I think it's likely to happen just like Viagra did, but it could also be something that is done using gene therapy and stem cells. Transplanting cloned hair may also become an option. Like @Guus115 said, science may soon get a "magic boost" from AI research. There's certainly a lot of money to be made from the cure and there are also researchers who want the cure for themselves, so it's not like no one is trying...

@@iDTecKtBut the follicles are alive. I don't think any cure will be a normal pill you could take, though. More likely it would require some kind of genetic alterations that can make your existing follicles resistant to DHT. Not sure if it would work on someone who already has a significant degree of hair loss.
Maybe the solution for people with lots of hair loss will be mass cloning of the existing DHT-resistant hairs around the sides with a big transplant, as you mentioned.

Aged 53yrs old I have to admit that I would still love to get my hair back! As a youngster I had a very thick mop of brown curls but in my final (very stressfull) year at university aged 21 the thinning began apace. And within another couple of years I was properly bald.
The way it rocked my confidence as a young man is something that has stuck with me to a degree, even as I have realised that one has to accept things and move on. So yes, I never underestimate the impact this can have.

I had a hair transplant at 66, and I live in Bangkok. At first when i went to the hair clinic the doctor said there was not enough hair to do a transplant . He gave me minoxidol spray & tablets plus Finasteride. After 8 months of doing this he asked me to come back. He said i now had thicker hair and he could do a transplant on my crown area and some of my front. My hair was thinning but not complete hair loss. My hair surgeon gave me realistic expectations.I'm very pleased with the result. I had 3500 grafts altogether. I'm also half way through a session of 6 PRP treatments .

I worry about the side effects - both the ones we already know, and the ones we might realize later. It doesn't feel right to do medical therapy for the rest of my life strictly for cosmetic reasons.

I think we also need to discuss the side effects of oral Finasteride. I was on this drug in my middle to late 20’s for hair loss and the side effects were significant (mostly sexual side effects). It took almost an entire year for the most major side effect to return to normal after ceasing this medication. Minoxidil, how ever, had very little side effects.
As much as Finasteride is meant to work and help, I would never take it again and I think it’s important to let people know that it affects your hormone levels and can come with significantly undesirable side effects.

Dr Linkov, what do you think about harvesting beard grafts not just from the neck but also from the face? Literally extracting someone's beard follicles on the chin and the cheeks. I heard some doctors consider it to be a good additional source of grafts as the healing process on the face is very robust and leaves almost no FUE scars after extraction.

Nowadays, you can get really impressive coverage when you combine scalp + BEARD (or even chest) grafts. Of course, your beard hair needs to be a good MATCH.
Also, it really depends on the donor - some patients have a great donor (and can also use the extended donor area). There are videos of doctors doing over 10 000 gratfs…
Some patients have a very weak donor… then even 6-7000 grafts is a stretch 😅 HT is a case-specific procedure…

I was a fully bald in August of 2023. I had a full head of hair in 2020, by the end of 2020, I was fully bald. No idea how it happend so quickly (I was slowly thinning, but nothing to crazy). I stayed bald until August 2023 when my head shaver broke (I should mention im a medical student and started med school in 2021, took about 6 months off when my son was born and returned in 2022). It is now end of march 2024 (7 months since being fully bald), I can can firlmy say that derma rolling and medical managment (minoxidil, finasteride, biotin) helped me in getting my hair back. But what helped even more, and when I started to see way more results was once I started sleeping more, eating cleaner, not skipping meals, putting on sun screen, covering my head from heavy sun when reasonably possible. I have a really loving family and I will say this helps. And my wife is an angel, who has supported me in every way (bald, broke, with hair, busy, sleepless and all the other things associated with being a med student dad). So really guys, Dr. Gary knows what he is saying, follow his advice.

I just have had my hair and beard transplant one week ago.
After the transplant i issued a correction of assymetry and it will be done in half of month from now.
I am concerned about a movie I recently watched "Beard Transplant Failures! 3 Tips to Avoid it!"
All grafys were taken from the back and the side of the scalp. None were taken from neck or chest.
After watching that youtube video I am concerned that the beard with double and triple hair follicles might cause bumpyness of skin and unnatural look.
I do not know yet how it will look and whether it is true what was mentioned in that video.
But if it would be true, then during the scheduled correction I would request to take the hair transplanted to the beard as grafts (at least the double and triple hair follicles) to be re-used in correction of the symmetry on the head part of the transplant.
I have a question for you:
How much truth is in that video?
Can hair transplanted to the beard be reused again as a source? If yes, then should I hurry, or opposite: should I wait till hair falls out and regrows before it can be re-harvested?
(that way I would avoid overdepletion of the donor area and avoid the problems mentioned in the quoted video, plus that would leave space to put in the beard the chest and neck-beard hair instead).
A reaction video or a response to my comment would be greatly appreciated, as only 2 weeks remain now till the symmetry correction.
Thank you for your videos. You are doing a great job and increasing awareness.

