I live north of New Orleans in St. Tammany Parish. There are 2 F-15 pilots that live in my area and they will occasionally do fly overs. I know one of the mechanic team leads and do patches for them occasionally. That is why I say if you come out to New Orleans I'll take you around.

Mach Loop is one of the few high speed low level terrain maneuvering flight training areas in NATO. There is also a place in the US out west as well. Both are well known to aviation enthusiasts, and military units know there are spectators.
The plane with the Hi Mom sign was a US Navy F-18 (possibly a D model, or it could be an F or G model. Would have needed to see more of the aircraft to know.) I have also scene a sign held up by a back seater saying, “I am flying with stupid”.
The Mach Loop itself is used by other countries besides the US and the UK.
The propeller aircraft was either a trainer aircraft or a new light ground attack aircraft for low intensity operations. The US has some, however the markings on that plane looked more like either France or UK.
The one small odd jet that we didn’t get a good look at was probably a jet trainer aircraft.
Finally yes, they (the photographers) are able to tune into the range frequencies to monitor when the aircraft are coming. C-130’s will run it sometimes, and usually there is a guy sitting on the back ramp. Before going, I would try to get in contact with that unique community to see if they have a schedule for when planes will be up. Sometimes it will most likely be short notice.

Had to double check before writing this, however C-17’s (heavy lift cargo jets) have also run the Mach Loop. Flying a C-17 through there would be like flying a 747 jetliner.

The Mach Loop is a low level structure in Wales, used by the RAF and USAF which are based here in the UK.
Seeing the aircraft is an awesome experience, once you’ve done it once and you’re lucky enough to see anything going through you’d want to experience it again and again.
Your son would love it, I’ve just put a video up on my TH-cam channel from my last trip there with my 6, 9 and 10 year old children, who video and take photos themselves of the aircraft. That trip was awesome we had 20 passes from F15s.
It’s well worth a watch even just to watch the images the 2 oldest took of them, one word Awesome.

They usually fly through Mach Loop as part of standard training. They do it all the time. You need to get there early if you go because you can never park. The smaller, black jet aircraft is a Hawk and is used for training and by the Red Arrows. The prop plane is a Texan T1 and is used for flight training. The F-15s and F-35s are from RAF Lakenheath which is a US base in the UK. There's normally a lot of Typhoons, which are always impressive to watch. They're often in the Lake District too.

In 1984 I was an MP in Germany. We had a unit outing taking a cruise on the Rhein River. A bunch of us got off the boat and hiked up to a castle that overlooked the river. All of a sudden 2 German Air Force Tornadoes, that were flying "NOE" (nap of the earth) down the Rhein River valley went screaming past us. We were looking DOWN on them. Ya dont get to look DOWN on a fighter jet very often. Unfortunately it was 1984 and was WAY before cell phones. We had cameras but it happened so fast no one got a picture.

@@eTraxxI remember watching the fighter pilot podcast (Highly recommend, it's not just "Fighter" pilots; they interview attack pilots (A-4, A-6 "Intruders", A-7's, A-10's), Bomber crewmen (B-52's, B-1's), foreign pilots, etc.); and they were interviewing either an F-111 crew (I think they were armed with bombs, so probably an F-111) or "Maybe" an EF-111 EWS meant to jam snd spoof Iraqi SAMs and Radars; regardless, they were flying a standard interdiction envelope i.e. "Terrain Following Radar, low as shit and fast as possible" in Iraq just like Tornados as the 111 is kinda like the Tornados granddaddy but can carry a shit ton more bombs, it's got 2 afterburning engines, variable-geometry wings (i.e. "Swing Wings") but it's so damn old the wing sweep is "manually controlled only"😂.
Anyways they're boomin' and zoomin', as close as possible to the ground to avoid Iraqi air defense when all of a sudden there's a BRIGHT ass light above them lighting up the cockpit and they freak out like "WTF IS THAT?". Well they zoomed past, and realized it was a trucks headlights that was driving on the road/highway/whatever... ABOVE THEM😂. THATS HOW "Low and Terrain Following" they were to the ground. Then joked about how badly the driver must've shit himself when it's the middle of the night and within a few dozen feet a sonic boom and afterburner roar must've came out of nowhere to him. IIRC they were so close that not only was the truck ABOVE them, but they could make out the drivers face.
They also talked about the F-111 being so analog there was a switch and circuit breaker for damn near every function of the plane and crews would sometimes put straws and shit on the harder to reach switches to make them easier to reach which eventually was a little "Overused"; so they're fast n' low over Iraq on a different sortie/mission and out of nowhere there's a MASSIVE bright ass explosion right next to them, and they're freaking out "Is there a fighter on our ass? Was that a SAM? Etc, etc..." And the pilot just happened to look at the side of the HUD ands like "Huh, our countermeasure stores are down...(i.e. the counter for the amount remaining is less than earlier)". Turns out while configuring the computers and aircraft for their attack run and flying low enough to be "surfing the trees" if there were any in the desert, the WSO/RIO/Back-Seater accidently bumped one of those "Extensions" with his leg or something and popped off a salvo of flares directly into the desert around & beneath them effectively flashbanging and scaring the shit out of themselves 😂. Especially with how sand effectively "Reflects" light at night making those flares seem even brighter than they already are.

