I mean, the assets bearing names out of honor are used a lot more than the ones bearing names based on American Colonist History. Chinook's, Apache's, and all the other helos are used a lot more on average than the Minutemen (thank goodness.)
That all aside, I'm still waiting for the Navy to name a carrier the "USS Joe Medicine Crow", because we all know why a ship bearing his name would be terrifying. Plus, we all know it's nickname will be "War Chief" and every boot on the ground will never not be able to grin at the words, "War Chief has Eagles in the sky!" over the coms.

@@steeljawX Those 'Colonist' names are seemingly reserved for missiles; Patriot, Minutemen, etc. There's ALOT of tribes you can pull from, not that many names comparatively for Colonialist/Revolutionary War terms. Rangers are already in use. Wait, why the 'thank goodness'?

NOTE: This is just a broad generalization of why some US weapons are named after Native American tribes and leaders is often due to the two being once enemies and the amount of respect the two share which other. While I'm sure some will disagree with this, it must be kept in mind that Native Americans have a strong affiliation due to a longstanding tradition of American Natives serving proudly and with great distinction in the US Military. Think of the Wind Talkers of the Navajo who served in the Marines during WW2. While there are exceptions and examples of horrible treatment by some, love of country is the most compelling.
*"The U.S. military has a long history with Native Americans. Armed conflicts between the two were commonly known as the American Indian Wars and were fought intermittently from the time the U.S. was first settled by Europeans to early in the 20th century. But Native Americans also served as some of the fiercest fighters for the United States for more than 200 years. In fact, 32 Native Americans have earned the nation’s highest military award, the Medal of Honor."

We have forces in Government that want a weak America. This is why they canceled the F-22, many other. If they could they would get rid of the A-10. It's at the top of the list, because it's one of the best ground supporting planes in history. And is wanted by ground troops. This is the reason why they keep canceling our top technology.

The thing about the Comanche is that it directly led to the stealth hawk like the ones used on the bin laden raid. It makes me wonder what they've been doing since then - the Comanche was back in the 90s.

    Kind of.
It flew like crap, but the level of stealth provided by that plane was very much real, and to this day of high quality. It was phased out because we made better stealth aircraft that can fky better and hold more payload.
Even then no other country in the world has succeded at producing a true stealth aircraft.
Their closest attempts are still more radar visible than the f117 by a considerable margin

A big issue of getting replacements and such is building an air frame that can handle over all weight, have the survivability, along with having the much needed hardware. After all of that, people need to have a firm idea of what they need so something can be built.

The only people that seem to get upset about using tribal names for warrior combative equipment or a NFL team. They get upset about the Name of the Washington Redskins. It didn’t seem to upset the coach William Dietz who may or may not have been the Sioux nation. But I have heard interviews with American Indians from different tribes who aren’t upset about the old mascot because they are at least recognized by the American people

There was another attack helicopter being developed at the same time as the Cobra attack helicopter AH-1 types it was the AH-56 Cheyenne, it was being developed by Sikorsky during the Vietnam war due to the fact the AH-1's had some kind of software issue apparently. The is a video out there about as well.

Helicopter blade technology is maxed out, the blade going forward is move faster then the helicopter and the blade going back is slower then the helicopter, there is a point the blade going forwards is moving through the air quicker makes a pressure wave that disrupts the airflow at the tip. This is a quick and easy explanation. 250 miles per hour is the minimum speed. The v-22 Osprey was going to the next great thing but it has its own problems.

Just remember, when a program is dropped, its never scrapped. Ultimately, some of that program is used in full or in part in future developements. So, its not a complete waste of time and money.

The only known Comanche attack helicopter left in existence is here in our military museum in Alabama. They need to bring it back out and give it only a few minor upgrades. The other one is obviously under lock and key back with the company

While i do not speak for all natives of course, my moms half of the family is a mix of Navajo and Cherokee native tribes and i would say i am honored to have such powerful machines named after our people.

Was it canceled OR did the government Claim to have canceled the program, but keep the program alive for a Special Operations Attack Helicopter. I have witnessed a Comanche Flying at night in 2004 during its testing, there is no mistaking the sound of that 5 bladed rotor.

Funny it was not needed when it was cancelled , yet i might be needed soon if a war breaks out with Russia, where stealth will be more important than anything for helis . Also some of this tec was used in the chopper that was used in the binladen raid, the tail rotor of that one is identical to this one . If one didnt crash on that raid we probably wouldn't know about about some being operational.

Pretty sure that stealthy helicopters will be needed in the coming 15 years; drones are making it really cheap to get a warhead to the target, while still being very effective, and drone swarms would be a helicopter's nightmare
