How to Open a Key Safe WITHOUT the Code - Easy Method!

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 17 ธ.ค. 2024
- In this video, I demonstrate how to open a key safe even if you don't know the combination. No special tools are needed, and this method can also be applied to other types of combination locks.
Please note, this video is for educational purposes only and is not meant to encourage misuse. Its primary aim is to raise awareness about the vulnerabilities of these products and highlight their potential security risks.

Brilliant 🤣
I enjoy these very humorous replies to comments. 😂

Most people in remote locations don't lock doors anyway. Just let yourself in and make a cup of tea

@@nonegiven9579 the Supra C500 seems a better option, but I haven't tested it yet. There is however, always going to be a risk accociated with storing a key in a box. I am also currently testing another box, which I hope to upload in the coming weeks
I’ve got my hatchet. Mr anonymous, Devon 😅
Thanks for showing people how to break into my house! Might as well just leave key under door mat now !
It might be safer, a key safe advertises exactly where the key is.
Not if fitted out of sight, which is how i.fit them.
Your well come
Most seasoned burglars will know this anyway or have other methods to get in ,personally I wouldn't use a key safe.
It's better to know the break-in issue here than not know it. That way, you can take better precautions such as ensuring the key-safe is out of obvious site, i.e; right by the front door.
Thank you, Piklok! The procedure worked just as you said. I purchased a brand-new key safe for just .50 cents at a yard sale. The previous owner lost the combination to it. I watched your tutorial, and now I have a new working key safe. Greetings from México.
That's fantastic, I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know. Good evening for the UK!
You have a working key safe that isn’t safe (as this video shows). 😂
@karagi101It should be called a key unsafe, really.
Wir alle wissen dein Safe zu öffnen 😂😂😂
@hugolutsch2687 Ich hoffe, dass sonst niemand in Mexiko dieses Video schaut.
Thank you for helping me open my key box I accidentally locked myself out of; as a real estate agent, I was shocked to see how easy these are to hack, and glad to know my broker requires Supra boxes instead, for listings. These might be a hide a key option for contractors only in the future. Hide the key box too, if using these, everyone!
Really happy it helped and thank you for taking the time to tell me. I wish more people would realise how poor these boxes are. Quite coincidentally, I bought a Supra C500 earlier today. They're a much better option. I believe they are decodable, but it takes a lot more time and experience to do.
I hope your comment is real. We have one of these lock boxes, and my grandson is tired of trying to figure it out by recording his attempts. I was concerned the video may just be a gag.
@angelam6364 it's not just a gag. It prevented a family from having to sleep outside a couple of weeks ago, when the Airbnb owner forgot to give them the code.👍
I'm happy to report my grandson now has access to a lock box. He put a flashlight, handcuff key, and his last suction cup nerf bullet. Then he was so impressed he reset the code for his Gigi to figure out aGain🫥🤷🤭. I love the researchers in our youths. 🙃
@@angelam6364Did your grandson work it out in the end?
Don't criticise the video author. He has demonstrated a total vulnerability, which I didn't know I had. Thank you.
You're welcome. Thanks for commenting, I appreciate it. 👍
I was so frustrated at first, cause it felt like it worked, but I didn't watch until the end, where you had to turn it 180 degrees after you found the correct numbers. Thanks for the simple and easy to follow instructions.
I'm really glad that it's helped you. Thanks for commenting 🙂
It amazes me just how relatively easy it is to "pick" most modern padlocks, key safes etc! Thank You for showing people were they could be extremely vulnerable to crime if they don't take the time to choose their home and property security devices very carefully! 👍
Thanks for your comment. It amazes me, too, especially that key safes aren't made to any standard whatsoever, and padlocks can be opened in seconds. The number of cases I see in everyday life where something is 'secured' but just isn't secure, unbeknown to the owner.
Former fire department Lieutenant here. Having opened these in emergency situations, these key safes are surprisingly easy to open using simple hand tools such as a flat-head screwdriver or a knife. 🚒
You wouldn't put one on your house then?
Exactly, flat nose screwdriver and 10 seconds
@malcolmpaterson5881 would work👍, but I was going for a less destructive approach
Thanks for post your information for criminals to read.
@nevetsgnil1962 you're welcome
These key boxes should not be located by the door, rather out of sight, I work in community homecare and I know of boxes located on a front garden wall behind a plant, behind the bins, and inside the meter cupboard, sometimes the obscure locations make life awkward for us and we have the actual combination there is one property we visit where the box is located on the wall of a neighbouring property and that property has a very alert dog behind the door.
Although I can't recommend using these boxes, as they aren't a security device, but rather a convenience device. It would make sense swap with neighbours, and store each others' keys, as they are so easy to open. 👍
@@Pik_lokJust put it in a corner with a camera doorbel with pir senor if someone try it the alarm go of and the thief is on the cam😂
@@pirsensor1186 at least you'd be able to take some comfort from seeing who robbed your stuff 👍
It's also sometimes possible to open this type of low cost (cheap and nasty) lock using your ears. As you turn each dial there's a slightly different sound that the 'click' makes when it reaches the correct digit on each dial. When you hear the different click sound, move on to the next dial. Works on briefcases, padlocks etc too. You can also 'feel' the difference through a sensitive finger. I occasionally open (then reclose) a locked cabinet in our local DIY store to select and then purchase a high value item rather than waiting 10 minutes for a member of staff to open the cabinet. The store is too noisy to hear the tiny difference in the clicks but I can feel it, through a finger really subtly as each dial is turned.
Absolutely true. I do have a combination bike lock that's possible to audibly decode, the click sounds dull on the correct digit, and if you check out my Rhinolock padlock short, you can do them by feel... as well as quite a few other combination locks. Appreciate the comment, thank you. 👍
@@Pik_lok I remember the first time, as a kid, discovering the audible/tangible click on a combination lock briefcase my Mum had bought me for "big school!" A couple of years later I picked (at his request!) the Headteacher's briefcase lock as he'd forgotten the combination on his new case his wife had bought him for his birthday. I thought I'd done something wrong when I was called to his office but apparently my early lock-picking skills were hot gossip in the staff room. *"That quiet, innocent looking kid with the bright ginger hair...he doesn't look the type to pick a lock!"* 😉
That's a great story, thanks for sharing. The first lock I picked was a money box I had as a kid, I was so proud of myself when I finally opened it!
Now i have to change code again.. Thanks for telling the combination to the world