Ok, lemme clear a few things up from the video, it may have already been said but the comment section was TL:DR. The Mach Loop is a training area used by NATO to conduct low level ingress/egress training for pilots. They fly that route a lot for routine training sorties, and pretty much everything (including C130s and C17s) use it. In terms of those Strike Eagles, they're stationed at RAF Lakenheath permanently, as are the F-35s. The US has had jets stationed there since the cold war and it;s a very active base, along with it's partner base RAF Mildenhall. We also have a similar training area here in California, Sidewinder Canyon (That's where the "Hi Mom" F-18 footage came from). They do some pretty spectacular stuff there too, and there's the link to some video footage that's well worth the watch. Hope that clears up the questions if it hasn't already been done. 👍

How do you not know that the US has bases in the UK? I was stationed in Wales over 30yrs ago. RAF Lakenheath has been a US base for over half a century, on the East side of your island nation. That LN marker on the tail signifies Lakenheath as their home base.

The Mach Loop is used by the US and Royal Air Forces. They fly the loop quite often. The prop driven aircraft look like a Tucano which is a turbo prop, used as a trainer. The other small aircraft look like a T38 or F5

I was on Flag duty so I was in charge of raising and lowering the US Flag every day. My school had two Marines come and show us properly how to raise and lower the Flag and fold it correctly.

They are able to get such sharp and clear still images because they are digital cameras shooting at like 1/1000th sec exposure time or shorter, and taking many many pictures as fast as it can. For every clear sharp photo they get probably 100 or more not-so-good photos.

Mach Loop is used for low level mountain flight training. Sneaking in under radar and behind the mountains so not to be detected. They also do this in the US at Crowley Point (Star Wars Canyon).

Im so surprized that you... a Royal Marine.. havent heard of the "Mach Loop" where Military Aircraft from Several Nations go to Train.. { Information taken from and Credited to Wikipedia...} The Mach Loop (also known as the Machynlleth Loop, Welsh: Dolen Mach) is a series of valleys in the United Kingdom in west-central Wales, notable for their use as low-level training areas for fast aircraft. The system of valleys lies 13 km (8 mi) east of Barmouth between the towns of Dolgellau to the north and Machynlleth to the south, from the latter of which it takes its name. The training area is part of the United Kingdom Low Flying System and lies within Low Flying Area 7 (LFA7), which covers all of Wales.

In the eighties the navy fighters would flight through the valleys below where we would camp around the our Scout camp in Washington State. We were told the game was to sneak up as close to the Navel air station without being picked up on radar. I something similar when I was in Utah in March.

Low level training area. US based f15s and 35s use it too. RAF mildenhall is a US operated base.
The small black jet is an RAF hawk and prop plane is a tucano. If they're black then they're training aircraft. Start on the prop, move up to the hawk jet to then go into fast jets like the typhoon and f35. Hope that helps

The American equivalent is Rainbow Canyon out near Death Valley. Then, it was always fun to drive through Nellis Training Area and watch the F-15's float around each other. Yes, FLOAT. Using their raw engine power to keep themselves aloft as they "danced" around each other at what one would think was impossibly low speeds for a fighter jet. Even better when they popped off flares when doing this.

The prop plane is a Beechcraft Texan T1. It’s used by the RAF as a beginner jet trainer. It uses a turbine engine, so it gets them use to the performance characteristics of that type of power plant, all while keeping them sub-sonic and relatively safe. They started using it in 2019 based on what I could find real quick.
What you saw was not an air show. The way I understand it, it’s used to mimic low level bomb runs. We, the USA, run that with the RAF a lot to help the men learn to work together. What surprised me is the still images I saw on the video show the F-15’s were armed! Not heavy, but at least a single missile on each. I couldn’t tell for sure if it was an AIM 9 or an AIM 120. Which are heat seeking and radar guided respectively. They had two external fuel tanks, so they were going to be up for a while. I wonder if the weapons came after what all went down on 9-11. During that day some fighter jets got redirected to targets that didn’t respond fast enough to the calls to land now. They went knowing they were not armed at all. They went knowing they have to ram the commercial aircraft with their own and potentially die doing so. They were prepared to do whatever they had to do to protect people on the ground. We are lucky to have men and women like that.
I did some audio/video/CCTV/security installs on a guys house that lived just outside of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which I live right by. His cabin was up on a huge hill borderline mountain and had a great view. We got the surprise of our lives one day while running wire. We kept hearing jets off in the distance and it got louder and louder. Then the windows started to shake and we run outside. A flight of four F-16’s flew BELOW us! They were down in the valley and running the length of it and only pulled out at the end of it. They went straight vertical, flipped over, rolled back around, dove back into the valley and ran it back out the way they came. Talking to the homeowner, he’s seen F-16’s, F-15’s, A-10’s, F/A-18’s and F-22’s. He said they do it pretty often around once every 3 months but not like clockwork.

The black one is the M-346 trainer made by the Italian company Aermacchi. Any other name is what countries that bought them added on. If it's Polish then it's Bielyk (white tailed eagle), Greece calls theirs 'Silver Hawks'. Pilots have to give their aircraft a cool name. There are many variants, with some of them meant for combat and not training.
Boeing's F-15 Demo Team is currently in the UK for a few air shows so the F-15s may have been them.