Hi Dr Gary, I have an interesting question, that I have not seen a lot of info about.
    So a few questions;
1.) hair harvested from the donor areas seem to be predominantly in the middle of the back. What about the Hairs at the bottom adjoining the neck, can they be used?
2.) you mentioned that on average, patients generally can use 6000-7000 grafts from the donor areas, does that apply for all races? I noticed for Asians the lower hairline at the back that I mentioned above, is far lower below the ear lobe than that of a Caucasians (eg, the hairline stops 1.5 inches below the ear where on a Caucasian, the hairline stops around/at the earlobe) I’m not sure whether that is the feature of having a less prominent/protruding occipital bone that makes the back of their head appear more flat, hence lowering that back hairline as a result… or simply they have more hairs at the back.. if this the case, they would technically have more hairs available to harvest than that of a Caucasian?
    Thanks

I still have a perfect hairline It is still really thin but getting thicker. I'm not entirely sure it was androgenic. Minoxidil and diet might be the only thing doing anything. I was completely balded in less than a year after first noticing thin hair from 17-18.

But also, you're young. All of your loss is recent. Every case of complete returns and the best recoveries is always from 20-25 year olds. You were very aggressive, but you still can halt and slow and reverse it. Be careful of minoxidil long term and stick with finasteride or dutasteride at least 24 months to get a full view of what it will do for you. Also, the hairs you're mentioning are called vellus hairs.

I was fortunate to get onto finasteride / oral minoxidil, PRP, hair vitamins, derma rolling, hair loss focussed shampoo from my late 30’s. It stopped my shedding and slowed my regressing hair line. This regime produced thick healthy donor hair. And the years of PRP and rolling produced fertile recipient area. I finally had the money and time at 53 to get an FUE done. Only 2000 grafts, but the surgeon suggested well over 5000+ hairs. So mostly the front and lobes with a little going back into the top and crown. It’s been 6 months and it is starting to look mint. Still some uneven growth so cropped on the shorter side. Not sure I’ll fill in the bald patch… I am in my 50’s after all.

if your only implanting 25% of the total hair that has been lost in a given zone, then why does planting an excess of hair in a given area result in death of the implanted hair? Isn't there sufficient blood/nutrient supply ? is that supply lost overtime along with the hair ?

Would like to hear what you think of Rogaine for Women and would it be likely to work or fail because the hair loss is chemo induced. Love your videos. BTW I'll be 70 in May.

So... if a person just filled in the entire head with a few thousand grafts, could you just then fill it in with fibers? I'm guessing that would probably really make a huge difference.
I'm happy that I have what I have. I'm about a norwood 3. I really want a transplant to give me my hair line back. I have a good 2 fingers from that top wrinkle on my forehead. I'd rather it be 1 finger (well.. really I'd love 0 fingers but still)
For now Fin/Min are helping me keep what I have. I do hope to be able to get FUE though.

Slightly off-topic (but not really) - could you please make an analysis on the *French President Emmanuel Macron's potential hair transplant/ hair transformation* ? I've recently seen a picture of his wearing a mop of hair on the top of his head like a toupee (not toupee-shaming!) and was wondering if he did something or he just changed his hairdresser. His hair "profile" definitely changed from what I've seen before.

What about shaping the hairline from the neck by taking all of the hair for grafts from back of the upper neck instead of just taking hair evenly from the donor area? Often that area gets trimmed at the barber anyway. And can hair taken from somewhere else from the body transform to the kind of hair that grows in the head or does it stay coarse and short? Also is it ppssible to get hair grafts from some one else or does body reject them like organ transplants?

If I was a Norwood 6-7 I’d definitely continue medical therapy. I’d want my existing hair to be as strong and as stable as possible. A lot people might not be a great candidate initially but after a year of medical therapy, the calibre of donor hair may increase thus improving their overall candidacy for hair restoration surgery. There’s a good few NW6-7s TH-camrs that are reliant on meds to maintain their transplant results