Don't believe it! Used the backing of an old postage stamp as it was waxed so a bit stiffer but slid in better and was in within less than 2 minutes. Been trying random codes for years and recently started going up from 0000 to 9999 sequentially every time I had a spare 5mins but this has saved me hours. Thanks so much, legend!

Lots of holiday homes use these key safes,I’d never rely on one for my home though.I never did think they were very secure and now I know they arn’t.😅
It’s surprising the trust people assign to them. You are advertising to anyone capable that your keys are in here. If they’re a little more hidden that’s a bonus. In all honesty, there are far more options and levels of secrecy that out match these key safes by simply hiding the key on your property.
@ethan4237 I completely agree with you, and most people have no idea how easy they are to open.
A lock is not to stop a thief, a lock is to stop an honest person from becoming a thief.
Don't forget they stop dumb thieves too!
An actual honest person don't need to be stopped from stealing, they will not steal even if the opportunity is given.
Stupid thing to say in a vain attempt to sound intellectual.
Yeah, a thief won't be bothered with this, they just kick the door open.
@kwas101 it's true 👍

So TH-cam goes and arbitrarily filters videos based upon a certain set of criteria that they TH-cam deem, morally and ethically, correct. Yet somehow showing someone how to pick a lock to get into a home or a storage facility even though they’re not saying that’s what it’s for you can only imagine that people will try and do that now that they know how to do it. And yet somehow this slipped through.
And now you've watched this, you can make more informed security decisions. 👍

Thanks for the video as I have a lock box that I don’t have the code for anymore. @grannysvids good luck with that, please do let me know how you get on.
Convenience is also important. If you have to use a key box, find a shoe cupboard install it deep inside, numbers difficult to see. Your kids should squint and kneel to see the number. They will struggle initially but will get used to . A thief will be stumped 😂
Couldn't get the paper to stay straight, didnt the difference as I changed numbers. How did you know where to put a line on the paper?
I just put the line on for the video. You can do it without and feel it drop, but it's easier to see on camera with a line. Mine was about 7mm away from the end of the paper. I put the paper in and marked where the dials came to.
If you're struggling to get the paper in the gap, you could try something thinner than paper, like a label of a drinks bottle.
@Pik_lokit worked with a thicker paper, thank you. It helped me recover my key but now not feeling safe leaving it in there. Good thing there is a motion detecting camera on the entry way. Will keep an eye on alerts😅
@sharonatuk I'm glad this helped 🙂 You could always put the wrong key in the box, and hide the correct key somewhere else lol

