different technique. Ironically, mine got stolen when the cable got cut, along with my crap bike. They put slopes on the false gates. Squire do very good one too.

    • @LockNoob
      @LockNoob  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Cool, will have to look out for that. and yeah, cutting cables seems to be one of the most common things the crims do sadly.

So your lock was a Squire? I'm interested in getting one that doesn't give as much feedback picking.

I have to open a letterbox inbuilt combo lock. It felt awkward because I can only use a fingerprint type feel and not grasp the lock with full hands. Alas, I will persist with your tips. Thanks Mr.

Having false gates is definitely a must on these locks.

    • @LockNoob

Agreed. I have some super cheap locks that are far harder to decode due to false gates than much more expensive name brands that don't

Great video! Now I wish I actually had combination locks to try out those methods on ;) one request, though: could you maybe add a list of timestamps and name of the methods to the video's description? This would add named points to the video's timeline that could be used for navigation

    • @LockNoob

Great suggestion! If you do this i'll pin the comment

      There you go:
      0:16 Overview
0:42 How a combination padlock works
      3:49 The '175' Bypass
      4:48 Flat-Spot Feeling
      5:57 Notched Pull Decoding
      6:46 Shackle Pull 1
      8:25 Shackle Pull 2
      9:52 Feeling False Gates
      13:03 'Reverse' Decoding
      14:59 Shackle Push
      15:40 Down-Shackle Decoding
      16:43 Conclusion
But instead of pinning my post I suggest you copy it into the video's description, that will show up as named notches on the timeline - at least that's how I understand things, give that I don't publish videos and therefore have no experience

After seeing this video and now that I think about it, combination locks and disc detainer locks work mostly on the same principle, the difference is that the first let you operate from the outside while the other let you work from the inside to open it. That make me wonder how the other type of locks would work with the same inside out idea

    • @LockNoob

Great video, nice and clear instructions. But why do you have must lock on codes like 0000? This will look better and more trusting if you just reset the lock to random code

I had a Cocraft 300C with four wheels that was impossible to feel the difference from false gate and true gate. My only way was to find all the false gates in each position and then brute force from first possible combination to all combinations. In my case the false gates included true was odd numbers on wheel 1, even on 2 and 3 and odd on forth wheel. This gave me possible numbers 13579, 24680, 24680 and 13579 on last wheel. Then I started with first digit on each wheel 1221, next 1223, 1225, 1227, 1229 and then 1241 and so on. The number of combinations was by this method was reduced from 10000 to only 625 combinations. I was lucky and lock opened at 3001. 😀

You just changed how i view these combination locks (in terms of mechanics). Literally an eye opening video. (Although the pink bike lock was probably more 'eye searing' instead. 😉) Also, the bobby pin technique was new for me. Another great video.
As far as security is concerned: I like the small guys for things like backpacks: They don't provide actual security but they'd force an 'attacker' to fiddle with them. So noone would just open the zippers and remove stuff from one of my backpacks unnoticed while walking behind me. Other than that i consider them to be more toys rather than anything else (or similar to a sign saying 'Just leave my stuff alone' in some rare cases).

I think he's kind of locks are best used for gym locker. Thinking take a bit of time to decode and a locker room is a high-traffic area so you just need something to deter someone from simply opening the locker. But I don't want to have a key on me in the gym for obvious reasons