I'm glad this video helped, lol!
Bonus, now you can get into something any criminal will already know how to get into too. Buy something better.
Had an identical key box which I messed up the combination about two years ago. Used this technique but it didn't produce a result. In the end I rotated the first 3 numbers by 180 degrees and it then opened with the 4th number not being rotated at all. In this case I'm sure that if the box is mounted high up in a non-obvious location it will stop all but the most determined thief.
Well, I'm glad you got in eventually, and thanks for letting me know. Mounting in a really awkward place would definitely increase security. The push button ones also seem much more difficult to decode too.
I am Paramedic and we often come across key safes with no numbers that will help me a lot.
I'm glad this helped. If you open them regularly, you might consider buying a decoder tool. It might be easier than a slip of paper, especially in the dark or rain. 👍
Not as much as the twats robbing the people that need them for a reason. You’re just as stupid as the bloke that posted this.
I have a Sentinel brand I inherited from a house and looks exactly the same. I cannot get a thin piece of paper or blade between the metal plate and the rotating combination. Did they make improvements?
I've just had a look at it, it does look the same. There's a chance that they've improved it, or that the tolerances are better on that one by chance. Either way, it looks like you have a better one. Unless you're worried there's a key in there, and want to get it of course.
@@Pik_lok yeah, I wanted to reuse it as I have no idea what the code is but looks like I’ll have to bin it. Pity.
@opentrail That's a shame. I don't know how much patience you have, but these boxes often don't take too long to brute force. I'm guessing somewhere between 1 and 2 hours.
wow! who knew? Now, to impress my grandson.
Brilliant! I was always fascinated by this kind of stuff as a child 👍

Worked perfectly, thank you. Just bought a house and it had one of these. Tried with a strip of plastic as slightly better than paper. But it was surprising how easy you could tell the difference. Cheers RookKnight, wanted one that didn't use a specialised tool. Thanks for watching 👍
So how do you do this when it is fixed to the wall, if you've forgotten the combination you would have to wrench off the wall first!

In the 60s 70s combination locks could be opened by pulling on the shackle or chain whatever type, from left to right turn first pulling on lock till you feel it's tightening, then follow on with second etc etc. will only work if none in right place to start with
@andrewlengert2558 Thats right 👍 You do get some combination locks with false gates, which can make things a little more difficult. Generally, most combination locks are susceptible to decoding and shouldn't be used for any medium/high security applications. Especially considering they can be brute forced in a relatively short time period.
These useless security products have been on sale for years. The manufacturers are aware of it and choose not to improve them. (The insurance industry too presumably.) The more of us who know about it the better.

These are best installed in an awkward location , for example high up or very low or deep in a cupboard forcing someone to use their arm length and squint to see. You could try something a little more rigid that could be pushed with more force in to the gap, I've used a metal tie wrap before. This can be done in a slightly different way, check out my video 017 on the Abus combination padlock. It's often worth trying all combinations beginning with 19 too, as it's very common to use dates of birth. You could also try something more destructive.

@d17mop No problem, have a good weekend 👍
To be totally honest and clear with ourselves, no - there is no box that can't be opened. A pry bar or a saw or just a big hammer will open any key box - with no skill required.
You may find one that can't be opened in under two minutes by an average school kid who doesn't have any tools, though.
What if the box was made of four inch thick, steel-reinforced concrete? The other day I watched some folks cutting through the sidewalk with a power saw. ”Like a hot knife through butter". My local home center rents that saw for $40. So a $40 saw rental will open a $3,000 box.
Fair enough but It's still not good to show the wrong people how simple it is to compromise them.

@Travis_22 Yes, you could 👍 I've also decoded these using a metal tie wrap before, which would also work!
@@Pik_lok Indeed!
We have the keypad version of that for carers entry, are they any better?
I've not tested any other key safes yet, but I definitely will do over the coming weeks. 👍
I learned how to open bike combination chain locks for fun over 55 years ago. These boxes are often not well fixed to the wall, and so can be ripped off by a criminal and smashed with a hammer. They won’t worry about picking them. If you fit them, make sure they are not readily visible.
Very good points. Are you not tempted to learn how to open more locks?
@@Pik_lok Maybe for interest, I’m normally dismantling to repair.
Now all the vulnerable people are at risk now.
They already were. These boxes are rubbish.
@@Pik_lok You think that is ok?
@@199Paramedic Do I think what is okay?
I'm sure he's not showing anything burglars don't know.
The bad news for the vulnerable people is this isn't the quickest or simplest way to open them.
Most of these are located in a random place or a wall not flat on the ground. I imagine for most thieves this would be a difficult task especially when trying to be discreet.
It's a good point, but if anything it would be easier if it was mounted, as you don't have to steady the item. For example, on a padlock this technique can bit very difficult as you need one hand to steady the lock, one to spin the wheel, and somehow another had to hold the paper. If it's fixed to a surface, whether that be horizontal or vertical, it's much easier as it only needs two hands. I have decoded one on a wall before, and it posed no problem. 👍
Let's face it, you're only kidding yourself at this point. BUY A BETTER LOCK.
What's the point of security when TH-cam shows criminals what to do to get in to your house etc. So my point is how secure is your property now, to you feel safe leaving your key in a safe box???
This is a tutorial for people who have forgotten their code, but it also highlights just how bad this product is. People who use these certainly deserve to understand how vulnerable they are, I wouldn't ever use one. The manufacturers need to do better, and can do, but prioritise profits over protection.
@@Pik_lok what would you recommend instead?
I can't recommend any other similar products, as I haven't tested any yet. I'll look at getting some to test, but I'd always be a bit concerned about leaving keys to a property in a box outside the property. However for anyone with a box, I'd recommend ensuring it's not visible to any passers-by, and on camera if possible.
That is a misguided conclusion. If a lock is poorly designed and easy to open then the fix is to engineer a better lock. Trying to cover up its deficiencies will never succeed.
I'd rather know about these useless products so NOT to use them. Why would anyone want to use a keysafe? It totally invalidates your house insurance anyway
I always felt that these locks weren't secure. Now I know for sure that they're useless.
No they aren't. I feel they're more a convenience solution than a security solution.
You have just made all families with vulnerable, elderly or disabled relatives extremely worried.
They should be happy that I've pointed out the security flaws in this product. The manufacturers know this issue, but prioritise their profits over people's security
It's not a problem. Simply, once the key safe is positioned outside the front door, place a large oil painting over it.
@davefandango1303 or camouflage netting 👍🤣
Yes, true
Amazing demonstration found it in my recommended, watched with no audio whilst skipping through, got to the cam bit before skipping to the decoding part and i’m amazed, possibly the quickest brush over a video and learned a foundation how to open a key safe. Does this also work on combination locks? Most obvious design flaw that i never thought of.
It will work on some combination locks, but not all. There are a few other exploits in my videos, using a bra and bare hand. These methods make use of shocking a spring loaded locking mechanism. Thank you for commenting 👍
Thanks for showing people how to break into my house! Might as well just leave key under door mat now !
It's probably better like that anyway these boxes would never stop a criminal. Out of interest, have you notified your insurance company that you use one of these boxes?
This is going to make life much easier getting into my key safe when I’ve lost me keys and I’m absolutely bolloxed fumbling around with a bit of paper in the dark 👍
You could always write the code on the piece of paper, and stick it to the box. That way if you're really struggling, you could read the code and get in that way 👍
Is this video for people who have a keysafe to allow carers or emergency services to gain access without breaking the door down?
Or, is it for the general public or people who burgle homes and prey on the vulnerable and or sick and disabled people. If it is the later, you have just put thousands of people in serious danger. If I could prosecute you I would, you think you are helping people or think this video is educational, think again. This video will be removed.
Thanks for your comment Steve. This video is for people who don't know what the combination is, as these boxes are useless, and no criminal would need the video to access the contents of one of these boxes. These boxes are cheap rubbish, the manufacturers know that they have design flaws, but prioritise profits over people's security. I therefore hope this video helps people make more informed security decisions.
it looks like just me is not managing to open the box after watching the video multiple times. Tried different types of papers, it just stuck inside . what do i do wrong...? tenant left this box in the middle of the flat...
If you're struggling with that, you could try using a different material such as a label from a drinks bottle, an off cut from a drinks bottle, or some feeler gauge. Alternatively, you can buy specific lock picking tools for feeling for these gates, I will temporarily leave a link in this video description for you that shows a video using this tool. This does come with a cost of buying the tool when, realistically, a hammer and chisel might give a better albeit more destructive solution.
I love these videos. Makes it so easy for burglars to rob places. You are a true here to them. They salute you. You are there leader
Do you honestly think one of these rubbish boxes would keep a burglar out, even without this?
For all the doomsayers out their the thieves already know these ways.
@chrisardern4594 exactly
You unlocked it with it being, loose, flat and right in front of you. Would it still be as easy, or possible if sited 3ft high on a wall and behind a bush? That's where my nieghbours is. I know the combination and have opened it but it isn't easy because of it's location.
@@edwardbarnard5830 yes, I would be able to. Maybe if it was raining it might make the paper soggy. However there are other things that can be used. I've also used a metal tie wrap to open one of these before.
This is insanity - what’s wrong with you !?!
It is pretty unbelievable, you'd think they'd make them better than this!
The wheels on the one I have are tight so the paper wouldn't fit into it??
That's good for you as it means you have a box made with great tolerances, bad for you if you've not got the combination though
As someone who works for an older people's charity and whose wife is a care worker thanks for making hundreds of older and vulnerable people a little less safe. I presume you work for one of the companies that makes a different type of key safe, you'll now be getting a bonus as I will be advising clients not to use this kind of key safe.
@@ibx1 Thank you for your comment. While I understand your concern, it’s important to recognize that exposing vulnerabilities is a crucial part of improving security. By demonstrating how a combination keysafe can be opened, we highlight potential weaknesses that manufacturers can address. This awareness encourages the development of more secure products, ultimately protecting consumers from potential threats.Any issues raised within this video should be directed to the manufacturers of these devices. They have known about these vulnerabilities for years but have yet to address them. The security industry relies on transparency and continuous improvement, and disclosure of vulnerabilities is a key part of that process.
If Piklock knew about this, rest assured that plenty of crooks knew too. Raising awareness of weak security is a good thing.
Does this work if the box isn’t laying flat?
Yes, it doesn't rely on gravity to push the paper down. You apply the pressure with your fingers. It would work upside down if one was mounted that way 👍
Why on earth would anyone want to publish how to steal keys?
It's not really the theft of keys that should be a concern, but the theft of the things that the keys secure.
Publishing this video achieves the following.
Helps people who have forgotten their combination to get access to the contents of their key box.
Highlights how insecure these products are and helps people make more informed security choices.
Creates pressure for manufacturers to stop selling such low quality 'security' products, and prioritising their profits over customers' security.
To get the lock companies to make better locks. For decades they’ve been selling us locks they knew had flaws. I’m always keeping an eye on these videos, because it gives me a good idea of which locks not to buy
Absolutely! These companies know how poor their products are, but they simply don't care. Thanks for commenting 👍
@user-io2et5bv2s I've not tested any more, but I'm looking to do so over the coming weeks
@@Pik_lok, I've a key safe with a manifold mk 4 combination lock on it, I don't use it and it's not waterproof, but I suspect it is sufficiently secure!
Excellent, but I did try this a few times but it did not work….i will give it another whirl though!
Good luck, if not, there's a slightly different technique you can use on those locks. It also feels for the gate, but you can use a thin piece of metal. I've used a metal tie wrap before, and the technique is the one in my video: 017 How to decode and open an Abus 158/50.
@@Pik_lok Thank you! This padlock has been driving me absolutely nuts!! I’m going to use a thin feeler gauge strip next time.
Cheers - Craig
@craigwilliams6734 No worries, Craig. If you're in the UK, I've also got a competition running at the moment too, details are in my latest video. Thanks for commenting 👍
And putting old, vulnerable people at risk
It's the manufacturers that make these products with known vulnerabilities, but prioritise their profits over people's safety.
I used to do this with school briefcases but visually by looking down the side of the rotator to see which number it was
🤣🤣🤣 that's some pretty bad tolerances, and some sharp eyes! Nice one, and thanks for interacting!👍
Now thief's know how to break into vulnerable old people's houses where they will steal and possibly attack them. WELL DONE
They already could. They don't need this tutorial. These boxes are rubbish and can be opened with a hammer. The manufacturers know how rubbish these boxes are, and don't care. Take it up with them.
Thanks, will try this on 2 keysafe boxes that are on my newly purchased house!!?
Good luck, let me know the results 👍
So what do you recommend as a secure alternative?
I'll be testing a few more key safes over the coming weeks, but ultimately, I don't think putting a key in a box is going to stop a criminal. A key safe probably shouldn't be visible to passersby, however I'd probably look to making alternative arrangements and ensuring people who need a key have a key.
Thank you I am always forgetting my suitcase codes! ..which is really annoying. Now I don’t need to worry. 😁
You're welcome. Maybe set them to 000 when you get back from your travels
Fantastic video thank you. Now I can go and break into all the old pensioners' homes nearby. This kind of information should be restricted to bona fide locksmiths and not plastered over social media!
Glad it was helpful!
